Back in the 1800s The Shubenacadie Canal was built here to allow boats to move from the ocean into inland waterways that would let them travel more or less directly across the province to the ocean on the western shore. Unfortunately it had a series of problems and was a financial failure. Needless to say the locks fell into disrepair but over the last few years the local govt has spent a ton of cash refurbing the structure of some of the locks here in the city as a historical artifact. Seems a waste to me but they are apparently made of money. The locks themselves are fairly narrow and only small pleasure boats can fit.

The video only names 7 and has notorious hooligan cars like the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa and Yugo. Plus the usual-suspect Corvair and Pinto. The author seemed to run out of stats for some and just threw the older models into the mix because they needed some filler.

If you guys are into power plants and canals you could tour that little city near me where I posted a picture of the waterfall. They use it to generate hydropower from a plant almost as old as the original at Niagara. The old Erie Canal runs nearby.

These locks are about a mile from my house.

There are a few old canals in the Northern Illinois area, one a few miles from my house. Mostly they still have water running through them but a few locks are dry. There is one canal about an hour away from me called the Hennipine Canal that developed innovative building technology that is still being used today. Many of the people who designed and built it went on to build the Panama Canal. It is the only canal that uses Marshall Gates in some of the locks, these gates drop down sort of like the door on a mail box.

That sounds like the design they use when the Erie Canal was moved into the Mohawk River in 1917.

One of the nice thing about touring the countryside is all the interesting cars I see on the road. I'm seeing a lot of BMW M cars both 3s and 4s. They have a really nice looking stance.

When I was pulling out of Chic-Fil-a I was admiring a black Mustang GT and noticed it had the company logo on the side. Either they pay the workers really well or they had a very dedicated manager.

Also saw a black on black 1970 Charger that had been restored to like new. Excellent exhaust note. Brought back memories.

But when I got back to our storage lot I found a MB E400 and a BMW 740i as I walked to my car. Wonder who's renting those?

That Erie Canal lock I posted had been used as a trash dump for years before the town got some free grant money and spruced it up. Then for safety reasons they fenced it off and wouldn't let anyone near it. Without neighborhood kids fooling around it quickly became overgrown and now looks worse than it did before the rehabilitation.

Chik-fil-A vs Boston Market? Tow different things. Both really fine. It's 20 miles to the nearest Boston Market (sadly we were next in line for expansion and then they stopped.

Nearest Chick-fil-A is 30 miles in the other direction. In theory, they're going to build one here in town but the lot it's supposed to be on remains untouched. I'll be at the township hall in a couple of days. I'll ask the building folks what's up. Last time that happened of the three big things announced on the drawing board, none had made any application at all. Just headlines.

On canals and locks, I've seen pieces of the Welland, but have done the tour through the Soo Locks probably half a dozen times. Introduced it to people as we end up that way. Neat as all get out. They were working on them when I was last there. One lock is bigger than the others and they make freighters that just clear the big lock, so they are converting the others. Canada was upgrading at that point, too. Since there's only one Canadian lock, we didn't get to do that one. Traditionally you get up to Lake Superior level in an American lock and back down to Michigan/Huron (actually one lake but never mind that) in the Canadian lock.

I love the Upper Peninsula (of course that's because I only go in warm months) and the Mackinac Bridge is just spectacular. In theory, it was declared impossible to build several times over. It's 60 years old now so I guess they were wrong. I love the thing but it's enough that some people are afraid to drive over it, so they employ people to drive people across in their own cars and then get to go back when someone approaches from that direction. I'd love that job for a summer!

I think the caseload can be managed pretty well if you use your head. The first few months will likely be the worst. The recently appointed incumbent is returning 200+ indictments per month to prove she's "tough on crime." The problem is, unless you are closing out the same number of cases you wind up with a tremendous backlog. She's lucky if she closes out 100.per month...

Supposedly one of the best chicken places is “Royal Farms”... they just put two of them right here in Wawa country. Not sure how they are doing, but around here Wawa owns the convenience store market.

I am sure any northeasterner knows what I’m saying.

The question then becomes is it really necessary to have 200+ indictments a month? When I hear stuff like that I wonder if they are just indicting everyone for anything.

Wonder what the conviction rate is on those 200 a month indictments.

seems like they are putting up new RFs every other intersection. With WaWa responding with more stores close by. I really don't see how there is enough business to support all of them.

I will try the RF fried chicken some day to see what all the fuss is about.

They just opened a Wawa less than 1/4 mile from me. Place is always jammed - but I won’t buy any gasoline, no matter how cheap, that is not TopTier rated - and Wawa is not a TopTier rated brand. But, they will compete well with Costco gas because there is no membership requirement and many people could care less about the amount and kind of detergent additives in the gasoline they put in their cars. If your car’s engine has direct injection and you plan on keeping it for a few years or longer, they should care.

They also opened a Wawa nearer to where sandman lives which is just 3-4 miles apart. I’ve heard all the hype about their fast food stuff but they have not been thick as fleas on a dog down here - but they sure are moving in fast and “circling the wagons” so to speak.

Mike, for the length of time you keep a car....top tier gas isn't going to matter to you...maybe the next guy who buys your car though.

It could add a bit of longevity to your engine, fewer repairs, better gas mileage - but, it would wouldn't it take many years of driving or miles to notice a difference?

You are correct - but with twin turbos and the fact that this is a lease I am buried in for 3 years, why not put in Top Tier gasoline if it costs the same or less than what I pay for Wawa or Gate or Murphy or Speedway? Costco is 15-20 cents a gallon less than just about everywhere else for premium, including Wawa.

To people outside the area, the Hoagies are pretty good. I eat maybe one a month and I’ll go to the local deli (Carmen’s in Bellmawr) or hit up a Primos. They are my two favorites.

I do love their coffee, but then there is DD in every corner too.

@fezo, I just crossed the Mackinac Bridge this afternoon, after crossing the southern shore of the UP. Next week, we are going back to the UP for a few days. I also love it, but I'm not sure I would like it in winter. It's beautiful scenery and the people are very friendly.

I went to a sheetz once, in Fredricksburg VA. Was nice. Best feature, they had a beer vault (giant walk in beer fridge). That I liked.

We spent a week on the lower side of the Mackinac Bridge 3 years in as row.
I liked the signs on the main street of Mackinaw City that stated 'No Sonowmobiles allowed on the sidewalk'.
The fast boats to the island were fun, too.
Went up to Sault Ste Marie one time. Already mentioned the great locks tour.
We are going to a wedding between Traverse City and Mackinaw in August, but not enough time to head up there.

In NY(and KY) the AG is the top legal officer in the state. Commonwealth Attorney is more equivalent to a NY District Attorney. In KY the CA prosecutes felonies and submits cases to the Grand Jury for possible indictment. the County Attorney prosecutes misdemeanors and violations(mostly traffic cases).
As for the NY AG's problems, it's a pattern I have seen all too often- a self-righteous narcissist who turns out to have a multitude of skeletons in his/her closet.

Ever since their latest revamp, wawa is our go-to place. Kids love the quesedillas and the wife and I love the almond milk lattes you can now get at the counter. Better and cheaper than starbucks. We always get gas there. Not much of a choice around here. Its either that or a no-name place that charges extra to use a credit card.

so my lawyer is appearing tomorrow on my behalf at the East County Court to:

1) plead me not guilty

2) handle the Failure to Appear by first showing the Court didn't respond to my timely written letters communicating the court had erred in selecting the location for my case, that the court erred in selecting the court the Officer marked on my citation, that the Court erred in assuming my signature is valid in agreeing to appear for any Court not intended on my citation copy.

3) Motion for Change of Venue. Failure to grant the County Seat as granted by the OFficer and DEMANDED by the Defendant constitutes a gross and willful violation of VC 40502(b) https://codes.findlaw.com/ca/vehicle-code/veh-sect-40502.html (For this illegal violation; should the motion be denied, I'd like to see the Judge convicted of violating VC 40502(b), and pay a fine equivalent to my alleged "failure to appear = $300"
If the DA prosecutes the judge for this gross violation of the law, and collects a fine, I'll agree to pay my fines as well!

I hope my lawyer brings a 4'x4' blown-up high resolution image of my citation to show the Court I never signed to appear at the Court I'm charged with failing to appear at!. Better yet, a 8'x8' high resolution board picture image.

Remember, if the gloves don't fit, you must aquit!

I definitely got that impression when my 2nd letter that was sent certified/signed/return receipt by USPS was ignored for over a month now.

Still, these are the "Civil Servants" in charge of upholding our laws, not arbitrarily running them over! I don't care how busy or overworked they might be. Don't like it? Quit, and work at McDonald's! On second thought, they couldn't hack it at McD's, no one wants to wait 35 minutes for a Big Mac!

In my area we have a battle going on between two regional convinence stores too. One came out with 99 cent coffee. The other reduced their coffee to the same price but only in stores that were located across the street from their competitor.

The best coffee selection I found in a little gas station in impoverished central NY. They had every possible latte', mocha, espresso beverage you could imagine. I got a sugar free French vanilla something or other that was delicious. Quite a surprise in a town that looked like an ad for the Great Depression.

They aren't ignoring you because they are overworked or busy. They are ignoring you because they can. In a bureaucracy there is no reason to admit anything if you or your co-workers make an error. The systems are designed in such a way that they can get away with things like that. In most bureaucracies there is no accountability for performance and no consequences if you do not do your job in even a barely competent manner. I suspect that is the real reason.

I agree....for the small extra cost might as well do it...and you have a Costco near you.

Yes - about 2 miles away - and it’s on my way to where I walk every morning. Besides, there is no extra cost - Costco is TopTier gasoline 20 cents a gallon less than any place else. I use Costco 95% of the time - Marathon once in a blue moon.
