@fezo, I just crossed the Mackinac Bridge this afternoon, after crossing the southern shore of the UP. Next week, we are going back to the UP for a few days. I also love it, but I'm not sure I would like it in winter. It's beautiful scenery and the people are very friendly.
Fear of crossing bridges is a common phobia (gephyrophobia) and among the scariest are the Mackinac Bridge, the Tappan Zee, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The bridge operators find that turn around (U-turn) lanes are necessary and occasionally a driver really panics, freezes, and someone must drive them off of the bridge. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge had such an extensive problem with people avoiding it that it defaulted on its bonds. https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/business/1984/03/19/bay-tunnel-survives-dark-days/714bb32d-2ec3-42a5-9f54-d9b2857111b3/?utm_term=.6631f3dabfaa http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2331679/Chesapeake-Bay-bridge-The-Maryland-bridge-terrifying-locals-pay-25-company-shuttle-car.html
The problem with turning around and bypassing the Mackinaw bridge is that it's almost 900 miles to the other side if you avoid the bridge.

We probably should, but it seems so drastic. I could likely deal with it, but gives me a headache just thinking about trying to get my wife used to it all.

we in theory will be moving in the relatively near future. That seems like a good time to give it a try, as long as we end up in an area with reception.

The other odd thing in the text is that the clark.com claims that all grades of Shell gasoline must have the same additive package. That contradicts Shell's advertising that their super dooper premium is more additive laden than the regular and you should guy it because of that.

Obviously all Shell gas has to pass certain minimum quality standards, including those additives. Their claims on "V-Power" (such a great name) gas are based on supposed engine performance/mileage/durability, rather than specific additive content, so they're careful not to tell you that it has more of this or that than other Shell gas (they may be implying that, but not making this claim outright). They do say they have more "good stuff" than competitors (they of course won't say which ones). Regarding direct injection cars, I'd think keeping those clean may be even more important than the intake valves, but all the examples are showing port injection valves for some reason. Perhaps it's more dramatic.

Everybody has gotten into the name your additive game at one point or another. Shell is top tier, which is what counts to me. Makes a higher minimum standard to go by than the federal standards. It's the standards the auto manufacturers want, which is how the whole top tier thing started.

Mike, you got a point on the Queensboro but the GWB was designed from the start to have the lower level. They just didn't get around to it until 1957. That' the last work on crossing the River from Jersey into NYC.

Do note, no matter what you're crossing, it costs money to leave New Jersey but they let you in for free.

Michael, good luck with the new place. Try and stay in this one for a few years. I can't seem to get any traction getting my wife to go, and yours just picks up and moves on a whim.

Fez, I have never taken the ferry. It is definitely out of the way for us. But I have taken the back way to avoid 95 and DC/Baltimore entirely. You do go through a fair amount of nothing. Have also taken the long way home from NC by going all the way out 64 to Norfolk, then up over the CBBT and up the Delmarva. Getting to be too much congestion and lights now. used to be a lot quicker.

Thanks! The plan is to stay in this house until we retire. After that, we agree we want to go somewhere both warmer and less expensive. The wife wants some humidity but not too much. However, she's not fond of big bugs, which seem to permeate those exact areas.

When you move...you don't mess around Michaell. That must have set some kind of record.

My brother is moving from 1400 sq ft apartment to a 400 sq ft retirement apartment. It is taking a month to clear out his stuff......he is a hoarder. In one drawer I found about 15 nightlights in packages, and 6 extra bulbs. I found about 10 boxes of 6 lightbulbs...must have a thing for lights. About 8 new pairs of pajamas, some in original packages, 5 extra pairs of new shoes and boots. He got a new flat screen TV but kept his old cathode one just in case of a breakdown. About 20% of his stuff is getting moved, the rest goes to junk. There is no market for old furniture....they can make more hauling it away than they can trying to resell it.

Good luck hope it all goes well. I also found out, lots to do when you move, notify cable company, telephone, electric, insurance, license and on and on....I hope I never move again.

In our previous house, we were internet-only for a couple of years. Didn't bother us one bit.

When we moved here, my wife wanted at least basic cable, although I'm not sure why since she never watches. Our promo plan ends next month, so I'll likely drop to just internet again.

seems to be somewhat common. I would love it if the buyers of our house would do that. Of course, I would never consider doing it for the people we were buying a new house from!

More likely, I would buy the new place first and have 2 temporarily, though that can lead to the situation you are in if things go south. Would have to be really comfortable with the deal under contract, or have plenty of back up interest. We did that when we bought this house. At least gives you time to spruce up the new place, plus we might be buying a full "fixer uppper" and I want to fix before I move in.

the other idea, which the wife is still skeptical of, is renting a place where we want to go, while we find/build/remodel a new place. That really takes all the pressure off! we did that on the house before this one (we were building new, and sold our old condo quicker than expected, so went to an apartment for 3 months). In a way, actually more relaxing.

I used to get the heebeegeebees driving over the 59th Street Bridge in NYC (aka Queensborough Bridge) and the Brooklyn Bridge.  They are so old and over-burdened in my opinion.  The 59th Street Bridge used to have only one 3-lane access each way - now it has 2-decks of traffic - never built to handle that much.  Same with the GW Bridge.  It’s the old bridges that scare me.

Living in a city with two large suspension bridges I grew up thinking such things were fairly normal, although crossing them in strong winds and feeling them move underneath you can be very disconcerting. The newer of the two, the MacKay bridge which was opened in 1970, was a bit scary at first since its structure is below the roadbed and all that stands between you and a dive into the harbor below is a guardrail.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Murray_MacKay_Bridge

I have not had much problem with most water crossings in my years of driving. I was a bit intimidated my first few times using the bridges and tunnels in the Norfolk/Hampton Roads area but in the end find them far less scary than certain high bridges. I had two bridges that I found spooky. The first was the Quebec Bridge, which was not helped by my parents telling me about its two failures during construction as we were crossing it when I was a kid:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_Bridge

The second and more scary one was the old Sunshine Skyway, which seemed designed to terrify the users:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshine_Skyway_Bridge#Original_bridge

I remember driving across this in the early '80s after the accident and seeing the remains of the fallen section in the bay below. Add to that the steep inclines of the approach ramps and what I recall as being an open grid steel deck on the span and it was a scary crossing.

We did a rent back at no charge after closing the sale of our home for two weeks. Gave us time to have the new one scrubbed from top to bottom, have TVs mounted, and move fairly leisurely.

We have something like that called the Chicago skyway. It's a toll road (technically a bridge with a long approach as cities in illinois cannot have toll roads) connecting the Indiana toll road with the Dan Ryan expressway in Chicago. The actual bridge is 125 feet high.

It's main issue is that it's a toll road and the freeway alternative is only 4 miles or so longer. So it was way underused and it didn't raise enough in tolls to properly maintain the road. The current toll for this road is $5.00 for a car.

When one of my kids was working a company that did marketing for BMW, she spent a week at BMWUSA hq in New Jersey.
They had a car covered up in the main lobby.
After a few days, it was unveiled, a new Rolls Royce, and they let everyone get their picture taken in it.
All the other people got their pictures taken at the wheel.
She got hers taken sitting in the back. When questioned about it, she said if I'm going to sit in a Rolls Royce, I'm going to have someone drive me.
Later that year, they went to an event at Hilton Head and the head of BMWUSA asked her to watch over the keys for the 3 new Rollers on display.
She sent us a picture of the keys with the comment, I'm holding the keys to about a million dollars!

The first summer I worked at BMW I had three transporters show up at one time. Fifteen cars, all being delivered to my center. I had to clock all of them in and prepare a deal jacket(a folder with the Monroney sticker) for each car. The NCM estimated that I was responsible for about $1,500,000 worth of cars. A bit nerve wracking, to say the least...

Question for all. Has anyone cut their cable and just went with broadcast TV and supplemented it with streaming services such as Netflix? We are considering it and now have one TV hooked up with an attenia just to try it. Anyone with experience doing that?

We never had cable; too expensive to run a line to our house. I also refused deal with the satellite companies, as they wanted payment before coming to our house to determine if we had an adequate line of sight. At present we have Netflix and Amazon Prime, accessible through either my Sony BD player or my Roku streaming stick. We use the Roku to also subscribe to DirecTV NOW and Hulu. I also have an Amazon Fire Stick and I might try DirecTV with it as it is supposedly less prone to buffering issues. We also get 30 or so OTA channels from a Mohu Leaf indoor antenna.
My only gripe so far is that only the OTA stations, Netflix and Amazon have 5.1 audio. Everything else is just stereo.

When I set up the antenna and scanned for stations I counted 81 PTS channels. Eliminating the shopping, religious and foreign language stations we would be in the 35 station range.

We got the Roku streaming stick and are currently looking into all that it offers.

I do only streaming, Netflix and Amazon Prime (which gives you either free movies or pretty cheap rentals).

I've been thinking about cord-cutting since 90+% of what I get on cable I never watch but the problem here is that the only OTA channels are the 3 Canadian networks which are not good and do not carry a whole lot of live sports, which is what I mostly use TV for these days. Getting 81 or even 30 OTA channels would be impossible here. I'm not a Netflix fan but do use my Sony BR box to watch MLB TV when it isn't glitchy. The other thing is that with the way packages are sold here by the two online providers I really wouldn't save much money if any at all once I subscribed to the NFL and PGA Tour online services. I suspect, though, that this will continue to evolve with time and maybe it will improve to the point where it makes sense in the next few years.

? Folks closed on your house with you and your stuff still in there? Wow. That's mighty brave.

I've got a few minutes to expand on the goings on around here.

The folks buying our house are totally cool with us living in it for a few days before we move out. Of course, we also wrote them a $500 check as a damage deposit, which we will get back this weekend. After the movers come through, we'll give the house one last cleaning.

I wish the same could be said for the folks we bought our house from. A little backstory on it - the house is in a new development, only 2 years old. The husband got transferred out of state for work, which prompted the sale. We never met them - they signed the closing documents on Wedensday, and we did our part yesterday. The handoff has been less than pleasant - we got no codes for the garage or front door (it has a keypad, too). The fan in the laundry room doesn't seem to be working. No instructions on where the mailbox is (they are grouped in clusters around the neighborhood). And, once we had a chance to take a good look at it, we found it was pretty dirty.

Therefore, it is going to get a good scrubbing before we move in tomorrow (we've taken stuff over already, but mostly clothes). Carpets will get deep cleaned, baseboards wiped down, all surfaces will get a once over. The granite countertops were never sealed, so that is getting done, too.

My stepson is giving the gift of time and effort this Mother's Day weekend by doing some handyman stuff around the house:

New ceiling fans in bedrooms and great room.
Block off access to under the deck - don't want the dogs getting under there
Install a new front screen door
Put up a rod to hang clothes from in the laundry room

I'm at home keeping the dogs company, though I'm sure I'll have more to do later today.

Ah, that's unfortunate. Reminds me of when I closed on my house years ago. The sellers seemed very pleasant and accommodating before the closing, but on the day itself they (or their lawyer, not sure) suddenly got very difficult. I had movers loading my stuff into the van while I went to my lawyer's office for the closing, only for him to tell me they were balking about something to do with the transfer of funds from my bank to theirs and would not turn over the keys. After bunch of urgent phone calls to the bank and the respective lawyers it ended up with the movers parked out front waiting for me to arrive with the keys to let them in and cost me a couple of extra hours of their time before I could move in. And after all that half the keys I got did not even work. Really kind of soured me on the sellers.

Wow, that’s nasty. I always thought folks up your way were civil and nice. ;)

some people are, to be blunt, scum. how hard is it to leave basic stuff like codes? Hopefully the sellers side can track them down and get what you need. The mailbox at least, someone in the neighborhood should be able to tell you where that is.

I remember when we were in the process of buying our current house (20 years ago now), I was at my agents office for something, and there was a family sitting in the lobby, looking unhappy. I asked about it, and the agent told me that they were buying and selling, same day. so they had everything loaded on a moving truck, closed on the old house, then went to close on the new one. And something went haywire, and they could not close. So everything they owned was on a truck (meter running), the old house was gone, and they had no place to go. Oops.

no clue if they worked out the details finally, but my (at this point very fuzzy) recollection was that the deal was dead, short of a bunch of legal wrangling which is not always quick.

made me glad that we were able to overlap (we bought the new house and carried both for a bit). Not the most cost effective way to do it, but much more convenient!

Our agent found the correct mailbox, after about an hour of trial and error.

We've asked our agents to get in touch with the sellers agent for the access codes.

I didn’t know our correct mailbox either. Coming from the country, that problem never occurred to me. The sellers probably had too much on their plate. So many things to remember when you move!

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But when push comes to shove they're just a bunch of ruffian hockey players. OK, one of them plays pickleball, but you get my point. :o

When I sold my first house, I wrote a manual for everything I could think of with the house and left it on the kitchen counter.

we got one of those with our current house. Big ziplock bag with every manual for the appliances, details about the town services, and names of people that did stuff for them (like landscapers). All the stuff related to putting on the deck, etc. And many pages of very detailed notes. Was quite nice to have.

I would do something similar. Just not likely as elaborate!

I did the same. Not even a thank you.

Sellers of our house left me a manual, a bunch of spare parts, keys to everything, and then emailed me about a month after we moved in to find out what questions we had and if everything was OK. Almost fell off my chair when I received that email.

Ab is in Canada and has the ATS.

Off to Seattle for a few days....want to see the fish getting thrown, market, underground city, space needle. Go Friday, return Monday....have to see it all on Sat and Sun.
Note to the fans: Might not be around much for a few days, have to manage without me.
Note to the Non-fans: See if you can get along without me.

I’m off too - up to Ponte Vedra for a weekend at the Players Championship.  We have passes for Saturday and Sunday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach.  Praying for good weather.

Enjoy Mike. I have been lucky enough to play that course a couple of times. Very beautiful and frightfully intimidating. Hit the green both times on 17.

Question for all. Has anyone cut their cable and just went with broadcast TV and supplemented it with streaming services such as Netflix? We are considering it and now have one TV hooked up with an attenia just to try it. Anyone with experience doing that?

Yes, and no. I have never had cable, and I haven't had "TV" in over twenty years. We watch movies from time to time on our box, and we stream short videos of interest when we can.

We were super-high-tech this year and watched the Super Bowl via streaming. However, we had to steam at a very low resolution since our service is rather pathetic. We streamed it through my wife's laptop (and it didn't look too bad on that, but it was very small) to our flat screen, which is something like 40", and we could see the action, but not really the details of faces and whatnot.

All in all, it worked out okay.

I don't miss ready access to "TV." Not one bit. If you have modern internet access, you can even watch most television shows (anything on the major providers) via the corporate websites. They do have commercials, but still far fewer than what is on the airwaves, and you can watch them any time you want. Most limit access to a small window around he original air date, but that small window is 2-3 weeks, so lots of time there.

I will give up my satellite (or cable) TV, and especially my DVR, when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. I love sports too much to do any type of streaming thing. The ability to time shift and FF through commercials on the DVR is worth the monthly bill to me and the missus.

I am loving the house moving stories! I would definitely be one to go a little "over the top" on trying to make sure the next owners were informed.

However, as with most of my life, I'm so unconventional that I really don't have a clue about the experiences y'all relayed here! When I bought my current place, it was just a swath of forest next to an overgrown lane. I even dug my driveway out of the hillside myself. It's going to feel kinda strange when we move on from here.

One the few sports fans here, cable makes it the easiest to get the most choices.
Just about never watch news or series. Occasionally, a movie. OK, we do watch some of those home improvement/sales series.
