Well, when it rains it pours. In the past four weeks I lost 5 family members. My brother and uncle (diabetes), my cousin... a commuter airline pilot(coronary), an other cousin (uterine cancer), and my brother in law (alzheimer's).

My BIL was like a father to me for about 50 years. He came down with dementia only two years ago. He deteriorated so quickly that the suddenness of his death is hard to explain.

We had a loss in our family not long ago. My sister-in-law, something of a health nut, was gone from one day to the next at age 59. Stroke. I'm almost 54, and so it got me to thinking what I might want to do in the next c. 5 years. To my surprise one of the things I want to do is explore more via car both my own city and surrounding countryside, as well as maybe take day trips or even overnighters. I've been doing that already on a small scale for several years, but I've been doing it much more the last few months, since the death. I'm also getting a folding bike I can put in the trunk of my car for this, and I already have a nice scooter, called a Xootr that I use for exploring, going to our many great parks in Louisville. Having a car with built-in AndroidAuto for Google maps has been almost essential for this, in order to navigate accurately with less stress to places in town or outside of town I've never been to before. Sometimes I get to go with my kids and/or my wife, but I also just go myself and seize the day once I get enough work done.

ab348 --- hang in there - prayers for you and abacomike to get better.

thebean - cancer took my niece at only 4 years of age. I've never cried so much out in public as I did at her funeral. Still upsets me. Both of my parents died of cancer and both of my grandma's did, too. So it's definitely in my family. Hang in there, thebean, I know you'll fight hard. I want you to know I'm pulling for all three of you.

I haven't been on here much the last several months but I always keep up with reading all of the posts. So I'm not going anywhere. But, the bean, keep fighting this and you have my prayers and best wishes!

Sadly, Eunice Gayson, the very first Bond girl, who starred in 1962's 'Dr.No' with Sean Connery, has passed away at the age of 90.

She is also the only Bond Girl to appear in two films in the franchise, as she starred in 1963's From Russia With Love.

Yes, the scooter/Xootr is a lot of fun! It's made of a lightweight magnesium alloy. The new models unfold like this, which is great. But mine is c. 3 years old and so the last generation of design, and I need to lock a pin into it after unfolding it. Only takes a minute, but the button is clearly a better design. These are made in usa in PA. Below is a pic of me in a park with my scooter, resting in the middle of a big uphill stretch in a large park on the outskirts of Louisville. Had to use my car and google maps to get to this park I'd looked up just that day for the first time.

My Accord is a 2016 EX. My wife's is a 2013 EXL-navi. And so we don't have the new design. Sorry. I'm halfway warming up to the new 2018 Accord, but it still looks strange. In "real life" it looks somehow better than in pix to me for some reason, but I can't figure out how or why that would be....?

Bean, sometimes those tests are meaningless. Find out for sure before treatment, etc. I have always heard that when something really bad happens, it is not the event that matters, it is the way you handle it that is important. Sounds like you have the right attitude. Best of luck and prayers.

Bought my first of several Accords in 1979, soon after we arrived in Kansas City from San Francisco. It was their first 4-door, dark red, 5-speed. Still one of my favorites. We packed up our two boys, ages, 11 and 4, and drove that little jewel to Panama City Florida for a week in the sun. Drove beautifully on those little 13 inch tires. That car was so quiet, I heard a very slight clicking sound one day. It turned out to be a loose lid on a ball point pen I had stuck under the visor. Amazing! I've owned 4 or 5 more Accords over the years, but that one is still my favorite.

The first Accord I drove was a 1986 rental car.....the one with the hidden headlights. It was a unique experience after driving mostly larger American cars. I thought of it as a little jewel, so smooth and quiet, and it just hummed along.

Back to the medical file... apparently a lot of the issues cleared up overnight and they are again hinting I might go home today w/o need of a pacemaker. But until those discharge papers are in hand I'm not getting too excited.

Hey stick, driver100, all the usual suspects, how are you all? Mrs. iluvmysephia1 and I are all moved in, we closed on this house the end of March and moved out of the temporary apartment the hospital put us up in and into our house a week or so in to April.

As to ~~needing~~ buying a new car, ahh, the Soul will hit 100,000 miles in about 165 more miles. It's still getting the job done and we owe two more years of fairly low ($250/month) payments on it. Needs a 100,000 mile service and it will be fine.

My latest amusement is the 2017 Nissan Sentra S 6-speed stick selling for only $12,987 at Planet Nissan of Lost Wages. It only has 135 miles on it! No kidding - someone bought the Fresh Powder (white) Sentra with only 127 miles on it the past week, because I looked on their website last weekend and these two Sentra S sticks were there.

I'm reading KBB reviews of the car right now. People are honest, you guys ever want to know about how owners are digging their cars, go to KBB reviews and read up. So far reviews are good to excellent, though one guy bought one who's a mechanic, and he says the paint has chipped in 9 places in a year of Sentra ownership. Ahh, yeah right. He says Nissan didn't paint the body color under the hood, too. Umm...excuse me, some people might call that cheap, but, I call it simply a large carmaker saving cash.

And it doesn't hurt my feelings that Nissan wants to save money on production, either.

Why, thank you, Mike! I appreciate the sentiments. It’s been a good weekend for a birthday. Weather’s been good. My son took me to dinner at a good Italian joint (non-chain) Friday night (and paid for it). My friend, who happens to be female, took me to my favorite bourbon bar, AND PAID FOR not so cheap drinks.

Today, there’s a cookout with some friends.

Simple stuff, but appreciated and loved all the same.

just booked a couple of nights in Saratoga (end of next week) for a little getaway with the wife (taking advantage of daughter being home to watch the dog). Now just have to plan some activities. I would consider the car museum, but not sure that will fly with her!

maybe need to hit the brewery first.

This is a flag football weekend for us. Yesterday, with my son as QB in the 2nd half, we racked up 27 pts to win the final playoff of the bracket, sending us to the "super bowl" this afternoon. (I'm the defense coach.)

@houdini1, you're right. Attitude is key when things start to turn south. Thanks for the good thoughts. @benjaminh, very cool scooter! Foldable bikes have always intrigued me for vacations.

Bean, cancer is not a death sentence like it was 20 years ago. I am living proof of that - at least at this point in time. You are aware that 2 years ago I had part of my liver cut out because of 3 malignant tumors in the right lobe. Sure it took 3 months for me to regain my strength and rehabbed in 2 facilities.

I would just suggest that you do as your doctors prescribe and make sure they are always up front with you. We can’t deal with untruths - but we CAN deal with the truth.

My doctors - all 7 of them - gave me a 20% chance of surviving the surgery. Then, after the surgery, they said there was a 70% chance the cancer will return. So, I live day-by-day with that hanging over my head. I have so many illnesses and handicaps that I just refuse to let them get to me. I walk when I can and shop for food - but I get fatigued quickly - but I keep plugging along.

I am forever having PET Scans, CT Scans, ultrasounds of my left leg - to check on a blood clot - and of my liver to check for tumors. I take insulin 2 times a day and have to prick my fingers twice a day to check my blood sugar levels. I have limited feeling and constant pain in my toes, feet and ankles as a side effect of diabetes. I take blood pressure medication, blood thinners, and 8 other medications daily. I just developed psoriasis on my elbows and all my fingers and hands - taking UVB treatments 3 times a week to clear it up but has not been very successful. I can’t take the new psoriasis medications due to my weakened liver.

2 years ago, my son was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He was given a 5-10 percent chance of surviving in 5 years. After many proton radiation treatments over 6 months, the tumor is undetectable. Miracles happen every day - thanks to GOD.

I write this for you “bean” to show you that things could be much worse for you and that even with all that I am confronted with daily, life goes on. It takes physical and emotional strength to live with all that life dishes out to us. I pray for you and that you will find the strength - emotional and physical - to accept your disease as merely a setback in life’s wonders and know that the cancer you have is treatable and has a high percentage of successful results.

Here's the brand of foldable bike I'm getting by mail in a few weeks, although we are getting a slightly different model. It's an aluminum alloy bike that weighs about 26 lbs. My daughter is getting the same model in a different color, and the plan is that we'll do some riding together. My son, who already owns a bike (non-folding) plans to join us. This 2-minute video shows a customer unfolding and then riding the bike in a parking lot. It's a 7-speed bike.

Thanks all for your condolences and sympathies. Mike, quite true about aging process but my cousins were 54 and 55 respectively. The sad part about the pilot is that the airline's doctor cleared him for flying. Thank God his heart attack did not happen while he was flying.

Well, it seems like I left BMW of Louisville not a moment too soon; AMSI has installed a new management team(the third since I started there in June 2016, if you're keeping score). The new guys have bumped up the Doc Fee to $599, and added a non-negotiable pack for $1,500- which gets you wheel locks, window tint, and mop and glow. On top of that, they've fired/run off all but a couple of the long time sales people and replaced them with young green peas who-as one insider commented-can't even spell BMW;
On top of that, the GM is also responsible for the Cadillac and Volvo stores.
BMWUSA will go nuts if/when they find out...

I see that more and more at dealers--those "pack stickers" on the window. These are *sometimes* legitimate factory-installed options but more often than not, useless dealer add-ons, like "pinstriping", vehicle recovery ID, or flashing 3rd brake light. All high profit items.

Southeast Toyota are masters of that game. They load that junk at port and combine it into the Monroney sticker. It’s rather unusual to see the packs on luxury/upscale brand.

Yes, I am finally home! Interesting scenario unfolded where the duty doc in CICU yesterday absolutely, positively said I needed a pacemaker because the valve job damaged the electrical pathways in my heart. When I woke up this morning the first two things the nurse attending to me said were (1) "Good morning" and (2) "You're going home today." When I questioned that she told me that the heart monitor showed that all the concerning signals had cleared up overnight and now things were looking pretty good. I was dubious but later in the morning after more vitals and exams, a different duty doc came in and gave me a clean bill of health, so I was out of there just after lunch.

I am not feeling too bad, certainly a little weak but that is to be expected. My sister is staying with me for a while. I will take things slow and easy for the next while and try to build some stamina. Certainly glad to be home!!

I luv....they expect you to pay the same $12987 even though the car has 135 miles instead of 127 the other one had? I would demand a discount, at least $1 a mile.
The Sentra is an incredible bargain at $13k though.......but I think you are wise to keep your Soul going and pay it down.
Good suggestion about KBB, I like real people reviews.

Yes sir! Like @abacomike said...you can beat it! I had a battle 10 years ago, beat it with surgery and some radiation and I’m fine to this day. Well fine physically anyway, I’ve never been fine in the head.
