    Well, on Friday, I became a statistic; one of 17,000 Worldcom employees laid off. Out of 20 people in our group, 5 were laid off. Normally, that would be a bad thing; but Susan, Michael, and myself see it as an golden opportunity to get out of Florida, as we've been wanting to do. We will take the next few days to figure out our next moves; meanwhile, I'm redoing my resume. If any of you know of IT opportunities, even other careers, or burger flipping jobs (j/k) in the NY area, New Jersey, Metro DC, Virginia, Maryland, Chicago, or Southwest, please feel free to send me an e-mail(in my profile).

    I'm celebrating, all right, but for a different reason. Brazil WORLD CUP CHAMPS! Woo hoo!

    Serge: hang in there. I started my new job today, and while the process can be painful, you'll end up better off, like I did (more motivated, more appreciated, plus I'm getting a raise).

    Lots of jobs in DTP, that type of thing. Dot bombs means there is a glut of web design talent here, so I'd focus on another niche. Try Monster.com, they have lots of jobs listed for this area.

    You were in the first round of layoffs, and believe me, that is a blessing. There will likely be 2nd and maybe even a 3rd round of cuts. It's better to know sooner rather than later.

    Serge -- Sorry to hear that you were part of the Worldcom shakedown. I think you have the right attitude. Hang in there and create new opportunities for yourself!

    juice -- You were the first thing that came to mind when I learned of Brazil's victory. Congratulations!

    juice...don't know how many before bankruptcy comes...as you said, I'm lucky; at least I'm getting a severance package. With bankruptcy, that won't happen.
    We are looking forward to leaving Florida...this place is a hell-hole of rude people that don't gave a **** about anything.

    Serge: my condolences; sorry to hear you are a victim of executive mismanagement. Severance will help soften the blow. Will keep my eyes open for you as I work for a consulting firm that does IT (though I don't personally).

    In the 90's, I was layed off after a merger. Until I was forced to look for a new job, I hadn't realize how limiting the old position had been. Sometimes change is a good thing. Glad you're embracing it.

    I learned that it is always better to terminate someone on a Monday, and not a Friday. Why? Because that terminated person can corrective action immediately. When you lay someone off on a Friday, they have the whole weekend to get depressed, and not take positive steps towards getting re-employed.

    Sounds like Worldcom prefers to be cruel rather than humane.

    Wife is due any day now. Officially it's due July 21, but noone thinks she'll wait that long.

    You guys want to do a pool for fun? Pick a date, and weight, too (to the ounce). As a hint, our daughter was born June 4 (with a due date of June 5) and weighed 8 lbs 4 ounces. This one is a boy.

    Any guesses?

    Serge - Hang in there! After relaxing for half of my severance, it took me a total of 15 months to get back into the rat race. Of course, it didn't help that I was looking to go back to what I was doing 10 years earlier. (Which was like the fifth or sixth item down on my resume. In hindsight, I should have reformatted my resume to something other than chronological.) The bottom line: making more $ than the old job and really enjoying what I'm doing. Best of luck to you!

    She can no longer stand the "heat" upstairs, despite the A/C set to 68 degrees F. She's sleeping in the basement, which is so cold you'd need AWD to maneuver around the ice.

    Just caught up on the posts after vaction, then a death in the family.

    BTW, I just saw the headline come across: Subaru June sales overall were down slightly, but Forester sales were up due to the new 2003.
    "Subaru recorded total sales of 15,695 units for the month, a decrease of 11 percent
    from last year's record June total. To date, Subaru has sold 85,556 units in
    2002, down slightly from last year's total of 88,951 units for the comparable
    period.
    Strong demand for the all-new 2003 Forester helped establish a new June
    sales record for this popular sport-utility with 5,189 units recorded, up 6
    percent from June 2001. Subaru Legacy and Outback recorded sales totals 7,362
    and 5,539 units, respectively. Subaru Impreza achieved a total of 3,144 unit
    sales for the month."

    Good to see sales are up on the new models. I think overall the automobile market is down, isn't it ? Subaru has been holding its own in a soft market since 9/11, so it's not all bad.

    That said, the competition is getting better. The latest CR review of small wagons didn't treat the OBS kindly. It got dinged on handling, performance and cargo room. While still recommended, it finished well down the list.

    Interestingly, CR decided that the differences between small wagons ala the OBS, Matrix, etc and small SUV's ala the CRV and Forester are none too great, and did a comparison across all of them in their summary.

    Not that CR is gospel, but a lot of prospective buyers start there. The OBS review won't help.

    I just got back from a five day trip out to the east coast(new york city, new jersey, and connecticut.) Although subarus' are becoming more popular here in the st. louis area, I have never seen so many until I was out at the east coast. They are everywhere, kind of like hondas and toyotas. I saw most of the subaru lineup, but only a few wrxs and only one wrx wagon. If I learned anything from this trip is that new york city drivers, and new jersey drivers(around new york) are some crazy drivers. I saw things done with 80,000 dollar cars I wouldn't do with a rental car. If I had to drive there everyday, I would own a old 70s ford ltd; can't do any damage to those things. But I enjoyed the trip and everyone was very friendly.

    Mine LOVE to wash and wax...as long as there is the promise of $$ for a job well done. And the older they get the higher the amount. Our negotiations take longer than doing the job myself. ;-)

    I think it depends on the state and/or insurance policy.

    In NJ there are no passengers allowed during timed runs. Fun runs anyone can ride along as long as they wear a helmet and are strapped in.

    Upstate we do "5 years combined experience" which basically means you can't have 2 n00bs riding together.
