My ticket this past summer was the gall bladder attack and subsequent surgery. Lost about 15 lbs in the process (but gained some of it back since).
My undoing has been all of the business travel in the past two months. When I am at home and the office, I have a pretty set routine that includes a good balance of food (with proper restraint) and exercise. But when you are away, you have A) Excellent restaurant food,
Heck, I even gained weight in Japan - almost unheard of!

Well, just had LASIK surgery yesterday, and I'm very impressed with the results. I went from 20/400 R and 20/300 L, to 20/20 R and 20/40 L in 24 hours. I can see as well as with glasses or contacts already.
I'm a happy camper. It'll be a huge pleasure to donate all those glasses!
Sandy looks better than ever when I look at her with my own eyes!

Bob
I'm with you bro...
Bob (at 57, and aging fast!)
Congrats! I'm glad it went well! My buddy got LASIK done last year and he told me that immediately after the surgery, he took a peek from under the bandage and immediately noticed a difference.
No more getting up and searching around for your glasses!
Ken
No bandage here. For PRK you get one, but I ended up having LASIK. I was happy, because the recovery is much quicker (indeed, I'm fine now).
Hutch: you were right buddy! Hutch had it a while ago and was one of the people that talked me into doing it.
Steve: you gonna wait for the new look (next summer), or buy the oval light WRX?
-juice
(j/k)...glad it went well; Susan has been thinking about it also.
Thought your corneal thickness precluded LASIK - what happened to make you eligible again?
Heal well!
Cheers!

Everyday gets better, for about 4 weeks. My original eyesight was about the same as yours. I ended up with 20/20 and 20/30 .. an A.K. enhancement (which was a piece of cake)brought me back to 20/20 factory spec's. Easy process .. just do it.
- Hutch
That is the problem of being 'too close' to a given technology - you know what can go wrong. Same with the excimer type lasers they use. I have a variety of gas and solid state lasers that I have purchased over the years as prep tools for my FIB work. They require an incredible amount of 'care and feeding' to stay rock solid consistent in output - a critical feature when they are going to shoot it at your one and only pair of eyes!!!
Steve
Congrats on the LASIK. Out of curiousity, did you go to an individual doctor, or one of these eye centers?
Mark
Paul: I was a borderline case. The staff thought I would need to get PRK, but the doctor consulted with me and thought I'd be fine with their Bausch & Lomb laser. It's higher tech because it has laser eye tracking and all the other latest stuff. It also cost more than their Visx laser, but what price can you put on your sight?
I'd been considering it for more than a decade. I think they were able to answer all my questions, things like the eye tracking, halo, haze, etc.
Steve: dive in. The bug eyes will always be unique and have a cult following, not unlike any of the best Subies, basically. The new one, being more attractive, could be considered too mainstream! LOL
Hutch: I'll ask about the AK enhancement. They wait at least 3 months for the eye to heal completely. I'm happy because they've already corrected my vision as good as glasses could.
The place seemed very "sterile", i.e. new office, new laser, everything clean and sterile. I went to Lasik Plus in Rockville. FWIW, their Tysons Corner location didn't look nearly as neat and I would NOT have done the surgery there.
Prices start at $500 per eye, but you know how it goes, noone qualifies for the cheapest plan. I paid about $1200 per eye for the Bausch and Lomb with a lifetime free correction guarantee, and all the follow-ups included.
The $2400 is about the price of a turbo kit, maybe a little less, but I'd choose visual precision to hit that apex just right over a few extra horsepower, any day.

Now I'm sure you can see me typing here in California, right?
For anyone who hasn't heard - we're having a get-together on Saturday night in Baltimore, check the Crew Cafe for details. Ken is coming from the west coast so we decided to have an impromptu Crew Meet at Mick O'Shea's, and Loosh will play some live music for us!
paisan is trying to plan a road trip and Dave might come with him (I'll let you figure out which "Dave"), so we could get a dozen or so people already. Join us if you can!

For those with a fast connnection, here are some Subaru television ads from the subaru-global site. I haven't seen these in the US (then again, PBS doesn't play many commercials

"The Herd" - Legacy

"The Ice Dance" - Outback

"The Surfers" - Forester
"The Herd", an image ad, is good; I like the music. "The Ice Dance" is not my favorite. "The Surfers" is funny.
Enjoy.

Nice links. First time to see those clips, too. I actually liked the skater one and not so much the "herd". The Forester one was funny, but doesn't say much about the drivers as it does about the vehicle! ;-)
The SOJ website has lots more videos. Check out the Forester site:
http://www.subaru.co.jp/forester/fascination/index.html
It's in Japanese, but click on the tab on the right that says "TV-CM". You should be able to access the three commercials for the JDM.
Also from that start page, if you click on the topmost tab (it's all in Japanese), it'll give you access to two short films "Wings of an Angel" and "The Mission" created just for the Forester. The narration is in Japanese.
Ken
I poked around on the Legacy site but didn't find any videos. If you see any, please post them. Thanks.

OTOH I will get to do some pleasure travel in a couple of months. Nov. 26 -Dec. 9 my wife and I will travel to Paris, Venice and Florence. My first trip to those three locales, not hers.
Juice: glad to hear Lasik went well. Didn;t realize you needed it. My dad had it a couple of years ago and he's mostly happy. I don;t know that I'm a good candidate; IIRC I'm 20/100 and 20/200 but with glasses I correct to 20/10 in both eyes.
Ed
I liked reading about the "Mechanism" as well as the company history.

Ken
My latest favorite is the one for the Baja where they show the BRAT. A close 2nd is the Outback ad where the Explorer scares away the deer.
Ed: I bet you're a great candidate.
Drove last night for the first time since the surgery, and I'd argue that my vision is better overall than with glasses, because I have much better (i.e. some) peripheral vision. Also, a tiny bit of glare, but no worse than with contacts. And it's still healing.

GET THE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE!!!!!
Matter of fact in the week I have been back I notice the traffic on the threads appears to be very light compared to in the spring when I left for the lake.
Cheers Pat.
Jim
Looks like I'll be out of the Crew loop for a while since I'll be in Colorado the next 2 weeks. Ya'll have fun!
Brenda
Bob
Pat: guilty, I took the week off, except Monday.
Brenda: we missed you. I could almost keep up this time! ;-)
Sandy pulled through for me again today. We had a wet basement (ugh) and I hauled away about 500 square feet of damp carpet and padding. All fit inside, hauled away, piece of cake.
Insurance covered it, thankfully, but this time can you say "Ceramic Tile"?
I'm quite lookin' forward to meeting my long lost brother from the West Coast (Ken was my first "friend" on Edmunds.com) tommorow, should be quite a meet. I've also been wanting to see Loosh play live for ages, and I finally get the chance. A couple of cold ones with my co-Crew Chiefs, does it get any better than that?
OK, maybe if we were all guest drivers for the Subaru WRC team, but let's be realistic folks! :-)

Mad Max and the sequesls have to be classics (early Mel Gibson). For those of you who didn't see any of the series, I'd call it Post Apocolypse Road Rage.
Another memorable one was an early Steven Spielberg flick. Name might have been Duel, but I'm not certain. A salesman driving an old beater (Chysler product, I think) passes a trucker and irriates him in the process. rest of the flick is a series of chase scenes as the motorist tries to avoid and escape from the evil trucker. Still on late night TV occasionally. Not sure if it was Spielberg's first or not, but definitely early.
Road trip coming up next week, so I'll have to be sure not to antagonize the truckers.
Mike's correct. Duel was an early Steven Speilberg film starring Dennis Hopper. The menace of the truck is the key ingredient here. I think the truck is a bigger player than Hopper.
Coming as the next big film after Easy Rider for Hopper, it was made for TV but given a cinema release in Europe soon after. I think it was released much later in the USA. I've always thought it was better as a late nighter, where it pops up regularly.
Cheers
Graham
Brenda who might not be remembering correctly
Jim
Cheers Pat.
What's this about Italy? Are you going on vacation? I was there in the summer of 2000 (Venice, Rome, Assisi, Sienna, Florence, Milano) and just this past summer (Sicily). It's got to be one of my favorite places to travel.
If you go, RENT A CAR! Not for the big cities, but for travelling between them. Umbria and Tuscany are beautiful, easy to drive (the autostrada is very well done) and most importantly, it gets you to a lot more places that would take lots of time via bus/train.
Best gelato -- Giolitti's in Rome (a few blocks in from the Pantheon). I ate LOTS of gelato in Italy and this place wins hands down. I think my wife and I went there every day while in Rome.
Let me know if you need any suggestions.
