I was thinking along the lines of Sue when reading the past 20 posts. Get sick and lose the weight!!! It is harsh, but it works....
My ticket this past summer was the gall bladder attack and subsequent surgery. Lost about 15 lbs in the process (but gained some of it back since).

My undoing has been all of the business travel in the past two months. When I am at home and the office, I have a pretty set routine that includes a good balance of food (with proper restraint) and exercise. But when you are away, you have A) Excellent restaurant food, B) Too much alcohol, C) Long days with an abundance of stress, D) Little time for my regular exercise - ie. biking, lawn work, playing with Emily, etc.

Heck, I even gained weight in Japan - almost unheard of!

Vermont is definitely Subaru Country. I am very surprised that we don't have anyone on this board from that part of the world...

Interesting that well over half of Impreza sales are the WRX.

Well, just had LASIK surgery yesterday, and I'm very impressed with the results. I went from 20/400 R and 20/300 L, to 20/20 R and 20/40 L in 24 hours. I can see as well as with glasses or contacts already.

I'm a happy camper. It'll be a huge pleasure to donate all those glasses!

Sandy looks better than ever when I look at her with my own eyes!

Good news, Juice! And welcome back. These boards were silent as a tomb with you gone. I've begun negotiations with my bank about a car loan. Subie bliss might not be too far away. Still undecided, but I'm beginning to think that if I can't make an immature car purchase at 60 I don't know when I ever can. Immature = red WRX.

No pain, or any (healing) complications?

    juice,

Congrats! I'm glad it went well! My buddy got LASIK done last year and he told me that immediately after the surgery, he took a peek from under the bandage and immediately noticed a difference.

No more getting up and searching around for your glasses!

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
No pain at all. Healing nicely. Had the one day checkup and the "flap" has no wrinkles or anything. Lookin' good.

No bandage here. For PRK you get one, but I ended up having LASIK. I was happy, because the recovery is much quicker (indeed, I'm fine now).

Hutch: you were right buddy! Hutch had it a while ago and was one of the people that talked me into doing it.

Steve: you gonna wait for the new look (next summer), or buy the oval light WRX?

How many fingers am I holding up??????????
(j/k)...glad it went well; Susan has been thinking about it also.

Juice: I'm garnering up the courage myself... so far, it's taken a couple years. Glad to hear yours went well. I'm 20/400+ L 20/200+ R myself - hard to see myself in a mirror!

Thought your corneal thickness precluded LASIK - what happened to make you eligible again?

    Heal well!

    Cheers!

Juice: Arghh! They just sold the red bugeye WRX I was considering. I'd love to wait for the new model, but that would mean one more year in the ancient Quest. Decisions, decisions.

    Juice,
Everyday gets better, for about 4 weeks. My original eyesight was about the same as yours. I ended up with 20/20 and 20/30 .. an A.K. enhancement (which was a piece of cake)brought me back to 20/20 factory spec's. Easy process .. just do it.

Juice: glad to hear it went well. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I worked on an project to improve burr removal on the opthalmic blades. They can be very nasty looking and leave stuff behind. I keep one on my desk as a reminder of why I have not gone for the surgery myself!! I understand that there is a new 'no blade' Lasik procedure available. Heard it on a commercial just last week.

That is the problem of being 'too close' to a given technology - you know what can go wrong. Same with the excimer type lasers they use. I have a variety of gas and solid state lasers that I have purchased over the years as prep tools for my FIB work. They require an incredible amount of 'care and feeding' to stay rock solid consistent in output - a critical feature when they are going to shoot it at your one and only pair of eyes!!!

    Juice,

Congrats on the LASIK. Out of curiousity, did you go to an individual doctor, or one of these eye centers?

    Mark
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Serge: two? :-)

Paul: I was a borderline case. The staff thought I would need to get PRK, but the doctor consulted with me and thought I'd be fine with their Bausch & Lomb laser. It's higher tech because it has laser eye tracking and all the other latest stuff. It also cost more than their Visx laser, but what price can you put on your sight?

I'd been considering it for more than a decade. I think they were able to answer all my questions, things like the eye tracking, halo, haze, etc.

Steve: dive in. The bug eyes will always be unique and have a cult following, not unlike any of the best Subies, basically. The new one, being more attractive, could be considered too mainstream! LOL

Hutch: I'll ask about the AK enhancement. They wait at least 3 months for the eye to heal completely. I'm happy because they've already corrected my vision as good as glasses could.

The place seemed very "sterile", i.e. new office, new laser, everything clean and sterile. I went to Lasik Plus in Rockville. FWIW, their Tysons Corner location didn't look nearly as neat and I would NOT have done the surgery there.

Prices start at $500 per eye, but you know how it goes, noone qualifies for the cheapest plan. I paid about $1200 per eye for the Bausch and Lomb with a lifetime free correction guarantee, and all the follow-ups included.

The $2400 is about the price of a turbo kit, maybe a little less, but I'd choose visual precision to hit that apex just right over a few extra horsepower, any day.

Congrats on successful LASIK! It was a good choice. My husband did PRK 15 years ago, and they really botched it. He's back in the same glasses by now, plus all the drawbacks (haze, halos, a bit of double vision here and there...)

Now I'm sure you can see me typing here in California, right?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Poor guy, tell him I feel for him.

For anyone who hasn't heard - we're having a get-together on Saturday night in Baltimore, check the Crew Cafe for details. Ken is coming from the west coast so we decided to have an impromptu Crew Meet at Mick O'Shea's, and Loosh will play some live music for us!

paisan is trying to plan a road trip and Dave might come with him (I'll let you figure out which "Dave"), so we could get a dozen or so people already. Join us if you can!

juice, glad your LASIK went well.

For those with a fast connnection, here are some Subaru television ads from the subaru-global site. I haven't seen these in the US (then again, PBS doesn't play many commercials ;)

    http://www.subaru-global.com/lineup/legacy/wagon/download/

    "The Herd" - Legacy

    http://www.subaru-global.com/lineup/outback/download/

    "The Ice Dance" - Outback

    http://www.subaru-global.com/lineup/forester/download/

    "The Surfers" - Forester

"The Herd", an image ad, is good; I like the music. "The Ice Dance" is not my favorite. "The Surfers" is funny.

    Enjoy.

    Mike,

Nice links. First time to see those clips, too. I actually liked the skater one and not so much the "herd". The Forester one was funny, but doesn't say much about the drivers as it does about the vehicle! ;-)

The SOJ website has lots more videos. Check out the Forester site:

    http://www.subaru.co.jp/forester/fascination/index.html

It's in Japanese, but click on the tab on the right that says "TV-CM". You should be able to access the three commercials for the JDM.

Also from that start page, if you click on the topmost tab (it's all in Japanese), it'll give you access to two short films "Wings of an Angel" and "The Mission" created just for the Forester. The narration is in Japanese.

    Ken

  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
Thanks for the videos. Too bad "The Mission" isn't available on the SoA site, as it a) is in English and b) has many US references, like Elvis and Area 51.

I poked around on the Legacy site but didn't find any videos. If you see any, please post them. Thanks.

The travel has really got me beat. Monday through yesterday was Boston. Drove a big black Grand Marquis the last three days; in a suit all three days with the Persol sunglasses and the crewcut I've been sporting of late I must have cut an, erm, interesting figure. Doing more training tomorrow, catching up today. Next week it's back to Puerto Rico Friday-next Tuesday.

OTOH I will get to do some pleasure travel in a couple of months. Nov. 26 -Dec. 9 my wife and I will travel to Paris, Venice and Florence. My first trip to those three locales, not hers.

Juice: glad to hear Lasik went well. Didn;t realize you needed it. My dad had it a couple of years ago and he's mostly happy. I don;t know that I'm a good candidate; IIRC I'm 20/100 and 20/200 but with glasses I correct to 20/10 in both eyes.

Haven't found any more videos on the SOJ website. However, I've noticed that they've made several changes to their website including adding a section called "Subaru Spirits". It's a webpage that has links into the company history, technology and other accomplishments. The text is in Japanese, but Babelfish does a decent job in giving you the gist of what's there (I checked).

I liked reading about the "Mechanism" as well as the company history.

Most Subie ads are cool. I even liked the infamous "bunny ad" for the Forester. ;-)

My latest favorite is the one for the Baja where they show the BRAT. A close 2nd is the Outback ad where the Explorer scares away the deer.

    Ed: I bet you're a great candidate.

Drove last night for the first time since the surgery, and I'd argue that my vision is better overall than with glasses, because I have much better (i.e. some) peripheral vision. Also, a tiny bit of glare, but no worse than with contacts. And it's still healing.

Whats this? nobody work Fridays anymore? I notice the number of posts are way down on Fridays.
Matter of fact in the week I have been back I notice the traffic on the threads appears to be very light compared to in the spring when I left for the lake.

    Cheers Pat.

I just saw the Forester videos, thanks for the link kens. Seems like they had a right hand drive forester turbo in california for the movie, I recognized a lot of the places they went to. I wish I had known, a turbo forester right in my backyard and I missed it. :(

If you get a chance, take a little trip to the Pompeii area and visit Amalfi. I spent a semester in Italy when I was at A&M, and those four days were by far my favorite. The town specializes in lemon delicacies, like lemon chocolate and lemoncello (light lemon liqeure, fantastic!) I have too many stories to tell about that semester, and I can't wait to get back some time, since it's been nearly 5 years.

Looks like I'll be out of the Crew loop for a while since I'll be in Colorado the next 2 weeks. Ya'll have fun!

Yeah! I reached to remove my contacts last night - DOH! Luckily I realized my mistake before I poked myself!

Pat: guilty, I took the week off, except Monday.

Brenda: we missed you. I could almost keep up this time! ;-)

Sandy pulled through for me again today. We had a wet basement (ugh) and I hauled away about 500 square feet of damp carpet and padding. All fit inside, hauled away, piece of cake.

Insurance covered it, thankfully, but this time can you say "Ceramic Tile"?

I'm quite lookin' forward to meeting my long lost brother from the West Coast (Ken was my first "friend" on Edmunds.com) tommorow, should be quite a meet. I've also been wanting to see Loosh play live for ages, and I finally get the chance. A couple of cold ones with my co-Crew Chiefs, does it get any better than that?

OK, maybe if we were all guest drivers for the Subaru WRC team, but let's be realistic folks! :-)

We've got an acre... pasture in the back yard could double as a campground for a weekend... wife will never know ;)
(actually, she's be first in line wanting to feed y'all...)
Seattle would be OK too... 'specially if the Mariners are in town.

Stephen: I was hoping you'd chime in! We could even meet in the middle somewhere, although Vantage does NOT have much appeal... maybe someplace up along the N Cascades Hwy... Birch Bay... Mt St. Helens.. the possibilities are endless! (my backyard has a certain appeal, too... no commute!)

    Cheers!

I realize that I'm a couple weeks behind, but just getting caught up on things. (I'd missed the recipies, too).

Mad Max and the sequesls have to be classics (early Mel Gibson). For those of you who didn't see any of the series, I'd call it Post Apocolypse Road Rage.

Another memorable one was an early Steven Spielberg flick. Name might have been Duel, but I'm not certain. A salesman driving an old beater (Chysler product, I think) passes a trucker and irriates him in the process. rest of the flick is a series of chase scenes as the motorist tries to avoid and escape from the evil trucker. Still on late night TV occasionally. Not sure if it was Spielberg's first or not, but definitely early.

Road trip coming up next week, so I'll have to be sure not to antagonize the truckers.
  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
    G'day

Mike's correct. Duel was an early Steven Speilberg film starring Dennis Hopper. The menace of the truck is the key ingredient here. I think the truck is a bigger player than Hopper.

Coming as the next big film after Easy Rider for Hopper, it was made for TV but given a cinema release in Europe soon after. I think it was released much later in the USA. I've always thought it was better as a late nighter, where it pops up regularly.

    Cheers

    Ed,

What's this about Italy? Are you going on vacation? I was there in the summer of 2000 (Venice, Rome, Assisi, Sienna, Florence, Milano) and just this past summer (Sicily). It's got to be one of my favorite places to travel.

If you go, RENT A CAR! Not for the big cities, but for travelling between them. Umbria and Tuscany are beautiful, easy to drive (the autostrada is very well done) and most importantly, it gets you to a lot more places that would take lots of time via bus/train.

Best gelato -- Giolitti's in Rome (a few blocks in from the Pantheon). I ate LOTS of gelato in Italy and this place wins hands down. I think my wife and I went there every day while in Rome.

Let me know if you need any suggestions.

    Ken
