Well, that explains one of the great movie mysteries I have laboured under - why Dennis Hopper looked remarkably different in Duel to Easy Rider. I have just come to the surprised discovery that I had the wrong Dennis. You know how it happens; one Dave mistaken for another...
Cheers
Graham
Did Mike Smith ever make it out? He was going to try to come later on.
Definitely great to meet Ken, finally! We've been friends (virtually) for 4 years, and we agreed that we won't wait another 4 years to meet again! :-)
Hypov and paisan: bummer you guys didn't make it, you really missed out!

I had been looking at Tire Rack and was about to order a set of Bridgestone Blizzack WS50's per their recommendation, but the Consumers article has me doing a total rethink. It looks like there may be some better, more balanced performers out there for not a lot more money. Anyone else look at it yet???
Question: Tire Rack shows some optional "Fox 2" alloy wheels as a snowtire package for the Outback for about $200 more than the steel wheel combo. They are 5 thin spokes - lots of open area. They look pretty nice in the picture - way better than putting ugly wheel covers on for 4 months. Anyone have experience with their wheels? Do large openings encourage or shed snow & ice buildup? Does their finish stand up to salt?
Steve
The steelies on my Forester would accumulate ice, but not after I waxed them. My alloys have had a fresh coat of wax from the start, they don't even stay wet for very long.
Nice thing about having 2 sets of wheels is you have plenty of time to take care of that, too.

Pat, Who knows, I might make a "Crew Tour d'Canada" someday and swing by your cabin.

WILL ISUZU GO VIRTUAL?
Reports in the Japanese media say Isuzu may dump its share of the joint-venture plant it shares with Subaru in Indiana, and become the first Japanese maker to field a lineup of SUVs for America without actually building them. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun daily says Isuzu is considering streamlining production of its SUVs at the Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc. plant in Lafayette, Ind., or selling off its share of the plant and contracting production of its vehicles to Subaru. Isuzu only confirms to Reuters that it is looking for ways to make production more efficient. Isuzu is due to replace the aged Trooper SUV with a version of the GM mid-size, long-wheelbase sport-utes by years end.

Looks like Isuzu is just getting insurance, so they can bail if the new pickup/SUV fails. Subaru would then just pickup the slack and add H6 or Baja production.

... and we crashed.
-Dave
Juice, Mike Smith and myself are familiar with several of the exact shooting locations. In fact, I believe one of the people killed, was very near the Fitzgerald Subaru (in White Flint/Rockville), that is often mentioned here at Edmunds. I think(?) it occurred across the street from the dealer.
Bob
Dave: Sorry to hear about the crash. Hope you guys are OK....
Steve
Bob: it was right behind Fitz Subaru, in the grassy area between the dealer and White Flint Mall. Very, very close to home.
Another was at the Shell in Kensington, where I grew up. It's a dry town, too - no alcohol, virtually no crime. Shame.
We used to own a lake house in Fredericksburg, and I shopped at Spotsylvania Mall every week, basically.
Scary how close to home it is. We're escorting our daughter right into her pre-school, and there are no outdoor activities.

I doubt the cat will be happy for long, though. I can't imagine that stuff wouldn't do long-term damage. That is, if the story isn't a hoax entirely.

I heard and read a bit about it before buying my subie... the other car I was considering was a diesel Jetta. I guess some people call them "french fry mobiles" because if your behind one it smells like McDonalds... in most areas its a 80/20 split so it doesn't freeze in the cold.

If you do a search at google on bio diesel you get lots of hits on the topic.
The guy in the article drove a Subie, but they didn't mention which model.

I rather like the idea of mean Welshmen running their cars on cooking oil. From my experience of the poverty in South Wales and the extreme efforts many would take to avoid paying taxes, it seems plasusible.
However, the Guardian report on the incident (see below) makes clear the matter is alleged to have happened at ASDA (a supermarket chain) in Llanelli (pronounced approximately as Clan-eth-lee).
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,807299,00.html
This also appears in the Western Mail http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0600uk/page.cfm?objectid=12265367&method=full&siteid=50082
The absence of coverage in other Welsh papers makes me very dubious. I wonder if the story has its genesis in a Fish and Chip shop in Llanelli called the Frying Squad (The Lower Trostre Road Llanelli SA15 2EA 01554 776400).
There is also no coverage on ASDA's press site http://www.asda.co.uk and nothing on the AA site http://www.aanewsroom.com/ nor HM Customs and Excise. Their site does however provide a hint for the story as there is a thriving criminal business in substituting cheap diesel meant for off road use into vehicles driven on road. There is a difference in tax rates which makes this attractive. http://www.hmce.gov.uk/news/nat-nr-7802.htm
Sadly, I think this might be a beat up in the great tradition of the British Journalistic trade.
Cheers

Hmm, isn't Patti supposed to do surgery this week? If so, we're thinking about you, Patti. Hang in there, I hope they relieve that back pain for ya. :-)

I remember being in Wales a few years back, and coming into some town that had the longest name in the world. I can't remember what it was, unfortunately. We have a picture somewhere of the train station, and the name went across the whole front of the station. I can't imagine trying to learn to spell that word. It had an interesting translation too, of which I also can't remember.
We spent a night in a castle (bread & breakfast) in Ruthin, and later took our laundry to a laundromat in a small hamlet called Mold (no kidding!).
Bob
No, I don't speak Welsh, I just found it on a web site :-)

Sweet, Steve, but I may have you beat. I'm now 20/30 L (was 20/40 with glasses) and 20/15 R (was 20/20 with glasses. 20/15 combined!
Plus, glare is down, less than with contacts. Peripheral vision is better than glasses, so overall I'm seeing better than either.

We saw a blue WRX sedan in the oncoming lane on a local road. He waved and I flashed my lights.
My step-daughter asked if I knew him. I said no. She said, you Subaru people are strange. :-D
