I'm here fairly often. I just don't post much because I don't feel I have anything significant to offer. The thing that bothers me most about my new home is that there are so many Subies of all years and models around here. I'm SO jealous!!! It gets especially bad when I go exploring up a promising forestry road and very quickly realize that my current transportation appliance won't take me AT ALL where the Forester would go with grace and ease. Life is full of compromises. I just got back from a two hour walk in Nymph Falls Park (8 km from home) where I was watching the salmon trying to jump the falls. Magnificent!! It sort of compensates for the loss of Rufus.

    Oil!? Interesting...

Points well taken. Even so, it would add one more brownie point to the list of Subie advantages. BTW, I want the 6-speed too... ;)

Yeah, I can't remember where I read that. The SOJ site doesn't really tout the self leveling suspension much anymore...

Hey all, just got back from Uwharrie, NC. Fun Off-road camping/cooking trip. Since the Trooper had the smack in the door, I opted to take the SVX for the ride down and back. Cruised like a charm turning 27mpg for most of the trip with speeds of 75-90mph with bursts of 110-120. On thurs night stopped in the town where the latest sniper shooting was on Sat night. Also on I95 just south of Balitmore wound up skooling a mid-90s Bubble Back Civic that was Fast and Furious. He came screaming past me so I followed him up to ~110-120 (at 3am) after about a mile or so we see sparks from his exhaust tips or somewhere under his car, and figure he hit the tips or the rims (there were rubber bands for tires) we also smelt somthing horrible, so we backed off and let him go. About 1 mile down we see him on the side of the road 4-ways on engine popped and smoke pouring out. Our best guess was he hit his nitrous too early or too late and the engine ate itself and ejected out the tailpipes!

Later that evening on I85 in VA was on a section where it's concrete, long and straight so I figured what the heck its 5am and no one is around lemme see what the SVX can do... Well I didn't learn about top speed but I learned the 120->60 with the metal master pads and SS lines and Slotted rotors is very QUICK. As we are tooling along I spot out of the corner of my eay a state trooper entering the highway on an onramp NEXT TO ME and I'm doing about 120. I stand on the brakes with both feet and bring it down to 60 to stay next to him. He followed me for about 3 miles and then turned off. The rest of the way to the NC border we did the 65mph limit.

The camping trip was great though, got to meet a ton of people from TN, Kentucky, VA, NC, SC. I brought down homemade Tomatoe Sauce and Sausage for Friday night, saturday we made steaks, Chicken, Pork loin, apple pie, all kinds of good stuff on the BBQ. Weather was perfect for camping, no bugs, crisp and cool.

Overall the SVX did excellent, I was a little worried cause it had never been on such a long trip ~1300 miles in 3 days. But it just kept trucking along. :)

I camped over the weekend also and tried out a couple new Dutch oven recipes. Weather was beautiful for it.

Also, and please understand as a mother of a soon-to-be 16-year-old boy I feel obligated to say this...SLOW DOWN, you're scaring me! ;-)

paisan, sounds like a good time.

We went to a wedding in the Catskills (Andes, NY). It was my first trip there and the roads are FUN! The scenery was gorgeous and the leaf colors are getting close to peak.

Didn't calculate my mpg's. Gas was over 20 cents more per gallon so I didn't fill up.

Paisan: that was a great story! Thanks for sharing. When I do 120 in my Quest, my mileage isn't nearly as good as yours. :-(

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Pat: yes, I got a 7/100 B2B, and here is why:

    * 7 years of roadside assistance means I save $497 by cancelling AAA
    * better resale value, we'll probably sell at 95k just to have that selling point
    * obviously, the warranty itself

I figure even if you never use it, you still almost break even when you factor resale ought to improve by a couple hundred bucks.

We spent $2500 in years 5-7 on the 626 (rated highly reliable, so what?), with mileage nowhere close to 100k.

Dennis: $700 is cheap, I've heard much higher prices for fixing those.

I still can't believe paisan used the word "opted" in a sentence, and properly! ;-)

Careful driving so fast, or they'll think you are the sniper! Sounds like a fun trip. Did you ride with TreeKillah once you got there?

I was changing diapers, patching dry wall, painting, caulking, raking leaves. But my 3 year old says I'm her best friend so that's okay.

Rode down in the K5 Blazer so we all hopped rided with other people. Funny thing is the guy with the K5 Blazer from Queens after we were down there we realized that we both went to the same HS and know some of the same people. Weird experience.

:) I actually slept on one of the trail rides. Cause I had been up all night Thurs night. It was fun sleeping while going over 3ft boulders.

You need to post more often if for no other reason than to keep the Canadian content up.

Make sure you keep that fishing line of yours away from the spawning salmon. ;-)

Glad you are enjoying the Island, now you just have to keep it a secret.

    Cheers,

No particular reason for calling out to you.
Just wanted to say "Hey Ross" :D
I'm quite subie-less at the moment and I could kinda relate.

Nothing gets by our Research Director, Bob. Yes, he mentioned it in the Future Models topic.

In fact I mentioned that it might be a good idea to make the H6 the only engine in the Outback, leave the H4 for the Legacy L and L/SE, and then turbo the 2.5 GT.

I'm looking to do the Players Run http://playersrun.com this year and they are about to accept the SVX in the entry list. Here is where I need help. I need to get sponsors for it since the entry is $7500. Anyone have any good ideas to get sponsors? Thanks in advance.

uh... what would a sponsor gain by supporting you? what do you have to offer?

the website didn't seem to have a great deal of information, but sounded like a rich man's game. or at least, someone richer than paisan. ;-)

He wants to spank some sense into those with more money than brains.

mike - you need to bleach your hair blonde and call yourself SubieGuy. Huge yellow vinyl stickers along the side of your SVX wouldn't hurt, either. ;-)

It's Basically a Cannonball Run type deal. They'd gain publicity, I believe it's written up each year in a bunch of National Magazines. I'd like to do the Gumball Rally 3000 also but that one is $12K to enter! The profits from the Players Run goes to charity which is cool, so it might actually be a tax writeoff for the sponsor.

    -mike
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
wow, I'm convinced. let me send you $15,000 and you can have a friend enter too.

    hehe

I guess snobs with BMW M3s have that cash laying around! ;);)

I believe that the charity is the Make a Wish Foundation for 2003.

Try SoA. After all, they've sponsored a Subaru owner's meet with Petter Solberg, SubieGal, and now they're sponsoring (or sponsored) an all Subaru auto-cross in Florida.

It's worth a shot, and the sponsored Jackie Chan in his Subaru Justy in the movie!

It's nice to be missed. Dave, I hope you don't remain in that horrible (Subieless) state for long. The pictures of the dead hero tugged at my old heart. I have an out of town guest this week and we'll be going back to wish the salmon well on their journey. If only I had Rufus, we could go in style.

Just got back from a nice lunch with Mike, Bob, and Frank, who was in DC to attend a conference. Had some good eats at El Chalan, which by the way turns out to be Peruvian, not Chilean, my bad.

Loosh would be proud, we experimented with some goat and shrimp, great food overall. The flan was good too.

Alas, no grilled turbot, but Frank was particularly fond of the Rally Bread. :-)

Good to see you guys. We gotta try to make this a regular thing, at least whenever an out-of-towner comes to DC.

    Mike,

Was Jackie Chan really in a Justy in the movie? I'll have to look more closely next time I see the movie.

I would have thought the movie pre-dated the Justy.

    Ah, food again...

As juice said, just got back from having lunch with him, Mike Smith—and finally got to meet Frank. Frank even put on his workin' clothes, just to meet us! :) And, I concur, we should do this whenever a long-distance Crew member is in the neighborhood.

Now, if they would only catch that sniper! It took me a good 20 minutes or so longer to get to Mike's house because of all the extra traffic caused by this morning's latest shooting...

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yep he drove a Justy in the 1st Cannonball Run, and a Mitsubishi in the 2nd one.

Glad to hear from you,and glad that life is treating you well, it would be nice to have your objective opinion on the boards again.

Just because you no longer have Rufus does not mean you cannot chip in anytime.

    Cheers Pat.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Oh yeah, Frank came in uniform. It was pretty cool to see him again.

Anyone else who visits from out of town (despite the sniper), let us know.

Speaking of food (and wine). Sorry I haven't been around in a while. I've been on an extended business trip to Pari! I even got to go to the Pairs Auto show last week and view cars from the other side of the pond. Of course, I spent the most time looking at the WRX Sti and Turbo Forester (sorry Juice). The Forester was cut in half so I can see all the workings. Really great. Took pictures and will try to post (as soon as I find a photo place that speaks Anglais).

Does the new restyled Impreza look as good in person as it does in the pixs?

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Now WHY would they tear a perfectly good Forester in half like that? Next time, just send it to my house! ;-)

They had a cutaway at the NY Auto Show too, but it was an XS 2.5l.

How cool to visit the Paris show, heck, just Paris, even.

Does the Enzo look as cartoonish live as it does in photos?

Actually Jeannie here at Edmunds put me in touch with them.

They were looking for "import buyers" how were not wooed by 0% financing and the big rebates the domestics offered.

Generally, I said that we look at quality and reliability first. Though there are a few domestics that meet that requirement, most are from Japan.

Price is one issue, but if they're offering huge rebates, resale erodes badly. A 2 year old Taurus, from the Budget rental fleet, goes for $10-12 grand. A similar Outback goes for $16-20 grand. Easy pick, especially when they cost the same new.

Finally, my third point was that any "Buy American" sentiment is completely not applicable. First, I'm not even American. I want the local economy to do well, but it has to succeed on merit, not pity. I will put my hard earned dollars on the product that offers the best balance of value, reliability, and fun.

So of course we bought a Subie. :-)

Then I brought up the whole globalization of the industry, is a Dodge Intrepid an american car, when it's made in Canada and German owned?

What about the Volvo V40, which is Swedish, but really american (Ford), but really made in the Netherlands, but actually assembled by a Japanese company (Mitsu), which in turn is owned by Chrysler (american), which is actually German (DCX)?

I think she'll get a couple of cool quotes from all my ramblings.

I have the best of both worlds ... I have the Subaru Outback which is assembled by AMERICAN workers in the plant about 45 miles from me ...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
...and GM is their biggest share holder.

    But you really bought local.

I think the only plant in MD was the plant that used to build GM vans in Baltimore, but I think even that closed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

Well spent the day in hospital unexpectedly, I got a piece of meat stuck in my (esophagus, Probably spelt wrong) at 5Pm last night took until 4-30pm today to get it removed.

I had to have a gastroscopy in order to move it, as well, since they had to have me asleep for the procedure, they decided to expand my esophagus as they deemed it was too tight from the surgery I had two years ago to cure acid reflux, I have had a number of scary moments with food jamming but last night was the worst.

My stomach feels at the moment as though I have gone 15 rounds with Lennox Lewis.

    Cheers Pat.
