Good for her. I can't wait to get back on my bike. Believe it or not a lot of sidewalks and some trails around here still have left over piles of snow!

We got a dusting this morning, too. Hope that's it for the season.

Bay Area gas prices really are skyrocketing. I think our average regular price is around $2.10/gallon now. That's factoring in some of the cheapo no-name brands. Ouch!

It really is great to have you back!! Try not to leave us again. I may even post again from time to time. We did get 8" of snow on Sunday here in the Comox Valley, but without a Soobie it wasn't much fun. It was all gone by Monday anyway. I've discovered the meaning of being semi-unretired: twice the work, 1/6 the pay. Still, the work is useful and occasionally rewarding. I am exhausted much of the time though.

If you want to see piles of snow come here, we have about 5 feet in the back yard, and all around our little complex the snow has been pushed into piles at least 12 to 15 feet high.

We are still not half way through March yet and winter does not usually leave these parts until mid April at least.

     Cheers Pat.

I thought we still have a lot of snow. Piles about 5 to 6 feet (~2 meters)at my driveway. No grass to be seen. Maybe in July.

I am looking at getting a bike myself. Guys at work mountain bike during lunch. Plus there is a new bike trail being built right by my house. The trail will soon be connected through 3 counties and into Connecticut. Plus my daughter loves to bike - good incentive.

Welcome back! Glad to hear you're doing better.

As for new product ideas... I guess you could check out my rant over in the Future Vehicles discussion. ;-)

of my children! Funny - I thought they loved our little chats!

I'm not working full time yet, so I'm still getting caught up. As pricing is released for all of our new models I'll post it. I'm sure Edmunds will be on top of the announcements too!

Juice - thanks for tryihng to keep me in the loop while I was "down and out"!

Ross - That doesn't sound like a restful retirement! At least you know how much you are needed in this world.

Great news on Marianne, Don! We're all pulling for her. She must be really strong to go on a ride while she's fighting so hard.

Ian - I'll get to Future Models soon. So much to read - - - so little time!!

it's kind of like a race. If I take too long typing a response, they system loses the link to the page. I have to read fast and respond quickly on memory. Sorry if I missed anyone. I am reading the post! Responding is a different bailiwick!

    Patti-
sounds like an idle issue. It may be set to auto disconnect on a timed idle basis. Might need to deactivate that feature. Losing previous pages could be storage of history.
Hope the IT people know what I'm talking about. :)

If I get laid off I think I need to come work at SOA in the computer dept! Seems like they've got some issues going on. At least it's not like the GM Computer issues they have in their Trailblazer/Envoys that require you to reboot the car in the middle of driving it! :)

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I think this will be very helpful for Patti and anyone else from SOA who may be lurking.

Now the "Future Models" forum can be used for mainly posting "news" regarding upcoming Subarus, and this "Suggestion" forum will be allocated to our suggestions, wants and desires. I think this is good. :)

Wow, Pat, our snow is melting away, just about a foot left from the really big piles I had shoveled.

Bit: thanks for the help, I have a game plan now for that soffit. Won't work on it 'til next weekend at least, though.

I still think we need a thread that has important info that keeps coming up, like torque specs, wheel sizes, web sites, etc. A kind of Subaru Crew manual. We should also condense some of the other threads to keep it manageable.

    Greg
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Greg I've been thinking of doing a site similar to my Isuzu one that would have references like that. Lemme see what webnames are available.

    -mike
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    Greg-
I think a thread with such info should be established at the official SoA site, my.subaru.com as an example, and linked there from Subaru Crew here at Edmunds. I do agree that the info will be beneficial, however, it may suffer some credibility since it's not a Subaru doctrine.

    -Dave
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
yes maybe. But, Subaru will not likely publish things like the fix for MT shudder, Forester wheel bearing, ECU reprogram, etc. Since we keep answering these same questions over and over here, why not have a thread here? This way we can spend more time drooling over the B11S.

    Greg
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
O..K.. since you put it that way [more time to drool over B11S ;-) ], then this thread ought to be a closed thread. Only to be updated whenever new questions and or answers surfaces. Otherwise, it'll still be "the same questions asked over and over. So, who's going to compile and update the thread? :D

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I'm just gonna build a site. If you want e-mail me your Q&As and I'll get em up.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think those things fall under General Maintenance & Repair. That topic isn't *too* active, it's easy to keep up.

If anything, there are two "Problems" topics that are redundant, those could be combined.

I like mike's idea of putting general specs/tips up on a certain web site, maybe in an FAQ format.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
That's what I'm gonna do juice, I'm gonna setup a FAQ section and complile all the tidbits before I forget them... :)

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We need an entire RTFM section for anything already covered in the manual, LOL.

I realize that I'll late to this particular party... it's easy to fall behind on Subaru boards. You guys are SO active. I can miss a month on the Toyota Tacoma boards and get caught up in 5 minutes.

Anyway... Juice you talked about replacing your porch soffet with "OSB plywood", but that's a contradiction in terms. OSB (oriented strand board) is not plywood. It's a panel made from flakes (strands) of wood and glue. Plywood is made from "plys" of veneer.

I'm not just being picky here. I work in the wood products industry and the two products are quite different, each having its own advantages and disadvantages.

OSB is more uniform, denser, and less expensive. Plywood is more water resistant, lighter for a given strength, and has knots and occasional voids and splits.

For your application, I would have chosen plywood (especially if you plan to cover it with vinyl soffet material). If you actually used OSB rather than plywood, I would recommend venting the space well to minimize the chance of moisture problems.

    Just my 2 cents.

And WOW, you were quick on fixing the damage. Lots of people (myself included) would put it off until the weather warms up.

I am fascinated by engineered wood and lumber products. I worked as a carpenter my summers off during high school ( about 15-20 years ago), and all we had back then was regular lumber and plywood. When we built our new house in 2001, they made extensive use of engineered lumber -- all kinds of laminated beams, I-beam floor joists, different types of OSB, etc... Really cool to see all that stuff. It has really revolutionized homebuilding, and the engineered lumber seems so much more stable over time.

    Mike k

    LOL Ken!

james: actually, what I got is a combination of the two. Looks like two plys of wood and a veneer of OSB on the outer layer, primed, and intended for exterior use. Indeed it's smooth and ready for paint or whatever.

Now I gotta get those pix up.

The stuff is *expensive* though. $24 a pop for a 4'x8' sheet, 3/8" thick. The other option for exterior use was plain old plywood but with a textured outer layer for $15, but it didn't come primed. At the time I thought I was going to paint so I decided to spend the extra $45 (for 5 sheets) and get the pre-primed stuff.

I guess if I had known I was gonna use vinyl soffit all along, I could have just used cheaper pressure treated plywood. Oh well. Insurance gave me $335 after my deductible and I think I'll just about break even so I'm happy.

We did get a little warm up last weekend. Today is nice too.

I need gas for Sandy and passed about 7 gas stations on the way to work today - cheapest one was $1.839! Ouch.

for regular at the Gulf station I use. That seems about average here in central NJ right now. (It was $1.299 on January 22.) Ouch!

  • oregonboyoregonboy Member Posts: 1,650
I paid $1.99 for regular at a Chevron station at Rice Hill (on I-5 in mid-Oregon). I thought that maybe prices had made another big jump, but it turns out that they were just expensive, probably due to their relatively remote location. Most stations on I-5 in Oregon are $1.83 - 1.85.

It will get worse before it gets better.

  • oregonboyoregonboy Member Posts: 1,650
    Craig -

I agree about engineered wood... definitely the way of the future. Second-growth trees are not suitable for large, solid dimensional lumber. Wood I-beams are lighter, stronger, and consistently straight.

I work for a veneer manufacturer and a large portion of our production goes to Roseburg's "EWP" (Engineered Wood Products) Plant.

$1.89, $1.99 for regular? You guys are lightweights. Northern California has been well into the $2/gallon territory now for weeks. :-(

Hi My name is Tracy. I'm a Mom of two and know very little about cars. If you have questions on software or knitting I can probably help. So I'm posting here hoping I can get some questions answered so I can be more knowledgeable about my 99 Forester L.

    Thanks
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hi and welcome, you came to the right place! :-)

We have a lot in common. I also have a Forester L and two kids.

We'd be glad to help out with whatever issues/questions you have, it's why we're here. Personally, I've developed some close friendships, people I've known now for over 4 years, via Edmunds.com.

Stick around, you never know when a knitting question will come up! Or just stay and chat with us. If you feel up to it, we host a live chat tonight at 9pm EST, follow the link on the left column above.

Me good wife is running me ragged, we have friends coming from Ireland for a visit at the end of May.

Now a house that was perfectly comfortable before is now suddenly not fit for the pigs, so all manners of touching up and painting are the order of the day.

      Cheers Pat.

Our price just went up to 91.9 cents Canadian for one litre of regular gas. According to the media, Victoria, B.C. now has the highest gas prices in Canada. I wonder if we are the highest in North America?

Using my conversion calulator, that is $3.48 Canadian per U.S. gallon or at today's exchange rate, $2.32 American for one U.S. gallon

    <rant off>...thanks for listening.

    Cheers,

you should come up to Courtenay. Gas here is "only" $.899 per litre.

    Ross
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
And I thought we were bad off in Ottawa @84.9cents a litre, but did'nt your alcohol loving Premier just tack on another 5 cents a litre gas tax for transportation.

Never mind that the origional purpose of taxes on gas was for transportation but has been used for everything but.

How much of this 5 cent grab do you think will actually go to the stated purpose.

     Cheers Pat.

like the G.S.T. was going to reduce our National debt? Anyway, just glad I am driving a Sub and not some gas guzzling SUV.

Ross, O.K. so your gas is cheaper in Courtenay, but now tell us about that 1 1/2 inches of rain you got today. ;-)

Come on guys, you need to come to San Diego for the worst prices. Seems we enjoy the position of having the highest prices in the nation. Don't know why, although there are all kinds of conspiracy theories available - take your pick.

But regular at 2.10 is common, I pay 2.36 for premium. Last night on the news they showed a lone station advertising 3.19 for regular, 4.29 for premium, but looks like the owner is making a statement rather than making a serious pricing decision. Whatever, his station is mighty empty right now. Here is link to local TV station http://www.kfmb.com/topstory14293.html

    All for now,

Makes our $1.79 stuff seem downright cheap (never mind that we saw $1.299 around Thanksgiving).

Tracy: Always questions on software, rarely on knitting!! My wife is heavily into embroidery (digitized sewing machines).

Well I'm not looking forward to $3 to $4 a gallon but I did read yesterday that the sales of full sized SUVs are finally slipping. Sales of small sport utes are moving up though. Looks like Honda (Element, CRV), Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester are the winners.

I wonder if we would be better off with high gas price coupled with lack of income tax? That's the European way and that is the way it's done in Montana. They had $1.60 when Wyoming had $1.00 6 years ago. No sales tax though. Is is more or less fair than income tax? Don't know but it would encourgage fuel conservation. Of course like high cigarette taxes designed to discourge consumption, if the idea works the tax revenue bombs. I see two sides here.

    juice,

Here's a mothering phenomenon for you. The first kid gets tons of pictures, scrap books and all types of mementos. The second gets a bunch, but with not quite the enthusiasm as was given the first. The poor third child? He practically has to take his own photos of himself! OK, so maybe I exagerated a LITTLE, but just wait and see!
