So slow on the boards today? is everyone on Vacation?

      Cheers Pat.

I've been extremely busy at work lately. We had enough work for 3, and had a requisition open.

Then management fires my partner, and suddenly that work of 3 falls on one. I'm doing more than surviving though, I'm kicking much butt. And help arrives next week.

Yes. We have a mandatory shutdown this week to save $$. Just before a major layoff in 2 weeks. Scary time.

Good to hear things are moving along. Hang in there Patti.

Is your job at risk? hopefully not, but what you said is so true scary times indeed, it seems to me no matter the job on both sides of the border workers are so stressed.

It seems that every sector of the workforce is expected to get leaner and meaner, do more with less,ETC.ETC.

Unfortunately a lot of what is happening, is, and was motivated by pure greed by a select few idiots at the top of the food chain who could see no end in sight for the gravy train.

CEOs were drawing exorbitant salarys even as the company they were heading up was going in the crapper.

"CEOs were drawing exorbitant salaries even as the company they were heading up was going in the crapper."

Pat- Quite coincidentally, yesterday's paper had an article about how Delta Airlines just paid out $17 mil in bonuses to its executives and set aside another $25 mil to guarantee executive pensions in case Delta has to file for bankruptcy. In the meantime, Delta lost a record $1.4 bil last year, has been laying off thousands of workers and has gone to congress almost demanding a multi-billion dollar government bailout to keep them in business!

Pat's right, the ownership of that Outback should be revoked! There is no way that person's name is Dave. ;-)

I was off yesterday, for some spring cleaning and then to take the wife out for her B-day. Also missed the chat, sorry 'bout that. How was it? I'll be sure to make it next week.

Those CEOs should be forced to pay back their previous year's salary for such poor performances.

  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
That article just reinforces what I said, the exact same thing is happening with Air Canada at the minute, who, incidently have been bailed out repeatedly by our government over the years.

We have Ministers at the minute suggesting another handout.

      Cheers Pat.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
The CEOs. should be made to hand back their salarys I agree, but then they should be handed pink slips, some of them should do jail time IMHO.

The former CEO of Nortel comes to mind he was handing out rosy predictions even as Nortel was heading into the basement.

Unfortunately a lot of people lost their shirts because they still believed the reports that were being put out.

      Cheers Pat.

The 3/31 issue of Autoweek Fast Poll featured none other than Bob, bat and juice. 3 crew reponses out of 7 published responses, not bad!

    "The B11S is the long-awaited neo-SVX. No to the A:Level Volga V12 coupe. It's too 1958." - Bob

"In the "Should Be Made" category, put hte B11S: Nice design, sporty and great. In the trash: Volga V12" - bat

"The B11S would give Subaru a new design direction, as well as a halo car. So what if it's a little derivative of some Alfas, it's gorgeous." - juice

    Another positive for the B11S:
"The Subaru B11S is by far the best concept shown. Subaru, build it, without changing the design, and price it under $35,000. I'll buy one." - Chris Barnett (a crew or NASIOC member?)

I haven't gotten my issue in the mail yet, but that's great news!

As to NASIOC: I did post similar AW Fast Poll info over there (as I did here), suggesting they vote too.

BTW, they edited (re-worded) my response a little, but that's OK. Also, Dave I'm going to re-post your response over at nasioc, as I had also suggested that they too send in their vote a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, rumor is that the layoffs will be on April 10. I am very worried. The semiconductor industry is shrinking fast as they overexpanded during 2000. This will be the third layoff in 9 months or so. We went from 22000 employees to 14000 in 2 years. Now, 2000 more are going to get downsized.

    Praying in NY

Positive people and peak performers find their way in all situations.

The times I've lost my job I found something far far better in short order. Of course, I'm young and have a very flexible lifestyle... but I believe He will show you the way.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Three of us! Sweet, that issue is a keeper.

Hopefully that'll bring more attention to the concept. I thought Autoweek sort of brushed it aside, didn't make any real special mention of it. Now that it got 4/7 votes overall, I think they will realize they sort of overlooked it.

Hang in there Greg, fingers crossed for you. But Colin is right, I ended up better off.

My little girl, age 15 yet senior in high school, got admitted to UC Berkeley, Engineering school, with declared major of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science!!!

For those into college rankings, UCB Computer Science program is 4th in the US, after 3 private heavyweights: MIT, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon. It's a very competitive school, and hard to get into, in other words.

UC Berkeley was the only school she applied to. With her being only 15, we could not let her live in the college dorms, so she had to find something close to home, and Berkeley is within reach of public transportation.

If she was in driving age, a new Subaru of her choice would be waiting for her on a driveway... maybe.

GO BEARS GO BEARS GO BEARS

PS Berkeley's colors are blue and yellow -- exactly the same hues as Subaru's

    Kate,

Congrats to you and your daughter! She must be very smart. One girl in my graduating class ten years ago was 16...

Regarding the majors-- that seems just a bit odd to me. Here at Wichita State (an OK engineering school, especially aerospace with the local aircraft biz influence) they offer Computer Engineering which probably would be the amalgam that your daughter is striving for.

    -Colin
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
She's much more into CS than EE, but that major was the only choice in the Engineering school that included CS. AFAIK, she can later choose more specialized CS program and have fewer classes of EE.

PS Of course, I would have sent her to Wichita, if you would have agreed to "wait for her" :-) :-) remember our discussion a couple months ago?
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
What an accomplishment! My congrats to your daughter and the proud parents.

BTW, I recall back a few years ago that Cal's football teams wore a "bear paw" logo on their helmets that looked not unlike the Subaru World Rally Team's logo - minus the six stars, of course.

Best of luck to your daughter!

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Congratulations. It's a great accomplishment for her, no doubt, but also for the parents that raised her.

I remember opening my acceptance letter from MD very fondly.

EE is tough and so is CS, so she'll need continued support and motivation.

You're in the Crew family so we had already assumed she had smart genes. ;-)

Congrats Kate to you and your daughter!

    Greg,
Hang in there, hope everything works out okay. My wife finds out April 9th who stays, who has to go to Charlotte,NC and who is let go. Since we decided to stay in the NY area, that leaves her 2 options. Seems like this is happening all over, in every industry.

    Mark

PS- That was the 1st time I have ever been quoted, and in such estemmed company!
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    And Greg...
should the dreadful axe falls. But I pray it won't.
Treat it as a vacation. You'll think and plan better when you're enjoying the time off.

    Mark (bat1161)-
Praying for good happenings for your wife and you too. :)

    Kate-
Congratulations. Your daughter makes any mother proud, but none more than she has made you proud. :D

Greg -- I know EXACTLY what you're going through. Our company is going through it's announced layoffs. Our division just lost 10% of our workforce last week. It was extremely painful to learn that some of my friends would be leaving. I sure hope we're at the end of this semiconductor downcycle.

Kate -- Congrats and GO BEARS! You should be extremely proud to have your daughter get into Cal. Cal's engineering is top-notch. I'm really happy for you as a Cal alumnus (B-school, though). There's nothing quite like getting a first-rate education and have the benefit of it being a public university. A lot of my close friends went to Cal engineering undergrad, albeit many years ago. Let me know if you have any questions.

Greg: Yep - hearing the same dreadful story from several of our on-site service suppliers. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Kate: Congrats! My degree from Clarkson is from the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering. 20 years ago you began to specialize beginning of Junior year.

Having come from Stuyvesant HS I love to see other smart kids out there. I'd actually caution her to take some time off before jumping into school. I personally feel that maturity is something that you can't rush, and by going to school that early it might hurt her in the long run. Just a thought. Either way congrats!

You can always take 5 years to graduate, or try a foreign exchange program, or volunteer somewhere.

The latter two are more desirable among World Bank applicants than a PhD.

    Kate,

ahhh yes I do remember that discussion. you haven't even seen pictures of me! (I don't think, at least...)

although I am ashamed to admit, perhaps I look a bit young for my 27 years. I was talking with a girl in a restaurant about 2 weeks ago and asked her out... she said sure, asked how old I was. I said "27, why?"

    "well, I'm only 16."

Guess I'll see if your daughter likes older guys in 3.5 years after she blows through undergrad. ;-)

I thin I saw your pictures on this forum (unless it was a stand-in), you do look younger than 27. Especially in the motorcycle helmet :-)

Paisan: I agree with you regarding maturity. It's a big concern of mine. But so far she did not disappoint me. Will see how it goes.
All this said, I would not let my boy to jump the grades. Let him play with his toy trucks and coloring books as long as he wants!

Thanks guys for sharing my joy! One more nerd has joined the Berkeley crowd :-)

PS Cannot wait to get that Autoweek, to see our very own Crew trio published in the same issue.

    G'day

Well, Kate. I'd break out the bubbles to celebrat (well perhaps not to drink with her). That is sure some accomplishment.

Whenever our kids succeed with something, we make very sure that we polish their halo and celebrate. Its great for them and good fun for the family.

Tell what a clever kid she is

    Cheers

I'll have to ask my sister how old she was when she started at MD (though it ain't Berkeley!), but I think she was 15 or 16 (no driver's license yet). She's studying Biologial Resources Engineering.

There were some growing pains, but her GPA is good and she's adjusting well. Having responsible and "book worm" friends in college helped her.

Kate, congratulations to your daughter for her achievement. It is indeed wonderful that she can remain at home yet attend such a prestigious university. I'm sure she worked very hard for that result.

Someone above mentioned her going slow and taking 5 years to complete her degree. I believe that many UC degrees now require 5 years, at least many, many, students are taking 5 years to complete. It's a lot of work. Very competitive also.

when I started out in the fall of 1993 as an electrical engineer with a full ride to WSU (Wallace scholarship-- savior of Cessna in the 60s...) I believe it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 124 credit hours to graduate.

that's a solid 5 years at your basic 12 hours per semester. Kate's daughter will no doubt go in with all sorts of Advanced Placement credit, as did I ;-), and probably will take 15-18 hours per semester... seems to be the fashion among the very bright and industrious I've met.

    Happy Birthday Pat!

Kate, congrats to you and your daughter. But I can't root for the Bears as my daughter is a Trojan (USC). (She actually finishes her first year in college before she graduates this June!) Where do these high achieving kids come from???

Actually, I was once one of those. I left high school in my senior year (1965) to go to University. (My father had graduated 2nd in his class at 16!!) I was already in my second year when my class mates started their first semester. I graduated at 20 after goofing off (I could have finished at 19). I sometimes wonder if I might not have been better off in other regards if I had followed the more conventional path. A basic imponderable, I fear.

When I think back, I wish I would have taken my grades a bit more seriously. Instead, I got on the honor roll a couple of times in high school and figured I'd coast into college. WRONG! Tempted by the 'freedom' college life brings, my GPA plummeted in the first year. From the honor roll to Academic Probation. :(

I was able to clean up my act, retaking courses, taking extras, changing to the '6 year' plan, etc. When it came to my major (IS/IT), I made my self proud by getting a 4.0 in the entire core. Managed to graduate with a 3.0 overall. If I had taken a year off, I just may have avoided that embarassing first year.

The moral of my story: sometimes a little failure is needed to succeed.

Kate, congratulate your daughter on her achievements! I wish her only the best in her future endeavors.
