2'+ predicted for NYC! I'm amped. Not only do I have the Trooper, but I also have my XT6 to play with! :)

Well I auto-xed the XT6 today in camden. First Auto-x after the suspension conversion. Let's say there is a night and day difference! I believe I placed about 10-15th in G-Stock class of a field of 30-40 GSers. Not bad for a 13yo car that has cost me a total (with repairs and initial cost) of <$2500. :) It was also nice to drive to philly and back on about $12 of premium gas, with the trooper it would have been $20 of regular!

Now I can't wait to get my Yokohama AVS Intermediates for the XT6!

I was just reading in the UK car rag, CAR, that somewhere in northern Australia, you folks don't have any speed limits! :)

How did you guys luck out? It must be a secret. Opps(!), not anymore. Sorry. >-)

    G'day.

In the Northern Territory there are no speed restrictions. However, the Northern Territory is very sparsely populated with few bitumen roads as most of it is very serious desert or jungle. Attitudes to road legislation are much more relaxed than in the rest of the country.

Most NT roads are gravel or dirt and there is the added road hazard of 4 trailer road trains carrying goods to outlying settlements.

I am hard pressed to think of an American state that is quite as red-necked as the Northern Territory; somewhere Deep-South with a hangover of attitudes that slavery is a good idea. The majority of the population are Koori (aboriginal) with the horrendous social problems which come from institutionalized poverty. Glue and petrol sniffing are rife and to support the habit, many youths indulge in petty crime. This is complicated by different value systems and systems of tribal laws applying to Koori which inevitably brings them into conflict with white values and laws.

The Northern Territory government operates a criminal system of "Three strikes and you're out" requiring compulsory imprisonment for a third offence. This means that a child may be jaied for something like stealing a packet of biscuits (don't laugh, I am deadly serious about the packet of biscuits), bringing them into the jail system far from their home and tribal support system. It's no surprise that many Koori youth suicide in jail and the Northern Territory government have been repeatedly criticized by various United Nations agencies. Australians generally are not proud of their NT compatriots.

The down side of the relaxed attitude to driving is the worst road toll figures in Australia and, by Australian standards, positively lethal drivers. Given that they also have an extremely relaxed attitude to drink driving, it's not a safe place to be. Mind you, if you are white and drunk, you could do worse. It's not like it's a crime which could get you on the three strikes basis.

    Not so cheers

    yikes.

NOAA is back-pedaling on snow predictions this morning....I fear this may be another "much ado about nothing" for MD, much like New Year's..

I hear only 4-6" here in NYC. :(

hammersley Mar 3, 2001 9:19am Paul, I've been fueling the 93 Civic and 00 GT at Costco for two years (?) but we only drive 6,000 mi/year in each vehicle so I have little real data to share. Neither knocks or hesitates on acceleration. What other performance symptoms would one expect with low quality fuel?

After extended use of say, slightly below or below average quality fuel (exhibits no obvious performance problems like knocking or hesitation), what symptoms would one expect? Fuel injectors would clog; what else? How long before a diet of slightly below average quality or poor quality fuel before I'd see problems?

I recall Consumer Reports indicating petrol is a fungible but thats just one opinion. Hmm, I hope a response from Colin is imminent. :D

FWIW I add Chevron Techron every 3-6 months (I'm inconsistent, spank me) in both.

Do you have one of these (decals), or would it be frowned upon at your place of work? ;-) I put mine on a while ago...Yes, I know, the van needs a rear deflector too! :-)

Well no snow. After all that hysteria. Downright irresponsible, if you ask me. Local news has nothing better to do than whip up all this anxiety in folks when the system is way too far away to accurately call. Predictions were so dire that some school systems announced closings YESTERDAY. And today? rain. Actually, it isn't even raining.

Have fun Paisan! at least you are likely to get whupped.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
They *NEVER* close. I'm pretty suprised. Unfortunately, Wall Street never closes, so I am sitting here at work instead of playing in the 1" of ice we have... Hopefully we'll get some real snow tonight.

    Hi folks,

Well don't know if any of you remember that I am moving to London, UK -- so I have to sell my 2000 Outback.

It's located in Waterloo, ON, Canada. Base model OB, 5sp, Timberline Green, tinted windows, (minidisc player and amp optional), alarm. 38,000 KM = 23,750 miles. Asking $27,500. It's available for delivery after March 16th.

This car has never been through a car-wash, it has been hand-washed and waxed almost every month it has been owned. No scratches or dents. Full service records. Immaculate condition.

If you know anyone who may be interested, my email is ash@sarofax.com.

    Thanks,

    Ash

We got a few inches yesterday. Considering that's all we had, the amount of highway carnage is incredible. Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon I went to meet a friend for dinner, foolishly as it turned out. On the 20 mile drive over to our meeting place I passed at least 10 places where skid marks led off the road, plus I came upon two accidents where cars had failed to turn and gone straight into something non-road and nasty. It wasn't much snow, but it was wet and thick and it made the roads into skating rinks. Salt trucks made very little difference as the stuff was mostly water already. Slowing down helped, a little, but it was still nasty. I personally had half a dozen scary moments where the slush took control of the front end of my Subie, most of them occurring while I was driving straight ahead. Each time, as I gingerly coaxed the car back under control and prayed that I would be able to do so before hitting something, I was thinking to myself, "my kingdom for a set of winter tires!"

Overnight we got a couple of inches of frozen rain, and now it is snowing again. The low pressure system behind this mess is huge, and it is still out there. Anyone living on the US east coast north of the Carolinas should continue to take this storm seriously IMO. Be safe, people!

    Regards,

I've used Costco gas a couple of times and never noticed any difference. It's fine to me, even the 87 octane.

Paisan: good to hear you're wringing out the XT6 a little.

What snow? Zero accumulation. Visibility is down, but that's it. My Miata would have made it to work on time.

Speaking of Blanca, looks like the guys working on Kate's Forester are free-lancing here in the east. What a sloppy job. Awful. Paint overspray, spots on the top, loose plastic trim, and they forgot to replace the wheel's center cap, which was scratched (even though I specifically mentioned it to them).

To make things worse, when they tried to fix the trim it broke, and get this - they glued it back together! Yeah, right, guys.

After a few no-so-kind words with the manager, he agreed to clean it up, buy a new plastic trim piece to replace the one they broke, and get a new center cap for the wheel. I simply did not accept their poor work and left it with them.

Sorry to vent. It's just so disappointing.

    Hey Juice...

Sorry to hear about the miata problems. But didn't we mention this *before* you brought it in? Well anyone in the northeast that needs a good body shop I know a great one in SI, excellent work, although it might be a trip for some of you :)

I just realized that not 1 toyota celica beat my XT6 @ the Auto-x, and they all had 5/6 speed MTs. Amazing, I figured they'd beat my pants off.

You guys did warn me, but that's what prepared me to give it a good once-over, and catching their mistakes.

At least the body panels are straight, with good, tight tolerances. The paint looks good, too. No orange peel, surprisingly good color match for an 8 year old car.

It's just some of the details they seemed to rush. I told them to take their time - I'm in no rush at all. We'll see how it looks on Thursday when I go in again.

    -juice

PS Celicas have no torque. It would take a skilled driver to keep the engine in the power band. Your XT6 is far more flexible, not to take anything away from your driving...
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well they should be able to just leave it in 2nd gear and crank it up aroun 9K rpms which is where they are most torqueie. I was just suprised that the XT6 did as well as it did. Can't wait to get the Yokohama tires on it, that should help things out a bit.

Like Paisan said, they are predicting up to 18" in the city. The roads weren't too bad this morning, but the worst is yet to come. It's supposed to get real bad this afternoon and evening. My company is so scared that they are putting us up in hotels in the city for the next 2 nights.
Everyone : stay safe and watch for the lunatics doing 60-70 in the snow and ice.

wow... and I thought I'm the only one unlucky one out here.
BTW, my poor Forester celebrates exactly 3 months in the shop to date. To start off my morning, I've faxed very angry letters to the shop owner and to my insurance. I'm lobbying to take this shop off the list of approved facilities by State Farm and AAA.

Here's a thought. The place I went is to is called "Auto Body Dimensions".

Maybe it should read "Dimentia" instead.

  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Glad you were savvy enough to catch the sloppy work, it would seem that good body shops are few and far between, I think they play on the fact that most people do not know enough to put up a fuss and then a lot of people accept sloppy work even though they are pissed about it, I don;t how you would go about it but the answer is for zero tolerance for bad work and to spread the news of good and bad shops equally I think it would be a good idea if everyone who uses these boards knows of a good bodyshop in their area then hopefully there is some way we could compile a list of where to go. I will kick off with 2 shops in the Ottawa area. European auto care Bentley Ave. Nepean. and Honda Collision Centre Leitrim Road.
    Cheers Pat.

Maybe they just rushed mine. They figured it's 8 years old and all.

They had a fully customized PT Cruiser on the lot which looked really nice. Lots of custom body work and paint, inside and out. It was very clean - even the detail work.

That's what I was hoping for. Guess their profit margins on custom work is better than working with insurance companies.

If there is an acceptance of my suggestion to list repair facilities any easy to compile a list.

Juice, you bet the margins are a lot better, most insurance companies beat the profit way down.

Could you do me a favor in your travels through SOA and find out if the XT6 has a rear LSD, and if so what type (viscous, or mechanical) I'm trying to move my XT6 to a different class for auto-x but I need to know if it has a rear mechanical LSD. '88 XT6, 4wd, 4EAT. Thanks.

in response to some of the emails about the 27,500 price on my 2000 OB. No, that it is not in US dollars! It's CDN, which comes out to 17,800.

No, I was actually referring to the "Subaru Crew" link on the Owner's Club page. You know, from the main Edmunds Home Page to "Town Hall Community", to "Owner's Clubs"

Before noon today, "Subaru Crew (2 folders, 9 discussions)" was not included. It was (accidentally?) dropped sometime last week.

    It is back now, however...

    Thanks,

Today I got to really check out my '99 Forester's ability in deep snow. We got about 2 feet here in Eastern Upstate New York from the 2-day Nor'easter. While the roads were kept plowed, I found a student parking lot at a nearby college which hadn't been plowed since yesterday. The Forester (with winter tires) had no trouble cruising through 16"+ of rutted powder mixed with the more packed snow left by the yesterday's plowing. It was fun seeing snow blowing over the hood!

    Karen,

I sent several messages inquiring about the missing Subaru Crew beginning last Thursday.

The response was -we can not really tell you what is wrong with your browser.

I had deleted history, etc. and tried it on another unrelated machine.

I can only guess that when your folks checked my inquiry that the were getting a reload from browser history.

As of yesterday am things were back to normal.

    Thanks for checking.

Ok, NY/NJ Crew, speak up! paisan, nypdau this means you but I solicit advice from you lurkers too. intrigue2, you're in NYC, yes?

We (wife, boys 3.75 & 7) [1] are driving a 00 GT wagon to New York this weekend; staying in East Midtown. We're leaving DC Saturday at o'dark thirty (hopefully the kids will sleep) to reach the city by 9am. Park, check in, subway to Battery Park, ferry to Statue of Liberty and if time, the World Trade Center. If it's too cold we'll tour skyscrapers.

Sunday morning we're visiting my wife's friend. In the afternoon, I'll have the kids to myself and I was thinking of looking at a Crew member's ride. Shh, don't tell my wife that last one.

Where's a cheap place for gas (close to 95) that's close to the city?
(Let me know if this question is better asked elsewhere.)

Any roads/bridges/avenues & streets to avoid?

    ..Mike

[1] Don't try telling my son he's 3. He's three and three quarters.

While you're up there, you might swing by the Jacob Javits Center to see if there are any signs of the upcoming NY Auto Show yet. It's very near the Lincoln Tunnel (which I'm assuming you're going through), overlooking the Hudson River.

A scouting report, so to speak...

Has anybody here bought one of those emergency hammers to break window glass, and if so, which one?

Mike: don't forget to take the kids to FAO Schwarz on 58th and Fifth, or even to see Rockefeller Center if you have the time.

Serge (ex NYer - remember, you can take a New Yorker out of NY, but you can't take NY of out a New Yorker...or as they say here in South Florida, the further south you go in Florida, the further North you are..)
