FAO Schwarz! The kids will go nuts (and so will you and your wife). It's a good thing you have a wagon to put all their new toys in. :)

    Folks,

When your subie goes to the shop under the extended warranty who pays for the repair? The dealer or Subaru itself? I am debating whether extended warranty is worth the money. MSRP for gold option of 7/100K is more than 2K. For that much I can rebuild engine or tranny in which case I don't think it is worth buying that option! Anyone agree? Comments welcome!

    Thanks
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
My dad got the extended gold on 7/100 on his 97 legacy for $1200. If it's the SOA warranty, SOA pays for the repair the same as the regular warranty. These are the best warranties IMHO.

    Mike,
The NJ Turnpike has decent gas prices, so I'd fill up on there before getting to the Lincoln Tunnel. Sounds like a fun weekend, and the weather on Sat and Sun should be decent. What time on Sunday are we gonna have this shin-dig in the city, I'll actually be in Manhattan Sunday free after 10am.

    Mike,

I would suggest if you are going to be using the subway to get around, to get the all day Metro Card. You get unlimited rides for a 24 hour period. Its definitely easier than driving through midtown. If you are getting in Sat morning, most of the roads should be fine. Definitely use the Lincoln Tunnel, this way you avoid most of the city mess.

    Enjoy,

I was going to say the same thing paisan did about gas. Although I get gas cheaper than what's on the NJ Turnpike, that'll be the easiest. Don't forget it's all full service in NJ too. Well, actually it's just "we pump your gas".
Take the Lincoln Tunnel at the end of the Turnpike and that will take you straight into mid-town. Last night was chaos on some of the bridges because of falling ice. Hopefully it won't be a problem by the weekend. There's quite a bit of construction in mid-town but it shouldn't be too bad.
Here's the site for a local news station. If you get to the tunnel by around 9:00, you shouldn't have much of a problem. http://www.1010wins.com/
    Have fun and good luck.

After 3+ months (!) of squabbling with insurances and bodyshop, I was finally reunited with my beloved Forester. Oh baby!

It was a bittersweet victory though. I had to bring in insurance folks, to push the shop to do repairs right -- and even that was not much help. That estimator guy from State Farm was so openly on the side of the shop, that I wonder if all adjustors in the area are "owned" by body shops these days.

Two minor problems that popped up after car was taking off the lot. Apparently, shop forgot to put back that little toolkit -- a small vinyl pack with wrenches inside, and with SUBARU written on it. Also, car VERY slightly pulls to the left. I'm going to test it some more, and then maybe have alignment done in that shop that KenS recommended.

Still -- whoo hooo!!! This weekend I plan to go up to the mountains, cornering twisties at 75 mph (that's what AWD is for!), and singing along Russian folksongs about speeding over the snowy steppe in "troika" (a Russian sled with 3 horses). My baby has not 3 but 165 of them horses!

About 10 miles from the body shop, the CEL thing came on... first time ever (now car has 6K mi). I tightened gas cap zillion times, put in Costco gas... still on. Hope it that oxygen sensor thingy nothing more. Soon I have to take the baby to 7.5 K service, and hopefully CEL will be taken care of then. Or should I take care of it now?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
and tell them to fix it. I'd also get on the horn with the insurance company.

Congratulations Kate. I doubt that I could have survived such a long separation from Rufus. With all of the foul ups I would keep a close eye on that pull. Is the frame totally straight? Enjoy the mountains!

  • dsackmandsackman Member Posts: 145
Kate, be careful of those 75mph corners. There is still some snow and ice in the mountains.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Glad to see you happily reunited, Kate! I got a similar call today from my body shop - we'll see if they fixed their screw-ups too...

For the CEL, make an appt with the dealer. While you are at it, ask him to give it a quick once-over, a "safety inspection" if you will, to make sure the body shop did good work. Professional eyes may catch something we would not.

Also, ask the body shop how long they guarantee their repairs. At least mine said they guarantee their work for life. Some offer only 1 year.

Loosh: saw that SCOA letter. We're on the front page, drooling over that red WRX wagon! Also, Sandy and Bob's "Toaster" are pictured on the same page, along with your OB.

Shameless plug: everyone here should consider joining the Subaru Club of America. It's just a few bucks, and the discounts on parts and service alone are worth it. Plus, Gary goes out of his way to organize very fun events along the east coast, and maybe even the SIA plant visit. Finally, the newsletter has some great pix! ;-)

    Check it out: www.subaruclub.com.

Mike: have fun in NY. I agree with getting gas on the Turnpike, cheap and easy. Make sure to eat NY Pizza. Chinatown is great if you like authentic chinese food.

    Join in if you can.

I actually cannot make this one. Tonight we have a local i Club meet, and I have an appointment to ride in a TURBOCHARGED Impreza RS.

I'll share impressions tomorrow. I just hope we can find some open roads to wind her up!

Y'all see this 30-day, money-back guarantee program that Land Rover is launching?:

DETROIT (AP) — Finding sales these days to be a jarring ride, Land Rover has rolled out a marketing pitch seen most on TV infomercials — money-back guarantees, this time on certain luxury sport utility vehicles.
Through May 31, the Ford Motor Co. unit will let would-be buyers drive its 2001 Discovery Series II model for 30 days or 1,500 miles — whichever comes first — and return it for a full refund if not satisfied.
‘‘We know our product is highly capable, but we wanted to add something else — an ironclad, money-back guarantee’’ for buyers of the four-wheel-drive SUV, said Howard Mosher, president and chief executive of Land Rover’s North American sales arm.

So, in theory, if it were truly "ironclad," you could "buy" one, take it on vacation and return it afterwards, for essentially a free extended rental. Of course, you'd presumably still have to temporarily fork over a pretty hefty down payment (which you'd hopefully get back sometime later), and there's the insurance cost; insurance probably wouldn't be too much for just 30 days, but I'd still would expect Land Rover insurance rates to be a bit steep.
I'd be somewhat tempted to try it -- I have no real desire to actually own a Land Rover, but it'd be mighty fun to take one on a serious jaunt -- if the mileage limit were higher than 1,500 miles. There's not really anywhere within less than 750 miles of Austin that I'd find especially exciting for a Land Rover expedition, other than maybe Big Bend National Park; I'd want at least 2,000 miles to really have some serious fun in New Mexico.
And, alas, I can't quite ignore the questionable ethics of the whole idea ...
  • FrankMcFrankMc Member Posts: 228
This Land Rover news can't be seen as a positive, although Saturn has had a similar deal for awhile. If people actually do the "free vacation" scam then Land Rover will lose alot of money.

A year ago a friend of mine leased a Land Rover. He wouldn't even tell me until after he did it because he didn't want me hassling him about not getting a Sube. :) When it was about a month old, it left him stranded on the side of the road during a trip to Vermont. I think it had to do with a recall to their stability system. He screamed to LR and they replaced it because there were a lot of other problems as well.

I have always liked the looks of a Land Rover. I just love them. But, why spend so much money on a car that has horrible reliability. I feel like if I bought one I would have to opt for an option of some sort to do with a long range fuel tank, like in some airplanes. The gas mileage is horrible. And they don't make a 6 cyl. I know they did and may be doing it again. But car is probably too heavy. Still like the looks but, am so glad I got a Subie!
  • anibalbanibalb Member Posts: 193
Oh yeah. And subies have 2 sunroofs too!!!! Way to go SUBARU!

Hi, I am just joining. Got my new outback station wagon last week, and am loving it! The one thing I have noticed is the slowness of the rear defroster. At first, I thought it was broken- it took a good 15 minutes to truly kick in. I had cleaned the snow and ice off all the windows except the back- waiting for it to melt a little. Eventually, I started chopping at it to break the ice off the rear window. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my rear window?

    Thanks, Talia
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Talia: I guess it depends on the temperature. We tend to have mild winters where I live, but the rear defrost is quick and effective. Mind you it's usually only 30 degrees or so here. In below-zero temps I'd expect to have to give it a hand, just be careful with the chopping so you don't scratch the car.

The meet on Thursday was fun (sorry I missed the chat folks). We had 14 Imprezas, mostly white, oddly enough. We also had 2 Legacys and my Forester.

WDB: you would have loved this one Legacy GT Ltd Sedan. HIDs, intake, full suspension, exhaust, built-in radar w/remote, and an awesome stereo better than my home system! Fully tricked out inside, completely stealthy outside. Not even one sticker.

The highlight of the night was my ride-along with PiperCub (Scott, IIRC). He has a white RS with a turbo, intercooler, carbon fiber adjustable wing, v5 suspension, and 3" straight pipe (no muffler at all).

The exhaust note was surprisingly mellow, but got loud once you let 'er rip. Sweeeet! No turbo lag to speak of, it just presses you back into the seat, all through the rev range.

He's invested quite a bit ($6 grand I think), though, and the group buy they went through was a nightmare. He had to fight to get all the parts delivered, and way past the promise date. The vendor was kicked off i Club, even.

He had a J&S knock sensor, and had already done the pistons and cams. SAFC, too. The works. I'll get some photos up later, but it was at night so I'm not sure how much they'll show.

Anyone with a bottomless wallet ought to consider it, though. It's a sweet feeling. Heck, and we didn't even use more than 3rd gear! The price sounds high, but you had to try it to understand. I'm sure it would hit 60 in 5.5 seconds or so, at least by SOTP, even without clutch abuse.

He promised a more thorough ride-along next time. It was 11pm and there was actually a cop scoping us out. I guess 14 RSs side-by-side can look a little suspicious!

    Hi there,

I am interested in buying a used Outback or Forester and after doing some research, I would like to hear what you owners have to say. I assume the reliabilty factor is high for both models, but does one have more "pep" than the other, or does the gas mileage compare pretty evenly? I can't seem to find any with a V6- I hear the new models will have one. Could someone explain how they do on the road - enough get and go, or is there a substantial lag in acceleration? If anyone has driven both - I would love to hear your comments - are they noisy? Do they both handle pretty much the same? Is the reliability as good as the reputation??? Thanks so much for your help!!!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Highway power on all the 2.5s is pretty good for passing and what not. I found the 2.5 to be a bit weak off the line when loaded with 5 200+lb guys in it. The new LL Bean and VDC have the H6 motor in it. And yes they are all quite reliable. (my family has over 6 subies ranging from '88-'00)

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It will be hard to find a V6 - because there is no V6, just a boxer, or horizontally opposed, six.

Forester edges the OB in reliability scores, perhaps because it's built in Japan, and the OB is made in Indiana. Nonetheless, both score very well.

Forester is lighter and has the same engine, so it's peppier. EPA mileage figures are the same, but again from personal experience at least, the Forester tends to do better. Either one will absolutely humiliate what a comparable SUV would do in gas mileage, for sure.

Both are quiet, but the Outback wins here. C&D measured just 69 decibels at cruising speeds for the OB, 70 for the Forester. The Infiniti I30 was 71, the CR-V 73, and the Rousch Mustang some where in the 90's! The quietest vehicle tested all year registered 67dB, so that's how close the OB came to it.

Handling? Go for the Forester S, with the 16" rims, and its light and agile feel. It's very manueverable. The Outback has a smoother ride, no doubt.

Drive both and see which fits your needs while bringing the biggest smile to your face. I have a Forester, while my dad and cousin both have Outbacks. I love mine, but I wouldn't mind swapping with them for a week if I had to.

A friend of mine is winging, or rather driving, his way West on a kind of walkabout. In a '93(?) Legacy wagon. He is doing this on the cheap, staying mostly in hostels and what-not. He is on a mission to meet and experience the people of our country, as well as see all the sights. If anyone is interested in hosting this fine young man for a day, contact him via email. He is in San Antonio, TX today. I know not what his exact itinerary is but, I suspect, neither does he! His name is Matt Riggs:

If you need rear seat legroom - pick the Outback. If that's not an issue, the Forester would be fine. My old bones perfer the OB's ride being a bit softer. Still handles very well in the twisties :)

just finished probably my last long distance trip in my 2000 Outback, before I have to sell it.

Did about 1200 kms (750 miles) in two days of travelling. Did mostly about 140km/h (87 mph) ... all highway - great passing power with the revs in the 4000 range. Even after 1 1/2 years of owning this car, I marvel at how smooth it drives. I also love the ambience of the cockpit, really warm and comfy in the middle of winter.

At the end of my ownership, I have mostly praise for this vehicle. I would rather sell my MX-6 than this car (but it just doesn't make sense for me to leave it depreciating for 2-3 years).

    these are my concerns:

I wish I hadn't had two fuel injectors die on me and leave me stranded twice. Maybe I got unlucky, or maybe alot of the original batch 5sp OBs have this problem.

The seats suck. After each long drive, I have back-aches, leg cramps. It's not me -- I'm an active 27 year old. There is simply not enough back support.

Minor: color. This is my last dark color car (green) - it just shows dirt too easily...

the tires suck in snow and ice. plus they are firestones - that still makes me nervous

Despite all this, I am pretty convinced that when I come back to North America in a few years, I'll be buying another Outback. Hopefully by then they have a 5sp H6 available in the base model! (or just maybe if I can afford the insurance ... a WRX wagon :)

Anyway, I'm going to be posting for another 4 weeks, but I still wanted to thank everyone for the great resource and help on the net -- especially juice. (I don't know how you can keep up all that enthusiasm!)

Also thank you Patti and Dennis for being on these boards. Your kind of proactive support for Subaru is incredibly rare in any commercial enterprise, and definitely helps to make customers feel more appreciated.
  • amishraamishra Member Posts: 367
oh forgot to mention that I managed to eke out about 28 mpg on this last trip.

also found that I could travel about 20 minutes at 70 mph with the fuel gauge empty light on... (Didn't go any further, because I chickened out!)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587

Ash, what are you going to be doing in England? I gather by your post that it is not a permanent move, you are going to find the winter much more miserable there than here, I remember Going back to Ireland for a visit after a year and half here It was in September and I thought I was going to Die from the cold it does not get anywhere near as cold as here but the damp penetrates right through to your bones, anyway good luck and as juice says keep posting.

Have fun in England. Keep us posted on all Subie activities from the UK. There's a neat dealer, in London (Ace Kensington) you should visit. They're located on Radley Mews, which is somewhat hard to find. If you go to the "Sube Directory," their web site is listed there.
