although we own a silver WRX now, sometimes I wish we went for WRB... it does fit WRX image better.
  • twrxtwrx Member Posts: 647
.....is that you want those giant yellow racing stripes and Subaru stars on it like the rally cars. Oh how hard it was to resist when I had a WR Blue!

Yes, it's almost imperative to have the yellow graphics on the side. I'm planning to put them on when I finally get one. I'm sure my family is going to absolutely HATE it... all the more reason they won't ever ask to drive my car and I'll be the exclusive driver. :)

Wasn't that a Sandpiper's song? One Ton A Hummer? Sometimes misheard as One Ton o' Metal or One Ton Tomato.

So now it is time to advocate getting a white WRX and painting red polka dots on it and taking it to the Tour de France.

(If you follow cycling you get it eh?)

And yes "Sonic" is about as close to "Schoolbus" as it gets.

Hey Bruce, check your inbox, the pics are up in my Subaru Crew photo album.

I didn't know they made school buses with 4 doors, turbos, hood scoops, and AWD. I'm putting my kids in your school district. :o)

Normally I'm againt stickers and slammed customs, but I'd make an exception for a tribute vehicle that looked like the WRC cars. Especially if it wsa ever used in a Rally Cross or track event.

First a quick update...the path reports came back negative on the lymph nodes that were removed during Susan's surgery last week; so it goes to show that all of your thoughts and prayers worked...score one the THE BIG GUY (you know who I mean)....and to those of you who instigated that huge flower arrangement that came with a card from the SOA family (you know who you are!), a great big thanks...it really surprised Susan and they are beautiful...which leads me to the SOS part...Susan would normally come on here and thank you personally, but our computer seems to have taken a vacation...all of you PC people, here is the problem...we are running Windows ME (not an auspicious start), and are getting messages either that resources are dangerously low or that there is not enough free memory, and then dialog boxes asking us to close various background programs. What can the problem be, and better yet, what can the solution be? I'm writing this from Westglades Middle School (home of the Wolves, howling with Pride!), so I'll check in doring my planning period or tomorrow...any help would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA
Serge, Susan, Michael, and Dina the real dog.

Great news! About the PC, I'm a MAC guy and can offer no advice. Sorry... ;(

Great news, Serge. Excellent. Made my day and it's only 9:42. :-)

WinMe? That's your problem right there...

    LOL

That's such a general problem, but I'd focus on memory, how much you have, size of the virtual memory, and then what's taking up your memory.

Odds are you have a bunch of software that you don't need, be it Spyware or whatever. Time to clean that stuff up. Use the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and look for anything suspicious.

From my experience, things like Gator, which saves your password (scary, no?), might be among the first things to remove, if you have it. Some of my users also had a program called eAnthology. It pitched itself as a pop-up blocker, fooled some users. Turned out to be the biggest pop-up nightmare I've ever seen! It actually *was* a pop-up generator.

Finally, I installed Grokster a year ago and liked it. But...got a new PC, and downloaded the new version. What a nightmare. It installed about a dozen pieces of Spyware. I tried to remove them one by one, but it was so bad that I reformatted the entire thing, started from scratch. Wasted a day on that.

So, if kids have used your machine to download MP3s, you may have a bunch of unneeded software that load up each morning and takes up valuable memory.

    Great news indeed.

The usual fix for the ME problem is just to reboot. And then upgrade. (link)

In addition to Juice's suggestions, running scan disk and defragging your hard disk may help. If you are running Word, rename all instances of Normal.dot to normal.old.

Glad to hear the good news!

I'm also a Mac/UNIX guy, but the symptoms you describe are general enough to make me wonder if your hard disk space is getting low. That's the first thing I would check. In any modern OS, the hard disk, virtual memory, and physical memory are all intertwined, and low HD space can give the symptoms you describe. If you have less than a few hundred MB free, I'd start cleaning house.

Glad to hear the good news, usually if it has not gone to the lymph nodes the prognosis is good.

I checked all of the above and I'm using on 11 meg out of 40, however (and Steve, thanks for the link) the error with the normal.dot is familiar (Michael was doing school stuff in Word the day before) because I've had the problem last year...I will do that when I get home.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Here's a MS knowledge base article about the normal.dot problem.

    Great news !

I'm with juice, WinME is the problem. I run Mac/Unix when possible, and Win2000 when not... With just 40 meg available on your hard drive, though, you can forget about Win2000. Have you considered downgrading to Win95 ? Sounds like you're on an older machine.

a laptop with only a 4 gig hard drive. I have no problems.

  • bsvollerbsvoller Member Posts: 528
He said meg, not gig. Come to think of it, you can't get Win95 on a machine with 40 meg either...

Serge, did you mean gig ? If so, hard drive space isn't the issue.

Great news about Susan! I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's only more good news from now on.

Re: Win ME - My husband's lap top uses ME and it's the pits. I told him repeatedly to upgrade to Win2000 or XP, but he's worried some of his ancient programs will no longer run. And I think he kind of enjoys swearing at it.

    It's therapeutic.

Speaking of therapy, where is Ross? Haven't heard from him in a while. Pop in and say hi if you're lurking.

And where's Don? How is Marianne? How is the Yellow Bike? :o)

WONDERFUL news .... I know it's far from 'over' but normal lymph is GOOD!!!
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I can attest to the fact that SOMEBODY is buying HUMMERS and LOTS of them and that's GREAT for the local economy. I work at schools on either side of the AM General factory and many of our kids' families have one or both parents employed there. Every day I'm seeing auto transports leaving full of new HUMMERS ....
and as far as the bright yellow? It's my own personal opinion that people who want a HUMMER want to be SEEN and that bright yellow certainly ensures it .. lol

I actually got to speak to the famous Susan today. She's an incredibly strong woman and she sounds great. I'm a firm believer in the power of a positive attitude and she surely has that.

I wish I could help with the PC issue, but I'm seriously PC challenged. It's my major short-coming. I hope it gets worked out so you can join us in the chat this week. I have a feeling it's going to be a fun one!

    Serge: Fabulous, wonderful news! Cheers!

Juice: Ross is around, I've had e-mail from him. He's fine, but has relocated further north, and has suffered yet another ISP & e-mail address change. Soon as I get a chance, I'll pass on your good wishes!

    Cheers!

As if you wouldn't notice a Hummer, but I agree, it's all about the flashiness of the yellow.

Is Ross still in a car-free zone?

Serge: Great news! Best wishes to Susan for a steady and successful recovery.

Brenda: I have to admit I am not a fan of the Hummer H2. There are a lot of them on the streets in my town, and most are indeed yellow. I see H2s as escalading (misspelling intentional ;-) ) the "I-must-sit-higher-off-the-road-and-see-over-you" arms race, while attempting to call attention to the fact that the owner can either spare the money, or has gone deeply in hock, for what amounts to a very bulky, very expensive Suburban. (juice and I had a conversation about the auto-buying traits of the locals when he last visited here.)

Having thus ranted, I have to admit that the success of the H2, as it benefits the South Bend economy, is very much a good thing. When you own a Studebaker (as I do) you're almost forced to become versed in the history of the company, including its ultimate demise as an automaker. Studebaker's closure in December 1963 had a serious effect on the Michiana region. In addition to jobs lost, many Studebaker retirees lost their pensions due to the company's underfunding of its defined benefit pension plan.

That debacle led in large part to the passage of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act(ERISA) in 1974. The Studebaker/ERISA story was recalled again recently when the Enron scandal did much the same to 401(k) plans.

To see how South Bend has rebounded - and not just due to AM General - see http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/NewsPapers/SouthBendTribune/- - - - 150Years.htm and scroll down to "The good side of Studebaker's demise."

    Ed

PS: I did see an H2 towing a car trailer on the NJ Turnpike today, so there exists at least one instance of one being put to practical use.

Yeah (he said sheepishly) i meant 40 Gig. Better news, the PC is fixed...I tried Steve's fix with the normal.dot template in WORD and that was the problem...took 30 secs to fix (though Susan and I were looking for an excuse to buy a new Dell...the 2 year-old Dell we have is 800mhz, 128 mb of Ram, 40 GIG hd, works well except for these niggling problems...Michael had to use Crossword puzzle maker on line for his Language Arts class and copied the puzzle and associated graphocs to Word...that did the foul deed.
Aneway, thanks to all for the quick PC response and thanks, Patti for taking the time out to talk to Susan.

P.S. I PASSED MY SUBJECT AREA EXAM IN SOCIAL SCIENCES!

as a fairly recent South Bend-ian, I enjoy reading the history ...

for any of you who visit South Bend (Tire Rack, College Football Hall of Fame, ND, loads of good restaurants ... lol) it really IS worth a visit to the Tippecanoe Restaurant in the old Studebaker Mansion ... it's a great place to eat in a beautiful setting, and not terribly expensive (around $20 - or less - for entree)

also Capshaholm just down the street is open for tours .. it's the Oliver mansion (of Oliver Plow Works fame) and looks just as it did when the family lived there. It was donated to the museum furnishings intact ....

I run Adaware 1x a week, free download from downloads.com This will yank out spyware for you.

Upgrade to Win 2K when you can, it's a vast improvement over ME. ME is 98 with a different face.
