(If you follow cycling you get it eh?)
And yes "Sonic" is about as close to "Schoolbus" as it gets.

I didn't know they made school buses with 4 doors, turbos, hood scoops, and AWD. I'm putting my kids in your school district.
Normally I'm againt stickers and slammed customs, but I'd make an exception for a tribute vehicle that looked like the WRC cars. Especially if it wsa ever used in a Rally Cross or track event.

WinMe? That's your problem right there...
LOL
That's such a general problem, but I'd focus on memory, how much you have, size of the virtual memory, and then what's taking up your memory.
Odds are you have a bunch of software that you don't need, be it Spyware or whatever. Time to clean that stuff up. Use the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and look for anything suspicious.
From my experience, things like Gator, which saves your password (scary, no?), might be among the first things to remove, if you have it. Some of my users also had a program called eAnthology. It pitched itself as a pop-up blocker, fooled some users. Turned out to be the biggest pop-up nightmare I've ever seen! It actually *was* a pop-up generator.
Finally, I installed Grokster a year ago and liked it. But...got a new PC, and downloaded the new version. What a nightmare. It installed about a dozen pieces of Spyware. I tried to remove them one by one, but it was so bad that I reformatted the entire thing, started from scratch. Wasted a day on that.
So, if kids have used your machine to download MP3s, you may have a bunch of unneeded software that load up each morning and takes up valuable memory.

The usual fix for the ME problem is just to reboot. And then upgrade. (link)
In addition to Juice's suggestions, running scan disk and defragging your hard disk may help. If you are running Word, rename all instances of Normal.dot to normal.old.
Steve, Host
I'm also a Mac/UNIX guy, but the symptoms you describe are general enough to make me wonder if your hard disk space is getting low. That's the first thing I would check. In any modern OS, the hard disk, virtual memory, and physical memory are all intertwined, and low HD space can give the symptoms you describe. If you have less than a few hundred MB free, I'd start cleaning house.
Craig
That's wonderful news

Hard drives are cheap.

Cheers Pat.

I'm with juice, WinME is the problem. I run Mac/Unix when possible, and Win2000 when not... With just 40 meg available on your hard drive, though, you can forget about Win2000. Have you considered downgrading to Win95 ? Sounds like you're on an older machine.

Jim
Serge, did you mean gig ? If so, hard drive space isn't the issue.

Re: Win ME - My husband's lap top uses ME and it's the pits. I told him repeatedly to upgrade to Win2000 or XP, but he's worried some of his ancient programs will no longer run. And I think he kind of enjoys swearing at it.
Speaking of therapy, where is Ross? Haven't heard from him in a while. Pop in and say hi if you're lurking.
And where's Don? How is Marianne? How is the Yellow Bike?

and as far as the bright yellow? It's my own personal opinion that people who want a HUMMER want to be SEEN and that bright yellow certainly ensures it .. lol
I wish I could help with the PC issue, but I'm seriously PC challenged. It's my major short-coming. I hope it gets worked out so you can join us in the chat this week. I have a feeling it's going to be a fun one!

Juice: Ross is around, I've had e-mail from him. He's fine, but has relocated further north, and has suffered yet another ISP & e-mail address change. Soon as I get a chance, I'll pass on your good wishes!
Cheers!
Paul
Is Ross still in a car-free zone?

Brenda: I have to admit I am not a fan of the Hummer H2. There are a lot of them on the streets in my town, and most are indeed yellow. I see H2s as escalading (misspelling intentional ;-) ) the "I-must-sit-higher-off-the-road-and-see-over-you" arms race, while attempting to call attention to the fact that the owner can either spare the money, or has gone deeply in hock, for what amounts to a very bulky, very expensive Suburban. (juice and I had a conversation about the auto-buying traits of the locals when he last visited here.)
Having thus ranted, I have to admit that the success of the H2, as it benefits the South Bend economy, is very much a good thing. When you own a Studebaker (as I do) you're almost forced to become versed in the history of the company, including its ultimate demise as an automaker. Studebaker's closure in December 1963 had a serious effect on the Michiana region. In addition to jobs lost, many Studebaker retirees lost their pensions due to the company's underfunding of its defined benefit pension plan.
That debacle led in large part to the passage of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act(ERISA) in 1974. The Studebaker/ERISA story was recalled again recently when the Enron scandal did much the same to 401(k) plans.
To see how South Bend has rebounded - and not just due to AM General - see http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/NewsPapers/SouthBendTribune/- - - - 150Years.htm and scroll down to "The good side of Studebaker's demise."
Ed
PS: I did see an H2 towing a car trailer on the NJ Turnpike today, so there exists at least one instance of one being put to practical use.
Patti
Aneway, thanks to all for the quick PC response and thanks, Patti for taking the time out to talk to Susan.
P.S. I PASSED MY SUBJECT AREA EXAM IN SOCIAL SCIENCES!
Interesting read, Ed.

No thanks needed for the chat with Susan. I really enjoyed actually "meeting" her. She's a very warm person and it was great to get to chat with her for a bit.

for any of you who visit South Bend (Tire Rack, College Football Hall of Fame, ND, loads of good restaurants ... lol) it really IS worth a visit to the Tippecanoe Restaurant in the old Studebaker Mansion ... it's a great place to eat in a beautiful setting, and not terribly expensive (around $20 - or less - for entree)
also Capshaholm just down the street is open for tours .. it's the Oliver mansion (of Oliver Plow Works fame) and looks just as it did when the family lived there. It was donated to the museum furnishings intact ....

I have excellent, fantastic, stupendous news for the Subaru Crew.
And I'll reveal what it is at the chat tonight! Trust me, it will be worth it to join! This is *HUGE* news!
what a cliffhanger! :-)

All I'll say is this is something we have wanted, collectively, for a very long time.

Upgrade to Win 2K when you can, it's a vast improvement over ME. ME is 98 with a different face.
