Even here in MD I've never found cause to use 10w-30. It's never that cold for long enough.

    Loosh,

Don't you mean it's not hot for long enough?

Continued thoughts and prayers coming your way. Excellent suggestion on the donations!

5W-30 has an advantage over 10W-30 in colder climates, but for Florida, I would say 10W-30 all the way. And actually, M1 10W-30 cold flows as well as dino 5W-30, so I would even recommend M1 10W-30 in moderately cold climates. So definitely go for the M1 10W-30.

The way oils work, the fewer spread between the two numbers, the less additives/modifiers are in the oil and longer it will last. So, 10W-30 has an advantage because it has a spread of 20 points compared to 25 for 5W-30.

Glad to hear the surgery is done and went well. And yes, you do need to stay healthy, so stock up on the Yoplait yogurt! Wash off and save the foil lids and then send them in to Yoplait. They will donate 10 cents to the Susan Komen foundation for each lid.

A recent article in Newsweek dicusses the power of prayer and it's impact on health. We are running our own little test here. Our thoughts and prayers are with Susan, Michael and you.

    Greg

    P.S. My vote is 10W-30 M1. That's what I use.

oops...yea sorry I had myself reversed.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Thanks for the update, Serge.

BTW, when BMW hosted an event, they donated a dollar for each mile you test drove to the Susan Komen fund. I drove every model they had on the lot! :-)

    Off to get some yogurt...

Greg has it right - we are putting that Newsweek article to the test. We pray, you win!! Seriously, glad to hear step one went well. Rest up so that you can deal with the days ahead.

Yeah, definitely stay with the 10W30. I'm running that year round in New Jersey with 5,000 mile oil changes on the OEM filter.

I use 10-30 in the SVX and 10-40 in the Trooper. I may go to 10-40 on the SVX too just cause it's a bit older now and the thicker oil helps reduce leakage/burnage.

juice: are you sure that's not a typo, and it's actually two 165 hp EJ25s bolted together to form a 330 hp H8? ;-p

As always Serge, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I run 10W30 year 'round in NJ. The pour point temp is about the same as 5W, IIRC.

Ed: I'm salivating at the thought!

Maybe they swapped out for an SVX engine and bolted on a supercharger? :-)

Hmmm...maybe. I wonder whether anyone has attempted to transplant an SVX engine into one of the more mundane Subarus?

I think we need to test that theory. I'll graciously volunteer Sandy as the test bed, all we need now is an engine donor...

I've been trying to get in here for an hour! Where are the hampsters?

Drove a used (i.e. broken in) WRX today while waiting for my 60k service on the OB. Much better experience....I really want the car, but the $$ is too high. Why spend $20k on a used one if Fitz is selling new for $21,300? Well, 'coz I like bugeyes better I guess, but not THAT much better.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I agree, buy new. That $1300 wouldn't buy you even a warranty to match the new car's, never mind the usage and miles. Subies don't depreciate much.

$21,368, had to double-check that myself. Silver wagon, perfect. Wow.

I went out and bought my 03 when I first saw pictures of the 04. I had always wanted a WRX, and then it suddenly became imperative to get an 03 while the pickings were still good. I just don't like the looks of the 04 front end (I think the rear looks great, however). The STi carries the new front end styling well, but the base WRX kinda has a bland Corolla/Tercel look. So, I vote for bugeyes all the way. I imagine it would be tough to find an 03 at this point, unless maybe it's a yellow wagon....

I wonder if Patti can help locate an 03 ??

    Craig
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Craig: you should have seen the last generation Corolla that sold in Brazil, it actually had those same bug eyes.

Call Fitz and see if they can find a left over 2003. Dealers have the ability to do that.

Here's what I found in all of VA and DE (I only paid attention to manual transmission cars). Slim pickings, and only one wagon. Prices are MSRP, obviously these would be heavily discounted.

the last 5 digits of the VIN tell the production number (starting from 0) for the 2003 model year. Numbers over 10000 are towards the end of the model year run and will be the freshest. Anything under 5000 has been on the lot over a year.

For reference, my 03 WRX was approx. #5700 built for 2003, was produced in August 02 and arrived on the lot in October 02. I bought it in January 03.

Cars less than 00127 have the old clutch design, so I would avoid those alltogether.

Got back a couple of days ago from vacation in Mexico, only to get a 24 hour bug back in the big apple.

Brenda- I'm glad to hear your dad is doing better. I know how it goes getting that phone call. Last year we came home from vacation to find both my parents in the hospital. Unfortunately 2 days later we lost my dad. It was scary coming home this time- I was afraid to get another voice mail(especially it was the same vacation spot as last time.) Trying to convince them to move near you will be hard, but if it happens you will all feel better.

Serge- I'm glad to hear that everything went well for Susan. Our thoughts and prayers are going your way for all three of you.

Mike- nice thought the emergency contact list for Tri-state. Also congrats on your run. I liked Juice's write up.

As for halloween -unfortunately, jsut before vacation, I was serving Federal jury duty in Brooklyn. Never got out until 6:15 when I was finally exucsed by the judge. Then had to race home to bring my cat to the vet- her kidney's are starting to go so we had to board her.

Just a general "hola" to everyone, and hoping everything and everyone is doing great.

What about MD and DC? One 2003 yellow wagon, 5 speed, there you go Loosh...

Call first, to confirm it's a 5 speed.

I figured you local guys would cover that!! What, am I supposed to do the whole tri-state area?? :-) I just put in my zip at the subaru website, and kept increasing the radius until I had all of VA (and by size, DE) covered. Still a bunch of places in MD/PA/NJ I did not check. Somebody should put in a MD zip and go from there.

Needless to say Sonic Yellow was a bomb. I have gotten used to the color and I think I may go next spring to 17" wheels for it. I have done a virtual car on Tire Rack and gray wheels do look really nice with the yellow. Because my 03 is Sonic Yellow I ended up with it as the out come of my adventures with butchering of my 02 wagon by the local dealer. It was the car they most wanted to unload (but they did not want to unload it badly enough until SOA stepped in)There are presently 2 sonic wagons and 2 sonic sedans (all 5 mt) at Bob Rohrman Subaru in Laffayette IN.

BTW: I do like the attention that sonic draws and so far everything has been perfect on it. Here is an interesting one: The aftermarket sunroof is good for about 4 mpg of drag on the highway. 23.5 mpg to Louisville KY at 70mph with it open and 27.5 mpg on the way back at 70mph with it closed.

The new date is locked in, and the basic flights set.

Unfortunately, the Continental flight to Hong Kong does not go or return on the correct days (only 4 flights per week) to stay in sync with our guides and group, so we ended up booking a United flight with a change at Narita (Tokyo). Too bad, because I thought it would have been great fun if we ended up on Jim's (jfl) wifes shift. Maybe she could have bumped us up to Business Class????

We leave just before Thanksgiving, and 'gotcha day' should be around December 2nd.

Mark - tell me more.... Kids in Mexico get you thinking?

bluesubie- we'll see; I may be calling on you! :D

This PA dealer is offering *nothing* to compensate for the car being a year old. Just the standard $750 under invoice, and that is on top of a $525 "freight" fee (which is part of the MSRP sticker anyway, so he's trying to get me 2x).

I guess maybe I should ask a MD dealer to locate one. At that point of course, I have mentally committed to this whole idea and my wife will officially kill me.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
Boy that would be insane to buy a year-old 2003 for $25,000-26,500 when you can get a new '04 from Fitz at $21,500. You never get that year back if you're going to trade/resell some day.

And facts aside there's always opinion about cosmetics; mine is that the 2004 is a MUCH welcomed improvement. A (very) small reason why I got an M3 instead of a 2002 WRX was the bug eyes. :)

    -Colin
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
is that I may be willing to set aside the cosmetic issue for that big fat deal staring me right in the face 40 minutes away, instead of traipsing all over Mid-A for an '03 at no significant savings- the "best offer" from the PA guy is $21,500 with stereo upgrade, dimming mirror, bumper cover and cargo matts and a $300 boost gauge; $21,900 for the same plus carbon fiber trim. Oh and chromed rims deleted
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
I am with Colin on this go for the 04, no matter how you slice it that year difference will bite you in the [non-permissible content removed] big time when you come to sell or trade.

Even if you did get a year end deal which you are not BTW, it will not offset what you will get on selling the thing.

I myself prefer the look of the 04 I hated the bug eye look big time.

( And what the hell is wrong with Edmunds today had a hard time getting in and now that I am in it is as slow as a wet week in July)
     Cheers Pat.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
I agree, no sense chasing all over the mid-atlantic looking for an 03 when good deals can be had on an 04, and the resale value will be better. There were certainly some minor improvements in the 04. The downside is that I hear the 03 seats are better and the 04 apparently understeers in certain situations where the 03 would be neutral or oversteer (due to minor suspension changes). If you plan on tweaking the suspension either way, I guess the last part won't matter.

Any dealer serious about selling 03 models should be offering a heavy discount at this point. It should be enough to offset the lost resale value. If you're serious about getting an 03, let the dealer know what competing deals you're working on 04 models -- that should put it into the proper perspective for them. They should be desperate to move the 03 cars at this point.

    Craig

" If you're serious about getting an 03, let the dealer know what competing deals you're working on 04 models -- that should put it into the proper perspective for them"

Heh, you'd think that wouldn't you? *shrug* who knows what this guy is thinking.

I will admit the seats are better in the '03- firm, snug, and grabby. But then the '04 got in-glass antenna and brake force distribution. As for the suspension, the car is probably going to get swaybars anyway, depending on what's legal in D Stock.
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    Loosh-
you won't be listening to the radio, so it doesn't matter that the antenna isn't in-glass. :)

    -Dave
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
...that Loosh is worried about resale value. I think you're looking for the best deal. Seems like you really like that '03 you found as well.

Take it for another spin. :-) You probably will be able to feel it's personality and determine how it will do in D class (once you add some sways and some new rubber).

    -Brian
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
was beautiful, but an insane choice. 16,875 miles and they want 20 grand. Oh it gets better- the salesperson told me everything- what they paid for it, how much they want for it, etc.....they paid 18,500 for it on trade, so I doubt I could get it for less than 19,500. And the snorkus was in the trunk, and it used to have a turbo timer, so I am sure it was babied. Plus the turn signal was cracked.

    But it drove great!

p.s. uprated rear sways are illegal in Stock, and I don't think I wanna go down the STX route.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Yeah, that probably wouldn't be the wisest choice. It would surely seem like it was 'used', so to speak. ;-)

Just humor us and try an XT MT, will ya?!?!
