Steve beat me to the post, but we had a fun time last night. Steve, Kate, Jim and I had dinner at a local seafood restaurant in Santa Clara. It's always so good to put more faces on names, especially over some good food and drink.

The big conicidence, as Steve mentioned, is that Jim's wife works on the flight that he's planning on taking to China! How cool is that?

Unfortuantely, Steve just missed the 90+ degree weather we were having and had to experience the unusually cool and wet weather we've been getting. We'll just have to plan a "next time" when Steve can come to experience true California weather and go test driving as well.

I've posted a picture over in the Photos thread.

    Lucien,

    Do it! Get the wagon!!

Here's one way to lower insurance rates -- have a baby! :-D

    best Yoda voice

Patient, you must be. Become a true Jedi when you face your father in combat, you will.

Take an XT to the track, you must, to face Darth Vader in his WRX.

Oh yeah, and have a baby, you must. We need our next generation of Jedis. ;-)

    Steve: small world!

Kate: nice to hear the encouraging news.

Ed: haven't been to Sao Paulo since, um, 1985? I'm sure it's changed a lot. The city is *huge*, though, bigger than New York.

to meet Steve (fibber2), and (again) Jim and Ken. I was very flattered to be in a company of guys who know so much about car internals :-) :-)

Best luck to Steve, in his upcoming journey to China.

Brenda, glad to hear the worst seems to be over.

    On The Fence Club.

May I join? Hmmmm...getting a bit crowded here isn't it? Ouch, not very comfortable either. Papabear could you scoot up a little? Thanks. ;-)

I guess we wait until the Detroit show. If we don't get the Legacy Turbo I hope they at least add the PP to the MT XT. Guess I'll have to give that Legacy 3.0R a drive as well.

Part of me wishes there was another manufacturer that offered anything I was remotely interested in so I could buy that and punish SOA for their insolence with my pocket book.

juice - Great Yoda impersonation! The force is strong in you young Jedi!

Brenda - Glad to hear your Dad's doing better.

Kate, Jim, Steve and Ken - Sounds like a fun time was had by all.

why are you all concerned about this given the price (pretty competitive!) of the Forester XT?

if the Legacy turbo is also offered in a trim with no leather and no gizmos, I can see it easily under $30k.

if you want leather, heated seats, heated mirrors, headlight washers, HIDs, etc... then yeah that'll probably break $30k.

I want no-frills with the hot engine. The XT 5spd is PERFECT! :)

Other than not being a new Legacy, that is. lol

  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
We don't know how SOA will equip the Legacy, so pricing is uncertain. But, I agree, they could easily price it below $30k with little frills.

My only reasoning for the Legacy would be to get a sedan (since we already have a MPV). That wouldn't stop me from settling for an XT, but it just would be much easier to decide if that MT XT w/ PP was available, or I suppose an AT with VTD.

    (in best Vadar voice) "Impressive"

    "settling for an XT"

Just a few months and we already forget the exuberance.

Just poking fun at you Brian. ;-)

On The Fence Club, I like it.

The Crew has just re-inforced The Fence with a nice, sturdy 6"x6" beam on top, so all of us can fit. ;-)

anything I was remotely interested in so I could buy that and punish SOA for their insolence with my pocket book

    Now *that* was funny!

Guess I didn't expect much info yet. Even if they did know what was coming I doubt anyone is going to talk. It's too soon. Guess if the Legacy GT Turbo is more than a year off, knowing more about it makes the wait worse;)

I am a bit interested in the rumor of 175 HP with the NA 2.5 engine. If it gets upper 20's for mileage and still uses regular fuel, I might go for that. Plenty of time to think about it.
  • wrxsoon1wrxsoon1 Member Posts: 158
Thanks juice! That's a lot more comfortable! ;-)

You wouldn't happen to have some old carpeting or padding of some sort around would you? Sure would make the lllooooonnnngggg wait we've got for the Legacy a little more bearable. ;-)

    -Ian
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
upper 20s? A turbocharged 2.5L can achieve that on the highway if you behave yourself.

in combined city/hwy, there's no way a naturally aspirated 2.5L could do it. well-- maybe if you baby it like juice. or maybe his math isn't so good? ;)

just a tiny shot at your profoundly good gas mileage in Sandy. hehe

    -Colin
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
    hence the mileage.

Colin- curious to hear your thoughts on WRX vs. XT, filtered for those of us without superbikes.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
With a NA 2.5H4 from '00 Outback AT: I hit low 20's (sometimes mid 20's in the summer) for something like 50/50 city/highway, but that's being a bit 'spirited' at times. With just a strictly city/short trip tank, maybe low 20's but generally 19 or 20mpg, especially with the winter fuel we use. On highway trips, 25mpg isn't out of the question and I have gotten 28 a couple of times.

Have you driven a XT, Loosh?

    -Brian
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
I haven't Brian. I probably will, although right now in this area they are running a good $2-3k more than WRX wagons. Also I like aggressive seats and handling. I am not an avid autocrosser, but I do participate in 6 or so a year, which a Forester XT would probably not love.

Lastly, I have a touch, just a touch of the mod hangover Colin experienced. I am not likely to do anything to a WRX other than swaybar and bushings, wheel/tire, and maybe a muffler. I have a feeling I would start looking for aftermarket STi bits for the Forester suspension pretty soon after purchase. And seats too.... *shrug* who knows, gotta drive it first.
  • nine51nine51 Member Posts: 77
I have been called a tightwad a few times by my friends;) Guess I'd like a little of the technology that has been producing higher HP figures to streach a gallon of gas a little farther too. My WRX wagon has been averaging about 25-1/2 mpg this summer, (drops to 24-1/2 in winter) on 93 octane. I could give up a couple of seconds in 0-60 time if the fuel economy of the new Legacy 2.5 NA engine would get me that mileage or a little better on regular ($.20 less / gallon) I'd consider that. Looking at the FXT mileage ratings, I think the EPA sticker says 23 highway. Down a bit from my WRX's 27 highway. Hope the Legacy turbo is better than that.

I don't know what my wifes 02 Legacy GT wagon gets, I don't get to drive it very often and she doesn't keep track of her gas mileage. Another 10 hp in a vehicle that size, and a little lighter too, sounds attractive.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Colin: I've told you a million times, I don't exaggerate, and my math is fine, I mean, I'm twice your age! ;-)

Sorry, no padding on the fence. It had to be all-weather capable, naturally.

The UK Legacy is got +7mpg supposedly, I can't imagine ours won't improve by at least 2mpg or so. 25/30 would be excellent for a mid-size AWD wagon. I too hope that one runs on regular. Gotta keep the old-time core owners happy, not just the hot-rod newbies. :p

Great chat, BTW, I think we had 29 members! It scrolled well off the screen.

Just finished setting up a first-alert for NY/NJ/CT folks who want to be involved. Basically since most people have text messaging on their cell phones these days, I setup a list to try to get a grassroots alert system for folks who's cars get stolen. The idea is that if your car is stolen you can send a message to this list ( tristate911@azpinstalls.com ) and this will be sent to about 50-200 people subscribed to the list in the tri-state area. You can include your car's description, when/where it was stolen, plates, etc. Then other tri-staters out there will be on the lookout and can alert police if they see it being driven around.

To get on the list send a message from your phone to: list@azpinstalls.com with subscribe tristate911 yourname in the body. Or just drop me an e-mail and I'll get you on the list. Thanks folks!

Fun chat last night. Was that record attendance or what!? We tried prying future model info from Patti, but she kept her oath to secrecy. Plus, we don't want her to go into the dungeon again.

Loosh: Try driving an XT. It couldn't hurt ;-). Seriously, though, an XT would probably provide more enjoyment 90% of the time if you're only planning on auto-Xing 6X a year. Some folks over at the other forum as well as www.subaruforester.com have installed STi suspension bits. Check it out.

Colin: I'd be interested in hearing your assessment as well.

mike: The power of the internet! I hope you guys slow down the rash of stolen Subies.

The newest LS commercial claims a zero to sixty time of 6.42 seconds. Where do they get the 0.02 seconds from?? I would love to hear the marketing genius who came up with that one.

as Moderator Bob annointed her, is back deep inside! Just a crazy day, Juice! I was meeting bopping all day long. Well - I got the word on my next test vehicle. He's silver. He's fast. He's a 5-speed (gotta go back to one) and he's a Forester. I'm a happy girl!

I should get it in a week or so. Info. to follow!

I did catch it here in SE Wisconsin. It was fairly clear with a few scattered clouds about, but we were able to get a good look at the 'totality'.

I tried taking a couple pics with my Sony DSC-S50, but it's 3x optical zoom along with it's poor night vision Sony lens just wasn't powerful enough to get a decent pic. The one that did turn out (after using Photoshop to enhance it) doesn't do the eclipse any justice.

at 8:30 EST. Grabbed the whole family to go outside (without tripping the motion sensor on the flood lights). What a beautiful, clear, cool night. Most of the moon was still eclipsed. Stars seemed extra bright.

  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
we saw it as it began and took a few trips out into the "teens" temps to look ... the funniest was the 15 year old who stood on the porch saying .. yeah .. i don't see the moon .. but I still see the stars ... (and the moon wasn't totally eclipsed yet and of course was never fully dark) so we weren't sure what he meant .. until we realized he was standing too far under the PORCH ROOF to see the moon ... lol

    Mike's right, it's an XT6 in Big.

Patti - Enjoy the new ride! Probably be a bit of let down after the STi though. ;-)

Serge - More positive thoughts headed your and Susan's way from the PNW.

Eclipse was a bit fuzzy here as the clouds we hadn't had in about a week decided to arrive Sat. evening. :-(

Susan's surgery went fairly well this morning. She was scheduled for 10 AM, but didn't get in to the OR until 11:40. The surgeon said he took out some more lymph nodes as well; the path reports should be back in a couple of days. Susan is very tired and in some pain and discomfort, as is to be expected(though the Percocets help)...I was hoping to stay in the hospital room tonight, but that is only allowed in private rooms; she is in a semi-private room. She called me tonight complaining about the noise (a good sign!). Hopefully, she will be discharged tomorrow afternoon. Then, the hard part starts...appt on the 24th with the oncologist to set up a chemo schedule. Michael is doing fine through all of this, though I suspect that he is playing his cards close to the chest, so to speak.
Anyway, thanks for all your kind thoughts, prayers, and wishes...those of you in a frame of mind to do so, please donate to any of the cancer research foundations (Susan Komen, American Cancer Society, etc).
I will post updates as things progress.
Time for bed; I am exhausted.

Dave, that brought a smile to my face, but in my case, it was more like ZZZZZZZZZZZZ...ZZZZZZZZZZZ; I slept well, except for being woken up ay 7AM by my mother-in-law who wants Susan to stay in the hospital another day...no way...Susan called this morning and wants to hightail it out of there...evryone knows that people get sick in hospitals and no one gets any sleep there. Anyway, she is being discharged today...the surgeon was already there and sees no need for Susan to stay.

I have 2 oil-change appts..one for the Legacy and one for the WRX...I'm going to go buy some Mobil 1 for the WRX...not sure whether to use 5W-30 or 10W-30...any thoughts?...still 85 degrees here.
