I think Bob meant to say 'sending' instead. :-)

Hopefully you've heard by now how he's doing after the surgery. We're all thinking of you and your family.

Maybe you'll drive the WRX for the trip? ;-)

If anyone is thinking about shopping for the holidays and just don't know what to get that special person who has everything, I have a suggestion! Edmunds.com Strategies for Smart Car Buyers is now available to purchase!!! Get one for all your family, friends, and don't forget one for yourself.

I received my copy the other day and it is a pretty slick publication. I wonder what the reaction the dealers may have if I bring it along as a reference during my next vehicle purchase?
    ;-)

Please share any comments and observations in the Edmunds.com's New Book: Strategies for Smart Car Buyers discussion in News & Views.

Another vote for going, in case you were debating it. Just drive like you type; it'll take 5-6 hours tops!

Just trying to keep your spirits up...

I hope things work out okay, but I agree with the sentiments ogf most of the crew, get there ASAP hopefully there will be a postive outcome but if anything happened and you were not there you will never forgive yourself.

    Just my 2 cents.

      Cheers Pat.

Has arrived in Ottawa Canada, light snow overnight, but we have had freezing rain and Ice pellets all day.

Rita just went out with Mac and slipped and fell on the icy street she has a pretty good bruise on her hip.

     Cheers Pat.

Hoping everything works out fine for your Dad. You should go. A number of years ago, I had the same thing happen. My wife was in Manhattan working. My folks were on vacation. I walked into the emergency room and went into surgery completely alone...not fun at all. So get going. You'll be glad you did.

Ouch, Pat. Remind her that unlike little Mac, she does not have all-paw drive. ;-)

Go. I always regret when I don't go. This past spring my mom was in the hospital following a heart attack. I was there almost every day (1.5 hr drive). On Mother's day she begged me not to come and became upset when I insisted. I gave in, thinking she would be home the next weekend. She passed away 9 days later.

I don't think Brenda was debating going vs. not going. She was debating driving out immediately (22 hour trip) versus waiting until she could get a flight out.

My vote is flight, but I'm awful with long drives. I'm shot driving 1200 miles to Phoenix over two days with a partner... couldn't possibly do it myself.

    "Sending," not "ending." Sorry...

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If that's the case, I say fly. 22 hours is a long drive and she's under a lot of pressure and stress. Use the energy to cheer dad up when you see him. Wishing you the best...

won on Jeopardy. She'll be on again tonight, so try to catch it! Mary actually had the confidence in me to make me a manager in Customer Service many moons ago. I doubt I'd be still doing what I do if I didn't have her support and guideance.

Sunburns and 80 degrees? We can't be on the same continent. ;-) I don't think we've been above 50 degrees for a week or so here in Seattle. Sunny sure, but downright cold.

It's a shame she didn't win last night. That dang clicker. I read that if you click in before some "light" goes on, you get a half second delay in clicking again. It looks like that really makes a difference!

thank you so much for all the warm and heartfelt wishes .. I talked to my mother again last night. According to her, his color is much better, but he is still very ill (of course). My brother and his family were there (and while I'm not sure how 'helpful' that is, at least it's a 'distraction' - and that's another looooooong story .. lol)
At any rate, I'm still at home for now. I do understand all the urgings to go quickly, however we were there in August and had a wonderful visit ... after a lifetime of not much relationship with my father, it's actually improved GREATLY in the last 3 years for a number of reasons ...
Many people here have questioned how he could handle the pain of this for so long without seeking medical attention. He has long used (abused) prescription pain medication. This has really been a serious problem for him. I'm quite sure he had some 'on hand' and just medicated himself into a daze. My current partner and I started urging this summer that they consider selling the house there and moving closer to us here so that we can help them as they get older. We'll keep urging ...
thank you again .. it's nice to be a part of such a caring group ..

I've been watching that too, Patti, very cool! Last night the guy on the right won. They all missed the Final Jeopardy question, though.

I knew she was bright - she recognized your talent early on.

OK, folks, last time we got 3 Crew letters published, now Autoweek is asking for picks from the Tokyo Show. E-mail them at awpoll@crain.com by the 6th! Let's see if we can get in there again.

I picked the HSC, B9 Scrambler, and that motorcycle-like 2 seater I thought Colin would like as winners, and that roaming office from Suzuki and the Honda doorstop and my losers.

    antibiotics are wonderful things ...
today's news ... mother reports that dad's color is 'near normal' and he was removed from the ventilator today so that's a biggie ... still in ICU of course ..
my mother sounds much better tonight also ...

lol Loosh! Join us on the XT-WRX-LegacyGT fence, won't ya?

    -Brian
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
    *ouch* mmmmm. Comfy!!

I love my car I really do. I'm just jonesing for a wagon again. And I have a feeling I'm gonna get priced out of the Legacy fold. I do like to auto-x once and a while, and I don't think the Forester will like that much either. *shrug* nice fence!
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I'm sharing that same uncertainty too with the new Legacy turbo. We can only speculate at to what the price comes in at for the Legacy - will it be over $30k or under? *shrug*

If SOA would just make it easier to decide - like putting a premium package on the MT XT. I'd be sure to sway then.

    -Brian
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
over at nabisco is that the Legacy turbo may not make it here until about 9 months or so after the non-turbos debut here. Source is a Subie rep.

Cited reasons are to give the new H-6 some extra time in the market, and for additional emissions testing.

    Bob
  • jimmyp1jimmyp1 Member Posts: 640
The thousands of STi's and XT's running around aren't proof that the engine is emissions legal? Sounds bogus to me.

I got back a little while ago from a wonderful Silicon Valley Crew dinner with Ken, Jim & Kate. It was great to meet them, and we had much in common. Thanks for a wonderful evening, guys!!!

Try this one for strange coincidences: Beth and I have been doing a lot of research on flights from the NY area to Hong Kong, the Southern Gateway into China. Our #1 preference is the only non-stop among all of the airlines: flown by Continental (I think 4 days per week) on a specially equipped 777 (the 777ER). 16+ hrs aloft, but it beats the typical 21-24 hr trip on the others with a stop in Tokyo, etc. Jim's wife Dorothy is a stewardess on that flight!!! She goes San Fran to Newark to HK to Newark to San Fran. Pretty wild!!

Update: Got the word tonight that our Consulate date of 11/25 was cancelled, and rescheduled for 12/9, so we are on a two week hold. Oh well.... Probably leave the day before Turkey Day.

Brenda: Good to hear that the situation in improving....

I know the waiting and indefinite-ness has got to be nerve-wracking ... wishing you guys all the best ...
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
then that sways me further to the XT side. My Outback is due (lease) in July, and could turn it in earlier as a trade (or possibly a sale to my dad). So, waiting isn't really an option.

That would put the turbos coming in in the late fall of '04? :sigh:

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
according to the poster. And, yeah, the folks over at nabisco aren't very happy either.

  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
about going to the dark side is insurance. Mine's real cheap right now.

The XT is an IIHS favorite :-)

Next month my IMBA discount kicks in...

    -Brian
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
Brenda: Best of luck with your dad. Things sound like they're improving but I'll keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer just the same.

Patti: Missed Jeopardy! due to biz travel. Got home 2:30 am and just woke up an hour ago. Will work from home today.

Loosh: Foresters (including XTs) have been autocrossed. I am now eligible for my ACA VIP pricing but my wife is due up for a new car before I am. If she drags her feet though...

juice: Speaking of business travel ordeals and Lost in Translation, it looks as though I may finally end up having to go to Sao Paulo early next year. I'll want to talk offline with you about that some more.

Will miss chat again this week (4 in a row). Tonight is the last childbirth class so hopefully I'll have a chance to join in next week.
