head up route 23 to the highlands. check out my area, kinnelon.

i know everyone talks about high insurance rates in NJ but the property taxes are out of sight. figure about 2-3% of value each year. and homes are not cheap but you get alot more home than in CA for your buck.

Oh boy, those cookie recipes are gonna make us all glad the new WRX seats are a little wider! LOL

Great chat, Santa even joined us. For those that missed out, he was there asking what we wanted...who knows!?

Some were asking for new Subies, but I was a little more realistic and asked for a WRC Blue jacket. Or door tweeters, for either of our Subies. :o)

But I'd settle for World Peace.

    Dennis-
I was at Churrasco's on Tuesday night with customers! It was my first, but definitely not my last time there! It is a true experience. The camprianna (sp?) was pretty good. A few of those, with all that beef, and you are feeling no pain:-)

Maybe we should go there after the NY Auto show this year.

Paisan qualifies for tri-state residency for all the traveling he does.

Caipirinha = crushed lime and cachaca, poured over ice with sugar. Cachaca is alcohol made from sugar cane, basically tastes like sweet moonshine.

Designate a driver before you try even one!

    For trivia buffs:

    Caipirao = same with rum
    Caipirosca = same with vodka

yeah...good stuff...had one last week; we have some Brazilian friends form out temple, and everytime we all get together with our havura(temple friends) group, he brings his bottle of cachaca, some limes, and makes each one with loving care! My next one is New Year's eve.

Thanks for all the tips. 'Made in Indiana' worked with DH 2 years ago when I was shopping for SueBee ('02 OBW), so this wasn't an issue. I was just surprised that I didn't have to hint that Subaru was a brand that should be considered, especially with a used car -- he brought it up first! SueBee and CU's reliability ratings worked their magic, so this is HIS decision, not mine ;-).

As far as Subarus go, it is currently a seller's market right now in the lower Hudson Valley area. Dealers here are starting at Kelly Blue Book retail, which is more than $2000 higher than Edmunds retail. The 2 recent fall snowstorms followed by rain with freezing temperatures reminded many of why Subarus are such great cars to have! The local Pennysaver had about 15 Subies listed -- only one was as new as 2000, and it had 102K miles. We really needed to replace the Neon (made in Mexico), so waiting for Spring or just the right deal wasn't an option.

So I am pleased to announce that effective tomorrow morning a blue 2001 Legacy L wagon will be joining SueBee in our driveway. The car is just off lease, with mileage just under 36K. The CARFAX report showed no accidents or other problems. Hard negotiated price was close to Edmunds retail. The dealer is changing all fluids (I dropped off the Mobil 1 last night), will change brake pads, etc, if wear is above 50%, and will include a new dog/cargo guard. We're pleased.

Next question, how easy is it to add a 6 CD changer -- easy enough for me to do?

    Lyn
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Not only is Neon made in Mexico, but 17 of 18 DCX boards members are not US citizens. In my book, you can't call that an American car by any stretch of the imagination.

I added a 6CD from a WRX to our 2002 Legacy. It's not easy, but not really hard either. You need a very long phillips screw driver with a good magnetic head, that's the only special tool required.

juice - now that I considering installing a 6 CD changer, the prices appear to have skyrocketed. Are they still reasonably priced on the East coast?

Bob: Paisan's AZPInstalls garage is in Kenilworth, NJ -- but he's a native New Yorker, no doubt!

In any event, we'll make Bob an honorary member -- just send us a picture; we'll prop it up on a chair for meetings and ask it for comments whenever the subject of towing capacity comes up. LOL!

There was a 6Cd changer over in nasioc classifieds last week for a hundred bucks, there are a few in club wrx as well.

Bob- Don't make promises you can't keep! :-) Besides, if the new 05 wagon can tow as much as some of the early info implies, then you and your increased towing capacity campaign can take much of the credit for it (and rightfully so)! Likewise if the engine is a 400hp turbo diesel with 500 lb feet of torque, well we'll all have to kiss Mike's you know what :-)

Anybody catch Car Talk this week? Towards the end, a lady caller was asking for a recommendation of a truck-like vehicle. Tom and Ray were really plugging the Baja. I'm not sure the caller bit (she seemed more interested in an F-150) but the guys seemed to really like it (apparently they are test driving a turbo model).

Bob: don't give up, someone has to carry the Towing Torch! You may actually finally win the battle, if the new Leg/OB can match the X5's towing, as one goal stated.

Then you'll have the last laugh. You're not the only one who tows!

Jim: I haven't shopped in a while, but I think someone in the Forester thread said they paid just $130, which is a steal. $100 is a Holiday gift.

I've kept this quiet because I'm trying to keep a lower profile on-line. I ordered an SG-T and it arrived this week.

As my luck would have it, there was a mess up at the port with options. The car came with a rear gate bar so I haven't decided whether or not to take it. I told the dealer I would give them an answer on Monday.

The car looks really sharp, but I'm undecided. There's a pic of the bar at the bottom of this page:
    http://www.subaruparts.com/catalog/?section=431
On one hand it's functional (less fingerprints, etc.), on the other hand it clutters up the rear a little. It blends slightly with the rear bumper cover, but not as much as it blends with the dark OB in that pic (SG is PSM).

The dealer showed me the purchase order. The bar is actually an option that the Distributor adds. The dealer then goes in and deletes and adds the options to customize the order. The distributor or the port got RGB and RBC mixed up (rear gate bar, rear bumper cover).

Another order could take up to 2 months. I don't need it right away since the 85 318i with 100 pounds of sand in the rear is an "ok" snow car. :-)

Decisions! Ed, sorry to bother you during your landscaping but thanks. :-)

    -Dennis
P.S. - A new reverse gear was put in the Rex. The total for everything came out to around $10,000 (estimated). I traded it in today.
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
That's okay, I didn't really want to be doing that landscaping, anyway. A tree that borders our driveway has never fully recovered from the weekend before last's snowstorm and we had to remove some branches that were blocking our way into the garage. It wil most likely get removed entirely come spring.

You know my thoughts on the subject. If you can't live with the RGB but can wait 2 months, then don't. If you can, then enjoy your new SG-T.

    Good luck,
    Ed (SF, BDP)
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
personally i don't think it looks 'cluttered' and there's been a number of days i've wished i had one ... when it's snowing and blowing and wet (and slick) and i'm loading my school bag(s) in and out of the back of the wagon in the morning, between the schools, and at night at home it would be a nice thing to have
but that's me ... not you who will be using the car ...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You don't want it, there's no hurry, so I'd wait. Prices might even drop when the new Legacy arrives, even as it gets close.

You were smart to trade it in, it would never have been the same after that.

looks good on dark colors and certainly is functional. I personally would like it if I got into one of those but that's just me. I hate decisions like that. If it were a matter of 2 weeks it would be much easier to decide but I'm a typical American, I want instant gratification. Waiting 2 months for my new car would be too long. Good luck with the decision.

You can also use that bar to attach ski tow ropes for parking-lot snow skiers!

I guess I would probably pass on the bar, I just don't like the look (especially on a silver car). But, it would not be an easy decision for me, especially if I waited a while for the car to come in.

Too bad the bar is not silver like the racks on the XT.

    All that aside, congrats Dennis!

    Dennis,

We have one on my wife's '03 Seamist green Outback and I love it. Our '02 Outback didn't have one, and it always had hand prints on the back. I wish I had one on my '01 Forester. Good luck with the new ride.

Steve: yeah, it can get confusing. In Brazil we'd say North American, meaning US or Canadian citizen.

If you get a gate bar, check the sheet metal to make sure it wasn't dented during installation. Some DIY jobs have resulted in slight dents.

I'm still torn between the looks and functionality of it. It would be an easier decision if it were silver. My wife brought up the fingerprint thing as well. Her OB gets a lot of them.

The finance guy at the dealer also suggested the tow rope for snowboarding/sledding idea. :-D

Dave - Will do on the ride. :-)

Luckily I am too busy to worry about my purchase until after I get back from TX on Jan. 5. So I will have all the gory Legover details by then and can make up my mind. Er, maybe. I am certain it will price juuuust outside my outer budget limit, forcing me to mull it over for ages!
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Is a matter of personal preference, while it is handy, I would not want one. Good luck with the new ride Dennis.

      Cheers Pat.

    Dennis-
Couldn't you have the bar painted PSM?
Since the dealer have the car, instead of having a Forester sitting in their lot awaiting a another buyer, maybe they'll paint it for you just to get it sold :)

    -Dave
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Actually, I thought about that. I don't know how the material of the bar would take the paint though.
There are some close-up pics on scoobymods. Do a search or go through Legacy and exterior.

To make my decision harder, the car was freshly waxed and sitting in front of the showroom entrance!

    -Dennis
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
This is radical suggestion, but I have heard of it being done, since it was their screwup would they be willing to switch tailgates from another vehicle?

      Cheers Pat.
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Ed suggested that. When I mentioned it to my salemsman, he said the different serial numbers could lead to problems down the road.

Maybe I'll just take the silver/silver STi on their lot instead. :-)

    -Dennis
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
Here's a thought: Rather than having the bar painted silver, you could get it powdercoated. Then you'd have a color more acceptable to you as well as a more durable finish.

    Ed
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    that's a good idea :)

    -Dave
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Yeah, I bet you could get that part powdercoated silver very easily. I know a shop in NC that does wheels for $50 per, so it would probably be $20-30 for a piece like the bar. Bet there are a lot of shops that powdercoat in NJ.

    Craig
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Didn't think of that! Yeah, I recall a couple of recent posts in nabisco's tri-state forum re NJ powdercoaters.

    -Dennis
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
I think your salesman is full of BS I do not think there is a serial number on body parts per SE. And yes powder coating is a viable option

      Cheers Pat.
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
My friend had a problem with the hood fading on his few month old 2001 Accord. After a tech showed him how to find the VIN (or serial number) on the hood, he discovered that the hood's number didn't match the rest of the car.

He ended up making the dealer swap the car.
I trust that these guys wouldn't BS me. Can't say that about too many dealers.

    -Dennis
  • dcm61dcm61 Member Posts: 1,567
My '03 OBW has VIN stickers on the rear hatch (top inside above the left hinge) and on the bottom of all 4 doors. Didn't check the hood but I'm sure there's one there too.

    DaveM

P.S. Must be a USA only thing as Pat would have noticed them when he was waxing the door bottoms. :) (see Cleaning Interior & Exterior Surfaces)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm not sure the gate bar is sturdy enough to tow snowboarders. Isn't it just bolted to the sheet metal?

Yeah, Dave, I have a real problem with wax build-up on all the hidden VIN numbers on those panels, LOL.

    G'day

Not sure whether its made it to America yet but Subarus sold around the rest of the world have hidden data dots sprayed through the paintwork over the whole car. Its a pretty effective scurity technique for preventing car rebirthing but makes swapping a panel a no-no.

Personally, I think the bar looks good and practical

    Cheers

Hi Crew- Well guess what? I gave myself an early Christmas present by pulling the trigger on the purchase of a new silver 04 Forester XT MT. What can I say? I took another test drive, this time by myself in a big empty civic center parking lot :-) and I couldn’t get the grin off my face. I had it narrowed down to either silver or black but decided that although I usually prefer black (masochist that I am), the gold flakes in the “Java Black” just didn’t do anything for me. The silver also came with pretty much all the options I wanted: cabin air filter, auto-dimming mirror/compass, cargo tray, splash guards, arm rest extension, cargo net, bumper cover and security system upgrade. The only thing it didn’t have was the tow hitch for my bike-rack (which I’ll add later).

Now for something that’s totally out of character for me, I ordered after-market leather! Why you ask? Well I guess I wanted my Forester to be a little bit different and upscale. The dealer had a couple on the lot that they’d added leather to and those looked great so I decided to splurge. I picked a two-tone pattern that almost perfectly matches the interior color scheme (with perforated lighter colored inserts). The installer uses Katskin leather on all surfaces (not just seating) and I’m supposedly getting it at dealer cost ($1,200 - is that reasonable?) and it will be covered under the 3/36 warranty. Once I get it back, I’ll take some pictures and post them but it should look great.

Oh and I’ve no worries about the turbo being abused by someone else as it had 19 miles on the odo at delivery with 14 of those put on by me during test drives. However, I’m afraid that keeping it under 4k rpm for the break-in period is mission impossible. It literally only takes a second to pass 4k in first gear!

Speaking of break-in, one of the reasons I bought now is because I’m driving to western NC for the holidays and plan to put that turbo to use on a couple of long uphill hwy climbs that my previous Forester had difficulty climbing in 5th. I’m taking the back way there so I’ll have plenty of opportunity to vary the revs, check out some twisties, and hopefully enjoy some snow-covered scenery along the way.

Now on the subject of mods, I don’t see much reason to vary too far from stock given the XT’s already excellent setup but tightening the suspension a little seems to be in order. A bigger rear anti-sway bar is a given. How about a strut tower brace? Do they have those yet for the new model? I’m also considering a plus-one tire upgrade and the short-throw shifter from the WRX but want to get the feel of the stock components first.

FYI: The dealership was Subaru of Gwinnett (metro Atlanta county) and they have well over 100 Foresters on the lot. Oh yeah, the dealer adds another 9k to the factory warranty. Also, parked out front is an XT STi that they’ve created by adding 17” WRX rims and tires, a $3k custom turbo-back exhaust, fully adjustable coilover suspension and some tweaking under the hood. They also plan to upgrade the brakes and add a WRX STi turbo kit. They’ve already raced it a couple of times in regional autocross events and won one. It’s a pretty sweet ride and with the custom exhaust, sounds awesome too! To top it off the staff gets to use it to run errands (talk about perks).

    -Frank P.

    P.S. Loosh- You’re up!

Good choice on the color and tranny! :-)

I can't remember if they have strut tower brace yet (need to work it around the ic). Try a search on nabisco. I've seen pics of Gwinnett's car and it looks great. Did you speak to Porter while you were there? He's the one that modded that car.

I'm 98% leaning toward taking the car with the rear gate bar and having it powdercoated.

juice - The snowboard thing was a joke. ;-)
