Legacy = A6, Impreza = A4. My only experience being shopping with a friend who was looking at both A4s and A6s. The A4 was smaller than the Impreza, IMHO. Maybe it's the amount of contenting that makes it feels smaller, but I literally couldn't sit in the back seat of the A4, with the front seat halfway to all the way forward, and I'm only 6'1". Imprezas seem bigger than that to me. My friend ended up going with the A6 2.7 twin turbo (bi turbo, I guess) based on my moaning and groaning from the A4 back seat test fit and some other reasons. Hope this helps. I long for the day I can take my $26k Legacy turbo over to his house and show him how it beats his $46k Audi in every way. :)

Back in 2000, the A6 was only available with auto tranny. That (and the price) took it off my short list. The A4 came off the list due to the back seat knee room.

That left the Passat 4-motion (vapor car - talked about but didn't materialize until much later) and the Legacy.

I figure a Passat would have cost about $6-8k more than my Legacy. It might have been a difficult decision if the Passat were available back then. As it is, it's a 90+% probability that my next AWD car will be a Subie.

However, I am concerned about Subaru going "upmarket" to become a premium make. (See post 5768 in "Cafe".)

    Cool present, Bruce.

My son is just 19 months now, still too young, but he'll get one of those soon enough. ;-)

Bob did meet up with DCDouglas, I spoke to him while they were at the DC auto show. I couldn't make it since my nanny was off, so I may go next week.

A6 is bigger and costlier than any Subie.

FWIW, the torsen AWD in Audis can only send up to 67% of power to either axle, while Subies are actually more flexible than that. VTD can even send 100% to either axle.

The 05 Legacy (to be intro'ed at the Detroit show shortly and for sale in the spring) will probably stand up very well against the premium makes like Audi. Right now, the current Legacy would look frumpy next to any Audi. Based on all the info we've seen, the 05 Legacy is going to be a class act, and should definitely push Subaru in a new direction (similar to the upscale direction VW has been moving in) but I think the prices will continue to be very good.

    I got a sister for xmas! :)

She'll be an interesting roommate. Other than that, pretty much nothing going on. My family tends to be more about just getting together than spending mass quantities on each other-- which is good, I think.

Well, my wife did get me that iPod that I've been wanting all along. So now I'm upgrading my PC to Win XP so I can use iTunes. :-)

But the best gift this year was having our baby daughter at the center of attention with her grandparents. It's just amazing how one baby can just light up everyone's spirits. It felt so good being with family.

Erina also came down with her first big cold. She ran a fever of about 104 with coughing and a runny nose. We lost quite a bit of sleep for two nights as she didn't want to be put down alone. It's amazing how much worry a simple cold can cause. Well, she's all better now although she is generating some major snot from her tiny nose!

Hope Erina gets better soon! Which size iPod did you get? What did you think about the unboxing experience? I really love the way they package the iPod -- the box itself is cool.

Speaking of the STi, have you guys checked out the tread (or lack thereof) on its tires? It's hard to believe that they're street-legal. For sure I wouldn't want to be driving in the rain with them!

  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
probably ok in the rain, but not not not for the snow.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Loosh- Super sticky for sure. But there's little in the way of a tread pattern. They're basically racing flats with a couple of wide grooves cut into them.

Yeah I can verify thy are bad in snow. Can't drive a block in a dusting. I've been in an STi in snow on the stockers...

Colin: absolutely, gotta do your part to boost the economy.

Been there, Ken, kids actually can withstand much higher temps than adults can. Still, 104 is pretty high! Whew.

Lucky got an oil change yesterday, first day over 60 degrees in ages. Sandy got those wipers installed plus all fluids topped off. Gotta gets those mats installed.

Trico teflon wipers are only so-so, no better than any other wiper I've used. Costco had them so we got some for the Forester and the Miata. Despite the teflon, they still streak, and the outer edges don't come in full contact towards the lower passenger side of the windshield. Oh, well.

I'm not sure what his time table is for getting a new vehicle. I did suggest checking out the 05 Legacy at the cars show this year. I'll also pass along some of the info gathered here.

Kids illnesses really put the 'fear of god' into you. Few things are more scary. Glad to hear she is better.

The holiday's have been 'Annie-centric' here as well. My parents, then Beth's family, with my sister's clan later this week.

We tried toasting the occasion with some old bottles of Champagne left to me by my uncle, but unfortunately not stored properly. Dom Perignon (sp?) vintage 1980, and something else - all bad.
    Oh, well....

Stay safe on New Years, everyone...

I decided that the rear gate bar wasn't that bad and picked it up last Friday!

Frank's review on the XT board is spot on what I would say, except that I have a rattle/buzz at 3.5K> rpm's. :disco:
Not really sure if it's inside or out, but a loose turbo heat shield (read that on the XT board) sounds plausible.

There's no replacement for displacement. :-)
This engine should not be put in the WRX. Too many crazy kids running around with the 2.0 as it is.

Met up with Ed for lunch on the day I picked it up.

Congrats Dennis! Time to update the profile!

My XT Envy is reaching new heights. Now that 2 Crew long-time regulars, friends that I've met in person, have them, I'm entering Envy Stage II, elevated temperature, shaky hands, lack of focus.

You think I could convince my wife a new XT would technically be medicinal, i.e. a cure to this? ;-)

Dennis- I met Jason Porter this morning when I dropped off the FXT at the dealer's. He's a nice enough fellow alright and seemed very knowledgeable in all things Subaru. His only criticism of the FXT was excessive body roll in turns but he’s confident that front and rear anti-sway bars will easily correct that.

Congatulations, did you decide anything about the gate bar? are you going to leave it as is or have it powder coated?

       Cheers Pat.

Still undecided about what to do. It matches the rear bumper cover since they're both black. It also appears to already be powdercoated, so I don't know what kind of problems that might present.

I de-badged the C-pillar AWD's and I'm still contemplating what to do with the rear. It's a little too busy for my tastes. I will try to snap some pics this weekend.

Craig -- I got the 20Gb model. Actually, my wife originally got me the 10Gb but then realized you get double the storage capacity for the same price of buying the case, crade and remote and did a quick switcharoo. :-)

Oh and the packaging and presentation are just amazing! I seriously just sat there and admired the packaging for about an hour before even getting to the iPod itself. Very, very chic. It just oozes coolness.

I just finished updating to Win XP so I'll shortly be installing iTunes and will be on my merry way!

Any accessories you recommend? I need a car kit and I've heard that the cassette adapters work better than the FM transmitters.

Dennis- Yeah I noticed that Subaru switched from AWD stickers on the side windows to badges on the C pillars. Not sure if I'm gonna leave em or not.

Ken if you go to Honda's site for the Element and check out the Quicktimes you'll see a girl plugging one into the the audio jack and power socket located in the package self area. OK so I guess that an Element is a bit of an expensive accessory and this is a Subaru forum. My favorite accessory is my Apple iBook G4 laptop that I sync mine to. Actually the only accessory I am contemplating is an extra sync cable I can leave plugged into the powerbrick so I don't have to switch the one I have back and forth between computer and powerbrick. One thing I do with mine is plug it into the car stereo. Aiwa has a mini stereo jack built into most models so my '92 Toyota truck is more pod friendly than my WRX. I actually bought the model of Aiwa a year before I got the pod with that in mind. It is a $160 CD deck with the aux jack and MP3 playback.

About ten of those Taxis hit the streets in Ottawa a couple of months ago, they run about $80000CDN a pop.Thats right no misprint $80000.

...but I recall reading they would be in the mid $30's. The mileage alone might mkae that up pretty quick. *shrug* I dunno, I just thought it was cool.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
I agree that cassette adapters are better than FM modulators, especially if you can tuck-in or conceal the wiring like I did on my WRX. There is a company preparing an iPod link that will tie into the CD changer input on many Subaru radios, and that will be the best bet eventually (or hopefully someone on the other forum will figure out which pins to tap into).

The Belkin auto-kit can power the iPod in the car and make the audio connection (it uses the dock connector on the bottom). It plugs into the 12V lighter, but I actually wired a spare 12V outlet in the glove box and hid it there. That and a Sony cassette adapter do the trick for me.

I can't think of any other accessories, but definitely give the online music store a try -- I think that's one of the best add-ons, and is great for diversifying your music collection at a mere $0.99 a pop (or less)!

    Have fun!

    G'day

They are the most extraordinary vehicles. The design requirements for a London Taxis create a truly special vehicle but one uniquely adapted for their native environment. Outside of London, they do not work well and I cannot think of another city where they would be appropriate.

However, I do harbour wonderful memories of travelling in them. One of the world's really great trips was my regular commute from Paddington, Marble Arch, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill, Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Admiralty Arch, Trafalgar Square, (past Nelson's Column), Northumberland Avenue, Victoria Embankment, Monument and on to Lloyds (where my office was located). Worth paying for a cab any day, paricularly when it's on expenses.

    But, Baltimore?

    Cheers

What a nasty way to start the year! Because of the variance in my children's ages, I've seen how the Dr's have adjusted their stance on fevers first hand. With my eldest, it was get that fever down right away. Now, with my youngest, they want the fever to not be treated (as long as it's tolerated). It makes sense that it is the bodys way to kill the virus, but it's so hard to watch the misery it causes.

Please give her a snuggle for me!

are you struggling through the break-in period (like I am)? It's so hard to "behave" in this car. I really enjoyed taking my treck to my in-laws on Christmas eve. I got to put close to 200 miles on it over Christmas and loved it even more. I can honestly state that this is my favorite test vehicle so far. I loved the WRX, but it didn't have the room I needed. The STi was a blast, but again, space was an issue. I'm loving my job again!

If I'm gonna cash in all my "honey-do" credits, it'll be for an XT 5 speed with the Premium Package, like our neighbors up north get. So I'll have to wait for that, at least.

By the time that is offered (MY2005?), I hope to at least drive the new Legacy and see the 7 seater concept. So I'll have a better idea of which I prefer.

To be honest, I'm perfectly happy with Sandy. It's the wife that is putting pressure on for us to get a bigger vehicle, and the XT wouldn't address that concern. The new SUV would. The new Legacy/Outback might.

I guess my needs don't match up with my likes at this phase in my life. See the sacrifices parents make? My kids had better keep in touch with me after college! LOL

    G'day

It's funny how kids particularly pick up a whole raft of bugs when they move to a new country (or even locality). I believe it's a result of them having acquired resistance to one group of bugs where they formerly lived and a slightly different population prevailing in the new spot. the stress of upheaval also has its effect.

Each time we have moved, the kids have copped every bug that went by for the first winter and then returned to normal health the following year.

The fever thing is a bit frightening when their babies, particularly the exciting moments when the temperature spikes. As sure as you call the doctor out, the kid will return to normal temperature in the hour and be bouncing around by the time the doctor calls! with experience, we decided the best technique was to leave it until the temperature reached 104 and then stand under a cool shower with the kid if things got way out of hand. Given the fever is the bodies defense mechanism to an infection, there is no way you want to get in the way of the body doing its own diesease fighting.

Ah, the pleasures of having babies!

And to keep it on the automotive theme, have you ever noticed that a kid always vomits on a new car's upholstery as its christening present. The car never feels really new after that moment?

    Cheers

My first Subaru was an '83 Hatchback. I loved that car. My now husband (then someone I was dating) picked up my son (who was 7 at the time) from school for the first time. He was a bit nervous having a child in a car for the first time plus he was driving my new car for the first time. Right in the middle of a busy intersection, Adam told Ken that he wasn't feeling well and proceeded to throw up all over the back of the seat and Ken's head. And he still married me!!!
