Greg: Carmel, NY has a resevoir nearby though, right? We used to have a family friend there and we visited quite often when I was a child. Hog's Breath Inn -- we stayed very close to it.

juice: Bring the family and we'll go to the aquarium. It's just phenomenal for kids!

So, no sight of my GT wagon yet. I keep calling and bugging the dealer but the delivery truck hasn't dropped it off yet.

The scheduled delivery is the week of July 12th so it's still early, but my dealer instilled some hope in me two weeks ago when SOA faxed over my vehicle VIN. Usually, my dealer said, that means the car comes within a week.

I guess SOA is just trying to fill all the backlog!

    G'day

The aquarium is cool but for real style, check out the Sea Otters all around the coast around Monterey and right down to San Luis Obispo. I recall one very relaxed otter right in the boat harbour at Monterey, kicked back with a clam on his tummy delicately opening it with the rock taken from the pouch under his forearm. Now there's an animal who knows how to live!

I gave my wife sparkly ice for our 20th last week:

    link

They have these critters called free range otters where we were paddling too :-)

While in AK we also got to meet the '03 Outback that replaced our '97 and put our hold request on it for 2013.

Cades Cove in the Smokies was a nice proposal spot.

with him while I was at work. I came home and was told to take a seat on the living room sofa. I did as instructed and they both came out (hand in hand - Adam was 5 years old) and the both got on their knees and asked me to marry them. I cried for a good 1/2 hour, confusing the heck out of my son. Needless to say - 20 years later and Adam is now also engaged - it was a good call to say yes!

you are still willing to hang out with us here. We'd be lost without your insight! Besides, if you hang around, we may be able to sway you back over! I hope you have many safe and happy miles in it, but I'm not buying that your autocross days are behind you. The lure is in your blood.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
On the record, I'd never autocross my Evo. I can't risk Mitsubishi voiding the warranty, which I do value.

Operating purely in the theoretical world... um, yeah maybe I'd be tempted every now and then. It was pretty tough getting the Subaru Challenge emails for this weekend's Kansas City event! :)

My daughter now has a pet frog. Toad? I'm not even sure. It's hilarious. We found it at the beach.

Wait until Colin has kids, he'll be running to buy the new seater. ;-)

The Fence is shaking. Patti not only greased it up, she took a chain saw and flat cut half of it down. I think someone is falling off again...

Toads? You want toads? We've got tons of them! At last count our basement window well by our front patio had at least a dozen toads in there. That is until the snakes get them (we've got tons of them too).

Ed is the one making the fence lighter way to go ED. Now that I have a lighter moment to notice what is going on around me.

They are really big down here on huge Chrome rims, 19" and 20" seem to be the going size have even seen small cars with these huge things on them. needless to say sidewalls on the tires are about non existant.

Must feel like you are riding a buggy with solid tires. Have not seen too many Subies, but amazingly I have seen no fewer than 4 STI's all on base, also saw a couple of regular WRXs.

The most stupid looking thing I have seen is a dual wheel Chev 4 door truck that was slammed, it had to be riding about 4 inchs off the ground the wheels were half hidden in the wheelwells.

I wanted to get on the chat last night but the computer we have is still not Co-operating,

     Cheers Pat.

Rob: we might be by ourselves pretty soon. The Fence is getting lonely!

Well, it just hit the fan for Honda. The CR-V engine fires are all over the news, #1 e-mailed article in the Washington Post, top story in CNN and Yahoo. CR was quoted in the article so I bet they'll publish something about it, too.

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1895&ncid- =1895&e=5&u=/nm/20040709/us_nm/autos_honda_fires_dc

    http://money.cnn.com/2004/07/09/news/international/honda_fires.re- ut/index.htm?cnn=yes

This happened to one Town Hall member, she sued Honda and won double her damages in court. Honda is appealing.

Man, where is Hondabro now, Ken? ;-)

I'm on the fence until there is a 5/6 speed H6 Outback that uses regular gas. Now that I'm retired and 91 octane being 20 cents a gallon more than regular (87 octane) I need to watch the $$. Plus I need the $$ for skiing since I've retired from the ski patrol.

You can afford a $30k plus vehicle but not the extra $150 per year in fuel costs? Don't make Colin break out his calculator, it'll get ugly! ;-)

Just get the base Outback, 23/28 is extremely efficient and the engine should feel fine coupled to a manual.

C&D's last Legacy L 5 speed hit 0-60 in 8.8 seconds. The new one gained 3hp and lost 180 lbs, too.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
Hmm, I don't know that there ever will be an H6 Outback with a 5 or 6 speed manual. I was hoping the next Legacy GT would be that, also, but having driven a 2.5 turbo I'd say they made a good choice.

Ken - your correct. Carmel, NY and all of Putnam county and upper Westchester has reservoirs all over supplying NYC. It is great for bicyclists - Tour de Putnam end of August.

I proposed to my wife on Coronado beach in Ca.

at sunset. Very scenic spot overlooking Ottawa and the valley. We used to go riding up there all the time, and sometimes just drive up to see the sunset. She grabbed the ring case, threw her arms around me, and bobbled the ring. I was terrified it was going to fly over the wall and down the cliff!

From the age of 8 thru 15. we used to spend our summers at a small apt house on Lake Mahopac...what a great place to grow up during those years. I learned to swim there, drive a boat, play spin the bottle (yes, my first kiss was in Mahopac, her name was Mindy). There were a bunch of us kids from two buildings that all used to hang out. The old Good Humor truck would ring its bell and all the kids would come running and line up...my favorite was Chocolate Eclair. On Fridays, everyone looked forward to having their fathers come up from NYC after a week of work. There was a great place for ice cream and penny candy called Ericson's, a pizza place on Route 6 called The Dugout. Our friends had boats, and we'd go out to the islands in the middle of the lake where there was one of those hanging ropes you could swing on and drop into the water. We all used to go to the drive in after stopping off at the A&W and getting mommaburgers, poppaburgers, and lots of rootbeer. There was the Mahopac Volunteer Firemen's fair every year down the hill on Route 6. We collectively had a turtle named (of course) Myrtle. And we had tournaments of The Game of Life that would go on for hours...I won once with 17 kids packed into that little plastic car and a couple of million dollars...as we got older, boredom set in and we all learned canasta and mah jong (yep, the guys also). It was such an innocent time, as it well should be; after all it was summertime.
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
Serge: I live in Mahopac. The fireman's parade was last night with the start of the yearly fair. I had a heck of a time trying to make my way around all the roadblocks to get to the gym (which is located on the lake). I think, however, the lake you knew and what it is today is a little different. Sounds great though. BTW- we live in the Lake Casse area.

I'm sure it is so much different...back then, most of the town was owned by the DeSpain family...docks, land, buildings...they lived out on the point. Are any of those places I mentioned still around? There also used to be a diner (Mahopac Diner?) in town that used to cut the hot dogs in half and grill them...I drool still when I think of them. We lived on Lake Shore Drive , up the hill from the Firehouse and across from the small hospital.

Serge: that might have been Bob H. in that ice cream truck. :-)

Forgive me my ignorance (and I have a lot!) I've been bouncing around reading some of the other Subaru discussions- can someone give me the lowdown on what gets discussed where? I'm starting to develop nerves wondering if I'm posting in the right discussion! There's this one, the 'cafe', the 2005 legacy/outback, and a bunch of others I haven't even gotten to yet! I see Patti has her own discussion- is that to complain? (poor Patti :-(! )

Anyway, just learning to cope. I'll get straightened out sooner or later (probably later though)

I proposed to my wife on our first date. I wanted her to know I was serious. I did get her attention! Of course it helped that we were friends for many years before we started dating, and after 11 years we still are best of friends!

    Have a good weekend everyone.
BTW, I still love my GT limited MT. Now i've got to teach my wife to drive it. Any suggestions on teaching someone how to drive stick? (without ruining my new car?)

Start on a decent but not too steep of an incline. It makes the transition from idle to in-gear that much easier, resulting in less bucking, and quicker confidence.

    My 2 cents.

    Jim
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Down hill, I think you mean.

    Yep, much easier.

    3 rules of thumb:

    * always start in 1st
    * take 90 degree turns in 2nd
    * take highway ramps in 3rd

Those generally apply nicely and novices tend to have trouble determining what gear to be in.

tom: this thread is for the Crew members, you and I, what's going on in our lives and how that relates to our Subies. Road trips, that type of stuff.

The following is a fairly comprehensive list of Subaru Crew topics but first you should know that there are no written guidelines of what gets posted where. Posts can and frequently do veer way off topic. However, the Crew is pretty good at self-policing. There's only one topic that is unofficially taboo and that's politics.

Cafe - For when you want to discuss a topic that's not Subaru related (but frequently still auto related)

Meet the Members - For discussing generic Subaru subjects and for getting to know fellow Crew members

Events - For planning Subaru related events

Future Models - Self-explanatory (once a model hits the showroom floor it ceases to be a "future model")

Problems & Solutions - Post a problem and more often than not someone here will have a solution

Cleaning Interior & Exterior - Questions, suggestions and tips on how to achieve the best results

Care & Maintenance - See above

Photo Gallery - You can post a photo in any topic but if you're posting large ones or multiple ones then you're encouraged to post them here as a courtesy to those Crew members who don't have high-speed Internet connections.

Suggestions for Subaru - As the title implies, you can post suggestions for changes you'd like to see in future models. This topic is monitored by SOA and suggestions forwarded to the product planning dept.

    2005+ Legacy/Outback - For model specific posts & questions

Official SOA Presence - If you feel you need help resolving an issue or have a technical question that you'd like answered. Patti will do her best to help but she basically has to monitor this topic in her spare time so it can sometimes take a while to get a response.

Feel free to skim thru some of the posts in one or more of the above topics to get a better feel for what gets posted. If you haven't figured it out yet, the Subaru Crew is probably the most active forum on Edmunds.

    Enjoy!

don't refresh after you post. :)

advice for teaching someone to drive a manual transmission... the quick quick version.

    1. find an empty parking lot with enough room to get into 2nd gear or even 3rd so you can practice downshifting.

    2. teach the friction point FIRST. put the car in gear and let up the clutch slowly with NO throttle input whatsoever and learn where it starts to engage. practice it *a lot* before even trying to take off, and then after every stall or other stopping point.

    3. make sure to watch for feet hovering over the clutch. use it and get away from it.

the rest is pretty obvious but those are some good tips that can be overlooked.

I'm not sure I'm that brave! No matter how good a pupil, there's bound to be some grinding of gears ;-) And you may be putting that "friendship" to test since learning to drive a MT is frequently stressful. In fact you've got three stress factors:

    1. Teaching somone to drive a MT
    2. Teaching somone to drive YOUR MT
    3. Teaching somone to drive YOUR BRAND NEW MT

    Good luck!

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
bah. a brand new car is ideally suited to learn on, at least you know for sure that the synchros and clutch were fine before you started. LOL

however if there is any realistic concern about this that I would have, it would be that AWD vehicles are hard to learn on in general because there is a lot of driveline lash. they're not forgiving at all of poor technique.

a 5 speed mid 90s civic or corolla would be ideal if I had to pick something.

I have a rule that I hold to very firmly.

NEVER teach your wife how to do anything!
I'm not kidding here. Skiing, golf, mountain biking, I always signed her up for formal lessons. It's also my best marriage advice given recent discussions. Maybe I should add that the only thing worse is teaching your husband something.
Find out if she has a friend who drives MT - that would be the best.

Amen to that! I attempted to teach my wife to drive my 92 Loyale wagon with the stick. My wife got out of the car and walked home! Next car was an automatic. Problem solved.

Thanks for all of the input. If I summarize everyone's advice, I think what I need to find is a huge gently sloping parking lot and a good friend with an old honda who's willing to teach my wife. And stay away from downtown (thanks Paul- ;-) )

I must confess it seemed like a good idea at the time I was buying the car- mostly because I didn't want an auto. I'll tell you all how it goes. My wife's very motivated to learn, so maybe it'll all work out!

If not, anyone in the market for a very slightly used MT legacy GT Lim sedan? :-)!

actually most of you know 'some' of this story and for those 'not interested' you can just skip this post ...

I am a 50 year old (but NOT OLD in body, mind, or spirit) mother of 3 daughters and grandmother of 4 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. After a 26 year marriage ended (my choice, but not easy), I met a man online who lived in South Bend and I lived in Texas. I moved here 4 years ago, and 2 years ago we bought a house together, so the rings/marriage are more of a 'formality' in this case ... (sorry if I've stepped on moral toes). We both had long marriages, and the relationship we have shared has been better than either of us has experienced before in marriage.

We have been talking marriage for awhile, and both shopping/looking for awhile. I had difficulty finding anything I liked, but did not want to go the custom-made route. We were even looking in the pawn shops! We had a new store open in town a few weeks ago, and when I went to look I found a lot I liked plus good pricing, so we went in on the 4th when he had some time off to look. This particular ring HE got out of the case and I had avoided that case as it had the specially "excellent" diamonds in cut and quality. I narrowed my selection to 3 and then he chose ... this one... and I love it!

I also made HIM pick one out, and I 'could' post a pic of it from the store's online photos, but they don't have one exactly like his so I may try to get a digital pic of it to post... so yes, guys, HE has a diamond ring also!

And how is this car-related? When I moved to South Bend I had a '93 Oldsmobile with over 150,000 miles on it and needed a new car that would get me around in the snow. That's when I bought the 2001 Subaru Outback that also brought me to you guys! (And the daughter is still driving the Oldsmobile with over 180,000 miles on it !)
