..ok, so it just won't run on IE for some reason, but I got in through Netscape. Took forever waiting for all that Flash to load. Would it have killed them to put some interior shots? I hated the old one but...wow. Now I yearn for the old one. Flying kayaks don't make up for poor information organization. I'm no dummy ( I don't think, anyway) but I ran out of patience trying to find colors and interiors. There were a couple buttons that looked promising, but I'd already waited through buckets of flash, and knew I could get the skinny off Edmunds in half the time!

I tried it using Netscape 4.76 with Shockwave Flash 5.0 r41 (according to About|About Plugins from the menubar). It didn't ask me to download the player. Seemed to work fine for me.

I also tried IE 5.5 sp1 and it worked too.

I can't say that I condone street racing, but it was an interesting (and true, apparently) story nonetheless.

Cool story! I think (from what I've read) that the WRX is very tame out of the box (stock). Imagine what a couple of tweaks here and there would do? That A4 would've been the one following the WRX at the line.

Are they geared similarly? Both 17" wheels?

    LOL Paul!

Loosh, Yes, the SoA site is just sorry. I don't mind Flash multimedia iff* it simplifies the user experience. I've yet to find a site that accomplishes that.

    For shame, Subaru, for shame.

Leagacys? Is that a secret new model I haven't heard of yet? ;-)

Interesting read, but I'd like to see apples-to-apples, either stock vs. stock, or slammed vs. slammed. He admits his costs more to begin with, but throw in the cost of the mods and you're talking serious cash. All that for maybe one car length?

    Picture of flying WRX...

I saw a photograph of airborne WRX from a rally at a dealership. They put "The beauty of All-wheel Drive" slogan underneath. Do you really need AWD while in the air ? :-)

One thing I noticed was that rally WRX had rather narrow and tall tires, and wheels were definitely not BBS and most likely 16" not 17". Is it typical for rallyspecs to have tall and narrow tires? I guess, they may need these tires to better "bite" into the ground on turns?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They use various sizes, depending on the road surface. But many are not even as wide as stock, and even 15" wheels are used in some stages.

    Kate-

Those are the tires used for snow and ice stages. They are narrow for the purpose of sinking and slicing through the stuff and grabbing hard terrain underneath. Additionally, they are studded. You'll see nice fat racing tires on the same car for paved stages, and something in the middle for gravel/dirt stages.

    GM Credit Card Promotional

I've got that "you're pre-approved" promotional for the GM credit card. 5% cashback to buy or lease a new GM vehicle. The ad also said I can get an up to $3000 discount towards purchasing a new Aztek. Tempting, very tempting...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Combine that with the $1000 rebate and the free camo package and you're sitting pretty (ugly). ;-)

I saw some studded tires at a junkyard once, and it's pretty wild. I'm sure those things would really tear up paved roads.

Check out the Photo Gallery. I added a photo of my cousin's 99 Outback.

Big deal, right? Wrong. It shows the rear seat - with all 3 kids inside! She absolutely refuses to drive a minivan!

Their 2nd vehicle is a work-provided pickup, so the Outback hauls the kids all over the place, all the time.

    Subaru Community Page

There are a few changes and additions yet to be made, but let us know what you think.

I'll be adding a link to the Subaru Crew main page.

Also...I think it comes from ateixeira's photo album? It would be much appreciated if your photo on the main page (Subaru Crew at the Philly show) could be resized. For those with slow connections, the loading time is very long. If it could be 1/3 to 1/2 the size...it would be great! Please let me know if this is possible.

Yes, I like the page. I'm making it my new home page, actually.

I can resize that photo. Should I e-mail it to you?

    -juice

PS Edit: already e-mailed to you.

Karen, It's helpful to have the top Subaru discussions and resources on the same page -- thanks! I didn't see Edmunds or Subaru links to this page; did I miss them?

It's also a convenient way to vote on new Subaru.com website format. Loosh, the closest I could find to "Flash, huh-ah, what is it good for? (absolutely nothing, say it again)" is "Do not like the new site", so I chose that.

What is the deal with my.subaru.com? I tried to get a PIN but it said my VIN was in-valid... Does it only go back to a certain year?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yep. I'm not even sure that it's available for my '98 yet.

    miksmi,

I just got the okay for linking that page today...so it may be too soon for it to be linked elsewhere on the site. The Town Hall is special, doncha know. We get first dibs. :-)

I "think" that is the plan for all the Owner's Clubs. It will take some time, though.

Look on your spring issue of Drive. My dad's '97 legacy is in there. On the Spring issue they have your VIN and Password. I of course don't get Drive since mine is an '88 so :(

Did pretty decent. Beat a worked Civic Si and a '99 Maxima.

I have a 96 Outback. I tried to get a pin number at my.subaru.com using my cars VIN number and I also got a VIN number not valid message. Then I got my spring issue of DRIVE magazine and it had my PIN number on the mailing label with my password.

    mmm forbidden donut....

    Paisan-

way to go! I can't believe you are the only one out there in a Soob.

Mike S- I think my prob is I am using IE on a Mac. What a surprise, more junk from Microsoft. I think I might have a heart attack and die from that surprise. I opened the site using netscape without incident. Well, if you discount the fact that the site is gibberish and silly. We just ended up driving out to Valley and picking up a 2002 Impreza booklet to get what we needed. Round trip was probably faster than finding it all on that site.

Valley had a new RS..nice! Has STi fog light covers!!

Karen- Thanks for all your efforts!

Mike- Looks like your spare still sticks out the farthest so you'll still be in trouble if you get rear ended by a pole :-)

    -Frank P.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Nah, the bar is actually parrallel with the tire (doesn't look that way in pic) also in the pic the bar is in the most pushed in position, I now have it in the outter slot of the tounge, and it sticks out about 1" further. It's mostly for in parking lot/parrallel parking situations where, people like to bump and grind their way into spots. Also some of the off-road guys are gonna use it as a hi-lift jacking position.

Quick everyone! I'm in need of an intervention! A WRX finally showed up at the local dealer and I'm in serious need of several good reasons why I don't need to visit there any time soon. Help me....

After I was badly rear-ended in my Forester, I kept on thinking to set up some protection bars on the back... Most of the damage my Forester sustained came from the fact that it was rear-ended by a much taller vehicle (Bronco SUV). If was rear-ended by a normal car, the bumper would have absorbed most of the impact. Unless there is a law that requires car-height bumpers on everything on the road, I don't know how one can protect a lower vehicle from the impact of the now-popular monsters on the road. Any ideas?
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
    Kate- Lift kit? :-)
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
Seriously, I was thinking of a lift kit, to jack my Forester up 2" or so. Not only to match up to the Excursion bumper, but mostly for off-roading adventures. But I've heard handling is suffering from that, and handling is one of the greatest feature in my little beast. I wonder, how much worse does the handling get, after a lift of 2"?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    Kate,
If you are interested, Matt could make a similar bar, but higher. Basically like sticking the one I have in backwards so that it sticks up instead of down? Although I'm not sure how high it could go before becoming too weak. Since mine sticks down a bit, I'm hoping that if some idiot rear ends me with a sports car, this device will prevent them from going under my car and hurting themselves.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Frank: don't you hate those miscreant poles, that stick themselves in the way like that? ;-)

Can't help you on the WRX...there is no reason not to go!

Kate: yours was an unusual case. I'm sure he hit you on purpose, or was not looking at all. Under braking, his nose would dive and he would have probably hit you level, bumper to bumper.

You can get 2" taller springs from iSR or Lovell, or even from Europe, but handling pretty much deteriorates in proportion to the height added. I would only do this if my Forester were no longer my primary ride.

    -juice

PS A buddy at work that has a '96 Outback test drove a white WRX wagon and has the fever - he's going to order one as soon as he sells his Land Cruiser.
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
Loosh, lucien2 Apr 17, 2001 5:31am [SoA] site is gibberish and silly - LOL; that's my new technical description of that site's state.

    Frank,

So far, I've tried to talk sense into Hutch and Stephen. So far, both bought WRXes and are sweating out the break-in period. To cut my losses, I'll occupy my mouth by noshing on some rally bread.

    Kate,

Would an additional 2" have been enough to match wits with the Bronco? What about an Expedition? An Aztec? (oops) See where I'm going with this? :)

No doubt, SUVs are intimidating. It's a tough call: your daily driver (Forester) has a comfortable car-like ride and a stable, low center of gravity; an SUV has greater off-road capability but truck-like ride and less stability (high COG = rollover). It's hard to argue the laws of physics. I think you made the right choice.

Rally Bread! LOL! Now I'm Hungary! ;-)

Don't you love how certain phrases are immortalized? Like "paisan-sized" and owners named "Dave".

Kate - you should take a spin in my Miata. Behind a Forester, I can take a close look at its rear differential, close to eye level! It's all relative...
