I got into chat - after a while

Graham, even though you may not buy a Subaru, we will still like you.

Tom - bummer about the ding on your GT.

    yeah, I'm proof!

well-- they at least tolerate me to the same degree. LOL

I'm not sure about that "like" stuff. ;)

Thanks Rob. If I were still in Boston I wouldn't even consider fixing it. ;-)

Hey, a friendly bloke like Graham, what's wrong with 'like' ? ;-) Colin, you're just jealous. ;-)

No chat for me last night either - yesterday afternoon Qwest 'accidentally' disconnected my DSL from my ISP (or something like that) - just back up & running within the last hour.

Juice - how do you test DSL speed?

Graham - don't be a stranger. You either, 'ghost' :)

    Cheers!

    Graham,

Will the Subaru B9X be available in your part of the world anytime soon?

Please stick around even if you do give up the Outback.

Paul, I like dslreports.com. Scroll to Tests+tools and then to speedtests. Lots of times I'll just go direct to http://sea.speakeasy.net/ though, and that server is even closer to you than me, and it's rarely busy.

was on the same PC, but on DSL. I tested and speeds are good, 1417 mbits!

mbits? Don't you mean kilo bits, as in kbps?

BTW, my cable just tested at 3359 kbps! I'll have to test another day earlier in the evening to see how much it drops with traffic.

    G'day

Well on the Edmunds front, I was not intending to leave the Subaru Crew although I am also taking a regular look at the Highlander pages.

Unfortunately Kluger seems to mean Kruger (as in the South African currency) pronounced with a Japanese accent. At least that is the running joke here. Unfortunately Hyundai have a model or trim level called Highlander registered in Australia so we get the name used in Japan.

I have to say that over the years Australia has copped some duff car names from Japan. I know I have told this story on these pages about five years ago but there seem to be few new members since then. Anyway, Nissan called one saloon the Cedric, a name with overtones of homosexuality, or at least of foppishness, to Australians. A motoring journalist suggested that car would not sell well because the name was "a bit poofy" . This did not translate easily so the interview went on:

Nissan MD: "What is poofy? I don't know the word"

    Journo: "You know, homosexual!"

MD: "You have many homosexuals in Australia?"

    Journo: "Yes!"

MD: "Well, we will well sell many cars!"

Nissan MD 1, Journo Nil in that encounter.

I have just gone and done the deal getting about 15% off the retail price and a few accessories thrown in. Not absolutely cut-throat but I believe that motor traders need to make enough profit to eat if you want them to be there next year.

The trade in price on the Outback was excellent. After five and a half years with 142,000km (say 88,000miles), I got 40% of the purchase price as a trade. This after allowing a couple of thousand for panel damage as both bumpers and one door trim are replacement jobs and there are a few typical city dents.

I'm hoping that the Kluger is as good as the Outback has been. I'll miss lots about the Subaru. The only time that I have been as sad to see a car go was my 1990 VW Golf GTi which I still kick myself for not buying off lease.

The Kluger comes in three trim levels down under and the mid range is fitted with leather, climate control air and seven seats. The only drivetrain option sold here is the 3.3 litre 6 cylinder used in the Camry and Lexus RX330 mated to a four wheel drive. It does not handle anywehere as well as the Outback but is as competent off road with less front and rear overhang, the one thing that really bugged me about the Subaru. Unfortaunately the trade off to the Kluger is far fewer spaces for storing stuff so I will have to rationalize heavily. Tamsin has just removed four large shopping bags of gear from the Outback that I will need to figure out how to refit.

    Cheers

    Graham

Delivery is hopefully in the next couple of days. I'll give an update as i get used to it.

Yeah, we sort of have Colin on rehab. :o)

Dave's right. Papa Bear told me about that site, it's great. Not sure about the units, but it's whatever they report there.

At one point my cable was hitting 3000, 2200 on a bad day. But by the end it was in the low 200s, pathetic. I figured DSL is cheaper so why pay more for service that isn't faster?

In reality most servers can't dole out information that quickly, they too are busy, so my connection is fast enough that the bottleneck is no longer on my side.

    Graham: get the hybrid.

Thanks, Steve... got 207/214k at home last night... underperforming the advertised 256, but still faster than the old 28.8.

    1075kbps down, 625 up at work :)

There's always overhead. I'm getting ~1300/800 this am and 1500 is advertised. But 45mbps is in the pipeline "any day now." Plus my ISP is rolling out VoIP soon too.

Btw, Bogus got 3 to 6 inches of new last night; I really need to replace the Outback's battery today just in case I need that AWD.

Only a trace at Lookout... and only the front side is open:

    http://www.skilookout.com/ski_snow_report.html

    Mt. Spokane is flat closed:

(click on 'Mountain Info', then pick the webcam - it's pathetic!)

Sick kid was my excuse yesterday. Might aim for Monday.

Put a new battery in my OB last week too. Got almost 5 years out of the old one.

    Cheers!

    G'day

I fancy the idea of the Hybrid but there is no news of them coming to Australia yet. Seems that US demand will soak up just about all the available production initially. Perhaps by the time I come to replace this one, there will be a decent hybrid in Australia. The Prius II is selling well, and I think there is a Honda Civic Hybrid for quite reasonable money.

    Cheers

    Hey Paul

Not looking good for skiing on this side of the hills! We're going to try Whistler in a few weeks, but last I heard it was raining there!

Oh well. There's always the drought to look forward to!

Not good over here either! Kids ski school has been canceled 2 weeks running. It's cooling off a bit, but now in a dry spell.

I tend to be optimistic despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, but there are still 2 months of winter left. :)

    Cheers!

We had a scary couple weeks of warm weather in mid January that decimated local slopes, but it has been cold or at least cool for the last two weeks. My local ski area went from 9 trails at Christmas to one trail in mid January, but they are up to 23 trails now. Pretty amazing snowmaking system they have. In fact, I watched them go from zero to full coverage on one trail while I was skiing last week. I went Friday and you'd never know it was in the 70s a few weeks ago! I just hope the seasonal weather continues.

May take a trip out to Heavenly CA or Sugarbush VT in Feb or March. With all the snow Tahoe got, I can probably ski at Heavenly in June!

    Craig

P.S. Any Mac OS X users who ski? I am developing some ski conditions/weather tracking software and can give out some freebies to the crew.

    Craig,

    I'm interested in the sw.

I vaguely remember your email ending: @xxx.net? I'm sure I know the xxx, but cannot remember if it's .net or .com

I do need the stuff before the "@".

It may take me a day or two to reply after you provide the "hint".

    Thx,

    Graham,

The Cedric makes a pretty decent taxi cab in the Asian markets. But after your post, I will never look at the car quite in the same way!

I have my account logon set to the e-mail address that I have from work. I do not have that listed as public, so if you look at my profile, there is no listed e-mail adddress. I have a 'spare' address on Yahoo that I would like to list here, so that I can accept personal e-mails without taking the chance of swamping my work address with spam. I do not see any way of listing that address without changing my main logon to that as well. Am I missing something?

To my knowledge, if you change your email address in your profile, you will need to log on with the new one.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's what I do, works for me.

Just gotta remember to read that 2nd e-mail account once in a while!

Coming home from tutoring, I have to turn left and there is a lot of traffic at that time with NO turn signal. The intersection is four lanes which narrow to two just behind where I was sitting. Often there are people turning left from the opposite direction and other cars shooting AROUND them to go straight. I'm waiting ... there is a pickup truck sitting facing me and waiting to turn left and another small car behind it ... I'm waiting to be sure the car isn't coming around, and then I turn ... a car coming at me and I never saw it ...guess my view was blocked by the cars sitting there ...

luckily she turned the wheel toward the right and into the street, I also cut as quickly as I could... my front right bumper caught her about her door doing quite a bit of damage (00 Malibu) . I ended up over the curb and in the snow (no problem). I think she skidded when she turned or we might have managed to miss one another. She ended up in the left lane facing the wrong way on the side street.

Neither of us hurt. Mine doesn't look too bad .. bumper is a little scraped, but I'll have it checked out ...

Now the 'kicker' .... she looked 'familiar' so we started talking as we exchanged info ... turns out she's a special ed teacher .. she had just left the teacher's parking lot at the school on the corner (so she wasn't in the street long before she hit me and probably another reason I didn't see her) ... we've probably had classes together at the local university ...

AND she's the special ed teacher for the kid that I had just been tutoring before coming home!

    <shakes head> ... but I wish it hadn't happened ....

Glad no one was hurt and the damage wasn't too bad. Just shake it off and keep in mind that accidents some time happen to even good drivers.

As long as nobody hurt that's the main thing. Cars can be fixed or replaced.

     Cheers Pat.

I had a left turn wreck today too - went flying off the run and took out 6 feet of willows :-)

My previous left turn wreck was back in the 70's - I pulled out on a 4 lane and didn't see the Caddy hidden behind another car. No one was hurt but the cars and my pride, and my BBQ take-away went flying all over the floor.

I haven't been fond of left turns since, but the car got fixed up nicely.

Is something in the works? Patti herself is clearly missed. But if she is no longer able to participate here, does SOA have something else in the works? I kind of resent SOA promoting/taking credit for the positives of its relationship with Crew Members and then walking away from its comittment. (That's the way I see it).
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I was in touch with Sylvia just the other day on this very matter, and Edmunds is trying to work something out, to get her back. So far no word yet, however. Also, I'm hoping to see Patti at the Philly car show on Saturday. Maybe she will have some encouraging news on her end? But that's just pure speculation on my part.

If that doesn't work, I would suggest another letter-writing campaign, like we did a couple of years ago. I think we should first see if Edmunds has any success first.

    Don't sweat it, Brenda.

Me too, I made a last-minute decision and we're going up to Philly after all. Anyone else going on Saturday?

PF_Flyer (aka Mod_Bob) is supposed to go so that'll be cool, plus Patti is trying to go.

I got the SoA invitation but those are on school nights, and past my son's bedtime. We've talked about bringing him down in the Cozy Coupe WRC in lieu of a stroller, but the logistics of that may prove difficult.

Sunday afternoon may be the best time for us, given that floor traffic shuld subside as the locals return home for their Super Bowl parties.

Brenda - glad you're okay as well.

Rumor has it a certain ghost will haunt our chat tonight!

It's a friendly ghost, though, like Casper perhaps.

Look for Philly Auto Show plans to be sorted out, also, and maybe some surprises for those going to Philly? :o)
