Hadji does shed a little bit, but it's not enough that's it a big problem. Use one of those lint rollers, that captures his fine black fur.

My bigger problem? Nose prints! They're all over the place. Plus I have tint film on the windows so I can't use Windex to clean the inside, just water. That can be a pain.

Sounds like fun, Ken. How are the roads?

Wear rubber gloves and start swiping your hands across the upholstery. The fur will collect in clumps you can pick up.

Or be prepared for some serious static shock! :P

    Hey Ken!

Sounds like a neat trip. Shanghai Motors (GM) pumps out quite a quantity of Buick Century's, and the locals think of them as the epitome of American Luxury. Nanchang was stuffed with them.

    LOL!

That didn't even occur to me. However, I've used that trick countless times after our Lab takes a ride and can't recall ever getting shocked.

Seems like their site is down. Must be no power because of the hurricane, as they're located in FL. Wonder how Serge and other FL Crew members fared?

Early Monday morning, as the hurricane was reaching it's peak, Beth's uncle (and her surrogate father after her own loss as a child) passed away. . He had fallen a day or so earlier, and the minor head injury was apparently more serious than anybody knew. They are located a few short miles down the Sawgrass from Serge, and still without power. Beth has been in contact with her aunt, and the loss and sudden loneliness is only amplified by the pitch darkness at night.

The plan was to fly the body back to NY for burial in the family plot up in the Catskills, but with Miami in ruins, everything is on hold. What a mess.....

    Brenda,

DTC, or Dossier to China, is a major milestone in the process. Congratulations to them! You have full approval from the US side, now you wait for China to respond. I hear that the cycle time for receiving the 'referal' (a tiny photo, location info and health history) is running about 8 months now, with travel maybe 2 months or so after that. It is a very long pregnancy, considering dossier prep and US approvals probably already cost them half a year.

My brother-in-law lives in Fort Myers. He is still w/out power, but the repairs he made to his home after the last hurricane through there held. The only damage this time was a lost storm door (which wouldn't have happened if he hadn't decided to take a peek outside during the height of the storm), a torn screen on the lanai, and a couple of ornamental shrubs bought the farm. Interestingly, his girlfriend's house on Sanibel was untouched and never lost power. She was very thankful as she had major damage with Ivan and had just gotten it all back together prior to this hurricane season.

Hope we hear from our Crew in Florida soon.

I have heard about the rear diff fuse for the chattering problem on the 98 outback. Where is it and is it marked? Do I just take it out and the front drives with no problem ? I have changed diff fluid and all that stuff.

    Thanks

and threatening to cause a serious rift in the family. The son living closest is now refusing to honor his father's wishes - expressed very publicly to the entire family - and has set a burial in Florida for Friday.

Their other daughter, along with Beth and I spent considerable time helping them out when they lived up here. But as they got beyond the point of being able to live alone, everyone urged them to consider assisted living in a warmer climate. They only agreed to go if it was 'temporary': that they would be buried with all of the rest of the family. Now this.... Beth is heartbroken.

As always, we very much appreciate the thoughts of the Crew.

I think we all miss her.

Perhaps SoA will reconsider and send her back to us. Hope so.

I do keep in touch and she's been well, FWIW.

Just got back in yesterday. Actually, the major cities -- Beijing and Shanghai have quite a few foreigners living there so it's not something out of the ordinary for them to see. In fact, many of them don't seem to even think twice about an American speaking fluent Mandarin. I have a friend who lives there, completely fluent in Mandarin, but totally from Ohio!

The roads there are mixed. Major streets and highways tend to be good, if not better than some of our pot-holed roads, but smaller side streets can be quite rough.

My same friend who lives there owns and drives a local Chinese car. All foreign registered vehicles get a different license plate, which according to him, makes it less likely to get pulled over by local police.

    Steve,

Sorry to hear about the loss. I hope everything turns out okay.

Buicks are still quite common, but I think other brands are quickly surpassing them in terms of luxury. In Shanghai, I saw quite a few Audis and a couple of BMWs.

Looking forward to your trip out here.

It most certainly does, one that passes a foot away from your ear at 120 mph, which was the windspeed of Wilma as it moved directly over Coral Springs. We are all fine; Dina and Michael slept thru the worst of it (those teenagers and their dogs!!). We went without power and phone service for 2 1/2 days and basically threw away a bunch of food from the fridge.
Here are some photos of our back yard...multiply this by the whole city (pop. 130,000) and you get an idea what it's like; no damage to the house though; hurricane code in South Florida is the strictest in the country.

    Steve,
our sympathies on the passing of Beth's uncle. Hopefully, all else is well after the storm.
Let us know if you are coming down.
    Guys, thanks for your thoughts.

What I found most interesting was how many huricane screws were loosened by the wind when I went to take the shutters off; I had tightened those suckers down. In the 10 years we've been here in FL, this was our first real hurricane..we were due, I guess.
Coral Springs looks naked without all its trees. You can see places you never knew existed and gas lines abound. So far, only one traffic light is working, though people are actually being polite at intersections and taking turns.

Sad to see the downed trees, beautiful Palm trees no less! :(

A couple of years back we lost power for I think 8 days, and lost a freezer full of food. That was terrible. I remeber driving up to PA, where Ed (lark6) drove me around looking for a generator, still could not find one, even out of town and beyond the effect of the storm.

This is why I've hinted that I'd like to see any hybrid that Subaru does include a generator. One that can at least power one fridge.

Is that tree in your back yard? It looks like you got some roof damage on the porch roof.

    Bob
  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
Yes, that Washingtonian Palm fell on our screen enclosure, damaging the frame; another cross member ended up in the yard and most of the screen panels were ripped to shreds by that or by the wind itself. This palm broke in half, another just toppled over, and the third is leaning towards the canal; that one will also be taken down. All of them were between 30 - 40 feet high. In another photo, the tree shown on the right-hand side, a Chinese Orchid, also sustained major branch damage. We will either trim it or take it down completeky, leaving our back yard treeless.

Serge, damage is bad could have been much worse glad everyone is safe and sound.

Wow Serge. Impressive. I can't imagine what it's like. Thank God you and your family are safe, though!

Maybe you floridians should plant trees with deeper roots? (Although we have trees falling down here in Washington all the time, even without Hurricaines!)

I'm sorry Stan, I didn't quite understand your question. This was my post a year ago when I got a flat tire and I was asking questions about the center diff with a wheel that is of different circumference. I'm assuming you have a '98 OB with a problem with the center diff?

Glad to hear everyone is safe. You guys took quite a punch. Beth's aunt is still holding down the fort in Tamarack (a few minutes south), and still without power or phone.

    OK, here's what's funny.

Audi highlighted their new AWD system that now carries a rear bias by default, like Subaru. It goes on about them being pioneers and blah, blah, blah.

VDC has had a rear bias since model year 2001. 5 years later Audi is a pioneer.

    LOL

They take a gentle poke at Subaru by calling is Asymmetrical AWD. Though they're refering to front to rear, while Subaru for the most part refers to side to side.

    -juice

PS Mercedes, BMW, and Infiniti also have rear drive biased systems
