    Brenda:

I have a very similar Kenmore range - I love the gas top w/ the electric convection oven!

This weekend, I took a 30 cu. ft. freezer that cost me five kilowatt-hours a day to run (that's $1.25 a day here!) and turned it into a smoker.

I smoked my first batch of red salmon in there last night. Wonderful! I put twelve filleted fish in it and still had room for eight more with the stock freezer racks. I need to set it up for about eight more racks in the unused space between the current racks; I could fit a full year's worth of fish (I am allowed 55 fish from the state's personal use subsistence fishery) in the thing at one time. Definitely a better use for that freezer.

Good to stop in here again, finally.

Good to have you back wes, even if only temporarily! How are the kids and the house coming along?

Just to add to what's going on at my end: my wife and I got back from Bermuda for a quick weekend get-a-way where we celebrated our 20th anniversary. Two signs that after all these years my wife understands me:
1- She was the one who spotted the 2 Subarus we saw in Bermuda - told me I'm getting slow in my old age :D . Considering there are only 64,000 people on the island with only a few cars (primarily Peugeot, Toyota, Kia, and Ford) I was surprised to see an old Justy and Legacy wagon.
2- She gave me an XBox360 as an anniversary gift. Talk about a smart girl :) .

Brenda- hope things improve work wise, and enjoy the stove!

Juice - nice picture - your kids are getting BIG!

    re: relationship stuff ....

daughter and her b/f went to chicago on the train last weekend ... 2 1/2 hour trip .. she texted at one point about some things, then texted ... can you tell we're bored? ....

DH said to text her back and tell her WE drive to Texas and often don't even turn on the radio because we always enjoy each other's company!!!

Kids are growing - fast(!), house is sitting there (have not worked on it this summer due to other projects and limited finances).

I canned the first batch of smoked fish last night - good stuff! :D

So I finally got a chance to drive on Summit Point Raceway, at an Audi event.

I met up with Bob, and we took my little brother, who is now 23.

Got to drive the new A4 V6 Quattro, plus the Benz 300 4Matic, BMW 328xi, and Lexus IS250 AWD. More about those in the Cafe...

Any how, here's a pic of the two of us.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Cool, just did that same Audi event at Autobahn Country Club a few weeks ago.

    -Brian
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Which of the sport sedans did you like best?

For me it was too close to call between the A4 and the 328xi.

I was hoping Bob would steal this beauty...
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
The new A4 seemed more responsive on the cone course, but I don't think the 328xi was far behind. We got to take the A4 on several laps on the south course at Autobahn too.

Bob could drive that for something like $1000 IIRC, not worth that IMO.

We chatted up one of the Product guys, he actually had sold Subarus not too long ago. I think he said it was $600 or so, something like that.

When we went to Vegas, you could rent an exotic for that much for a whole day, but then again you don't exactly have access to a race track.

    Yikes, two helmet heads!
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
And Bob was just getting past the last time a helmet photo of him was posted :P

Yeah, it's a disease you catch at race tracks. There's no known cure either.

Ya had to bring that up Frank... ;)

Should have told me, I would have taken a day off and come down with you guys.

I probably would have gotten tossed out for trying to lead one of the groups! :)

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Not sure if you could have come Mike. We got invites from Audi, and that's the only way you could participate.

    Bob
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I did not have an invite to either Audi event (last year or this year) and just signed up on the site.

    -Brian
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
You were lucky, as they must have had some slots open. If they they were full up I doubt you would have been able to do so.

    Bob
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I signed up as early as I could :) I also tend to pick weekday ones as those generally don't fill up as fast.

    -Brian
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It was weird, at first it was only by invitation. I think they relaxed the requirements later because they could not fill up all the slots.

I'm happy because when I saw paisan driving on that track I promised myself I would do it, and now I have. Resolution complete.

    Now what? :D

alas, too far away for me in Portland OR :surprise:

Why won't Subaru host some activities up here in Portland?. Seems like all the special events happen in CA or a few other places (most likely because those are the "car happy" areas of the usa). Odd given there are a lot of Subie drivers here.

I've seen one other '09 Forester while up here (an X-Limited ?? only got a glimpse), while my XT's drawn zero attention from tuners or other folks on the road (fine by me) :) ).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That would be a lot of fun, I bet, but my issue is TIME!

After 3 weeks in Brazil, I'm spending next week in Ocean City, MD, and my boss will kill me if I take any more time off! :D

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Juice and Bob, I hope to see you guys on the 48hrs this year. We already have the date so you can mark your calenders. Jan 15-18 (and most folks have the 19th off for Martin Luther King to recover)

I would love to go and it's only a couple hours from me, but I just can't take any time off from school that soon after we begin ..

    (kids start tomorrow ...)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    You'd be surprised, Frank.

It's slow right now since everyone is off on vacation, but about a year ago I was working so hard/stressfully that my immunity was weakened and I got the shingles. I'm sure my post count last year was the lowest since I joined Edmunds.

At least it paid off - I got a solid promotion to Information Officer plus a Corporate Performance Award. Fewer than 1% of staff get those so needless to say the effort was recognized.

This year I'm pacing myself, trying to better manage the stress, balancing work with family and yes, my "virtual" friends here. :shades:

    OK, who wants in?

We started this discussion in another thread, but let's continue it here.

I peaked at 217 lbs after returning from Brazil. Let's say you can use your peak weight from this summer. We will then weigh-in again before the end of the year. Maybe on 12/25, or even perhaps the day before Thanksgiving.

    Who is in?

Winner will have lost the highest percentage of their own peak weight from this summer, to make it fair.

Bob said he was in, with a starting weight of 200 lbs.

    Anyone else?
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
I was horrified to note the development of a "muffin-top" this Spring. My self assurance that Summer and riding season would take care of it was terribly mis-placed. I haven't even been out for one proper mountain bike ride this year!! I have a theory - children cause this. I am too busy spending all my spare time shuttling kids around to various activities to do anything myself. Okay, I'm in. My peak was 186# last month.
Just a moment we have a scale outside the MR unit....182. Is this a challenge only or a bet?? How about a free meal at Bennigan's?? ;-)
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
if I'm in do I have to tell my weight? ... OMG >>>>>
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
Haha; I am right there with you. I do not weigh myself much, but I had a pre-op appointment at the hospital yesterday and they took my weight at 192#. I was horrified.

Okay, I'm in. Does this mean I actually have to do something?

Well, I think it would be fine to indicate your progress as a ratio with the absolute number considered 1.0.
How frequently should we report? Every 2 weeks? Monthly?
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
well .. SO far I weigh less than YOU guys .. but that's not a lot of consolation to me !
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
Can we check in with our weights while we have pizza at the chats? :)
  • altimatealtimate Member Posts: 74
As much as I hate looking at my overstuffed physique, I am much more concerned about the health risk involved. I put on 30 lb in the last year which I attribute to circumstances that kept me at home more than I would have liked and that caused me to wear a trench between the couch and the kitchen all night. If I didn't eat after 8pm I would probably weigh 175lb. I have to do something and I have been trying to walk 3 miles every morning before work. Have been sluffing off the last couple of weeks and am trying to push myself back into the routine.

Also as a guy in his 60's I think my metabolism has slown to a crawl as I seem to have more trouble losing and no trouble gaining. I'd love to drop 30lb by the holidays. I'm gonna give it my best.

    I hear ya Len. I'm 63 myself.

OK, I'm in ... I've gained weight this last year with ill parents, and having daughter and grandsons move in, and a really nasty year of the job ...

although I know you guys will lose faster than I will, maybe it will give me incentives to get up on that treadmill !
  • altimatealtimate Member Posts: 74
It's funny how family and work stress affect people differently. Some have no appetitie others eat to relieve stress. I've done a 180 on that myself. I used to have no appetitie when stressed. Now it's the opposite with eating the stress reliever.

I think the thing to do is make lifestyle changes and keep dangerous foods (junk snacks, etc.) out of the house. It's one thing to go out once in a while for an ice cream or a big meal. Another to be scarfing down a half gallon of ice cream at home or eating a whole bag of chips.

It's Thursday and that means time again for the longest running chat here in CarSpace, the Subaru Crew! The chat opens at 8:45 pm ET and runs until 10 pm ET. I hope you're able to join us tonight for another enjoyable evening with members of the Crew!
    See you there!

    I'm in!

I'm training for a century right now, shed 2 pounds last week. This morning's weigh in: 172 (down from 178 in June). I've got 5 weeks to go. Also, once it gets too cold to ride I'll start gaining weight again. I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather riding.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Cool, so far we have:

AJ started at 217, Bob at 200, volkov at 186, xwesx at 192, lucien at 178.

Brenda: yes, you can play along. We don't need absolute numbers, just weigh yourself now, and when we weigh in again you can just report the % of weight lost.

Example: start at 200 lbs (not you!), lose 10 lbs, so 5% weight loss. Start at 100 lbs, lose 6 lbs, you win because you lost 6%.

I marked my calendar with the starting weights for the people listed above so we can weight in on 11/25, 2 days before Thanksgiving. We could do it monthly if people want, and/or keep going after that. 3 months or so gives us enough time to have a significant change.

No allowance for age, because you geezers have more free time.

just kidding, did I offend enough people? ;)

    :D

Game on. Who else is in?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'll get in touch with some friends at Subaru to see if I can get a prize for the winner.

Try to take a Before photo of some sort, we can submit the winner's Before/After photos to Drive magazine and hopefully get those published.

This way we build-in some real incentives. :shades:

PS I'm going for fried rice but I think I'll only eat half of it this time! LOL
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
By the time I get finished eating dinner, shuttling kids around and then getting them into bed, I'm done. Add in maybe going back into work during the evening and my time to work out is gone, with my drive even worse. There was a time I'd happily go for a night ride a 10pm but those days are long gone and make Dra nervous. Sooo, get the kids down and sit on the couch for an hour or so. Of course that beer in the fridge looked mighty tempting when putting away the leftovers....I've switched some of that to nice German de-alcoholized beer, but Dra may be right with the advice to simply cut out the beer and the weight will follow.
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
I'll join in with you folks, if you don't mind. I've meant to do riding, but I've only gone twice this summer; I better get in some shape as I'm doing the MS Bike ride in Oct.

Starting weight = 198 (unfortunately) as of this morning at work.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    You're in.

I don't get why my weight is up. This light beer hasn't worked.

It does go great with these chips con queso, fried onion rings, and potato skins, though! :D
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
OK, I'll take a 'before' pic ... and I have to start doing the exercise EARLY in the day ... if I start off that way I'm more disciplined the entire day ...

I'm in; starting weight 161. I want to get down to between 140 -145.

    Yeah, tall...5'7"...a real Paul Bunyan
