Hmm, I guess the pics were a while ago, for whatever reason I pictured you being tall and thin.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Juice, you shrink as you get older. 5 years ago Serge was 6' tall. :)

    :D

I used to put down 6', now I think I'm close to 5'11".

    I think I was just 5' 11.5" all along, and a little optimistic. ;)

I didn't get a physical for ~5 years after moving to Idaho, and just about got into a fight with the RN when she informed me that I was two inches shorter than what my driver's license says. Making her do the measurement over didn't change the reading either. My BMI was ok before that. :P
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
Let's not talk BMI. According to my Dr - the BMI says I should be between 155 - 160. I haven't been that weight in about 30 years! Thankfully he wants me to get to 175, so only 23 to go :).

I'll have to look for a photo to post up.

Maybe we can chip in an Edmunds t-shirt to the winner! Good luck to everyone, I swear by the Weight Watcher diet. I've lost 40lbs in about 5 months on that twice...not that I gained it back it was from pregnancies. It's a a great plan. :)

D'Oh!! Bob beat me to it!

Cool, that would be great. Still haven't heard but hopefully we can add to the "pot" to make things interesting.

Okay I'm in. 204lbs as of this morning. I've certainly been living the good life out here in the desert, I've gained 20 pounds since we moved to Phoenix

    I'm in 300# for me.

So far I've cut out 90% of my coke drinking, down to 1 or 2 cans/day on the weekends and none during the week. Not sure if it's helping but we shall see. I'm also planning on walking when we move to the new house in a few weeks, there is a great walkway by the water. I may even get a bench press for the new house too.

I will get some Subaru Prizes for sure for us as well.

    247 is my starting point.

I warn you, I'm gonna get cranky when I'm hungry :P

oh honey ! .. you ain't even SEEN cranky yet ....
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Well, every 25 cans of Coke adds about 1 pound of body fat. I'll leave the rest of the math to you.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I quit Diet Cokes cold turkey about 2 years ago. Can't say it helped much.

I did lose 4 pounds last week ... but I had gained 6 on vacation the week before.
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
Weight loss SHOULD be simple. You either need to take in less energy than you're burning up, or burn up more than you're taking in.

It's the engineer in me, can't be helped :P

No doubt I'm a stress-eater. Last time at the doc when the nurse went to take my BP she said, "Give me your left arm" so I held up my arm. Then she said "Relax" to which I said, "That IS relaxed".

That could be the long term result of having been an EXCELLENT vise for my Dad. He'd give me something to hold still while he was going to hit it or solder it and I learned fast to not move a muscle :surprise:
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
It should be easy—but it never is. I go to the gym at least 5 days a week, 2 nights of a spinning class (stationary bike @ about 800 calories a pop), 3 days of weight training (at least an hour each time. I can bench-press 135, which is not too shabby for someone 63), and maybe a 3-mile jog another day.

Guess what? I've gained 3 pounds this month!

My appetite is HUGE! There's where my problem is. I still snack too much and always get second or third helpings at dinner. The more I exercise, the hungrier I get! I do eat lots of chicken and salads, however—just large portions...

I will say this, however: At 203, I'm in better shape now than I was 15 years ago at 180, and not exercising regularily. Muscle is heavier than fat, which accounts for that. If I can get back to 180, or less, that would be great. 170 would be ideal.

Hmmm... I wonder if we're all being inspired by the Olympics? :D

but I will 'fess up' ...

got on the scale this morning after breakfast ... if you are anywhere near a female you will understand (and maybe laugh at this next part) .... after breakfast, dressed but no shoes ... lol ... and I HAVE to keep the glasses on or I can't see all the way to the scale !

If I don't tell the weight .. I don't think I'll really commit and 'get with the program' .. and I need to ...

I have gained more than I wanted (certainly) this summer, but not as much as I feared ... under the above-mentioned circumstances, I weigh 165.9 pounds ... yeah, I really do have a scale that measures in 1/10's of a pound ... lol

As I type this I am wearing clothes that were a bit large at the beginning of summer, and now are too small ... I want to lose at least 25 pounds ... 30 would be better ...

I am mostly a stress eater, but if I'm under extreme stress I do not eat and lose quickly ... so I either have to hope for less stress than now ... or more ... and I really don't want more ...

the beginning of the year seems to be a bit less stressful than usual and some of that is that I did take the traveling position between 2 schools, so the responsibilities are a bit different with this position .. things that were very stressful for me last year are mostly "not my job" this year ... and while it's hard at times not to just jump in and take care of things, I'm really trying to stay within MY job and not do those things ... (I know .. not a clear representation .. sorry) ...

so now that school is back in session .. things should be a bit more consistently scheduled than the summer and my husband also went to the doctor this week and is needing to lose LOTS of weight .. (at least 100 pounds .. so my 25-30 doesn't seem like all that much, does it?) .. if I'm trying to lose weight, I cook more healthy meals, and he'll eat what I cook .. so I will be helping us both ...

I'll get a pic up or emailed to someone to post in a few days (I hope) ... ugh ... lol .. hopefully we'll all have great AFTERS !

so guys ... you know how we women are when we're dieting ... as I said in an earlier post ....

ohhhhh honey ... you ain't seen anything LIKE cranky yet !

I switched from 10" plates to 6" plates a couple of years ago. Our houseguests tend to freak out (and grab a second plate).

Can't say that smaller plates help much either though. Maybe if I didn't snack at the computer, where I tend to sit 16 hours a day....
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
did you forget the smiley face on that one? Cutting out DIET coke won't help your weight loss, and the reduced caffeine intake might worsen it. It would take a few thousand diet Cokes to gain a pound.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
There are studies out there that say using artificial sweeteners lowers your metabolism and actually make you hungrier so you wind up gaining weight. link. I just liked the taste salient orosensory stimulus.

Bad idea, that stuff gives you the munchies something awful!! It's likely to make matters worse.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Yes, I didn't want to go too technical on that one. You are indeed correct, but it is more a case of Diet Coke not helping than no Diet Coke helping. Stay away from the sweet stuff. Sparkling water is a good choice if you find water too bland.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I go through about a half gallon of ice tea a day. But I usually stick a Sweet n Low in there, so it's the same issue. Lemon tap water works ok for a sub for me and I've been gravitating that way (there's a gravity pun in there somewhere, lol).

We need a group exercise plan - maybe driving our Subarus to the mall at dawn, where we push them for a mile across the empty parking lot?

Great idea Steve! Do we get bonus points if the trunk ("boot" to those who speak the King's English) is full? Maybe a Subie "Boot Camp" Award?

Eating less does help, but just doing some type of exercise regularly is the key, IMO. 3 years ago I was 180-ish. I bought an elliptical machine and stuck it in front of the TV in the den, knowing that it would guilt me into using it while watching stuff from the DVR. I dropped 30 lbs in 4 months, and surprisingly once you see the pounds on the scale showing less, it seems to click and you start chosing foods a bit better or eating one portion instead of 2, etc. Now instead of having a heaping plate at dinner, I have leftovers the next day.

1 or 2 soda's or "pop" a day, small snack of pretzels or goldfish or fruit mid morning, and 2 - 3 full glasses of water each day.

I still use the elliptical almost every day or so, keeping my weight between 155-165 since. This summer, I've been riding my bike to work (only 3.1 miles round trip) when the weather allows. And thanks to the kids (5 & 7) who ditched training wheels for good in the spring, we ride around the neighborhood after dinner a couple times per week (all of us wearing bike helmets btw). I have had to step up the number of steps on the elliptical over time to help keep things going: I began with 30 minutes or 3000 steps. Now I do 35 - 40 and vary the speed/pace.

Have faith & keep with it. Am looking forward to reading about your progress over the next few months.

Bob, have you had your thyroid levels checked lately? That sounds like an awful lot of activity to be gaining weight ....
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
To contribute to the general discussion, I'd like to mention that the details of nutrition are a big part of weight loss. We have pretty much eliminated all industrially produced processed foods- they're loaded with HFCS, partially hydrogenated oils, and other things that offer no nutrition but can really make losing weight difficult. The more processing that is involved in food, the likelier it is that it's a contributing factor.

Same goes for carbs- the more processed they are (white sugar, mass-market bread and pasta), the more directly they wind up on the waistline.

Fast food is more or less lethal, and so are national "family restaurant" chains. Go have a look at Ruby Tueday's web site and have a look at the calorie counts and fat counts. You'll drop dead just reading it! It isn't easy to find, and it's a pdf. The Bacon cheesburger packs 1200 calories! Just the darn burger. The Carolina chicken salad packs 800. Yikes. I can't imagine that Applebee's and Chili's and Friday's are dramatically different.

and of course there is exercise. It's been shown in recent studies that the "30 minutes 3 times a week" mantra is more or less bunk. It just isn't enough.

It is by no means easy, but a dramatic change in lifestyle is sometimes needed. The benefit is nothing less than good health, focus, energy, and longevity. I've been working on this for 3 years, and it sure hasn't been easy. I've added cycling to my life, as endurance workouts are the best for burning fat and improving blood pressure/resting heart rate. I've given up a lot of social activities, but I've also learned to jettison what could be referred to as a lot of time wasting. TV? nope. Internet? Haven't posted on nabisco in weeks, and even here I've been around less. But I've lost nearly 30 pounds....10 pounds a year isn't great, but then again, I have not been disciplined in the off-season and overeat in the winter, so I tend to gain 7-8 pounds. So it's 30 pounds net. That's a hurdle I am focused on getting over this winter. I'm working so hard to get ready for this century, I do NOT want to lose this fitness this go-round. I'm in the best shape of my life, I'm convinced.

    anyway, that's my .0136 euros.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
That's actually my excuse for some of my weight gain Bren. My thyroid had to come out a year ago and now I can just blame the spare tire on "glands" (or lack thereof in my case). Good advice though!
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Yep. Had blood tests recently, and thyroid is fine. My problem is I simply shove too much food into my mouth. ;)

    Hello Diet Crew!!!

Been a really busy summer (as usual) between work and family and training. I put a lot of miles on my bike and successfully completed the STP (Seattle to Portland) bike ride in one day- 202 miles! (we ended up doing 208 because we had a small, uh, detour and went the wrong way!) It's a great event and partially sponsored by Subaru- (all of the aid cars were Outbacks with bike racks on the top)- it was always good to see them, somehow encouraging me to go on, even though there were moments I was tempted to jump into one! :D

I'm glad to see so many others trying to get in shape. As I tell my patients trying to lose weight- input has to be less than output (sounds simple, but sure isn't!) and of course exercise. Weight loss shouldn't be the goal as much as fat loss- so instead of measuring off the pounds a better method would be measuring the waistline (or arms, or legs, or whatever) since as Bob pointed out muscle is gained with exercise which is a good thing.

Anyway, comraderie works well in keeping each other accountable. The other great motivator? Money. Shown to be a very strong motivator to live healthier. Some companies are giving their employees bonuses if they lose weight or quite smoking.

    Good luck everyone!

A double century - wow. And congrats!
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
no kidding. I think this regular century coming up might kill me
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
Congrats on the ride! I'm so out of shape that I'm only doing the small routes in 2 rides coming up: MSBikeNYC - 30 miles and SIBA Pumpkin Patch Pedal in NJ (also 30 miles). I hope to someday get up to a century, but can't even think of 2 in one day!

Baby steps. One week into it and I've misplaced 3 pounds, but 247 to 244 is easy. Hopefully the whole group can start to build some downward momentum here ;)

All this talk of dieting is making me hungry...

    Bob
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
There are 168 hours in a week and if we sleep for 8 hours a day (or at least power down a bit) that leaves 112 hours. If we all show up to the chats each week I can keep us from eating for almost 2% of that time by distracting us with engaging automotive chat :P

Throw in 30 minutes to an hour a day on physical activity and we're practically under 100 hours a week we have to kill without eating.

    See how simple it is??
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
sorry for your plight ... hard to be sympathetic! :P
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Thanks guys. I'm really glad I was able to finish. Riding a bike for over 12 hours is quite an ache in a lot of places!

I think once you get to the 40 mile mark extending your distance gets easier if you have the right equipment. These days with carbon fiber everything riding a bike is a lot easier and more comfortable than when I was in college riding a 25lb steel road bike.

I'm sure you guys can do a century as long as you're persistent!

Likewise with the dieting and exercise, I'm sure you guys will make it with persistence!

Back in '70, I did 75 miles on my Schwinn Varsity. Rested a day then came back. I carried my Visqueen and a sleeping bag in a frame backpack on my back. I had originally planned to return the 2nd day. Idiocy. :shades:

The next year I got a 531 bike and learned about panniers, but never rode that far again.

No, no attempts to lose weight.

Generally, my weight fluactuates +/- 5 lbs according to the season.

This summer my weight just took a dive.

It's Thursday and that means time again for the longest running chat here in CarSpace, the Subaru Crew! The chat opens at 8:45 pm ET and runs until 10 pm ET. I hope you're able to join us tonight for another enjoyable evening with members of the Crew!
    See you there!

Well SOMEBODY has to be willing to take on the Olympics :P

Hey Dave, that's a 10% decrease in your weight without trying, which is a fair amount. You might want to talk to your doctor and just get checked out. I'm sure it's nothing though.

Maybe your goal could be to gain as much weight as other people lose.

    tom
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
You guys are funny.... but I'll play as well :)

I have taken soda completely out of my life. Stick to juice (natural for the most part), water and fruit smoothies/shakes. My portions have decreased but not much.. you're talking about a Puerto Rican here... food and decrease don't go in the same sentence :shades:

Anyway, I do my best to not eat after 8pm. If I do, I'll have a small portion plate that has low carbs. Most of the weight gains are a result of people eating and eating heavy at night. Body at this point is in a 'recouping' period, so not much fat burning happening there.

You can learn to eat throughout the day, which is actually recommended, but in small portions; or eat with moderation in your 3 meals a day. You can have a heavy breakfast, which is recommended, because that's when your body is at peak fat burning. A moderate lunch and light dinner.

Believe it or not, I bought a 7 day full body cleansing formula at GNC and it contributed alot to my changing of eating habits. I really didn't need to lose weight but the salesperson informed me that I will lose weight because it removes all the oxidents, residue and stuff that stays stuck to your intestinal walls and so forth. It replenishes your body with a whole bunch of good stuff; anti-oxidents, protein, etc. So, if you're really trying to do your body better, this is a start. It also has a regimen to follow if you wish to increase your weight loss. And no... it won't have you running to the bathroom; but it will regulate you :) I lost 6 lbs. by the time I finished the cleansing. Can't imagine all the garbage I got rid of. You HAVE to do cardio to increase your metabolism. Anyone who says you don't need to is fooling themselves. Walk around your neighborhood or whatever. I'm 6'5" @ 188 lbs. and starting to increase weight little by little because I'm working out. But all in all, if losing weight is your ambition, then you should start with a cleansing :D

    http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2166844&cp=2167112.2293676&parent- - Page=family

disclaimer - I don't work or have any affiliation with GNC. I'm just sharing something that you can benefit as have I.

    Darn, darn, and double darn!
Had every intention of dropping in on the chat for a few minutes tonight, but would you believe the weather was to blame?

I mowed the lawn today - between thunderstorms, it only took about three times my normal mowing time - threw my timetable WAY off! By the time we got home from back-to-school shopping, I had just enough time to finish the lawn before dark & dinner!

    Sigh.
    Cheers!
