    OK OK .. quit hounding me ... as you've probably guessed I haven't lost a thing ...

was doing pretty well at maintaining at least ... however, in the last few weeks I've gained three pounds ....

... guess I've got to decide to actually change something .. LOL
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
OK, so some of us haven't yet acheived what we want. I do propose that we consider this the end of part one and keep the project going with part two. Hopefully we can keep interest and support working towards everyone's better health.

    Juice,

Paisan is busy getting ready for the 48hrs drive so the weigh in may be delayed. I'm not going to weigh myself after the trip since we'll be eating in all types of places. BTW, here is an article in the local paper about the drive:

I'm blaming the sore back for inactivity and overeating ....

    (but it is getting better)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That sounds good, but I think we have to honor the rules and give the prize to the winner of Part I.

Perhaps Edmunds' prize can go to whoever wins Part II? They had hinted they could add to the pot, but it wasn't specifically promised.

Any objections to that idea? The Subaru swag will go to the winner of Part I, then we can give the Edmunds freebies to the 2nd phase champ.

For Part II, we'll still go by the original weight, so that whatever progress was made so far isn't lost. Everyone OK with that?

Long term for weight loss is the better way to do it anyway. Long and slow is the ticket!
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,704
Yes, in terms of the "prize," I think things should proceed as originally planned. I just think we should continue to encourage one another (i.e., keep the "competition" going). I apologize if my original suggestion was interpreted differently.

Are you not eligible because you're a host?

If that's the case volkov is our leader. Unless one of the people who hasn't reported yet lost more?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,347
yeah... I'd probably have to claim it on my taxes... ;)

Seriously... the weight loss makes me very, very happy.. I'm trying not to make any changes that I can't keep up, ad infinitum... So, everything in moderation.. It is working even better than I hoped..

One big change: I won't drink beer that I don't love.. I'm not wasting calories on Miller Lite or Coors Light.. That allows me to drink even more Newcastle or Paulaner Hefe-weizen... :)

Beer ain't bad for ya, it's those nachos, potato skins, and pizza. :surprise:
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,347
You just have to get someone to split the nachos with you.... Pizza: don't feel the need to finish it... three pieces is plenty..

Potato skins? No.. not worth it... lol...

Funny enough, I eat little to none of the food we typically consider "bad for you," or high calorie, like pizza, restaurant/fast food, beer, nachos, potato or corn chips, etc. Spending less than $400 a month on food (including eating out and beverages) for a family of four, how could I possibly buy processed/prepared foods? But, alas, I still manage to take in the calories. I am not heavy, mind you, but I would be feeling pretty darn good if I lost 15-20#.

I might have left out the part about exercise... :surprise:

At 50 yrs old, the amount of calories needed to maintain my weight, given my sedentary lifestyle is infinitesimally small... :(

I started walking to the school and back from my house.. It's 2.3 miles roundtrip, and I knock it out in 34-37 minutes.. Since the first 3/10ths miles is pretty steep uphill, it is a decent workout... I try to get it in at least 3 days per week...

I'd attribute a lot my weight loss to the exercise... Not necessarily the calories burned, but the consequent increase in metabolism... Again, I tried to do something that I could stick with...

A lot of little things have made the difference...

Yeah, that is likely my problem. My exercise regime has gone way down over the last 10 months. I have done little exercising at all. Walks with my son have stopped (my wife wants me to take both children and the dynamics of that during the winter months just drives me nuts), I opted not to participate in organized sports (broomball) last Fall due to a knee surgery and the cost of fuel without substituting any exercise, and my pick-up broomball games have been non-existent this winter even though it is a perfect winter for outdoor sports given the overall mild temperatures (save for the two weeks prior to this).

I have really been doing little cardiovascular exercise. At 31, it sure is a bad time to start doing that...

Good news, though, is that I decided to start playing organized broomball again. I have to take advantage of the relatively low fuel prices while they stick around!

If you want to drag the weigh-in out a few months, I'll be happy to keep a close eye on the swag. ;)
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
... he said in his least self serving tone.
I was just thinking that it would be good to keep this up. Mutual support groups like this have been shown to help with diet, exercise or even smoking cessation. Helps too if we have repeated weigh in days. Otherwise it becomes an issue of "I'll start cutting back next month." Repeated assessments maintain the short term motivation.

this is what's heading to the east coast ...

so far this month we've had 23 inches of snowfall and more is predicted for tomorrow ... considering it didn't start snowing until the 2nd week of January ...

yesterday the low temp was -15 with wind chills in the -30 to -35 range ... early this morning we hit -19 officially .. in outlying areas it was even colder ...

I love having a snug house and central heat ! - oh yeah .. and the Outback ... yesterday we all took turns with it to do the essential appointments ...

Sorry to hear that, Brenda. It is +48F today in Fairbanks, AK. Sure beats the heck out of the -45F we had on Sunday! :P

Hi all. I've been gone most of this month and had little access to the Internet. I also didn't get any exercise for over 3 weeks which didn't help my weight :( Well the bottom line (no pun inteneded) is I'm up to 208 lbs. Therefore I'm all in favor of extending/continuing the weight loss program :)

Since I didn't find you in Facebook (I did a search for you), I asked juice to let you know about it...I was picked to go to DC for an Educator Study trip to the Holocaust Museum...there are 22 teachers from the county out of almost 100 who applied. The dates are April 4th-6th and we are free the night of the 5th (Sunday).
Hopefully, we can all get together for dinner and talk.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Ah... I'm not in Facebook. :)

Sounds good. I should be able to make it. Let's touch base a bit closer to that date.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Probably the only gain, but in a mostly horrible month Subaru actually increased sales by 8%. Wow.

My guess is the Forester is mostly responsible, since the old one was still being sold a year ago (it came out in March-April, so we can only compare year-to-year for the same model after April or so).

Also, I think Subaru owners can afford to spend more, only they choose not to. That means fewer people that would buy one back out of a purchase because they can still afford it even in bad times.

In other words, we're smart. :shades:

Here’s an excerpt from an article I saw on the Internet this morning:

Is Your Car a Cop Magnet?

If $4 gas didn't convince you to trade in that big H2 for a Mini Cooper, perhaps your friendly neighborhood police officer will. It seems that Hummer drivers get more traffic tickets than drivers of any other make of car.

The data come from a survey conducted by ISO Quality Planning. The company helps insurers spot risks; or in other words, it helps insurance companies spot you, Mr. Bright Yellow Hummer.

Not sure if your car attracts more cops than a donut shop? Check out the list to see if your ride is getting you unwanted attention.

////The H2 is at the top of the list of most ticketed cars which is believeable but surprisingly, the Outback came in as the 8th most ticketed automobile////

    8. Subaru Outback

Subarus have a reputation of being yuppie grocery getters, but the Outback manages to prove that stereotype wrong by being one of the top ten most ticketed cars. Apparently, the Outback is the car of choice for people who need to get to Whole Foods in a hurry, and maybe park illegally once they're there.

    Good thing I drive a Forester :)

As multiple time winner of the Pinewood Derby :P I can now reveal the secret to my success was lubricating the axles with graphite powder.

    Nothing like free-wheeling!

Thats exactly what I wrote on his facebook page, as well as wondering why it wasn't blue.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's what I wanted to do, but my son is really into his Nintendo games so building a car for Mario was his call.

My daughter was jealous and wanted to build a green car for Yoshi.

Maybe I'll buy a few more kits, including one for me. I even have the Subaru stickers. :D
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Yes, all "children wanted this" excuses aside, you should have made your own. Thank goodness they didn't demand you make a Chrysler : then we'd have to banish you ; )
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Ahh Serge, you know what they say about great minds. . . ;)

I still remember one of the fastest pinewood derby cars I raced against- they were ugly! Totally flat except the back where all the extra weight was mounted as high as possible.

Those ugly cars smoked everyone. :(

Funny the things we remember. . .

    tom
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That would have been slow and unreliable. :D

The hole where Mario sits is strategically sized - a quarter fits in there perfectly.

To race you can go up to 5 ounces, so we'll insert quarters until it's up to the limit, then race it.

I put the weight in the center, but I guess high and far back would have been better?

    Oh well.
