(We'll leave the light on for you Wes

Thanks! I talked with my wife yesterday, and she is willing to do the "L" when headed back to Alaska. So, looks like we will be passing through that area after all.

    BRG? What is that?

I have a coworker here in Fairbanks who was looking to sell her Miata a couple years back, but I think she changed her mind at the time. It is in amazing condition, but she also wanted a fair chunk of change for it at the time ($8,000 IIRC). Hers id one of the special editions, not sure which year, but it id burgundy with a tan top, manual (are Miatas made with autos?).

    BRG = British Racing Green

From the days when there were national colours for race cars from each country.

    France - Blue
    Italy - Red
    Germany - Silver
    etc.

Oooh..... It took me a long while before I understood the acronym WRB as well.

    Thank you!

Fandc nailed it, but I can't say that I've ever heard of French Racing Blue. If they used green like the Brits, it would be too close to FRoG I suppose. :)

Yellowstone and the Tetons are about 8 hours from here so if you plan it right, you can hit those and then hit our showers within a reasonable time. :shades: It's not the direct route home but there's lots of scenic spots to enjoy along the way.

There's a ~2000 red Miata and the owner is asking ~$11k for it. TMV is close to $7k. Reports are that it's spiffy, but I haven't seen it.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Are you sure there ever was BRG with heated seats on the same car?

I thought heated seats only started being offered for model year 2007 on Miatas. Loaded up 2006 GTs do not have that.

And the new green doesn't do it for me. Definitely not BRG.

$11k is OUTRAGEOUSLY overpriced for a 2000 model. My brother was close to buying a 2006 GT for under $14k, 6 years newer for not a lot more money.

My wife suggested we visit Yellowstone when we were headed down, so I think we might just go through that way. I tentatively worked out a schedule. All the markers on this map, save for Portland, OR (which is a mid-day visit with a friend), represents an overnight stop. It makes for a 12-day trip, which seems reasonable given the short driving days we have to endure in order to keep our children (and, by extension, ourselves) sane. I decided to take a full two weeks off from work, so we have a total of 14 days in case of delays.

We will be camping most, if not all, nights on the way back up. Great for the pocket book but not for the back! I would certainly be happy to do a meet & greet when we pass through your area. I think you are near Boise, right? If so, we plan to stop in that area for an overnight, likely on 6/11 if all goes on schedule.

You guys will be going right by us through South Bend Indiana .... want to stop for some quick reading tutoring for the kiddoes? ... (heh)

    Speaking of camping...

I dusted off the old tent and hope to take the kids for their first overnight camping trip this Saturday, if it doesn't rain.

Right now forecast is 80% chance of rain.

June 11? I'm doing my nails that day. :)

We're wide open; send me a PM. If you can allow a little extra time, you may want to look at going a little north of the "smile of Idaho." I think the Interstate is pretty scenic along there but it's more like tundra country and some people don't care for it. If you go north a bit, you get more of the Sawtooth mountain flavor near Sun Valley. But it's lots curvier and slower.

Juice, I've studied the online instructions about adding heated seats to Miatas and I think I'd be game for trying that. Couldn't be much worse than replacing a soft top eh?

I changed the oil and filters in the Outback a couple of days ago. The front seal doesn't seem any worse, but the "endcaps" on the boxer are now weeping. (Don't tell Wes ;) )
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, I've read about a couple of guys that put in heated seats and it didn't seem TOO bad.

I'd be worried about leaving wrinkles everywhere.

I actually priced the seats, do-able but I'm broke right now. Car poor. :D
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
I'm sure my daughter would love that! Do you have experience tutoring 19-month-old toddlers?! :P

But seriously, we might be able to stop for a few minutes. I suspect we will make a short day of Sunday rather than actually leaving from PA on Monday morning with the hope of reaching Madison by evening. I have driven through Chicago enough times to know what a ridiculous cluster that is. Only at 0300 have I made it through there with minimal disruption. On our way to PA, we took small state roads to avoid the area, but that option introduces its own set of problems and delays. So, South Bend is approximately mid-Indiana, so if we travel across part of Ohio, we would likely hit that area around lunch-time on Monday. We like to take a couple hours' break from driving mid-day in order to give the kids some run-around time.

    Hahaha. Touche.

We typically travel through northern Idaho (I-90 route) when going east-west (and it is gorgeous!), but I think my wife would very much like to run through the Yellowstone area since she has yet to see it. We are trying to visit some friends/family on our way back north, but we do need to keep our route fairly direct. We like to take minor detours off the main roads when possible, but combining the route through Yellowstone with a route that took us through northern Idaho would be a bit much. Since this is our third such trip like this as a couple, I am trying to actually plan this thing out like my wife would do it rather than how I would. I need to score all the points I can muster.... :D

Sounds like you are getting close to seal/gasket replacement time! I did that twice on my '96 Outback.... once at 144K and again at 196K, when I also replaced the head gaskets. Doing so is a pretty simple job - not much more complicated than replacing the timing belt.

Oh, not that far north - just the back roads just north of the Interstate. Craters of the Moon is the first big attraction and if you have time you could flip up to Sun Valley and Stanley and then back down. Otherwise you can go back down to I-84 at Mountain Home. It's scenic but not direct. Maybe play it by ear and weather.

I'm hoping the seepage grows slowly since I'm still a few years away from the timing belt change (by miles that is ;) ). Maybe I'll get an estimate from you and fly you back down to do the job - I have plenty of Alaska Air miles, lol.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
I'll look into the scenic Idaho routes. I was thinking you meant north of I-90....

As far as the car goes, that might work out if it is a couple years from now. We are planning to buy another Subaru (new or close to it) in the fall of 2011, so I will likely be coming down to pick one up anyway. I could drive over to Boise before headed back north. Assuming no hitches, it is a day job at best and you are looking at under $500 in parts, depending on what all you replace while we are in there. But, as with the upcoming trip... will definitely have to play it by ear. ;)

well, most of my experience is with elementary school students, but I'm sure your daughter is extremely gifted and we can work something out ... and, of course, I have all that experience with my gifted children/grandchildren as they were toddlers ...

What day would you likely be in South Bend? I will be doing "some" reading tutoring in the mornings for 3 weeks beginning in the 2nd week of June. If you're serious about stopping, I'll start trying to think of something not too far off your highway that could be kid/adult friendly. (We're about 90 miles east of Chicago - and if there were any other route I could suggest to you that didn't go THROUGH Chicago, I would!)

if there were any other route I could suggest to you that didn't go THROUGH Chicago, I would!

I know! All roads lead to Chicago! It is terribly frustrating. We went around Chicago, for the most part, headed to PA, but we visited some friends in Madison, so it was difficult to accomplish and added many miles to the trip. If we had not needed to stay on such a tight schedule, I would have been tempted to go over the UP and cross into NY via a quick jaunt through Ontario. As it was....

Like I mentioned, we will cross through Indiana on Monday, 6/8. I get back into Erie on 6/6, and my son's fifth birthday is on 6/7, so we will likely take it easy the first part of the day on Sunday rather than hit the road first thing in the morning. If we do that, we will camp somewhere in Ohio Sunday night. That would put us through South Bend around noon, perhaps late morning, on Monday.

We always like green spaces; good exercise and my son tends to have less ways to get in trouble.

I just got a new battery this morning after the old one kicked the bucket. Works fine except the security light blinks fast when the engine is off, whether the system is armed or not. Any ideas? I've gotten new batteries in the past and this is the first occurrence of this phenomenon
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I think the fast blink means it's in Valet mode. Last month someone told me how to switch back and forth between armed and valet, but then I got the alarm disabled by moving a dip switch and promptly forgot the instructions.

I think you hold the flashing button down for 3 seconds while the door is open to get the light to blink in armed mode. My alarm instruction manual is vague on the subject.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Serge, Steve may be on to something here. I would check your owners manual. There may be some instructions there as to how to change that.

Thanks, guy. I'll try it tonight.
  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
Steve, you were right...held it for 3-4 seconds and te blinking is gone. Thanks.

Got the wheels on NASIOC; they are 1998 2.5RS wheels which came with Dunlop SP Sport 5000 tires in great shape. I put those on the OEMS and put my RE960 AS tires on the gold wheels. Next up, APS 3" TBE system.

Mike, what is your advice on tightening up the suspension a bit, not for tracking but just better handling? Let me know when you get a chance.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
    I always liked those wheels.

nice find. Virtually impossible to find on Nabisco these days, classic look in WRB
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Agreed. Rare and nice because they fit big brakes that usually require wheels an inch bigger in diameter. Opens up some options and keeps the unsprung weight down.

    Sweet WRX. :shades:
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
plus they were 16x7 and pretty light. Basically STi v2 (?) wheels. Then when we finally got the wRX here, it arrived with heavier 16x6.5 wheels. Wow, remember those days? When the coolest Sube was a 2.5RS and everyone was trying to turbo them.....seems like ancient history now.
  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
Yep, I like them a lot; paid only $650 shipped for the wheels and a set of Dunlop SP Sport 5000 with lots of tread left. I had those mounted on my oems and put the Bridgestone RE960 AS tires on the golds.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I remember it like it was yesterday, in fact I had more free time back then so I spent more time on cars as a hobby in general, vs. now.

Nowadays it's Mario Kart Wii with my son. :D

This is a rehash of my comment in Tom's Corner Garage: Avoiding Summer 'Meltdowns'. Basically, I parked the Outback outside for a couple of days and the pen that I keep in my gas log book in the visor baked and leaked out.

Naturally it was blue ink, so it doesn't blend in too well with the black leather seats. More character marks (don't tell Wes, lol).

I called about a nice sounding Miata today in BRG and tan. Only $2,000 too high but I was thinking it was a one owner cream puff from the description. Turns out that the owner has just had it for one year. It's another California car (but from inland!). :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Will baking soda absorb some of it? The leather probably soaked some of it in, though. :(
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The drops got baked in for at least a day before I discovered it. Most of the cleaning sites recommended rubbing alcohol, but we didn't have any. My wife found some Swimmer's Ear in the medicine cabinet that's mostly alcohol and that helped quite a bit. I didn't want to get too aggresive and make it worse by leeching out the dye on the leather.

Some baking soda probably would help though - probably would help keep any ink from rubbing off on my pants.

    Stuff happens. :-)
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
Haha; that it does, but who would ever have thought it would be that?!

Not that this has anything to do with the topic at hand, but I embark on my trip south tomorrow night! I will contact you and Brenda for phone #s so I will be able to keep in touch as we progress on our trip. I doubt I will be logging in from the road, as we are going to be camping on this go round. It is always nice to think we will travel as planned, but with two children and 205,000 miles, anything can happen! :D

That's nothing. My boys decided to leave Crayons which got behind and under their booster seats in my WRX. Nice environmentally friendly soy based green, yellow and blue. I got to discover a modern art dried puddle which soaked into the cavities of the WRX cloth. Ice cubes enabled me to remove quite a bit, but some had worked its way into the fibres and never came out.

Got together with Bob and Frank yesterday, and ate some yummy crab cakes at the Stoney Creek Inn. Pix:

    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/sredir?uname=coachjuiceman&target=ALBUM&id=534495- 4374152051985&authkey=Gv1sRgCL-H0YqW2NHCYw&authkey=Gv1sRgCL-H0YqW2NHCYw&invite=C- LKfrpsP&feat=email

Frank drove up in his SLK350 and I had my Miata, so we compared power hard tops. Bob came in his WRX, I parked side-by-side so we could get some photos.

I had the regular crab cake platter, but Bob had the big one, and boy, that crab cake seemed to be the size of an Apple Pie! It was HUGE! Lots of crab meat and very little filler, so it was delicious. Thanks to lucien for the recommendation.

After lunch Bob and I drove to a Subaru dealer in Silver Spring, but all the dealerships were closed, so we were only able to check out a few cars from the outside.

They didn't have any 2010 Subarus at all, so I didn't get to see that 2nd red color used for the 2010 Forester. Bummer.

We dropped by a Mazda dealer so I could show Bob the new Sunburst Yellow color for the Miata (gorgeous, but not available in hard top form).

Then we snapped a pic of the new Cube, a quirky but neat little car.

After that we even hit the BMW dealer at the same auto park and were able to get in an unlocked Z4 hardtop. Very nice but those things have grown in to big and heavy GTs now.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Yup, lots of fun, and my crab cake was a 1-pounder.
