Thanks! I talked with my wife yesterday, and she is willing to do the "L" when headed back to Alaska. So, looks like we will be passing through that area after all.
BRG? What is that?
I have a coworker here in Fairbanks who was looking to sell her Miata a couple years back, but I think she changed her mind at the time. It is in amazing condition, but she also wanted a fair chunk of change for it at the time ($8,000 IIRC). Hers id one of the special editions, not sure which year, but it id burgundy with a tan top, manual (are Miatas made with autos?).

From the days when there were national colours for race cars from each country.
France - Blue
Italy - Red
Germany - Silver
etc.
Thank you!
Yellowstone and the Tetons are about 8 hours from here so if you plan it right, you can hit those and then hit our showers within a reasonable time. :shades: It's not the direct route home but there's lots of scenic spots to enjoy along the way.
There's a ~2000 red Miata and the owner is asking ~$11k for it. TMV is close to $7k. Reports are that it's spiffy, but I haven't seen it.
I thought heated seats only started being offered for model year 2007 on Miatas. Loaded up 2006 GTs do not have that.
And the new green doesn't do it for me. Definitely not BRG.
$11k is OUTRAGEOUSLY overpriced for a 2000 model. My brother was close to buying a 2006 GT for under $14k, 6 years newer for not a lot more money.
My wife suggested we visit Yellowstone when we were headed down, so I think we might just go through that way. I tentatively worked out a schedule. All the markers on this map, save for Portland, OR (which is a mid-day visit with a friend), represents an overnight stop. It makes for a 12-day trip, which seems reasonable given the short driving days we have to endure in order to keep our children (and, by extension, ourselves) sane. I decided to take a full two weeks off from work, so we have a total of 14 days in case of delays.
We will be camping most, if not all, nights on the way back up. Great for the pocket book but not for the back! I would certainly be happy to do a meet & greet when we pass through your area. I think you are near Boise, right? If so, we plan to stop in that area for an overnight, likely on 6/11 if all goes on schedule.
I dusted off the old tent and hope to take the kids for their first overnight camping trip this Saturday, if it doesn't rain.
Right now forecast is 80% chance of rain.
We're wide open; send me a PM. If you can allow a little extra time, you may want to look at going a little north of the "smile of Idaho." I think the Interstate is pretty scenic along there but it's more like tundra country and some people don't care for it. If you go north a bit, you get more of the Sawtooth mountain flavor near Sun Valley. But it's lots curvier and slower.
Juice, I've studied the online instructions about adding heated seats to Miatas and I think I'd be game for trying that. Couldn't be much worse than replacing a soft top eh?
I changed the oil and filters in the Outback a couple of days ago. The front seal doesn't seem any worse, but the "endcaps" on the boxer are now weeping. (Don't tell Wes
I'd be worried about leaving wrinkles everywhere.
I actually priced the seats, do-able but I'm broke right now. Car poor.
But seriously, we might be able to stop for a few minutes. I suspect we will make a short day of Sunday rather than actually leaving from PA on Monday morning with the hope of reaching Madison by evening. I have driven through Chicago enough times to know what a ridiculous cluster that is. Only at 0300 have I made it through there with minimal disruption. On our way to PA, we took small state roads to avoid the area, but that option introduces its own set of problems and delays. So, South Bend is approximately mid-Indiana, so if we travel across part of Ohio, we would likely hit that area around lunch-time on Monday. We like to take a couple hours' break from driving mid-day in order to give the kids some run-around time.
We typically travel through northern Idaho (I-90 route) when going east-west (and it is gorgeous!), but I think my wife would very much like to run through the Yellowstone area since she has yet to see it. We are trying to visit some friends/family on our way back north, but we do need to keep our route fairly direct. We like to take minor detours off the main roads when possible, but combining the route through Yellowstone with a route that took us through northern Idaho would be a bit much. Since this is our third such trip like this as a couple, I am trying to actually plan this thing out like my wife would do it rather than how I would. I need to score all the points I can muster....
Sounds like you are getting close to seal/gasket replacement time! I did that twice on my '96 Outback.... once at 144K and again at 196K, when I also replaced the head gaskets. Doing so is a pretty simple job - not much more complicated than replacing the timing belt.
I'm hoping the seepage grows slowly since I'm still a few years away from the timing belt change (by miles that is
As far as the car goes, that might work out if it is a couple years from now. We are planning to buy another Subaru (new or close to it) in the fall of 2011, so I will likely be coming down to pick one up anyway. I could drive over to Boise before headed back north. Assuming no hitches, it is a day job at best and you are looking at under $500 in parts, depending on what all you replace while we are in there. But, as with the upcoming trip... will definitely have to play it by ear.
What day would you likely be in South Bend? I will be doing "some" reading tutoring in the mornings for 3 weeks beginning in the 2nd week of June. If you're serious about stopping, I'll start trying to think of something not too far off your highway that could be kid/adult friendly. (We're about 90 miles east of Chicago - and if there were any other route I could suggest to you that didn't go THROUGH Chicago, I would!)

I know! All roads lead to Chicago! It is terribly frustrating. We went around Chicago, for the most part, headed to PA, but we visited some friends in Madison, so it was difficult to accomplish and added many miles to the trip. If we had not needed to stay on such a tight schedule, I would have been tempted to go over the UP and cross into NY via a quick jaunt through Ontario. As it was....
Like I mentioned, we will cross through Indiana on Monday, 6/8. I get back into Erie on 6/6, and my son's fifth birthday is on 6/7, so we will likely take it easy the first part of the day on Sunday rather than hit the road first thing in the morning. If we do that, we will camp somewhere in Ohio Sunday night. That would put us through South Bend around noon, perhaps late morning, on Monday.
We always like green spaces; good exercise and my son tends to have less ways to get in trouble.
I think you hold the flashing button down for 3 seconds while the door is open to get the light to blink in armed mode. My alarm instruction manual is vague on the subject.

Here are photos of the wagon from this afternoon with its so-far only mod
Got the wheels on NASIOC; they are 1998 2.5RS wheels which came with Dunlop SP Sport 5000 tires in great shape. I put those on the OEMS and put my RE960 AS tires on the gold wheels. Next up, APS 3" TBE system.
Mike, what is your advice on tightening up the suspension a bit, not for tracking but just better handling? Let me know when you get a chance.

Sweet WRX. :shades:
Nowadays it's Mario Kart Wii with my son.
Naturally it was blue ink, so it doesn't blend in too well with the black leather seats. More character marks (don't tell Wes, lol).
I called about a nice sounding Miata today in BRG and tan. Only $2,000 too high but I was thinking it was a one owner cream puff from the description. Turns out that the owner has just had it for one year. It's another California car (but from inland!). :shades:
Some baking soda probably would help though - probably would help keep any ink from rubbing off on my pants.
Stuff happens. :-)
Not that this has anything to do with the topic at hand, but I embark on my trip south tomorrow night! I will contact you and Brenda for phone #s so I will be able to keep in touch as we progress on our trip. I doubt I will be logging in from the road, as we are going to be camping on this go round. It is always nice to think we will travel as planned, but with two children and 205,000 miles, anything can happen!

Frank drove up in his SLK350 and I had my Miata, so we compared power hard tops. Bob came in his WRX, I parked side-by-side so we could get some photos.
I had the regular crab cake platter, but Bob had the big one, and boy, that crab cake seemed to be the size of an Apple Pie! It was HUGE! Lots of crab meat and very little filler, so it was delicious. Thanks to lucien for the recommendation.
After lunch Bob and I drove to a Subaru dealer in Silver Spring, but all the dealerships were closed, so we were only able to check out a few cars from the outside.
They didn't have any 2010 Subarus at all, so I didn't get to see that 2nd red color used for the 2010 Forester. Bummer.
We dropped by a Mazda dealer so I could show Bob the new Sunburst Yellow color for the Miata (gorgeous, but not available in hard top form).
Then we snapped a pic of the new Cube, a quirky but neat little car.
After that we even hit the BMW dealer at the same auto park and were able to get in an unlocked Z4 hardtop. Very nice but those things have grown in to big and heavy GTs now.

I liked that they had Old Bay Seasoning in salt shakers at every table. :shades:
Hey, there's another excuse to go back...

Hey Bob.. I think our cars are the same color.. Is yours a really, really dark gray? (obviously, I don't remember the name of it..).
Last night, I had Crawfish Etouffee for dinner.. At our local Cajun/Creole establishment.. Just like being in Nawlins!
