I strongly suspect the belt was never replaced. The car had 108,000 on it when I bought it from a friend, and it has 146,000 on it now. Of course, I should have replaced it along with all the other basic maintenance stuff I did to it (along with other repair stuff like replacing the ball joints). Unfortunately, I just didn't think about it. From what I can tell, the maintenance schedule recommends "inspection" of the belt at 120,000 miles.

Inspection? Hah - no, just replace it! That thing was so worn out; I'm really thankful that it broke when it did rather than half way to Anchorage, or in the middle of winter, etc. As it was, it picked a convenient area on a beautiful, warm (for Fairbanks in early April) day.

Colin - It certainly could have received some water contact, as the bottom portion of the belt is not sealed to the outside and the engine sits low in the car (which sits low itself!).

It's non-interference, so the replacement schedule is "when it breaks", i.e. now. ;)
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Well, you still got another 28k miles out of it! It should be good for another 140k! ;)

    Nice pics- looks beautiful!

The Escort is back to running. It all went together this morning quite smoothly; it took about 45 minutes to install the belt, test it to confirm the timing was good, and then put everything else back in place. It sure is a much easier job than a Subaru engine!

Tom, that's true: I got a few more miles out of it than if I had replaced it on a schedule. The belt came with a sticker (like those oil reminder stickers at quick-lube shops) that had a line for install mileage and a line for replacement mileage. I listed 260,000 as the replacement mileage, but somehow I don't think it will be me that gets it there.... ;)

I'm guessing the engine might make it to a quarter million miles, but something else will break that will keep you from driving it that long.

    Hi AJ,

    How are you?

Are you and Bob coming up to NY this year for the show?

    Charlie
  • css1css1 Member Posts: 247
I too have been away from this forum way too long. Hope everyone is well. The last time i was on was right before the DC show. I would have liked to have gone but I have been way to busy. The economy has me working long hours just to keep my head above water. My younger one goes to college in the fall.
Anybody going up to the NY show next week.

Bob, AJ, It would be good to see you again. And for everyone else it would be great to put a face to the name.

Hi Charlie. My plans are still up in the air. I've been told that I'm getting an invite from SOA to see the new Impreza on the 19th in NY at a special preview showing, but as of now don't have it. I do have a press pass to the show which is only good on the 20th and 21st, which are press days.

I'll be in Puerto Rico all of next week for spring break, taking the kids and all.

Work is keeping my ultra-busy, we're in the middle of a big move and then we have a large event (300+ people) in early May, so I told Bob I didn't think I could get any more time off than I've already taken.

We went to Philly to see the Impreza concept, and while I'd like to see the production model, the early pics haven't inspired me to neglect work nearly as much as the concept did.

Actually, I'll be in South Carolina on business until Easter Sunday.

I would not be able to go until the 27th.

Time goes by so fast these days.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm back Monday, but I need to go back to the office to get the post-move issues resolved. That will be a crazy week.
  • css1css1 Member Posts: 247
I guess we won't know until that week. I'll post if and when I know I'm going.

Until then I would like to wish everybody a happy Easter and Passover.

    Hey Charlie,

I'm thinking if I go, I may park at MetroPark and take the NJ Transit train in. Any thoughts on that?

The bioluminescent kayaking tour near Fajardo is highly recommended Juice. The kids would love it.
  • css1css1 Member Posts: 247
    Hi Bob,

That's a great idea....Off peak the trains to NY Penn Station are - at worst - 35-40 min. apart.

Is there enough parking, and is it (relatively) safe? Parking costs?

    Bob
  • css1css1 Member Posts: 247
It is relatively safe - I live in this township.
I'm not aware of costs - I will find out for you.

    Sounds ... unique/fun/bizarre/hilarious?

I'll have to check that out. I've been thinking about a kayak tour for our Key West trip, but this sounds good, too.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Bizarre but educational. Kids need to be 6 for most tours. Better if you can hit it during a new moon. I liked it more than anything else we did in PR on our trip down there last Feb.

The best day we had on our trip to France last year IMHO was a day kayaking down the Gard river which took us under the Pont du Gard.
    image
It is one of the most famous surviving architectural landmarks from the Roman period of Southern France aka Occitane and a UNESCO world heritage site.
We initially balked due to the 6 year old age requirement, but after talking with the proprietors, they happily let our 5 year old go along. We weren't worried since she swims like a fish and won gold in freestyle and silver in backstroke at the Northern BC regional swimming championships for under 7 year olds last Summer. Yes I'm bragging.
Anyway, most of the family considered that our best day of the trip. We packed food and spent about 4 hours on the river. We pulled up on a sandbar for lunch and swimming. It was a beautiful hot sunny day.
When we came around the bend to the bridge, we all stopped and laid back as the current carried us very slowly beneath the structure. Going under the bridge was just indescribable.

....you're thrilled to have found an OEM roof bar system for taking the kids biking! :D

Seriously though, the V70R has preset mounting points inside the door frames that are meant to receive a nipple on the OEM roof bar feet (made by Thule). They don't make them any more (everything is plastic these days) so I've been trolling the Volvo boards for months. FINALLY a set came up last week in MA, and they are now here at my house. Just got back from the bike shop with 2 top-of-the-line Thule carrier trays. Tomorrow morning I'll get the bars/feet cleaned up and rehab'ed, then get it all up on the car and take everyone to the local rail-trail.

Just so you know, those pics are stolen. But it is exactly as it looked that day. Our camera spent almost the entire time in the dry bag for obvious reasons. Kayaks, 90 degree weather, 4 eleven year old boys and one Dad who failed to grow up meant for all manner of water fights. Cole's (aka our 4th son) Dad seemd to stay out of the melee. I'll see if I can upload some that we took. More family bliss and less WOW. The river level shot is actually taken from the back (downstream) side where there is a little rocky beach.

    Good morning Bob

This is the link (If I did it correctly) to the Metro Park parking site:

    link title

It's fairly inexpensive but fills up fast with commuters so I don't know what space availability is the middle of the day.

Deb and I were headed to a party at a friend's house Saturday night when the weather got real ugly. In fact it was so bad we decided to turn around and head home. Good thing we did as a tornado touched down just down on the road we were on, and in the direction we were originally headed. This was part of that same storm system that just ripped through the South.

  • colin_lcolin_l Member Posts: 591
Wow, near miss! Hope all SC members and their friends/family are safe.

We have tornados all the time in Kansas but the rest storms in/near NC were especially severe.

We didn't have the weather that many had, but I did take a trip from South Bend to Indianapolis on Saturday for an annual state teachers' union meeting. On the way down it wasn't 'too' bad. Not much rain, and only a few 'mild' gusts. The trip home was another story. I was traveling north with very strong west winds and gusts. AND rain all the way home. Made for an interesting trip as my car felt like it was trying to go 'sideways' at times. Other cars were having similar difficulties with the gusts. Was VERY glad to get home!

...to my son Dave, who this afternoon just got hired as an optometrist! It's a pretty large practice with several locations in the DC 'burbs. He'll split his time working in their Waldorf, MD and California, MD offices.

He graduates from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (just outside of Philly) in about 3 weeks, and will be starting this new job in July, after a vacation to West Coast. So, we'll have a "doctor" in the family! Can you say proud papa?

    Bob
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
good for him ... and you are justified in being a proud papa!!!
  • colin_lcolin_l Member Posts: 591
Very nicely done!! You should be proud.

Edmunds: We need a "like", "+1" or "thumbs up" button. It's 2011. Please? :)

Congrats - now all he has to do is save his pennies and buy out a practice...

Congrats Bob. It must be nice not having to worry about kids financially!

Didn't make the kayak tour (sold out until the day after we left!) but had a good time anyway.

Saw a Forester and a WRX, but not many subies there, old or new.

Odd thing is - the dominant brand there seemed to be Mitsubishi, with the Lancer the most popular car by far. Perhaps it was because I stayed in San Juan and had 2 rental car lots right near me, but I saw more Mitsubishis in a week than I had in my lifetime!

We rented a Lancer for a day, boring base model 2.0l CVT, and enjoyed the sights more than the car. I liked going off the reservation and checking out where the locals go.

Overall very safe, easy travel (no passports), no currency issues since they use the US dollar. The US Park Service manages the Fort "El Morro" so that was a highlight (clean, A/C, and free the week we visited).

The other highlight was the weather (81-87 degrees and no rain), the clean water (you can see your toes on low tide), and the fine sand on the beaches.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
I think we went to Fort San Crisobal as it is closer to downtown and where the big ships dock.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We only did El Morro, as it supposedly has the better views. I didn't disappoint.

It was HOT that day though, wow. The kind of sun you need a parasol for.

I swear, at times you had no shadow. The sun was directly above.

    Didn't make the kayak tour

Bummer. My wife reminds me that she made the reservation before we left town. In fact, the guest house owner tried to reserve for us but wasn't able to, but my wife managed to track a company down online. I just chalked it up to the "mañana" syndrome, but we were there in a dead time.

We wound up circumnavigating the island and I got tired of driving. But I would have been bored on the beach after a couple of days too.

We went on a lot of toll roads using the transponder EZ Pass and we never got an additional bill from Charlie Car rental. That was a nice surprise.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yup, beach was nice, but we got too much sun and needed a change of scenery. We did Old Town one day, then rented a car the next, and went exploring. By the 3rd day we did a little beach time, and rented a Jet Ski, which the kids loved.

Time flies when you're on vacation.

you guys know about our 'record snows' in January ... then the entire spring has remained VERY cool (and mostly wet) ...

FINALLY last week it went from wondering if spring would ever arrive to almost record HIGHS for the days ... a few days last week it was in the mid 80's and it felt as if we went from late winter directly to summer ...

the last 2 days .. well .. back into the 'cold' weather ... right now at almost 1:00 pm it is a wonderful FORTY-THREE degrees!

I'm tired of the sweaters and jackets and socks and .... well .. you get it ...
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
similar here, just a bit north of you in SE WI..... today's soccer game for Brogan was a chilly 43F with 40mph wind gusts. One of the weather guys on local TV here has been talking about recurring cycles/patterns, this being one of them with the warmup, then storms, then cold.

That's all we're getting here. Yesterday, today, and the next 5 days.

my oldest stepson mowed our grass on Friday morning after the brief rains on Thursday, and before the deluge began ... I swear I can SEE it growing!

Five days of overcast, rain and chilly weather here. It rained through the second half of my son's lacrosse game yesterday. They were down by one with 2 minutes to go and they tied it up - some parents would've been happy with loss since they had to go to overtime. In the end they won in sudden death.

I overseeded my lawn last weekend so I'm thrilled getting rain. I saw little sprouts in the bare areas this morning!!

Juice - lucky with the garden. Here in New Englas, Memorial Day weekend is the typically planting time.

Planting time is on the New Moon in June here.

Beautiful sunny day here, and a balmy 48 degrees. Just got back from walking to town to mail a package. :)
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,776
That's what I was thinking, too, Rob. Planting is still a couple weeks away.

In a nice twist of fortune, though, the weather here is beautiful. It is supposed to hit 65F today, and very little wind.
