Good friend of mine is a retired Ford manufacturing engineer. He worked in the local transmission plant for his entire career, and just retired after 40 years of dutiful service to the blue oval.
He’s as straight laced and upstanding as any person you’ll find. We used to be golfing buddies until he couldn’t swing his club more than ⅓ of the way on the back swing. Around 5 years ago he had his shoulder replaced. Helped a little, but now his other shoulder is going through the same issue.
He’s looking at buying my electric snow blower (if I stick around these parts, I’m going to go back to a gas one, smaller and easier to maneuver). He came over last night to look at it.
There was something different about him and the way he acted, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. He was certainly quieter than usual. Anyway, right next to the snow blower sit my golf clubs. He hadn’t swung one in over a year because of his shoulder. He picked a 3 wood out of the bag, removed the head cover, walked outside and gave it a swing. I had not seen him swing that well in several years.
I know he didn’t have another surgery, as I see him probably a couple of times per week. After giving him the inevitable interrogation, he fessed up that he’s now a “medicinal marijuana” user.
First, never would have thought that of him. 2nd, I asked how a person of his “leanings” ever agreed to try marijuana. And lastly, how it even happened for him to try such a different medical solution (can you call it medical)?
I quizzed him if he had a “dealer”? He said medical marijuana can be prescribed by a Dr. for a variety of ailments. For him, it was for chronic pain in his shoulder. Eventually, he said he would have to have surgery if the pain became to great. But, for the time being, the marijuana was working. He was still trying to get dosage right (apparently the Drs only write the script and “suggest” dosages, unlike other prescription drugs). So, he was a little quiet as he said he was getting used to the effects. Eventually, I guess he’ll get to a “happy” medium in dosage. He said he’s sleeping better, too.
In short, he believes it’s a miracle drug. Not so sure about that. But, he’s in pretty good shape right now.
There are even dispensaries around town (something else I did not know). He doesn’t go to Walgreens, CVS or one of those places. He told me of the one he goes to, and I’ve been past it many times, but did not know it even existed as it has on of those holistic names that I’d never associate with marijuana.
How did I miss all of this? I’ve lived in Ohio for over 25 years.

Several patients who go to the same GI clinic I do use for helping with pain related to Crohn's Disease inflammation and have it help with appetite. It has far less in terms of side effects than some of the more heavy narcotic pills with less of the addictive properties.
To each their own.

Since it has become legal here there are various products that use it available through pharmacies by prescription. Some but not all of them are CBD-based which is what is supposed to be the anti-inflammatory compound. But I was looking at the list available through my pharmacy and about half of them are mostly THC, which is what gets you high. In those cases I suppose it is like booze, let it affect your state of mind enough and you don't care about the pain, but good luck functioning normally.
I can tell you that the legal industry here has not proven to be the gold mine that the sharpies who bought into it thought it would be. It was unlikely that the stock values that were wildly optimistic at the start could ever be supported by earnings since there were so many companies trying for a piece of the pie. It turned out that their product in many cases was overpriced and not as good as people could buy in the street, and a bunch of them have fallen flat on their faces. My former employer is also the retailer here for it (a misguided choice by our government IMO) and my former colleagues there tell me those involved in it are an even more craptastic bunch than those in the booze business, which is saying something. Probably not surprising considering that up to a couple of years ago it was all outside the law.

But, you give me an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie with some mixed in? Regardless of the marijuana ingredients, I'm devouring that cookie.
I'm fascinated by this. For my entire life, I was told it was a gateway drug, told to stay away from it (which as a dutiful parochial school student, I obeyed) as all sorts of bad things would happen to me.
Now, it's legal. Moreover, I didn't even know it. And, from a scientific study of one person, is effective. He didn't seem "high" to me, as I noted when confronted with young "stoners". He was just a little more calm an quiet than usual.
I can only imagine what it's like in states where it's legal for recreational use.
So given that, I am probably not the best person to answer your question. However I can tell you that I can spot a weed smoker when I encounter them in store aisles just by their smell. To me it is not pleasant so I go out of my way to get away from them. I do not remember that being a problem prior to legalization here. But that is minor compared to what I sense on our roads. The number of people who smoke it while driving since it has become legal 18 months ago is shocking. I smell it a lot, not every time I am driving but often enough, and even more when I am doing yardwork in front of my house and cars stop at my corner. I wonder how it affects their driving. I know there are conflicting studies on it but I have to think it slows reaction times.

For example, depending on the laws for each state, driving is restricted for those who have had seizures. How many people would surrender driving privileges when they receive a medical marijuana script?
Maybe a restriction on driving might weed out recreational users.
There have been studies, so that one doc just isn't looking hard enough. It is, however, IMHO, for a select population and not a cure-all for which some seem to try to use it or prescribe it.
A few years ago, I was working on the launch of a spray, like breath freshener. It didn't get approved because the testing was flawed. They chose to allow only end-stage cancer patients who were already on multiple opioids. The plan was to get this first approved as an add-on pain therapy to try to reduce opioid use in this population. Somehow, it did not occur to them that this population is so far down the path that the small boost from a plant-based medicinal spray would be akin to following up 2 oxycontin with 2 advil. I knew it would fail from the beginning when we were pitching it and I read the study data. And it is a shame because it could have been a benefit for those needing mild pain relief where NSAIDs aren't enough and prevent them from having to resort to opioids. Of course, in medical terms, this was AGES ago and things have and continue to rapidly change.

Not sure what the laws are here in OH, but I would imagine it's similar to those who drink and drive. I do see folks blow out billows of smoke from cars driving along. Up until now, I thought they were smoking e-cigs. Maybe I'm being naive on that point, though.
I guess you follow the money. If there's enough money to be made, anything can be legalized.
My friend did say it was somewhat of a racket. He had to pay the state $50 to be an official (and legal) marijuana user. And, his surgeon wouldn't write a script for it. So, he had to go to another physician to get the script. Physician only takes cash, as does the dispensary.
For the physician, no paperwork to file, no insurance companies to deal with, just write a script. He said the MD spent about 20 minutes with him going over his physical health, his shoulder pain, with no x-rays taken, just a couple of questions. This guy is in a nondescript office. Sounds a little shady to me. His office visit was $199...cash.
So, between the state and the Dr, he was into it for $249 even before he bought his weed. I'll have to ask him how much that costs. Can't be cheap, I would imagine.
Again, fascinating marketplace that I was insulated from, and know little about.
He indulges in it too, and is smart enough not to drive etc while enjoying it. I have no issue with it, and am baffled that some still whine about it with harder drugs exploding virtually unchecked, especially in some parts of the country. I can't stand the stuff when smoked anyway, as I don't like the smell nor smoke - but it is no worse than cigarette smoke that also seems to addle the minds of some, yet has always been legal because of the golden rule. One has to question why some things are legal and why some are not, examine at the credibility of those making and supporting the legislation, and follow the money.
The bar is so low for local drivers that I suspect pot use might lead to some issues, but might not make things significantly worse.

I am concerned about GG's friend who has trouble moving in a range of motion without the marijuana.
It's got to be that using something to ease the discomfort is hurting something. The pain is a warning from the body.
IF the discomfort or pain is a symptom that something doesn't like moving in that manner, using marijuana and moving the arm through that discomfort zone surely is doing some kind of damage.
I liken it to the young "kid" who sold my wife's Samsung tablet at Best Buy. She mentioned she's on pain pills and just wanted to sit where she was. He said he had two bad knees that needed replacement (at age 25 I'd guess). In college he ran track and they kept injecting his knees before the meets. The end result was terminal damage to his knees. I hoped Best Buy had a good healthcare plan for him. He was a good guy.

That is a real danger with edibles though. They come in all kinds of candy forms....gummies, chocolate, brownies etc., so keep out of sight, or locked up if you have children. Additionally, it takes 30 minutes to an hour to feel the effects of edibles. So, some may overdose thinking they just haven't consumed enough product.

My primary care Doc probably would not give me a scrip for marijuana because I think it's against his religion or something. But he can refer me to a colleague who could. I see him next week and I will discuss it with him.🤪😜😛🤓

I don't doubt that there are medical benefits of cannabis. Still have doubts that those medical benefits do not come with impairments to driving. So far as I know there are no restraints from purchasing/using weed with high THC content for those who qualify for medical cannabis use.
Although that may not even matter.
There's been a study of real-world users of legal market cannabis products published in JAMA Psychiatry on June 10. Flower users purchased a product containing either 16% or 24% THC the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Concentrate users were assigned to a product containing either 70% or 90% THC.
Regardless of what type or potency of cannabis participants used, their self-reports of intoxication, or "feeling high," were remarkably similar, as were their measures of balance and cognitive impairment.
"Surprisingly, we found that potency did not track with intoxication levels. While we saw striking differences in blood levels between the two groups, they were similarly impaired."
L. Cinnamon Bidwell, lead author, assistant professor in the Institute of Cognitive Science
Another surprising finding was this:
"People in the high concentration group were much less compromised than we thought they were going to be," said coauthor Kent Hutchison, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at CU Boulder who also studies alcohol addiction. "If we gave people that high a concentration of alcohol it would have been a different story."
The authors caution that the study examined regular users who have learned to meter their use based on the desired effect, and does not apply to inexperienced users. Those users should still be extremely cautious with concentrates, said Hutchison.
I think the gateway drug business was less about the weed itself as it was the type of person who would seek out a skeevy dealer to get it back in the day, thus being open to the use of illicit substances in general, and who then was afforded an opportunity to purchase an assortment of other "good stuff" from said person.

When I was in the hospital for my liver resection due to malignant tumors 4 years ago, they put me on morphine drip and later Demerol IV. I was hallucinating for days and was nervous and jumpy. Then, once my pain decreased to tolerable levels, trying to come off those drugs was very difficult.
That's why I hate taking narcotics due to the problems they cause me. I am not a good candidate for becoming a drug addict, that's for sure. I hate those drugs and what they do to me.
