I've been following the saga with interest.
I wonder if your wife had any choice in the matter after all that hypnotic suggestion "You will buy a Subaru, you will buy a Subaru..." Poor woman will be able to get some decent sleep at last.
Cheers
Graham
Congrats Juice. What, no pictures?
-Brian
Never got her into a WRX, I take it?
Bob
I gotta say, too, that I'm impressed with the way your wife attacked this decision with an interesting blend of an open mind and a very sure grasp of what she really wanted. She seems like someone who is good at making up her mind.
Way to go!
Steve
You might want to think about adding the Subie 15" alloys (shown on the L sedan in the Legacy brochure); they look very nice on the L.
Bob
Heather
You can breath now =D
Heather- good to know all is well. Bummer, y'all just bought it
-Dave
She sat in a WRX, but refused to drive it. I'm sure she was afraid. Very afraid. ;-)
No photos yet since I'm at home (slow modem) and usually down load those from work, but I'll get one. It's just like the wagon in the 2002 Legacy catalog, if you have that, minus the alloys Bob mentioned.
Already a cool story. We go Home Depot tonight to get a carpet for the living room. My wife asks how much for delivery, I say hold up - I bet it'll fit. But we had the kid, hmm. Slid it in on the passenger side, from the dash, over both rows of chairs, just squeezing inside the close hatch. They both sat behind me, in the 60 section of the 60/40 split, both belted. I don't think even Sandy could pull that off inside, because the Legacy is longer. I'd have used the roof rack with Sandy.
With the 626? Not a chance.
More initial impressions: lighting is OK, but not as good as my Forester's. Absolute zero defect delivery, right down to 32psi in all four tires, and a brimming full tank of gas.
I love that outside temp guage. Hey, it's 56 degrees, cool. Remote keyless entry uses horn instead of lights like on the Forester. We turned the horn feature off.
Does not feel like 3345 pounds. I looked it up and hardly believed it. It's 105 lbs lighter than the GT, at least. I'm glad about the 60 series tires, too. The Camry had 65s, not as sporty. The CR-V and Highlander had 70s that would likely roll over onto the sidewalls if paisan or hutch drove the thing, God forbid!
'Twas a great day.

Congrats to a job well done by both you and your wife!
Sounds like she almost had her heart set on an "L" from the start.
As for lighting, I believe the L gets H7s which put out only mediocre lights. You might want to think of a driving light upgrade in the future.
Enjoy,
Ken
Heather-Sorry to hear about your fender bender, and so soon after getting it. Glad to hear everyone is alright, that's the main thing.
Mark
Do you think that your new Legacy will get a name?
Heather- Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you're OK. I've been enjoying reading your posts about your Outbacks.

Bob
Heather - Glad you're ok.

I'm assuming the i-clubber that works at SoA arranged it.
Alright Patti! Time to share the love with the Edmunds folks!

My first entry is: Serena
The soft green hue of the Wintergreen paint, the quieter ride of the L and the functionality of the design brings images of serenity.

I did clean up the Forester today; took it to a commercial power wash where they recycle water. We still have watering and car washing restrictions at home. Cleaned the interior plastics as well. Got the OEM roof rack off and the Yakima crosstops on for kayak season - though it remains to be seen just how much paddling I'll get to do this year.
juice: Congrats on new purchase. I must say I'm a little surprised, but by predicting a Bean I at least got the body style right ;-). You should definitely think about picking up some take-off WRX 16" wheels and shoe them with nice summer rubber - heck, even take 'em with RE92s. I think the missus could be swayed given the bargain you got on the L.
Colin: Will miss your regular posts now that you've joined the roundel crowd. Learned a lot about Subies from you in a little time.
Dennis: Haven't heard from you since before Easter. Will drop you an e-mail to see how the SC trip went.
Pat: Hope you're at the summer place by now and so not reading this ;-).
Anyone: Last chat I participated in, someone posted that the new GMC Envoy variant would have a Studebaker Wagonaire-like rear sliding roof. Does anyone have links to the photo? My Stude friends are interested.
Thanks,
Ed
Bob
She will like the wagon, no doubt... the space spoils you in no time - I was single and had a 4-door Accord years ago, so I can relate to the practical side of the ledger.
Don't rush the name - let the karma sink in first.
Cheers!

You may remember that I agonized over the L or a base OB, finally settling on the OB. One of the reasons was the headlamps. I believe that the L is unique in the 2 bulb system, all others use a split lens design with 4 bulbs. Still, the price cannot be beat for what you get...
Drive safely,
Steve
I managed to nearly lock myself in the back seat... I didn't know the child lock was set on one door, OOPS! Fortunately, it was NOT set on the other rear door so I didn't have to climb over the front seats to get out. Not having kids, other than my cat Gray, I don't think of those things.
Speaking of the cat, I introduced him to the new car this evening. He didn't seem too unhappy, he purred in the rear seat... although I'm afraid his preference was to leave the car as soon as he could. In his mind, car = vet.
I have to get used to all this fancy stuff. The old car had a little, like cruise control, tilt wheel and it would turn the headlights out if you left them on, but this one has everything! I'm still finding stuff, like the light in back. I was wondering why Subaru didn't have a light in the cargo area like my Camry did, and then today, as I disassembled the center seatbelt which I'll only need occasionally for the cat's carrier, I looked up and saw it!
I am doing my best to break it in easy, I'd like to have this car a long time. It's wintergreen metallic and my roommates think it is very cool! It might be the only Subaru in the neighborhood.
Cynthia
And of course, double congrats on your most excellent taste in color choice (she says while smiling fondly at her wintergreen bean)
Jillian...STILL waiting for the bean's name to come.....

Lots and lots of water. Bat put his car in the lot and rode along with some amigo which eventually hydrolocked, but we manage to clear out the cylinders and get him going.

I finally figured out how to do that! On my Nikon there is a mode to do the mosaic but didn't realize I had to have it in "full-screen" mode for the size pic. You hit the button once and it shoots 16 pics and mosaics them for yah, saving it as one image.I need to practice with it a bit more to get it so I can stay with the object as it moves.

John
My Forester is different. The lights blink, but there is no sound. I actually much prefer that.
paisan: another hydrolock, eh? Seems someone gets stuck every time. Glad to hear they fixed it so quickly.
Cynthia: congrats! You beat me by about 12 hours. Nice color! :-)
Name? Hmm, that's tough. I think she has to talk to us, she'll say. Serena (Williams) would have been a Black Granite Pearl GT (athletic).
H7 bulbs, eh? Moonroof for Mother's Day, you think? Maybe rims for our anniversary in October, and sways for her B-day next year. Though honestly I'm not sure she'll be into modifying it the way I do.
-juice
Her old 626 was loaded, so she gave up leather (unheated), 15" alloys, power moonroof. That's it I think. The cool oscillating vents and lit vanity mirrors, too. It was a V6 but with 164hp and 160 lb-ft of torque are less on both accounts than the Subie. Plus they recommended premium fuel, and mileage was 21/26.
The Subie has more power, more torque, 4 times the luggage space, and better highway mileage on cheaper fuel. The seats are less slippery and more comfortable. All 3 rear seat belts have locking retractors (a HUGE plus for booster seats).
The wheels are steel but the same diameter. We had a cassette player on both cars, but my wife's music is mostly on tape so that's fine, she didn't even want a CD because my Miata's skips.
The Legacy adds other features: AWD, outside temp gauge, and 2nd trip odo plus digital readout. Struts lift the hatch back instead of goose neck hinges that crushed groceries on the sedan. Under the hood, much easier to find serviceable areas (all yellow). Better cup holders for different size cups. More storage cubbies, and bigger too.
Tether anchors - I love 'em! They are right behind the head rests, an excellent location. The 626 did not have any at all. Also the Legacy has ISOFIX anchors, thankfully. The 626 also had the early airbags that went off with full force, and she's pregnant so it was nice to get the 2nd generation type.
I'll think of more. So she basically gave up 4-5 things and gained about a dozen. Easy trade.
We may tint the windows again, her 626 had that aftermarket. Plus the moonroof, we'll see.

If so, you'll probably want to put a tow hitch on the new Legacy.
Also, any concerns about taking the new Legacy out on the beach, like you did with the Forester? The only things I would be worried about would be decreased ground clearance and reduced approach and departure angles, as compared to the Forester.
Bob
So was your wife driving this weekend or you? How's the L clutch compared to the Forester?

ISOFIX - Still having a hard time finding booster seats with the ISOFIX connections. If you find them, please let me know.

VDC wagon, WRX, LL Bean and another WRX...life does certainly sound good!
I'm certainly going to be interested in hearing your comments comparing the 5-speed to 4EAT on a WRX. I don't know anyone who will have that extensive of a back-to-back comparison. Too bad you couldn't wait for a 2003 when the sport-shift is introduced. ;-)
Ken
I don't think I'd take the Legacy on the beach, mostly because I don't have to and don't feel like pushing my luck.
We've both driven it. So yes I'm a switch-hitter. :-)
The clutch is smoother, but I'm still getting used to the throttle, which seems more sensitive.
Bean and an auto WRX sound like fun, Patti, and should give you a well rounded view of the lineup.
