What's my starting salary (6 figures at least!), and what kind of benefits (vacations, etc.) do I get? Also, what about a company car (a WRX of course), and an expense account?
Dave: Yeah, that would have been the logical thing to do, but I had to be back in the office this week. The upside is that I rack up on my miles.
Dennis: I thought Euro-spec wagon looks better on paper. The one outside the dealer was a black wagon. For some reason, it looked too "rounded".
Let's see, what do I keep in my Forester:
- Tire gauge - Spare headlight bulb - First aid kit - Meguiar's Quik Detailer Mist - A couple detailing cloths - A stack of napkins in the center console - Cell phone headset - Sun shade - Bungee cords
Stuff that I add when I go on long roadtrips
- 12V air compressor - Extra CDs - Cellphone charger - Even more napkins - Chains and ice scraper (winter only)
As for what I carry in the car: In the back: Compressor, first aid kit, sweatshirt, tire gauge, work gloves, tow rope, fix-a-flat, flares, power steering fluid, nylon cord, jumper cables, clip board and pen, throw-away camera, Subaru tool kit, Clorox disposable wipes.
Up front: Cell phone charger (2-one for me, one for the wife), cell phone headset, mag lite, razor blade, scotch tape,cd's (3 springsteen at the moment), screwdriver, spare fuses, double cigarette lighter adapter, note pad, radar detector, maps in both pockets, and handicap parking permits for when driving my parents.
Hmmm, Subaru manual(s) and tools, digital tire gauge, pen tire gauge, EZ pass with bag, wheel lock "key" (2 of them in glove compartment and cargo area), sunglasses, cell phone/charger/hands free kit, notpad and pen for auto log (gas, tire rotation, oil changes, etc), CDs, air compressor, flares, flashlight, first aid kit, blanket, sweater, ice scraper (2), and umbrella. Need to add more tools, wood piece for tire changing and the wife.
Bob - congrats ol powerful one.
BTW - got the ECU reprogram letter in the mail yesterday. Need to set up an apptmt.
I meant that in a nice way (we spend little time together with both of us working and 3 kids). How about "wife hit husband over head with wooden piece while changing tire on Subaru she thinks he loves more than her".

Right off the top of my balding head... Glovebox - all the usual glovebox stuff... plus extra keys for the motorhome, earplugs for the mower at school...
Tapes - who knows of what or who, lots of napkins from the last trip to the burger stand in the center console... plus some biohazard bags from the diaper days... flashlight, clean rags, phone headset, spare pull-up (see biohazard note above) in the door panels...
Milkbox in the "way-far back" for toys, lawn leaf bags for recycling at work, ice scraper/snow brush still loitering, Mother's clay bar kit, still unused... and a baseball!
Rubbermaid box for paper towels, road flares, jumper cables, gloves, lugwrench, spare oil, etc...
phone book under the RF seat, 2 booster seats, an ever-present hat (see bald head note above), shades, Altoids, paper/pen, phone charger... and don't forget the frequent-flyer cards from the espresso stands!
In roughly two months with my new Forester I've accumulated the following:
CDs that change occasionally. Will have to look to see what's in there now.
Baseball glove (for softball games, and still hoping for that foul ball at a Rockies game or Sky Sox game).
SPF-30 sunscreen, mostly for the baseball games.
Parking pass for Sky Sox games.
Army blanket.
Umbrella; haven't needed it yet.
Gold C Coupon book (two-for one coupons at lots of local restaraunts).
Sunglasses, when I remember to leave them in the compartment instead of on my desk.
Garage door opener.
Running clothes (for the run I always plan to do during the day; didn't make it today).
Water (new appreciation for that drink since I started running).
Growler, empty (half gallon jug ready for refill at one of the local microbreweries; stored in the well in the middle of the spare).
Cell phone charging cord & power splitter.
Extra sweatshirt and jacket (usually stuffed in the rear cubbyholes).
Registration, proof of insurance, owners manual, etc.
Other stuff, such as jumper cables and flat-fix haven't made it over from my Civic yet. Civic's lights don't shut off automatically, so it probably has more need for the cables anyway.
Flashlight, Black & Decker rechargeable battery (in pocket behind drivers seat).
Ever heard of "The Next Generation Life Hammer" (LHNG)? These things look good in the marketing copy; do EMTs use them to cut seat belts (or for other uses)?
After many months of research, test drives and lots of reading of messages from members of Subaru Crew I finally have purchased an Outback Wagon (Base model) and I'm really impressed with it. (The Outback beat out the CRV, RAV4, Escape, Highlander and Tribute.)
I've had the Outback for about 6 weeks and have averaged 27-28 mpg. The H-4 engine with automatic has more than enough pep for our needs and the ride comfort is excellent.
Many thanks to you for the information that you have shared regarding your Subaru experiences.
A Boy Scout is always Prepared. Having owned a lot of old cars, I got used to carrying my tools with me. Now on the trail I've actually used almost everything in my truck at one time or another so It's easier to just keep it in there.
Mike: Couple of our trucks carry similar items for just such a thing... seat belts & air bags in particular. The hammer is designed to function like a spring punch breaking windows. We try not to break glass over our patients, so we roll 'em down if we can, or use the jaws on the whole door or roof PRN. Might come in handy if you've just driven off a bridge into the drink, though.
Added a pair of vacation days as the kids were off (didn't use all of our snow days this year), so I am way behind in my reading. Sounds like most people made it back intact!
Congrats Bob on your new, highly regarded and well compensated position in our community.
Ross & Ed: Beth & I loved our trip out to the Olympics & Vancover Island. As much as we like the Hudson Valley (NY), Beth alternately wants to some day retire to Port Townsend or Victoria. Both have tremendous draw...
OK, so I got real world prices. The same dealer sells the VDC and Highlander, so it's a fair comparison. They have a VDC for $27,766, and the cheapest 4x4 V6 Highlanger with leather is $32,595, and that's not even a Limited!
So that would lower Edmunds score for the Highlander down to 82.6, instead of 92. A significant difference, IMO.
Then consider the VDC's content score would jump from 50 to 70 when you factor the two 12 volt outlets and the 6CD changer that is now standard.
I re-calculated according to Edmunds weighted scoring, and I get VDC 82.73, Highlander 83.75.
I bet if we priced a Limited the VDC would even win. MhuhuhuhuhWAAAAH! ;-)
Holy Cow! I cannot believe that I really have this much stuff crammed into this car! I guess that is what being a Boy Scout will do to you. A quick check revealed:
Center Console: cell phone & accessories, touch up paints (timberline & titanium), car wash & deli coupons
Scattered: EZ pass, CDs & tapes - mine & kids
Glove Box: Owners package, reg & insurance for car & utility trailer, multiple maps, pens and notebook, tire pressure gauge, 4in1 screwdriver, roof rack T-30 driver, mini-fluorescent/halogen flashlight, matches, wet naps & wipes, Swiss Army knife, antacids
Door pocket: sunglasses, garage opener
Back seat: child booster, kids quilt, umbrellas
Under front seats: "The Club", hand held cb radio
Cargo tray & tire well: Jumper cables, 140watt / 120v inverter, trailer hitch draw bar / locks / accessories, a decent tool kit (mix of metric & SAE), duct & electrical tape, rope / bungees / tiedowns, paper towels, flares & hazard triange, fuses & puller, mini first aid kit, 12v high output spotlight & extension cord, emergency poncho, penetrating oil, can of tire inflator
LH rear compartment: "Gorilla-bar" tool for lug removal, key for wheel locks & spare lugs, fire extinguisher
RH rear compartment: oil & dry gas

Mike S- Good to hear from you. I know you're busy but you can always just drop in and let us know that you're still alive and kicking. After all, we're family too!
I was flipping through my recent issue of CR and came across a comparison of small sedans. They compared the Corolla, Impreza, Protege and Lancer.
CR favored the Corolla, but the Impreza did fairly well. The Impreza received high marks for handling, front seats and quiet ride, but was dinged for it's rear seats. Interestingly, the Impreza was 0.2 seconds slower on the 0-60 compared to the Corolla (10 vs. 9.8 sec).
Ross, I only caught part about your move (you're selling Rufus). Please fill in the blanks (or a URL) (apologies to those that where paying attention in class).
Ken, Impreza slower than a Corolla? How much HP in the Corolla? Both automagic trannies?
The quick version is: I've taken early retirement after 28 years teaching psychology at the same college, I'm moving to Vancouver Island - where I've wanted to live for the last 34 years - at the end of June, and Rufus went to a new home yesterday. The new owner seems quite wonderfully in love with him (he's keeping his name) and she, Carol, *may* be joining the Crew. Thanks for asking. BTW, welcome back! :-)
for 2 weeks, so I won't be chatting tonight. Mods, bear in mind that this is what happens in summer, so don't jump to any conclusions about our participation! :-)
we leave tomorrow, so you all have a good couple of weeks! I'll be thinking of you as I tool around in my Renault Laguna Wagon 5MT A/C Or Similar.
