I will second, third & fourth the comments about best 'animal under the hood story'. Thanks for sharing it, and being kind to the obstinate furball.
I have them living all over my property, even under my front porch. They drive my German Shepard crazy. He does his part for population control (an excellent hunter), but they remain undeterred.
A few years ago my wife was molested by a (possibly rabid) racoon who would not let her out of the car in our driveway (shades of Stephen King - Cujo (sp?)), and finally had to have a State Trooper shoot it. We also occasionally find the air filter packed with mice nesting if a car sits too long. But none of these top your story!!!
The Town Hall will be looking quite different soon, but we hope you will find the changes beneficial. Your subscriptions should not be affected by this change. I'm sure there will be a discussion in News & Views created to address your questions. Once it is available, I will let you know.
WDB: one more question, was the ground hog's name Dave? :-)
That is rather unbelievable. Patti: please ask Subaru to stop using wiring that is flavor coated! That's not the first rodent-under-the-hood story here.
Tom: congrats on the new Bean, and with 2 dogs I'm sure you'll fit right in! Be happy 'cause many people spend $10-15 grand more for roughly the same equipment.
Welcome to the Crew, Jim. Hope you'll stick around and share funny stories with us, though hopefully not more hungry rodents!
Subaru does not use a break-in oil, so if you feel fidgety at 1000 miles, go ahead and change it. I did on my Forester (and still get a consistent 25mpg at 46k miles), though I'll change our new Legacy's oil at 3000 miles.
Oh yeah, buddy, I'll get pix up today I promise. Looks MAH-velous. Even got the full size spare, the whole enchilada. Grand total under $260 for 4 rims, 1 new Potenza tire, mount and balance all 5.
Bob saw it...comments?
BTW the donut is tiny and in my humble opinion unsafe to use with AWD for any significant distance. This upgrade is strongly recommended.

PS I have 3 spare 15" steel rims, if any Crew want to do this I will offer one rim free of charge (on the condition that it be used), you pick up.
Depending on the implementation, the new search could be a good thing. Jonah Brown didn't mention, so I'll ask you: Will you be able to search the content of posts, not just post titles/headers? Don't bother if it's a hassle to find out, I'll be able to see for myself soon.
You can cadmium plate them, Pat did that. The plating doesn't last terribly long though.
Otherwise, a bit of surface rust is to be expected any time a disc brake vehicle sits for more than a few hours. It is gone as soon as the brakes are really used.
juice, Was there additional noise from the rear (possibly noticeable only while riding in the rear seat)? MY00 introduced additional foam insulation to reduce noise. Our MY91 L+ had a toolbox made of plastic, not foam.
Yes, it's true; he has brought balance to the force! Did you ever wonder why Yoda, who has this incredible battle with Count Dooku, flying and spinning like there is no tomorrow, still needs his cane afterwards?
The cad plating does keep the the hubs and edges free of rust.
The plating on the area that the pads contact does wear off quite quickly as Colin mentioned, but it is the rest of the rotor you are interested in anyway, the first application of the brakes removes any surface rust.
There is nothing as ugly as having a nice set of rims and having rusty rotors and scruffy calipers behind them, I painted my calipers with Folitec caliper paint and they still look brand new.
I believe Stephen is also painting his calipers with folitec.
On 2nd thought, the foam doesn't really seem like it would insulate from noise, since it's basically styrofoam painted black. In fact when you move it around it squeeks like crazy.
I imagine if they wanted sound insulation they would have used some sort of textured fabric that would absorb noise better.
Styrofoam may insulate well, but I don't imagine any source of heat back there. More likely it's there to create the two storage compartments on the top.
GT tires ought to fit, a photo in the Mods thread shows there is room left over. Rumor has it Outback tires will not, but Aussie 215/60R16 tires do. That's still probably closer than the donut!
I agree with your comments. I recall an article (Drive?) that said Subaru, in MY00, switched from the tray (and other material in the spare wheel well) from plastic to foam to deaden noise. I remember this because the MY00 foam tray is less sturdy than the MY91 plastic tray.
'reprogramming' notice from Subaru today. So, that orange/red post card from my dealer a few weeks back was indeed legit. Still no notice of this 'reprogramming' on the my.subaru.com site.
Will be calling to make an appointment tomorrow morning.
I was surprised that a dealer can reprogram the ECM. Haven't past reprograms been overnighted to SoA for reprogramming? Do they set the dealers up with this ability temporarily, or is it something they can normally do? Gee, I wish we had an SoA rep here. :-(
Okay - for clarification: This is a Service Campaign vs.recall. Your dealer's will call it a recall because they get paid under the same parameters.
Major difference - we're paying for it, but it is not being mandated by the government (safety or emissions) but we've noticed that our check engine light is sensitive. Re-flashing the ECU will keep it within specs., but stop the annoyance of the light.
It will not affect the performance of the vehicle (hesitation, etc.) from what I've been told.
We provided the dealer with the "tools" and data cards to do the reflashing instead of ECU's coming back to SOA (quicker??).
I hope this helps!
NOTE: I'm checking with the IT group to find out when the VIN's will be loaded into MySubaru.com. I'll let you know.
Patti, thanks for the info. I haven't gotten my notice yet, but sounds like it's coming. Will need my 3000 mile oil change in about a month. Is there any reason not to wait until then?
Enjoying day 4 of the LLBean...still under 200 miles. What a ride. Had the dog guard installed...a snap!!
In the sunlight this afternoon at the dealership, I noted a mild 1" scuff mark on the polyurethane(is that what it is?) on the bottom portion of the drivers side...nailed in the parking lot at work(nuts!)
The body man at the Subaru dealer suggested a mild rubbing compound made by 3M. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions?
ECUs do not necessarily need to be sent back to the manufacturer to be reprogrammed. As with many automotive applications, the source code resides in some form of non-volatile, re-writable memory core (flash memory, EPROM, etc.). With the right tools, as Patti mentioned, the dealer can access the ECU memory, erase the old program and upload a new one.

Call me (or e-mail)direct and we can set a time. How about it, Greg. Join us???

BTW: better include Steve in the list with Paul & Mike. I think we outnumber them at this point ;-)

I've got 4 spare 15" steel rims with RE92s 205/60/15H (5900 miles) on 'em.
and
I may soon have 4 spare 15" alloys from the '98 OB limited.
juice - wanna hold a garage sale?

Dave: I'd have taken one of those rims/tires. Had to buy one new one instead.

I only put one coat of wax on Jim's old rims. After a hand wash. Wish came after a pressure wash. But that's it. I swear. ;-)

I did need to remove the foam insulation with those small compartments, but the cover above it is hard and keeps its shape, so it's out of sight.
I'm quite happy with the way it turned out - and I'll have photos of that soon, too.

Haven't seen the movie though.

Worked out great, Jim. Thanks again. I promise to wax them at least once per year, no less than 30 psi in the tires.
The scene with Yoda had me ROTLMAO, in fact it was the highlight of the movie.
I bet WDB thought he was using "the force" on his throttle cable before he saw that ground hog! LOL

but get that bump on the head checked out.

I think cars affected were:
00-01 legacy/outback with auto trans
01-02 foresters with manual
00-02 impreza with 2.2 and 2.5 liter and manual.
