Got the beer, tunes, the truck, perfect garage. What more could you ask for?

hey everyone... I've been following the board for a week... actually not so much following as reading all the old postings (should I admit that) so I don't ask redundant questions.

My store is I just bought an '02 Quad from my brother in-law who work at a dealership... he made me an offer on his demo I couldn't refuse... so I traded in my Blazer ZR2:( and picked up the Quad. Couldn't be happier with the truck. 4.7 with every option but the bucket seats.

Well... since this is an accessory posting... I took some of your advice and I ordered the Mopar door sills and front and rear floor mats. I have a spray in liner, but I'm not sure what kind. It's nice though and it wraps around the top of the tailgate but not the box sides.

I'm worried because there haven't been too many posts on this page lately.... did everyone move to another posting?
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Gordon, welcome to the Dodge Dakota Owners page(s) and to the various topics. Good luck and enjoy your truck. Yes, the input has slowed down somewhat, but this may be explained as a natural phenomenon, in that there have been so many questions answered and/or explained on a subject that was relatively new to all of the posters simultaneously. Thus, what may appear as lack of interest is actually the result of the learning curve being fulfilled. If you look into the Owners Club, there are several threads that specifically address different items from photos, to problem solving. When the Dodge Dakota thread first appeared, the predominant subject was build schedules, delivery (both time and how) and how to order to best suit individual needs. Be assured that any questions and/or advice sought will be addressed by someone with knowledge.
Again good luck with your new "mount" and let us know the details (color, drive system, etc.).

Now that I'm done reading all the great info for the accessories... which board has the best information about quality and other info? There is three or four here at Edmunds with 4000+ postings.

BTW it's black w/dark slate next gen 4.7L with the auto tranny and the 26C package, which I gather is just about everything. I love everything about it... except it only has rear anti-lock brakes. I didn't see any postings about hooking up anti's for the front discs, or a conversion to disc in the rear. Anyone? I don't even know if it's possible.

Also... after reading the discussions about the spare tire lock... I look under the bed and to my astonishment... there was this nasty black rim with a Goodyear tire on it.... what's that about? Was my rim already stolen and replaced by a cheap imposter?

One last thing... I should probably ask this on the other board, but.... the bed on my truck does not line up with the cab.. it's about 30mm to the passengers side.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Gordon, that is a great color and I'm certain, a good looking truck. Is it 2X4 or 4X4? As for the anti-lock, my truck does not have the front by choice as I ordered the truck from the factory (2000) 4X4, 3.55 rear(s) and five speed along with most of the junk, save the bucket seats, leather and upgraded sound system. I don't know how the 2002 trucks were equipped for the spare, but my truck has the same upgraded wheel and tire for a spare as was on the truck itself. You should ask your brother-in-law that question. I am attaching the titles to other threads that may be accessed and subscribed to and will then appear automatically when the site is accessed. Our host is Karen S, and is the greatest. Enjoy the site.

I forgot the most important part... it's a 4x4 Sport with 26C, heavy duty serv, skid plates, trailer, security, power group, anti-spin diff?, defrost, AM/FM/cas/CD w/infinity speakers w/steering wheel controls.

I can't for the life of my figure out what the rear end is? I can't find it on the window sticker... where else would I look?

I noticed most of the people that post here are over on the quad cab board, so that will be my next board to read
  • glzr2glzr2 Member Posts: 70
It's on the window sticker in the little box for maximum rated loads. It has 3.55

glzr2 - Welcome aboard. Some answers to your questions. Converting from a rear wheel only ABS to a 4 wheel ABS, while possible, would probably be prohibitively expensive. The rear wheel ABS is either a one or two channel system. The four wheel ABS is a four channel system. Converting would require a new controller, wiring, and sensors, and possibly some additional electronics. As far as a rear disc conversion is concerned, there are aftermarket kits available. The prices are in the $600-700 range, plus installation. Finally, the spare tire was changed from an alloy wheel to a steel wheel for the 2002 model. It fell victim to DCs cost cutting efforts (as did the exterior badges and ashtray).

    Enjoy your new truck.
  • glzr2glzr2 Member Posts: 70
The ashtray I can live without, but the steel wheel bugs me... all I have to say is it's a good thing most of you guys have spare tire locks. Just kidding. Now when I blow a tire I have to drive around with a black steel wheel until I get it fixed... oh well, it could be worse... at least it's still full size and at least I don't have to spend the money on a spare tire lock. Would anyone steel a black steel wheel?

    Hey all,
After waiting 2 years for the Thule Rack people to make a foot for the 00 Quad it has finally happenned !!!
Of course you have to screw an adapter plate into a pre-existing hole to make the whole thing work...But none the less it works !!! My canoe is free to fly the roads again .I have used thissame thule rack on 4 different trucks.Just change the fit kit with each truck !
    take care all,

Finally made purchased of 2-panel hard tonneau
cover for my Quad. The Advance cover model.
2 sections, no drilling for mounting of cover.
The six mounting brackets use small "c" clamps.
Rubber strips that cover sets on and weather
strips are applied to bed rails. A little tricky
but worked out fine. We had several inches of rain
yesterday and I didn't see any water in bed.
The cover looks and funtions very well.
    There's room for improvments to cover;
It has 2 key locks, 1 front, 1 rear. I think they
could be of better quality. The lock covers are
just little rubber snap on covers.
Panel lift tabs are plastic, should be metal.
Needs a rear lift tab at rear release opening slid
    bar.
The front and rear rubber weather flap could be
    thicker.
They've added a tailgate lock piece to the Quad
cab application. It's just a plastic piece to
mount on the tailgate that the key lock catches.
Should be made of metal and no mounting instructions were in kit. But it's pretty straight
forward. I have not mounted it yet because I might
go with a tailgate handle cover lock?
Being only 3/4" thick it looks good on my truck.
It's not as thick and bulky as the 2 panel covers
that I've seen on Ford Explorer Sport truck/suv.
Overall I'm pleased with this cover.
At $599.00 delivered to my local Yellow Freight
terminal. I think it will serve my purpose quite
    well.

Went to a local auction last week looking for a small pickup truck and ended up with a '98 standard-cab, short bed Dakota Sport with the 318, er ah I mean 5.2L and the 5 speed with a 3.92 rear. This little truck is a lot of fun!
After working out some bugs ( replaced speed/abs sensor, ais motor, and lower ball joints) I'm already thinking about making some modifications. Can anyone here refer me to a good source for aftermarket parts? Im also looking for some feedback on mods anyone has done like exhaust systems and wheels and such. Thanks for any help

Has anyone installed these on their Quads?

They look really sleek and match the contour lines of the QC but, are expensive ($950 CDN). They can be ordered from the dealer to match vehicle colour.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Bill, I don't know if you have a 2X4 or a 4X4, but most of these molded running boards may act like skis in deep snow. When traveling New England, I have seen Ford Explorers and Expeditions ride right up on the boards causing a no contact position on the tires. I ordered my Expedition without boards, and put nerf bars on which allowed the snow to squeeze between the panel and the bars. Out of deep snow, they are attractive.

(dataguru) I have these on my Dak. Installed by the dealer when new (full warantee on all dealer-installed options at time of purchase)

I live in Vermont and spend many weeks in 4WDLOCK. (read... "plenty of snow") These are not 'true' running boards. Instead they are more like 'nerf bars' that are flat on top.

I REALLY like them for these reasons.
    • STEEL inner core
    • Plastic 'sheathing' that will NEVER rust and is body-colored thruout.
    • Bolted to existing FRAME holes (not body)
    • Rubber 'tread' that matches rear bumper.
    • Stand on them to wash top of truck and cap.
Sure, there are less-expensive nurf bars and running boards available... but most of these are bolted to your truck BODY and are not really meant to be stood on. The body 'flexes' when you put weight on them and the holes you have to drill to install them are a source of rust.

    (Bookitty and Bpeebles)

Thank you both for your feedback and experiences.

Norm, my 2001 QC is a 2WD and not much deep snow to deal with in our area(BC), except in 1996, when 5-6ft of deep snow fell in 48 hours. (worst blizzard in 85yr history) However, I'll be comparing the nerf bars as well before making a decision.

Bruce, yes, good reasons. The attachment to the body frame would surely make them more durable over time. (bonus) Pictures that I've seen of them look to be of good quality construction and matches the Dak contours.

    Thanks again to both.

Hey Guys its been a while since I've posted. Still read now+then. 2001 qc 4x4 4.7 auto, 17000 miles no major probs. I was thinking about puting a soft vinyl type of tonneau cover on the bed. I guess the rails clamp on the tops of the bed?. Anyways I wanted to know what the best one to get was, some have snaps, some velcro, and some have tabs. Also I have bed rails covers, do I need to remove them? If you could please share comments.
    Thanks, and happing Qauding.

I don't think a tonneau cover will mount with
    an over-the-rail bed liner?
I've had the lock-tab type before, but none compare to my "2-Panel" cover I now have on my Quad cab, but the soft cover is much less expensive!

(iowabigguy) GOOD JOB! Those factory "fog lights" are a joke. (poorly focused and low output)

Have you had the chance to run the yellow lamps in the fog? It is amazing how the yellow light cuts right thru the fog. (instead of reflecting back at you.)

HI, looking for some advice. I have an 01 quad cab sport plus 4.7 auto 24000 miles and stock goodyear LS tires are nearing the end of their life. I have the tire/handling pkg so the stock size is 255/65/16. I want to put the 17x9 r/t rims and tires on but wondering what the best choice is for tires... I 'm considering the following sizes: Which set up works the best for a plus 1 set up? I would especally like to hear from others that have done the same thing but any advice would be helpful

    255/55/17 (stock r/t size)
    255/60/17
    275/50/17
    275/55/17

*** ALSO considering the following brands and models in each size.. anyone that has these tires on there truck I would also be interested in hearing your option

    Micheln pilot LTX 255/55/17
    Dunlop sport rover gtx2
    &
    Yokohama geolander ht-s g052 275/55/17

ja812 - The BULLY brand did not work. Problem was that it is anchored in the tail gate with a single bolt at the lock's very center. The BULLY design attempts to block the tail gate's latch linkage only on one side. Since this "blocking" only occurs on the one side of the lock's pivot-point, the whole lock rotates until a "thief" would be successful at opening the gate. A better design would either use more than one anchor bolt to stop the rotation or to block both sides of the tail gate latch linkage so the forces are balanced, thereby stopping the lock's rotation and failure to perform.

I purchased the POP-LOCK brand (through Cabela's with a load of goose-hunting stuff) but have not installed it yet. I'll post the results soon.
  • spike50spike50 Member Posts: 481
slr9589 - Does the Thule rack feet ride on the roof's paint? Although I haven't looked for a while, I think that the Yakima does. I have a kayak and canoe that would stick out a "mile" if carried in the bed. I've been worried about the "muck" dripping out of the canoe after use and getting in between the rack's foot and grinding through the paint on the way home.
  • ja812ja812 Member Posts: 33

Thanks for the info. I'll be lokking foward to hear about the POP-LOCK.
  • spike50spike50 Member Posts: 481
ja812 - Although the Pop-Lock (PL) is anchored with a single bolt like the BULLY, the PL appears to actually work. I yanked on it pretty hard and it stayed locked. The BULLY contraption replaced the tailgate handle and face plate but the PL inserts into the stock handle and doesn't replace anything. So shop for the best price and go for it.

Beware, this lock can easily be defeated by gaining access to the bed and then removing the hex-head anchoring bolt. PL also supplies a one-way straight blade screwdriver driven bolt (like one sees in lavatory partitions). Now that I see that this is a "keeper", I'll go back and install the tamper-resistant bolt. Remember locks only keep basically honest people (kids - we were all there at one time) from making stupid mistakes that cost you money. A determined thief is another story.

The recently installed unit continues to work but their key-hole cover design is troublesome. Unlike other covers, their's is not hinged but must be forced to slide perpendicular to the key to allow entry. If the cover had more of an off-center indent then the force (vectors) of the key would more easily push it aside. I'm going to see if a sharper point on the key works any better because something as sharp as a pocket knife blade has no problem sliding the cover aside.

Does anyone have the Hood cover for the Dakota, it basically covers the grill and hood with a Ram logo on it. Hard to read through all the posts, how does everyone like the soft snapless tonnou covers? Im thinking of getting both from the dodge dealer and have them install it.
  • spike50spike50 Member Posts: 481
I have a TekStyles soft "snap" cover on my '00. I've lived through several winters, summers, and truck bed duty changes. I had to shave a little off of the side rails to get extra slack to allow reconnecting the snaps all the way around in the winter.

My recommendation and what I will do the next time is to get a soft tonneau on a flip-up frame. I have no experience with the snapless variety or other companies, so go with your preferences. This set-up will allow me to haul big items in a moment's notice by unsnapping the cover. One must plan too far ahead if you have a hard cover although a hard cover gives you more truck bed security. It will also allow me to more easily gain access to the "deepest" reaches of the truck bed without having to "dive under the cover" or unsnap / re-snap each time. Finally, during the winter, it will allow me to easily remove an unsnapped cover and its frame from the truck and take it all into a warm area to re-snap, then easily reinstall the whole thing. In the past, I've had to place the wife's electric hair dryer under the cover to heat-up the "bed" air to get the cover to stretch enough to get those last few snaps.

A flip-up soft tonneau should give you the most benefits (instant ability to haul, clean look to the truck, less wind resistance, and better gas mileage), in my opinion.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
I agree with Don regarding the tonneau cover(s) he described. I have the ARE fiberglass cover, and although I really like it and it suits most of my needs, when hauling a large object comes into play, I have to opt for my utility trailer. This is a bit of an inconvenience, but as the cover fits the bill on 85-90% of my needs, it is well worth it to me.

Don, we have just returned to LBI, NJ from FL where we closed on our new home. I flat-towed Judy's Jeep Wrangler there with a furniture seek and destroy mission to Hickory, NC on the way. The Quad performed flawlessly. although the same may not be said for me. While we were there, we closed on the sale of our home of 35 years in Langhorne, PA. Judy retired from teaching at the end of January, and we have been so busy with selling and getting rid of accumulated "junque" along with our 18th century styled furnishings, that we have not had a moment of respite. We were away for over a month and will return to FL after Thanksgiving. And, the one moment that I take to sit on my butt, and you catch me. Is there no justice?

Since my last day of full-time employment after a 29 yr stint, I've focused much effort on business classes at the local community college. I'm planning to eventually get back into energy consulting (physical and financial hedging of natural gas, electricity, fuel oil needs for businesses). Although the early retirement was planned as a welcomed respite, little did I know that it would become "filled" with significant family issues. Both of our son's have self-destructed, in different ways, and now have significant legal problems that need resolved. This was the reason for my one-year hiatus from the Dakota boards. My wife now has a staph infection from a routine operation. I've had to become "Mr. Nurse" and have started a 6 week program to administer her IV antibiotics 3 times a day. What's next?

To get back on to the subject of trucks, the '00 Quad continues to preform well and provides a needed momentary "escape" as does riding my old BMW motorcycle. The Quad continues to get me to all of my remote hunting and fishing locations with my buddies. So far, this has been the best vehicle I've ever owned. I'll keep providing "my two-cents" from time to time.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Don, it has often been proclaimed that if you listen to the problems of others, you will be satisfied to keep your own. Sorry to hear of your problems, and hope for your wife's speedy recovery. I guess that times of turmoil make us appreciate the better times by contrast. I sincerely wish you, "better times."

Anybody have the "flip" style of tonneau cover? How does it work for you? I prefer the hard/fiberglass type but I like the idea of having the flip style and taking it off quickly by myself if I need to.

I have a "Advanced Cover" on my Quad. It's a two
panel hard cover. It so versatile! The mounts clamp
on and it was a easy installation.
The cover comes off easy, loosen two small bolts
and it lifts right off. I can remove it by myself,
but it's easier when my wife helps. I use it often, folded in
half, to carry tall objects just in the back part
of bed. I also have a "bed-extender", this also
    works great with this cover.
Can't think of a better type cover for my truck?
    But to each his own.
    Good luck in deciding.

I now have a few days on these new Edelbrook IAS's (front & back). I've noticed some ride improvement but I haven't been in a situation where the rear normally "bunny-hops" out while in a high speed turn. It appeared that there was some leakage on the rear shocks ('00 Quad 4x4 - 46K miles). My main reason in going with these were to reduce the "jitters" that make it near impossible for the wife (neck problems) to ride in the truck.

Last year I installed an after-market daytime-running-light unit on the truck. This runs the low-beams at 75% of their brightness when the engine starts up. The lights act normally in every other way (blink the high-beams to alert others in the daylight; normal high and low-beam operation when the truck's main light switch is activated). The original unit (7-2002) died a slow death within the one-year warranty and I've just popped a new module into the existing wiring harness. Everything is back to normal. I have not finished the wiring job by connecting the emergency brake wire to the truck. This would cut the lights if you put on your e-brake while sitting with the engine running. Too many other things going on right now to worry about it - later.

I purchased a pair of Nerf Bars for my 03 Quad and in the instructions it states that the bolts need to be tightened to 60 ft lbs of torque. I do not have a torque wrench but if these are tightened as much as I can (I am of average build) would this be enough to equal 60 ft lbs? Or should I rent (if possible) one?

Looks like anyone is better than the flimsy stock

Does anyone know if there is any advantage to buying the Denso Iridium plugs over the other choices (autolite, bosch, champion etc.)?
  • bpeeblesbpeebles Member Posts: 4,085
The Denso Iridium plugs are waaay too expensive for normal street driving. There is no benifet to be realized from using Denso Iridium plugs unless you have a blown engine. (supercharged or turbocharged)

Most folks find for the 4.7L V8 is to use the Bosch Platinum +4. (Bosh INVENTED the sparkplug and they are technically way ahead of any other sparkplug maker) From their nickel plating to the special ceramic compounds... Bosch sparkplugs cannot be matched by most others for the price.

Feel free to research it for yourself...

I have installed the Bosch 4418 Platinum+4s in my 2003 Dakota with the 4.7 motor. They appear to be running fine, but I have only got about 4000 miles on them so far.

At first I thought the idle quality improved, but now I'm not so sure. Fuel consumption did not change. There was a slight hesitation on occasion right after start-up during the cold weather, and the new Bosch's seemed to cure that. But then again, any new plug might have done the same thing.

I haven't put enough mileage on these Bosch's to be able to determine if the cost was worth it. Only time and mileage will tell.

I now have several thousand miles on these new Edelbrock Performer IAS shocks (all four corners). At this point, I can't really say that I noticed a tremendous difference over the OEM's, although the Edelbrocks do appear to of higher quality.

My tried and true method of quieting the truck's jitters and bunny-hops is to put about 100 pounds sand (three separate polyester bags - no worry of rotting away) across the bed at the tailgate. This appears to work the best (4WD, 31x10.5-15 Goodyear RTS @ 40 psi).

I need to seriously think about new tires for the winter. I'm now experiencing hydroplaning at 45-50 mph (almost 49K on tires). I wouldn't be able to go, stop, or turn with these in a normal Pennsylvania winter. Maybe newer tires will contribute to a quieter ride. Looking at Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's @ about $650 - $700 for all five but I still have two months before I need to change.
