I am no longer shocked by car prices. Today I was talking to a coworker who has a 2005 Ford Ranger with only 51k miles which he was thinking of selling. Yes, I’m interested as milage like that on a 16 yo truck is nice. Then he mentions that it’s worth $7500. Yikes!

I went online to check prices across the country and $7500 was on the low end. Will someone pinch me and wake me up from this nightmare?

$7500 is indeed on the low end. If it was the xcab, with 4.0L engine, and looked nice, I might just buy it for a junk hauler. Heck, even before the present weirdness began, that truck would have fetched $5k easy. If it had good shiny paint and a clean interior, more.

I was out and about today, driving the Pacifica for the first time in 3 days. I had to take one of my dogs over to the vet. They make you wait outside, first you wait until they're ready for your pet, then you bring in the pet and go back outside and wait some more. All told I spent better than 2 hours in the minivan, most of that time with the engine running and the A/C on. No bad smells. Knock on wood, I may have conquered the "stale cigarettes" smell.

Then this evening, drove over a few miles to get some Mexican food, none in my neighborhood. And discovered something new on the minivan. This sucker is equipped with the ding fodded "start / stop" technology. Now I'll have to go over and prowl the Pacifica forums to find out if I can disable that.

On Edit: Just like on the F150, there is a button for that on the dash. But just like the F150, you have to press the button every time you start the car.

Our vet has curbside service; call when you arrive and they come out and collect your pet, then bring them back when done.

I see some gizmo advertised on TV that’s supposed to enable you to disable the stop-start permanently. You plug it into the port under the dash. Don’t know if I would trust one of those “as seen on tv” products unless it was late at night and I had been drinking. Probably brought to you by the same fine folks that sell a similar product that turns off your odometer.

I called Subaru when I bought the Legacy 3.6 and asked if there were any incentives they could offer. They sent a voucher for $1,000. Later when I bought the Ascent I did the same thing. They sent one for $750.

All they can do is laugh at you. You never know.

I haven't been driving the Explorer much. Took the MKZ to Ohio about a week and half ago.
Not sure if I'll get 400 miles out of this tank. Last time I filled up was early April.
Just haven't been driving much. Everything seems ok with it, though.

A good salesperson will even ask you some questions to see if you qualify for some of the less publicized discounts. I was working for one of the large telecom companies and lo and behold my sales guy found me an additional $500.

I received an email back requesting my zip code & the VIN on my Pilot. I provide it to him.

Next I get an email asking me if I owe money on the Pilot (not sure what this has to do with anything). I reply yes along with the loan balance, who it is financed through, and that I got an offer from ALGO to buy it for $25K.

I'll let you know how the story unfolds.

Often wondered about those dealers who ask whether I owed money on my trade. I asked my BMW sales guy one time about that. He’s been in the biz for 35 years. He was honest and said (paraphrasing)…”if we know the payoff is higher than the trade value, we know we either have to roll that negative equity into the loan/lease, or we’ll have to ask what they want their payment to be to see if we have a realistic shot of making a deal”.

Makes sense. But, I am often oft put by a dealer asking me my payoff, or what payment I want when I’m looking at their vehicles. To me, it’s more important to find what I want, not what they think my payment is going to be (if any).

IF I can’t find what I want first, then the rest of those questions don’t mean anything.

My sister bought her son a late 90's 4Runner a year or so back. I think it had 160,000 miles on it and they paid $6000.

Now that he's graduated from the fire academy, he's looking for a job with the federal government. Depending on where he gets based, he may be in the market for a newer vehicle.

An uninformed customer doesn’t do anyone any favors. I would probably be shocked at the % of people that walk in not knowing how much they owe on their trade. Now prior to this crazy blip in the market just about everyone thinks their trade is worth more than what is offered but again, I bet there is a high % with such an inflated expectation, a deal is not possible.

Especially in these crazy times.

When we bought our Outback 6 years (!) ago, I did detailed research on both the purchase price as well as the value of my trade. I took it to both CarMax as well as EchoPark (Sonic Automotive equivalent) the day before I made the deal to get their buy bids.

The Subaru dealer offered $2000 less than either of the bids, so I pulled out the sheet from CarMax and showed them what they would pay for it. Dealer was able to match that price.

I'd say a dozen times a day, I'm giving a member advice in a lease thread on how to get a good value for their trade (Vroom, CarMax or Carvana to start), then give their dealer a chance to match it.

This inflated market will end, someday, and used car prices will come back to something resembling normality (ie, most folks will be underwater with their loan or lease).

In many cases, right now in the midst of the madness, their trade IS worth a lot more than what is offered on trade in.

Three weeks ago, when I traded up from the 2016 T&C to the 2019 Pacifica, I had an offer on the table from Carvana for $16,696. I asked Hertz (where I bought the Pacifica) to evaluate my T&C, and they came back at $12,500. In this new modern online world, I will never again consider trading in or selling a car without getting several online bids first. Easy, painless, only takes a few minutes, and could save you several thousand dollars.

As for knowing the payoff, I don't think most people keep track of that. Back when I had car payments, I didn't. Then again, I never traded it in until I had paid it off.

This is true. There's something that almost amounts to an urban myth surrounding older 4 Runners. People talk about how they never die, never break down, never need repairs. The stories go back and forth, becoming some kind of legend and eventually urban myth.

In 1968, my last year in high school, one of my best friends got hold of a 1954 Oldsmobile with 18k miles. 324 V8, 4 speed hydramatic. It had the original tires, and when he started driving it out on the highway at speed, chunks of rubber flew off the tires. Tommy drove that car for 3 years, and then sold it to my younger brother, who drove it for another 2 years. It might still be running, if he hadn't loaned it to someone who wrecked it.

13 year old Cadillac with 33k miles, one elderly owner. A few years back, I purchased a similar car, a 2006 DTS with thirty-something thousand miles. One owner, perfect condition, beautiful red (not the god-awful black over black in this ad).

The reason I finally sold that Cadillac? The tires leaked. I bought a new set of Michelins, had bead sealant applied twice, still had to air up the tires every second or third day. Finally searched around on Cadillac specific forums and discovered that was a known problem with the factory chrome wheels. A set of good looking wheels, that would go well with that car, was going to run me over a thousand dollars, all in, and I just didn't want to sink that much more into the car.

So I put the Outback into Carmax and they're offering $33,200. That's nearly $1000 more than we paid for it 2 years ago and $6500 in equity. If we took it, it would mean driving it for free for the last 2 years.

Wife says she is willing to part with the outback but it has to be for a Hybrid or PHEV of some kind. I don't think I'm going to find anything that really fits the bill for her.

Actually not. The bench seat, no console, is hard to find. Highly desirable in my case because the great majority of these have a console which impinges rather badly on your thigh area. And when you do find one with no console, it invariably has no moonroof as well, not sure why.

Make sure to run it through Vroom and Carvana. Carvana topped out Vroom and Carmax by more than a thousand dollars in my case.

Highlander? She nixed the Pacifica a few weeks ago. Subaru has a hybrid Crosstrek now but thats not near big enough for you. CRV is actually pretty nice. I tested a Touring a few years ago and the interior particularly was very nice.

Heck thats a bonus in my book! I was just shopping 4 series convertibles with a Weber for a front grill for my wife. Just under 60k.

No, I believe it. Such occurrences (10 years old, 6k miles) are rare, but definitely do happen. In 1968, my last year in high school, one of my best friends got hold of a 1954 Oldsmobile with 18k miles. 324 V8, 4 speed hydramatic. It had the original tires, and when he started driving it out on the highway at speed, chunks of rubber flew off the tires. Tommy drove that car for 3 years, and then sold it to my younger brother, who drove it for another 2 years. It might still be running, if he hadn't loaned it to someone who wrecked it.

13 year old Cadillac with 33k miles, one elderly owner. A few years back, I purchased a similar car, a 2006 DTS with thirty-something thousand miles. One owner, perfect condition, beautiful red (not the god-awful black over black in this ad).

The reason I finally sold that Cadillac? The tires leaked. I bought a new set of Michelins, had bead sealant applied twice, still had to air up the tires every second or third day. Finally searched around on Cadillac specific forums and discovered that was a known problem with the factory chrome wheels. A set of good looking wheels, that would go well with that car, was going to run me over a thousand dollars, all in, and I just didn't want to sink that much more into the car.

Actually not. The bench seat, no console, is hard to find. Highly desirable in my case because the great majority of these have a console which impinges rather badly on your thigh area. And when you do find one with no console, it invariably has no moonroof as well, not sure why.

Undoubtedly. You have to remember those cars (Cadillac DTS, 2006 to 2011) were designed for, built for, marketed to, and sold to “seniors”. It was a strategy that worked. Then new management came in and didn’t want to be associated with “old folk’s cars”, so they changed the emphasis to try and compete with BMW. Which didn’t work, and sales tanked.

Well, that platform (which also carried the Buick Lucerne) went out of production and was fairly ancient. Cadillac replaced it with the XTS (based off the Lacrosse/Impala platform) which was a really nice car tailored to the traditional Caddy buyer. That did OK for them and is one I would snap up if a low-miles one-owner version popped up nearby. When I see a nice one on the road around here it always turns my head.
