I think Acura's refusal to offer a RWD passenger car has more to do with it.

For the same $$ as the CL-S, I'd snag a G35 sedan w/ a 6-speed.
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hmm, I prefer our grab-and-pull door handles. I've read that firemen also prefer it, it's safer when they need access. That's why Mercedes uses them.

The CL didn't make a whole lotta sense. It wasn't truly sporting, being too big and a bit soft. I know a couple of people that own one and sort of regretted the purchase. One wished the RSX had been out back then.

Plus, people who want big and soft end up getting a TL instead.

Acura certainly has become the "Japanese Buick".

...but I digress.

No, the Avalon's mission is to be the Japanese Oldsmobile.

There is a "legacy special edition" running around Philly/PA with manufacturer plates and an H6 badge. Not sure of the body style but it could be an H6 for '04MY?

This time without any typography or garbage covering it. I like the the tapering window line.

based on gut feeling!

• All-new US-spec '05 Legacy to debut at next Detroit Show in January.

• All-new US-spec '05 Outback to debut at next Chicago Show in February.

• All-new US-spec '05 Baja* to debut at next New York Show in April.

* = I find it highly unlikely that the current Baja will be produced alongside the all-new Legacy/Outback at the USA plant. It makes far more sense, IMO, to convert all platforms being built there to the same platform, at the same time.

Looks like a toned down and beefed up Matrix.

Head room should be excellent. I like the thin B- and C-pillars. Rims look to be 17".

H6 Legacy? No, no. Keep the H6 for the Outback, make it standard even, and make Legacys all turbos.

• subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
they're going to do H6 turbos in the Legacy's...

I'm not certain at this point if I like the new look. I'd need better/larger pictures or to see it up close.

I've always had a desire for a B4-RSK, but I fairly certain it would be above my desired spending preferences. The XT would be a fine 'settle' point. ;-)

• sweet_subiesweet_subie Member Posts: 1,394
i doubt if they'll do H6 Turbos........the price tag would go as high as over 35k......not sure if you can break into lux market with Subaru name........

maybe this is the way to break into lux market....who in that market has H6 Turbo AWD for 36k.......imagine what this will do to all those overpriced Acura TL, Infiniti G35, boat-like Lexus ES ?

it will compete head-to-head with audis A6 & avant wagon.....hopefully with 5 to 10k less. the more i think i think this should be subaru's next step !

Looks like an Audi from the rear of sedan and wagon! 18" wheels! Sedan looks like it might be a hatch(?), judging by the very faint cut lines.

I can't wait to see the US-spec version, as well as all the various other iterations (Outback & Baja).

better looking views of it this time around. 18"s too, my oh my.

Wow!! Wow!! and Wow!!
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I LOVE it!

The front in particular, looks even better than the sketches. The hood scoop is subtle. The headlights look more distinctive than I expected, nice. That grille should provide plenty of cooling and the badge looks "framed", a nice touch.

THREE spoke wheel, finally! Thank you!

I see a Navi, I also see Sportshift! Macintosh radio. Drilled pedals. This on a plain cloth model!

On a scale of 1 to 10, the wagon gets an "11". (spinal tap joke) :-)

Note the backup lamps and the dual exhaust on the wagon. Schweet.

With that photo, I now see less Focus and Matrix, and more Audi. Thumbs up. The taillights are very "Avant".

The sedan I give a "9" because the taillights look too much like the Camry. The profile is nice though.

Oh man, now the XT might not cut it. With the wife putting on pressure for me to get a bigger car, that wagon is just beautiful.

• subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
My 'gut' guess is that it won't be priced where it is now, it'll be bumped up a couple $K's. A 'hot' version could easily be $33k or more.

Very nice looking though, especially the front. Hopefully most of that look and content (hopefully ALL of it) will make it to the States.

If they would have been more 'giving' and opted to give the current Legacy the 2.5T (or at least the 2.0T), I'd easily trade my Outback in for one. But, come this fall or so, I'm fairly certain we'll be in an XT. Gotta have that moooooonrooooooof. ;-)

jeeeeeeeez, the used car subaru prices are going to collapse !

curious to see how Outback will look ?

breadth has not increased, has it ?

Or put another way, quite a compliment to VW/Audi that ~6 years later, Nissan and Subaru follow the lines without finding much the can add to the original...

WOW! x 3. That wagon is simply beautiful. Major thumbs up Subaru!

It's very faint, but the rear pic of the sedan looks as though it could be a hatchback. I see a subtle line running along-side the rear window.

-tom
• subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
looks to be a rear wiper sitting there on the rear deck of the sedan.

major reason for WRX to be a great success is that press was amazing about WRX eesp. on price.

the opposite is true for LL bean & VDC, though cars were great, becos they were pricey - press was against it.

they should not make this mistake on this....i want the price to be sub 30...
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I thought the same thing looking at the sedan. The trunk/hatch(?) cut line is very, VERY faint. You really have to look for it, but it does suggest a hatch to me. Also, the rear deck is VERY short, so if it is a sedan, the trunk opening would be very small. Finally, the B11S concept is a hatchback; I wonder if Subaru was tipping its hand with that one? I really do think it's a 5-door hatchback.

As to the rear wiper, many Japanese home-market sedans have rear wipers.

Sedan tailights, A-4 or Camry? I say both—and the Camry reference doesn't bother me one bit. I think the new Camry's tailights are quite handsome.

Legacy teaser site. Seems to me the cat's already out of the bag, or at least much of it is...

The only real thing lacking are the "specifics," which from what I can tell, may be significant news. :)

OK I'm slow with catching up on Future Models.

Gorgeous looking :)

Noticed the sportshift goes P->R->N->[D] +/-
Gone are 1->2->3->?... so, 4EAT or 5EAT?

I also see independent R/L headlight leveler switches.

Wonder what those +/- switches on steering wheels are for?

-Dave
• kenokakenoka Member Posts: 218
It is supposed to have a 5EAT with sportshift and VTD. The buttons on the steering wheel presumably control the sportshift feature.
• lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
The new Legacies are indeed good-looking cars. A little derivative, to be sure, but still identifiable as a Subaru. My main concern would be the wagon's rear outward visibility; not only does the c-to-D-pillar glass taper a la Matrix/Vibe, but the rear glass looks to have lost the little dip in the middle that is such a nice feature of the current car.

allhorizon re post #9975: "quite a compliment to VW/Audi that ~6 years later, Nissan and Subaru follow the lines without finding much they can add to the original..." I would hope Subaru can add (or continue) better levels of build quality and customer service while NOT adding the increased maintenance costs and poor customer service that have sworn me off VW/Audi.

Food for thought: If the new Legacy sedan is indeed a hatch, will it also provide a basis for the next Saab 9-3?

Anyway it is far too soon for me to be swayed from the Forester XT v. WRX wagon debate for my next Subie. Only a significant amount of seat time in all three can make that happen.

even if the JDM version has a hatch , it may not make it to the US, at least previous Toyota, Mazdas with sedan like hatchs tended not to make it over here. there is an aversion by US buyers to hatchs and wagons.

whats with the reverse light in the wagon tailgate????????

>> I would hope Subaru can add (or continue) better levels of build quality and customer service while NOT adding the increased maintenance costs and poor customer service that have sworn me off VW/Audi. <<

Ed, you have a point there. Of course, I was referring to the design/artistic lines.

Although VW/Audi still have ways to go in terms of build quality, I do believe they have made progress over the years, and some of their models are at least "average" in that respect. Definitely less than you would expect from a leader, but not so bad that all their cars could be considered lemons.

Also, due to their poor market research and planning, they don't currently offer what I want to purchase, which is best exemplified by the 2.5XT.

Of course they could easily offer a slightly raised Jetta Wagon with AWD and choice of turbo or Diesel, but they don't. By the time they do, people will want something else, again.

rear end looks really cheesy. The lights look like they are from a mazda protege or a volvo :(

I hope the sedan has a bigger trunk deck than that pic indicates.

just added to that NASIOC thread (page 2). It really looks good.

D: I agree, Audi style was way ahead of its time. The 1997 Audi A4 in particular really set off a trend.

If the 2.5GT replacement (maybe a 2.5T GT?) is within a grand or two of the current one, that might be my next car. If price runs away, we'll have to see. I hope the L/SE replacement gets 180hp or so.

If the sedan is a hatchback, that might be my wife's next car. She prefers the look of a sedan, and that might be practical enough for me to give it the OK as well.

Bob - the photo with the cover actually accentuates the grille, which I had pointed out as being highlighted in the design. The hood scoop is hardly noticeable in comparison. You also see the roof rails seem integrated, a la Forester. I bet those will be aluminum also.

That wagon profile makes it look nothing at all like the Matrix. I guess the sketch was off in that regard.

I like those 5 spoke rims! Sporty and easy to clean. They really seemed to sweat the details!

Here's my bold prediction - the new Legacy won't have NEARLY the same level of controversy as the WRX did at its launch. In fact it might be the least controversial intro since the last Legacy.

There seems to be almost universal thumbs up.

That's how long it would take me to trade in my WRX wagon for the Legacy 2.5T Wagon
:-)
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
The styling won't be controversial. The big issue, as I see it, will be "content," especially horsepower content—across the whole Legacy/Outback/Baja range, and not just the top models.

Bob
• kenokakenoka Member Posts: 218
To me they look exactly the same as the current Legacy sedan lights minus the plastic strip in the middle.
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I'm glad that's gone.

Bob
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I like it - because all the water that runs off the rear window gets that dirty instead of sheetmetal and chromed letters, which are fading on my Forester. The plastic is easy to clean and more durable.

Presumably it's more visible from behind, too.

Looks? Makes little difference to me.
