    Just got quoted a lease payment of $842 a month for 36 month 12k miles on a $62,000 Limited 4x4 Crew cab. Sales manager told me money factor .00229 with 71% residual. This payment seems way off. At about $21k finance over 36 months. Payment should be around $634 a month. What am I missing?

    If $62K is the MSRP and also the adjusted CAP, I get $742/mo+tax.
    That's assuming all fees, etc are paid upfront.

    So, not hard to see $842/mo, without knowing the MSRP and sale price, or the amount Due at Signing.

    Also, you aren't financing $21K, you are financing $62K.

    Perhaps I am confused. I thought a lease was simply financing the depreciation over the term. I was taking the $21k depreciations and calculating 5.49% interest over 36 months. I also seems odd that a $42k truck has a lease payment of $359 a month. Even if the truck was double the cost, wouldnt the payment be around $700 a month? $359 a month is $8.54 dollars per $1k financed. 62 times 8.54 equals $530 a month. I would expect the lease payment to be close to this. Is this math off? At $842 a month, I could finance for 84 months and get about the same payment. I thought Lease payments were supposed to be a lot less per month. Especially for a car that has high residuals.

    The bank that rents you the vehicle has to pay the full price for it. Your finance charges on a lease are applied to the average of the adjusted CAP cost and the residual.

    84 month finance payment is a good comparison for a 36 month lease payment.

    I followed the steps and came up with $782 a month for the lease. I was missing the monthly interest which is based on the total of almost $110K. Says to add Cap cost and residual. That seem outrageous. The monthly interest to lease this truck would be $256 a month. This tells me that Toyota does not want people to lease the higher end models. Does that make sense?

    $110K is the amount used with the MF. But, the actual amount is half that (because it's an average). You are converting the MF to an APR, without converting that part of the calculation, as well.

    Yes, the monthly finances charges are high, but the monthly depreciation is tiny (relatively). In the end, they are renting you a vehicle for a monthly payment. Is that payment high, right now? Certainly. There is a vehicle shortage, and supply/demand dictates the deals you get.
