I have done that before. And had a few multi purchase years. Still amateur hour compared to the big guns here.

depending on what happens with some ancillary family members it is possible there could be another car or 2 filter through also.

Nope, not even close. Depreciation was roughly $4k - so not bad for a Volvo, but certainly not a money maker.

Congrats on the WRX…that’s a REALLY fun punch. And it’s one of those times that there’s no heartache over not getting the new version.

Oh, I am SO EXCITED I'll be driving a rally car. Definitely feel happier about this one than anything since the Charger. This could be a long-term commitment.

Q, nothing wrong with having 1 keeper when the rest of the fleet is a revolving door. Or 2 soon, since I assume the Sprinter will be a long term keeper too. Plus they have warranties and won't have needs, so nothing to take up your time!

and with all these crazy tax credits, I probably should have tried to find a plug in too. P-style of course.

Forgot to go into a little more detail on this exchange thus far. I have dealt with no fewer than FIVE people at this dealership to this point.

My first contact was with a woman with whom I texted and emailed. Maybe she was pulled off when, on Sat, I got one of those “Hey, this is the GM. Let me know if you have been taken care of.” and I replied explaining I sent my quote and have not heard back for 48 hrs.

I texted her again this morn and she finally wrote back about how they’ve been trying to figure out how to work with NJ etc. I then got a call from a sales manager. We went over the numbers and all was good, although they thought NJ charges tax on full sales price. Then got a call from the finance manager (FM). He tells me “I’ll be your only contact from now on.” Ok, cool. Later on, a low-level dude (LLD) calls me to collect some info and confirm numbers yet again. FM emails for some more info, DL, etc. Then comes that phone call in the car I previously mentioned. This is back to LLD. At first, he goes on about the numbers and comes to the conclusion that, with my $2500 DAS, I’d be at 440. Ummm… no. Mind you, I’m the one driving.

So I run down the numbers for him. “You have 6.625% tax on the cap cost? You have .00085 MF? You have 57% RV?” …. “Oh, no, sir. That’s the problem.” He was taken aback that I knew all the above. But he had me at 15k. “Ok, sir, now I match your numbers. Thank you.” So I say he intrigued me a bit with the finance talk. He says 2500 down is about 440 (hence why he originally thought the finance and lease were same numbers). I said “well, I’d feel better at 225, so I’ll put a little more down. Should be …. About $4000.” He does some clicking. “Geesh. You are good with math. 422.xx.” Ok, let’s do that. Done.

My wife could only shake her head at me out-mathing the poor kid, who is sitting at a computer, while I’m driving. I let him know I have done this A LOT.

I have done that same deal a bunch of times on the phone, or sitting at the salesguys desk. It is amazing how hard it is for some people to do math in their head or believe somebody else can (though plenty can't seem to do it with a calculator or computer either).

That’s the same time as a 2010 Ford Fusion 3.0L. Not bad for a family sedan, not good for a supposed sporty car.

That was just a shot in the dark but a friend had really bad knee pain which turned out to be Lyme. He hadn’t had the normal symptoms.

Just as an FYI, as I did not know this. A neighbor has a Honda Accord on a 3 year lease. Over the holidays he told me he was going to try to flip it like I was flipping some of my recent purchases.

Well, spoke with him yesterday. Asked him how the flip was going. He said HONDA will not let him flip his Accord. Not sure how that’s possible. But apparently, he took it to CarMax and talked to CARVANA. Both told him Honda has been disallowing resales/trade of their leased vehicles.

I told him that doesn’t sound right. But, asking the gurus here, have you heard of this?

I noticed on my latest lease statement for the Polestar that the payoff amount had gone up by a few thousand. When I inquired about it, they said they are now required to add the sales tax to the payoff amount.

My thoughts…every lease contract has a buyout clause so they can’t prevent you from buying it out, but that requires the payment of sales tax. I think they can deny someone other than the lessor (like a dealer) from buying the lease out.

Flipping makes a lot less sense if you have to go through the buyout process prior to selling or trading it.

I’m not surprised Honda followed the others and won’t allow a third party buyout.

Volvo is incredibly restrictive on their leases. No transfers, no third party buyouts. Only way out is to buy it and pay taxes or trade to a Volvo dealer.

Yep, many of the captive banks are disallowing their lessees from selling the car to a 3rd party, like Carvana or CarMax.

Given that you don't really own the car, the banks don't feel like you should profit off of it, in this crazy market.

Yes, a lot of companies stopped allowing 3rd party buyouts at your buyout amount. I believe the contract was written to allow that. Basically you can do it, and pay tax, but to trade it 3rd party, they can do it at current market price, set by them.

This was always the case, but usually, never an issue since buyout was more than the trade offer.

My Acura lease statement always showed a buyout figure each month, and it did include my sales tax. When I sold to Carvana, AFS deducted that out (this was before they cracked down) so I got more than I expected.

Your neighbor can still sell it. He just has to buy it first, which means paying tax, which will reduce his profit. Unless he trades it in and gets a credit, but he gets shorted by the tax doing that.

One more thing. I believe this doesn’t apply if you take it to one of their dealers. So he could in theory sell it to a Honda dealer at his buyout, and pay no tax, some come out ahead if they match the car max offer

I was just cruising Craislist up here in sub-zero degree Vermont. Weird time to list a car like this! Maybe because it's a "Louts" instead of a "Lotus"?

I wouldn't assume scam. Darned thing was only $80k new.
no auction data to rely on, unfortunately. Only 1 passed through, nearly a year ago, and hit $28k. Could have been a wreck for all I know. A couple of non-S models went through in June: $56k for 5k miles and $51k for 30k miles.

Not me, I’m holding out for my coworker to come back from Florida with his old Ford Ranger. I won’t participate in the dealer market until prices normalize just on principle.

I can understand not wanting to be without AWD/4WD in your area. Tough situation given current lead times on things.

Friend or family have anything to borrow/rent? Again it’s such a long time, its quite an ask.

Roll the dice and buy a $3k beater? Highly risky in this crazy market. Whatever you get is liable to be barely roadworthy and you certainly don’t want to be driving your kiddo around in that.

Hold off on the order until the worst of winter has passed and use the ZHP?
