On a related note: can one of you home renovation specialists tell me how much does it cost per sq. ft. for carpet these days. Wife wants the living room done carpet, pad and installation. What am I looking at?
Also can you give me the name of a good quality high end bourbon under $100 a bottle? Planning ahead for gifts.
Carpet is so expensive, they now quote it by the square foot, instead of square yard.
lol.............I think that is why Canada switched gasoline from gallons to liters. $!.80 a liter sounds cheaper than $6 a gallon.
I remember back in the 70's when we had the toothless "hey lets all go metric" here in the U.S. the gas station by my dads house quickly converted to metric. When we converted the price to price per gallon, we found he raised the price by over 10%.

I stand corrected - I wrote from memory, somebody mentioned it to me and I did not check it. My bad - Florida is definitely a net taker, not donor and a large one in total numbers, middle of the pack if divide it per resident or per dollars paid (Florida is also fourth largest payer for obvious reasons). BTW somehow Virginia is by far the largest taker these days in all metrics. Interestingly, when it comes to actual reliance of the state's budget on federal money, Florida is in the lower half both in terms of total dollars and percentage of the budget (16.6%). New York takes fewer dollars than Florida, but relies more on feds for its expenses (18.7%) and New Jersey takes both less and lower percentage (15.4%). Most addicted to federal money are all the rural states, like Montana (29%), Louisiana (29%), Kentucky, Alaska, etc., which makes sense.
I was saddened to learn of Vin Scully’s passing yesterday. I was brought up in a family that idolized the “Brooklyn” Dodgers and frequented Ebbets Field as a kid.
I got to know Vin Scully when I was in Palm Desert. Don Drysdale, whom I often had breakfast with on Wednesday mornings when he was not broadcasting Dodger games, had 3 kids in the school I ran and upon Don’s passing I attended his memorial service at Forest Lawn Cemetery just north of Dodger Stadium which is in Chavez Ravine. Vin Scully was the MC for the memorial service. After the service, Tommy Lasorda and Vin Scully approached me and asked if they could visit the school and visit with the Drysdale kids when in the desert. Of course I agreed.
When either of them were in the desert, they always stopped by the school and often led assemblies for the Pre-K through 8th grade student body. They told stories to the student body and staff about Don Drysdale and other Dodger stars. I remember that both of them were quite religious in the manner in which they lived their lives. We frequently went out for lunch when they visited.
The stories the two of them shared with me about baseball will always bring fond memories of them.

30 cents per gallon discount when buying gas with Driven by E-ZPass through Labor Day

Dear EZDriveMA Customer,
As you may know, the 19-state E-ZPass Group granted approval to Massachusetts company PayByCar™ to conduct a retail pilot program called Driven by E-ZPass that allows drivers to buy gas by way of E-ZPass transponder recognition. Until Labor Day, EZDriveMA customers using the Driven By E-ZPass program will get 30 cents off per gallon (up to five fill-ups) at 27 participating Alltown Mobil gas stations.
This is an “opt-in” program.
E-ZPass tag-holders may voluntarily enroll with PayByCar for non-touch payments at gas stations and other drive-thru services such as fast food and parking lots.
How does PayByCar work?
When you drive into a participating gas station, PayByCar recognizes your E-ZPass transponder and smartphone. You get a text, you reply with the pump number, PayByCar turns on the pump, you fuel up and drive away with an email receipt. PayByCar does not draw funds from E-ZPass holders' tolling accounts.

Was happy when we paid off the mortgage back in 1995, looking back, was the smartest move we made in a long time. But before that, we'd pay our own property taxes as we wanted to have control over when it was done. I'd take out a 10 month CD with my gratuity monies and pay the bill on November 17th every year. Worked out well as the kids were getting older and that excess we were paying into the mortgage helped pay whatever their scholarships and savings we had for them didn't. And our mortgage was the only thing we financed after we married...if we didn't have the cash for things, we just didn't buy them. Kind of a live below your means mindset which we passed along to the kids and which they all seem to still live by. But, I don't ask the two who have a mortgage what they pay as it ain't none of my business. If they want to tell us, we'll listen but we never pry...and it seems to be working.

Here in Ontario the government bought our votes by giving us back our license fees...it's about $250. So the scammers are out there telling people that if they want their license sticker rebate send in all of your bank information etc. so that they can deposit the money into your account....but, of course, these emails are not from the government.

Nice of you to miss me (I think).
Have been working for my former employer on a contract basis. They sent me to San Juan, PR. Helped set up a sales out call center for them. While I was there, I visited a couple of friends I hadn’t seen in quite a while. They talked me into doing some IT volunteer work there in return for a place to stay, some home made PR food and an occasional beer. Ended up staying 3 weeks.
Wonderful place, great people. They’re just getting back to normal from the devastating Hurricane Maria. Hard working, resourceful, proud people. Thoroughly enjoyed helping them.

It sounds like you had a good time. That’s good to hear.
I worked as a consultant to my old employer too long (on and off mostly on for almost 20 years)
Finally into my early 70’s, I took pity on them and decided to finally hang it up for good before they’d have to give me another retirement which might have bankrupted them.
Stick around for awhile. If I can do it you can too.

Guy: Doctor, my Girlfriend is pregnant, but we always use protection, and the rubber never broke. How is it possible?
Doctor: Let me tell you a story: “There was once a Hunter who always carried a gun wherever he went. One day he took out his Umbrella instead of his Gun and went out.
A Lion suddenly jumped in front of him. To scare the Lion, the Hunter used the Umbrella like a Gun, and shot the Lion, then it died!
Guy: Nonsense! Someone else must have shot the Lion.
Doctor: Good! You understood the story. Next patient please

Has anyone talked about new cars not having am radios installed any more? It seems drivers in the U.S. want am radios....popular in the U.S. because they are useful for news and traffic/weather reports. Also good because the waves reach remote areas easily, less having to change channels and find a station that comes in clearly. In Europe though, people are abandoning listening to am radio. Distances are less and of course am sound is not as good as other forms. It looks like European makes are dumping am radios on new cars, while domestic makers will hang on for now. https://www.thedrive.com/news/heres-why-some-automakers-tune-out-am-radios-in-new-cars

IIRC the P300 with the 4 banger had a sub 6 second 0-60 time which is pretty decent and while slower that the R type it's plenty powerful for daily driving. Plus I think the F Type is now strictly V8's and also about 25% more expensive.

Back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s I became a baseball fan and most nights in the summer I would tune in games, first on a multi-band portable, later on a Realistic AM/shortwave radio with a long wire antenna strung outside that I got for Christmas. That thing could pull in stations from the eastern half of North America. The most dependable ones were WTIC 1080 in Hartford for the Red Sox, WHN 1050 in NYC for variously the Yankees and the Mets, WCAU 1210 for the Phillies, WBAL 1090 for the Orioles, WJR 760 for the Tigers, and occasionally KMOX 1120 for the Cardinals. It all depended on the evening’s atmospheric conditions but the east coast stations were pretty consistent. My favorite thing was when the east coast teams would be on a west coast swing, so you could hear games from California after midnight. Great memories with great voices like Lindsay Nelson, Bob Murphy, Phil Rizzuto, Chuck Thompson, Ned Martin, Ernie Harwell and Harry Kalas.
I had a small roof leak over the screened porch and called a roofing company to repair it. He came down after the repair and said that I had a lot of roofing issues. Keep in mind that the roof was replaced six years ago. Roofer gave a quote of over $15,000 but suggested a reroof because he said the repairs would be visible.
I called the insurance company and an adjuster came out. His only comment was “your roof is in great shape”.
Hmmm. I know who not to call back if I ever have a roofing issue. I never imagined someone would be so dishonest.

Back in the 60's and 70's the only radio that I personally had was a crystal radio that I built myself and being a crystal radio could only pick up one station. But at least I didn't have to worry about batteries.

Filled up with PUG at my local Costco yesterday - $4.16 per gallon. That’s a drop of over $1.00 per gallon from late June.
It is my understanding that the reason for the drop is due to a significant reduction in demand. Demand has dropped over 1 million barrels per day here in the US - was 9.8 million and now 8.7 million.
Problem is that as demand increases due to lower prices, cost per gallon will go back up.

speaking of Phils, we were at the Fri night game where they celebrated the stadium announcer's, Dan Baker, 50th work anniversary. I got first touch on Realmuto's homer but couldn't secure it. Every year, a local community (Lebanon, OH) has a blues festival tied to a car show. After the rain cleared, my son and I headed there. Parked in a public parking lot. After 4-5 hours of looking at vintage muscle cars and listening to some live blues, we were sweaty and spent.
Come to the parking lot, and there’s a kid riding around the parking lot in his bicycle (12 y.o., maybe). I was walking to the car and the kid saw me very towards my Accord. He said…”if that’s your car, some guy backed into you about 5 minutes ago”. Well, at first, I didn’t see anything. Then, upon further inspection, I saw this.
I asked if he got the license number (NO!). That means I’m coming out of pocket. Hoping the parking sensors are OK. Thinking they just remove the bumper, skim it, and repaint it. $700-$1,000? What say you?
@graphicguy, sorry for you car’s damage. That’s maddening. I’ve had similar damage in bumpers successfully repaired with a mobile repair and great results. You may want to get a bid from them. I think your estimate range is correct. Keep us informed and good luck.
A good PDR guy who does paint may be able to take care of it, barring any alignment or internal issues.
That stinks. Small world, yesterday my mom helped a friend have a yard sale, so she parked down the street. Nutty woman tried some weird parking maneuver and smacked my mom's car - being a Camry, of course at the rear bumper corner, leaving a big indentation. Of course, no license, no insurance, etc. Her car is heading for 20 years old now, so she isn't looking to spend her deductible and risk a rate hike to repair it, I told her try the hot water and push from the inside trick and see what happens.

I asked if he got the license number (NO!). That means I’m coming out of pocket. Hoping the parking sensors are OK. Thinking they just remove the bumper, skim it, and repaint it. $700-$1,000? What say you?
That is beyond infuriating. So sorry.

When @andres3 sees this he’s going to ask, “why would you believe an insurance company adjuster”? Having said that, I’d talk to another roofing guy and I’d get that guys contact info from someone you know who is satisfied with his work.

I called my friend who is a brick mason and got a local roofer’s number. That roofer came over and agreed with the insurance adjuster…

Every year, a local community (Lebanon, OH) has a blues festival tied to a car show. After the rain cleared, my son and I headed there. Parked in a public parking lot. After 4-5 hours of looking at vintage muscle cars and listening to some live blues, we were sweaty and spent.

Your salesman at the Honda (I think that’s a Honda??) dealer should be able to tell you when their bumper repair guy (airbrush) comes in. He should be able to fill and touch that up. If the damage is worse than I can see in the photos (maybe pushed in more than I can see in a 2D photo??), then a body shop can repair and paint. Should be pretty much undetectable after either one of those.
Being a Phillies fan Harry K was a staple for me growing up in the 80s.
When Harry first arrived on the Phils broadcast I didn't like him. I guess I had gotten used to Byrum Saam and Bill Campbell. But soon I warmed up to him.
Ah, AM radio, that does bring back memories. Back in the early to mid 60s I used to do a lot of DXing on the AM band. The clear channel stations, WLS 890 in Chicago and 1090 in Little Rock were easy. My father helped me string about 200 feet of copper wire outdoors, and reception really improved after that.
But these days? I cannot for the life of me remember the last time I listened to AM radio.
Simple (as in easy) roof repairs can usually be done by a local handyman for significant savings. Unfortunately, the guy I used to call on had a stroke and is no longer available.
A few months ago, the roof on my storage building sprang a leak. I hired one of the local guys to fix it, but he really didn't know what he was doing. I climbed up on the ladder to show him, fell and cut my hand open requiring 4 stitches. Next time I'll just pay the roofer.
He did get the roof fixed though. $200 for materials, $100 for labor, and I was able to finish up the job with a rag tied around my hand. Still better to pay the roofer $500 to $1,000.
I’m about 100 miles from Philly right now and 1060 the news station doesn’t come in clearly at all.
Doubtful these crappy tuners of today would pick up those far away stations like the old ones did.
Are you sure? I have picked up Philly stations before and I am quite a bit further than 100 miles. The first question I have is have you tried to find it at night or just during daylight hours.

RIP Vin!!!

Yeah, I saw a few the other day here in Myrtle Beach but I don’t think that’s what you meant.
Where have you been lately. You almost fall into the category of being a hit and run poster.

Here in Ontario the government bought our votes by giving us back our license fees...it's about $250.
So the scammers are out there telling people that if they want their license sticker rebate send in all of your bank information etc. so that they can deposit the money into your account....but, of course, these emails are not from the government.

Pregnant girlfriend

IIRC the P300 with the 4 banger had a sub 6 second 0-60 time which is pretty decent and while slower that the R type it's plenty powerful for daily driving. Plus I think the F Type is now strictly V8's and also about 25% more expensive.
