Thing is, the diesel trucks and Escalades do a lot more damage to the roads than Honda Civics. If we're going to detach vehicle taxes from fuel usage, there needs to be a weight component.

Diesel trucks (assuming pickups) and SUVs are basically ignored in pavement design. Damage to roads and bridges comes from axel load calculations for various heavy vehicles such as tractor trailers, dump trucks, and tri-axles. Tri-axles are the worst.

Don’t forget sales tax. In NY that’s about another 14 cents.

Just for your info, that 61 cents a gallon tax in PA is on top of the fed tax of almost 20 cents a gallon. You do the math, that would make me sick if I did it.

Not exactly. Everyone should contribute their fair share of taxes, especially taxes that pay for roads and highways. If you choose to drive a bigger car or a car that uses more fuel, you should pay extra for that privilege, like a luxury tax only an extra charge because you want to drive a larger or faster car....that happens to use more fuel.

But EV drivers want to drive on highways ICE drivers are paying a much larger portion of the bill for.
By that "logic", ICE drivers should pay a bigger share, as they are burning fossil fuels that could harm the environment. They could choose to drive EVs, as well. Which makes as much sense as putting a luxury tax on Escalades.

Using that logic, people who weigh more and use up more natural resources such as food and oxygen should pay higher taxes too. People who are more ecologically responsible should pay less!

That would be another losing point for electrics, as they are much heavier than ICE vehicles.

tart getting weathered. I polished them today and what a nice difference. You can see the styling details inside the headlamp enclosure.

The government is famous for giving away money to support what they feel is a good cause. Like it’s their money that’s being given away and us taxpayers are just innocent bystander. And people wonder why I cheat on my taxes.

But, you are only calculating the federal tax. Based on the total tax on gas in PA (rounded to 80 cents per gallon) once an EV owner drives more than 5K miles per year in PA, (averaging your stated 20 miles per gallon), he is being subsidized by ICE owners.

I did a quick check of the total gas tax in Illinois and it’s around 70 cents per gallon. If 70 cents is correct and using the same parameters used above, an ICE owner in Illinois is subsidizing an EV owner once the EV owner drives more than 5,700 miles per year.

Based on a $200 EV registration cost in PA and Illinois, ICE owners in PA would be more philanthropic than ICE owners in Illinois but you guys are still doing pretty good on the philanthropic curve. In other words you guys ain’t exactly cheap.

Looks great. Dull, faded headlights can make a car look like it’s in poor shape no matter how nice the rest is.

It's still tax revenue that ICE drivers are paying....while the EV guys get away with a $100 payment with unlimited mileage. No wonder they cost less to drive. Once more people have EVs the tax on electricity will skyrocket.......for now it makes it seem that EVs are less costly to operate than they are.

I saw one of these today. It looks huge in real life, especially the overhang behind the front wheel. It looks great in black, and I like the smooth lines and the enormous windows.

Please don’t get me started about where the gas tax goes because here in PA it sure as hell isn’t all spent on roads. If it was, with the gas tax as high as it is here, we’d have the best roads in the country but we don’t… not even close.

And don’t get me started on all the other taxes we have and how much we get our money’s worth from them.

Not true. My wife married me when I had lost my real job (after 16 years) and I had a crappy job and a crappy car...a Cavalier. On our first date which was a walk through the neighborhood, I asked if she wanted to go out for dinner she said lets get a pizza and take it to your place......all the others wanted to go to a fancy restaurant.
So would I switch to someone who is interested in me now.......and besides, I would lose half of all my possessions, maybe even lose the E!

At some carshow/cruise-in recently I saw an Impala wagon like this. Beautiful, other than
the wheels weren't original. Bah.

Usually it's the Buick wagons of this generation at car shows along with maybe an Olds.

To make this post longer... When I see one of these Chevies, I recall a girl who drove one to high school. I was picking up my son after school daily and she started to pull out in front of a slow moving car. She slammed on the brakes when she saw the car. The Caprice poirpoised like a whale.
The softness of the suspension was dramatic.

I have my own spreadsheet calculator, but it is very much NJ specific, as your should be specific to your state.

I have never leased a car nor do I ever plan to. So, I’m obviously dumb about the terms used. What is the difference between a “down payment” and “due at signing”? I’m guessing it could be taxes but that’s just my ignorant guess.

The dealer fee can be whatever the dealer wants it to be, depending on your state. Acquisition fee varies by financial institution

Here in FL we are now sprinting toward 2 grand on total dealer BS fees, not even including acquisition fee for the lease, usually in form of two, three or even more separate items, one big position ($1000-1200), two smaller called "agency fee", "electronic filing" (typically couple oh hundred each) and it looks like they keep inventing new ones every quarter. Acquisition fees are pushing going close to $1000 for many brands. And of course we get exceptional value "protection packages" preinstalled on stock cars for about 10 times their actual value. ADMs are still around, but thanks God slowly fading away. Before you blink that price on the advertising can turn into something 30-50 percent higher OTD, even without ADM.

I've been looking to order replacement for my 430 GC. Pretty much same model, perhaps 440, some extra things, like ventilated seats. But I can't even test drive one now - my dealer has ZERO 4-series in stock, that includes coupes and convertibles.

Not looking forward the pricing conversation, especially that they were bought by a soulless chain corporation with some outrageous practices. I was waiting for things to normalize, but they seem to be nowhere near that for new BMWs - and apparently 4-series has the worst availability of them all.

Get a euro delivery order in? Seems like that will cut a bunch if the nonsense out.

Can you just go out of state instead? I have heard those Fla horror stories a lot. I know the Ford dealer I used in philly has orders from all over including Florida. About a $400 doc fee, and that’s it other than tax and DMV costs.

I had a couple of great bmw dealers near me in jersey. Maybe not lowest price, but competitive, and a great experience with no BS. Up here, less competition and I think they treat you like they are doing you a favor

For many years now I’ve heard that Florida is a snake pit when it comes to buying a car. My now departed brother who lived in Del Ray Beach bought a convertible one December here in the Burgh because dealers down there played too many games to suit him.

When our cousin and nephew heard that he was seriously considering doing that, they offered to drive it down to him. He took them up on their offer and bought them plane tickets to get them back home after they spent a week in the sunshine at his house.

I know you more than likely can’t do something like that but if you bought/leased from a dealer out of state you could pay to have it shipped to you. From what you describe about all the shenanigans that you have to endure where you are, you almost certainly will come out ahead. Have you ever thought about doing that?

BMW doesn't do Euro delivery, any longer. But, you can buy the car from any dealer and take Performance Center delivery in South Carolina.

I went to the dealership today. They have a $7,500 Privilege To Buy Fee. So the lease was $605 per month 🤦‍♂️. The salesperson was nice and mentioned that the $7,500 is where some negotiation can happen. I left.

Good for you. If that were me I’d have left so fast my skivvies would have been on fire by the time I got to my car. And no, I don’t carry a fire extinguisher but my A/C works great.

Yikes, TO Toyota needs to be avoided.

Have you tried over the hill in Ventura or Oxnard? Or, closer to the SF Valley? Expand your search area to see what kind of deal you can find.

FYI, the dealer fee is capped at $85 in California, so that helps out. DMV fees are roughly 1.1% of MSRP.

I drove one a couple weeks back to back with a regular Corolla and the acceleration on the hybrid was amazing & has me thinking of eventually going in that direction. Our local Toyota store where I used to work also has that "ridiculous" admin fee on all their vehicles but it's at $4995. Just laughed as seriously, who would pay that for a lowly Toyota Corolla...or for any vehicle? That's just passed "ridiculous" as far as I'm concerned. No way would I ever pay that & will just keep what I got if I run into that when I'm finally ready to change vehicles. I'm lucky in that I don't need to buy anything, I can just keep what I got for another four to five years and still be under 100K miles. I will need to replace one tire if I decide to keep the Golf as one of them, the oldest one, is showing wear. Think I've had the other tree replaced under the road hazard policy if I'm not mistaken...it's been at least two of them, that much I do know.

From what I understand, if I need to change only one tire, it has to match the other one tread wise on that axle or it might screw up the abs braking system. Is this really true? If so, it might be better just to replace both but with a less expensive tire to save a bit on the cost. The price of tires has gone up since the pandemic from what I've seen. Just need to explore what options I do have here. I have seen other vehicles with mismatched tires on them and was wondering if that really is a good thing to do?
