I was talking to my salesguy a few weeks ago about what I was looking for to replace the BMW. He also lives pretty close to me, so I see him at home occasionally when I go past.

He told me late last week that he ordered a Legacy Sport for me out of their "pipeline".

I still don't know what I'm going to do, but I called Subaru this morning to see what they would do. They are going to email a voucher for $750.

This is going to get interesting. :#

If you buy from that Subie dealer how long do you think it will take to get the title this time? Maybe you can make that part of the negotiation, like 45 days or they owe you life time oil changes at 7K miles.

That won't be a problem. They will be writing me a check. No finance company for them to mess with.

I’m gonna guess the trade in value of the BMW is greater than the purchase price of the Subaru, even after fees and taxes are considered.

The car isn't terrible, but the IP looks like an aftermarket accessory and the performance isn't really exceptional.

I don't dislike digital IPs, I dislike digital IPs that are poorly designed. I love the digital IP in my C43; it has multiple configuration options that allow me to set it up almost exactly how I want information to be displayed. The BMW IP? To me it appears to have been designed primarily to look different- with little to no thought given to readability or usability.

I financed it at 0% (I think). It was a 2020. After a while I just paid it off.

That wasn't the one I had trouble getting the title for though. That was my wife's Ascent.

I'm going to wait until the Legacy Sport comes in to decide. It's supposed to be here this month according to the email Subaru sent me.

The Sport has almost all of the things I liked about my Touring XT, but not the stuff I really didn't want and never used.

Plus, it has some red accents that, for some reason, I like.

I've been driving my son's Tacoma for a little over a week and a half. I'm pleasantly surprised with it. Gas mileage is slightly better than my wife's Highlander and the 2019 TRD Sport Long Bed Tacoma at right around 21.2 mpg. The short bed and high sidewall 16" tires make for a smooth ride. The suspension setup is perfect for the roads I drive on that are littered with pot holes, broken pavement, & steel construction plates. If you jump on the throttle, it moves. It is very well screwed together with absolutely no squeaks or rattles.

My son has been driving the Wrangler back and forth to school. He commutes 12 miles 1 way. He's putting about 24 miles on it each day as opposed to the close to 70 miles I do. He gets home earlier than me and leaves later in the AM which gives it a chance to fully charge every night with the L1 charger. He's also doing most of his driving in electric mode.

bummer to hear. HS parking lots are a menace to start with, so both my kids only got to take well "patina'd" cars. and told to park in the back and wait for everyone else to leave first.

only issue was actually when my son's Contour was parked. his best friend was parked next to him and backed out, turned too soon, and creased the door. His dad made him pay to fix it as a lesson.

Your son's incident is also a good example of how useful rear cross path is, especially on something as long as a Pick Up. You can get a lot of truck out there before you can really see what is coming.

mine came in handy today in the Acura. Backing out of a parking spot at a restaurant, angled parking, on a bend in the lot. Pitch black, and raining, and there was a large SUV parked close to my right side. I start backing out after looking, and get a few feet out and someone pulls in tight to the cars and whips around the bend. The sensors "saw" well before the mirrors could so I had already hit the brakes before I got a visual. Probably would have stopped in time, and was backing up slow, but that extra second or 2 can really make the difference between a hit or a miss.

Also why it is good to back in when you can! Or pull through. But backing out in a tight, crowded parking lot, is always a highly risky move.

The Neon should be cheap to insure for HS students, most of the time a tow truck has to take it out of the parking lot releasing all liability for your own insurance.

    @nyccarguy - How’s the Tacoma working out?

So Wednesday AM my wife gets a call from the “Head of School” at my son’s school. She tells my wife that Andre caused damage to another student’s vehicle and didn’t report it so she feels that Andre should have his driving privileges at school revoked for 3 months. My wife explains that there’s no other way we can get him to school and that there has to be an explanation for this. The woman then says; well how about 1 month?

My wife calls and tells me this. I hang up with her and call the “Head of School.” I apologize on behalf of my son. Ask her what happened. I asked her for the phone number for the other parents so I could work it out with them. I then assure her that the only thing that matters is that nobody got hurt. I then explain to her that I work in the city and have to be at work at 7:30 AM and that my wife is currently participating in an IOP program and can’t drive him either.

She tells me that she thinks the vehicle he’s driving is too big for him to handle and she questions his driving abilities. I told her that’s the vehicle we got for him because it is what we can afford. I also assured her that my wife and I wouldn’t have allowed him to take his road test if we didn’t think he was an excellent driver.

She then asks if we have another vehicle he can drive. Instead of arguing with her, I tell her we have a Jeep he can drive for 30 days.

So what happened? He put the car in reverse, checked the camera, looked down at the dash board for a sec, then started backing up without doing a second check over his shoulder or in the mirrors. He hit a girls car driving by.

The good. Minimal damage to the Tacoma. I’m not going to get it fixed for a while, but can get it done by where I work for $200. I spoke with the girl’s mom who could not have been nicer.

The bad. She took it to 2 body shops for an estimate. 1 place told her $3,700 and the other place $4,200.

So this girl saw a car backing out and just proceeded without a care in the world. I have that happen all the time when backing up and I’m always prepared for that because the backer is usually deemed at fault even if the other person is driving like a dope.

Yes, the way insurance companies are run, you can deliberately ram someone in a parking lot at 155 MPH, and if they are backing out, they'll be at fault.

This is why best practices is to back into the parking lot space, and pull forward out of the space, as going forward you don't have extra liability in the event of someone else's negligence.

I’ve been thinking about why my sons ‘23 Tacoma drives so much better than my ‘19. I think the answer is less weight. 12” less of body. No sunroof. Smaller wheels.

Smaller wheels probably helps the ride the most. Less weight might make it more maneuverable. Is the 23 a cab and a half or just shorter bed?

@nyccarguy had a long- bed.. Pretty rare. But, actually, they should have made the ride less choppy.

Hey everyone, the "other" Andre here. Haven't been over here in ages, because my car buying hasn't been that chronic, to be honest! I've only had two new vehicles in my life: a 2000 Intrepid base model purchased back in November 1999, and then a new, but leftover, 2012 Ram bought in September 2012.

Despite their reputation, my Intrepid was a pretty good car, but a hit and run in the parking lot totaled it in November 2009, with about 150,000 miles on it. And yes, the original 2.7 V6 and even more amazing, the original automatic transmission! The damage wasn't that bad, but it was enough to rip a pretty substantial wiring harness apart, and that made a bunch of idiot lights turn on. Part of me wanted to hang onto it and try fixing it, but insurance laws in Maryland make it not so easy to do that. I think I would have had like 90 days to get it fixed, and inspected, and would just get a salvage title, so I figured the car had a good run, let it go.

I replaced it with a used 2000 Park Ave Ultra, that only had about 56,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, that car didn't age well, and needed a ton of work, so I took it off the road in early 2016, and used the Ram as my daily transportation. My Dad passed away in early 2017, and I inherited his '03 Regal LS. Used that as my daily driver. It only had about 67,000 miles on it when I started driving it, and I took it to 108,000. Even though that's not really high mileage, the transmission was starting to go. And the plastic intake manifold. Muffler, other emissions components, and both rear windows stopped working, so it was shades of those late 70's downsized GM intermediates (Malibu, LeMans, et al) that had the stationary rear door windows that people still gripe about today when they see one of those posted on a classic car forum.

So, this past Tuesday, I drove off in this...And came back home in this...
Here's me doing a corny pose with it at the dealer...And, at home with its cousin...

I’m glad you made it into the modern era. I remember when you had a couple of 70s New Yorkers. That was when Chrysler was actually Chrysler. I got one of the last Iacocca Chryslers myself.

    Andre,

Yep, the Charger's getting garaged. The truck got kicked out. That hood scoop takes a bit to get used to, when behind the wheel. It actually doesn't seem to block the view, but, and this is probably blasphemy to the Mopar crowd, but it makes me feel like I'm driving a Mustang!

I didn't like the "power dome" hood on the new M240i that I test drove; to me it made the car feel larger than it actually was.

Made it to Dearborn this afternoon. Traffic on I-75 was heavy the entire way and I barely got to use the cruise control--kind of made me regret not renting a Tesla so I would have Autopilot. I still had 3/8, but went ahead and topped off the tank, since the GF and I will be driving around a decent bit the next two days when she's here. The Maverick's OBC said I got 32.7 MPG. I calculated it manually and that figure came out to 31.7 MPG. Very impressed, either way!
