I wouldn't say that. If I do buy a new car it could be my last new car, I want to be careful about what I buy. I would definitely consider a hybrid at this time.
I see that there are self-charging hybrids coming on to the market....that sounds good. They don't have to be plugged in.
I am watching what is happening, things are developing quickly. The freezing weather has caused more questions. The cost of a new battery could be huge...some say $30000.
What I get from some people is you should research things before you buy anything......and then if you don't just blindly buy one it's out of fear.
I like to find the answers before I make a major purchase, and I don't know everything about everything like some people do.

Are you sure you’re not whistling past the graveyard? I don’t think EV fires are a substantial danger any more than Hun/Kia engine fires are but they get media play. It’s one more thing to keep track of just like checking your oil.
When the 4xe is plugged in I check on it every 30 minutes- 24/7.

I think checking you oil every 30 minutes is overkill but that’s just me.😂

Ha ha. hilarious. One friends Tesla ran out of juice. He charged it up a bit and tried to start it, and it blew out a generator or something. Cost $2000 to fix. He was told you aren't supposed to let the charge go below 5% (I guess you missed it when I wrote about it last summer). I'd do some research before thinking you know all the facts.

The article I linked said something similar, don't let it go below 20% in the cold weather or it could cost you $thousands. I'd make sure you know that before you run out of juice....maybe you don't know everything!.

Like I said, my friend ran out of juice in his Tesla and it cost him $2000 to get it fixed. I find that people who think they know everything usually don't.

Can natural gas cause an explosion in your home? Can the electrical wires potentially short and cause a fire? Can your gas powered ICE car catch fire? My advice, sell the house and car, avoid the risk.

On another forum there are a number of people who blather about how bad certain makes/models are but in reality have yet to sit in one- never mind drive or own one.

For example, one guy was slamming Jeeps and when asked about his experience with the brand he replied,
"I guess a video I watched about a lady's new Jeep Cherokee being in the shop more than her driving it had some influence."

Another dimwit was advising a guy not to look at an M3; I called him on the source of his BMW knowledge and he sputtered that "all luxury cars cost more to fix." I responded,
"Congratulations! Your knowledge of BMW maintenance, repairs, and running costs is essentially zero- thus you qualify for the heralded title of [name of forum] BMW Expert!
You will retain that title in perpetuity as long as you never even sit in a BMW; you must further pledge to take no steps whatsoever to actually learn anything about them.
Well done!!!"

Good point. Yes, I have read articles for and against EVs. There are no definitive answers, it depends on what you are using the car for whether it suits you or not. I find that lithium batteries are a long way from being reliable and cost effective, and as far as the loss of charging power in cold weather that is real...not a conspiracy theory. Also I understand about 25% of public electric chargers are broken. Some people have found that replacement batteries could cost $30000 (this is from a real newspaper). It's foolish to think these problems don't exist. It might be true or not true, but I want to study it more.

I think I would seriously consider a non-plug-in hybrid at this point in time.

I think I would seriously consider a non-plug-in hybrid at this point in time.

I would consider a plug in hybrid, most plug ins would have enough electric only range to cover my daily use for 80-90% of the time. If I need to go further or it's bitter cold or I can't find a charger I still have the ICE.

The county auditor called today to say they are revising my house square footage down almost 600 sq/ft.
That should save quite a bit on taxes after it is processed.

As I'm intrigued by the (potential) electric future, but not desiring to be an early adopter, I bought the PHEV. For just the reason snake (and others have) noted.
While I understand the issues with acquiring the precious materials required to produce the batteries (and similar issues are faced with other products...), and that electricity has to be generated somewhere, I like the idea of my short trip runs not engaging the ICE. For that moment in time, I'm not contributing greenhouse gasses.
Yesterday, I simply wanted to back the A7 up a bit in the driveway, hit the start button and roll back a few feet electrically. No dinos awakened. Neato.
And yes I can confirm, and have posted of, the sometimes frustrating instances of broken chargers. Thank goodness for the late dinosaur pool available to me! But, charging at home is a non-event, even at 110v.

Just curious but how slooow is it charging on 110V.

Just out of principle I couldn’t live with that. Maybe that’s because installing a level 2 charger in my garage (no more than a ten foot wire run) is a 2 hour MAX DIY job for me.

Now another question, how much do they charge just for the installation? C’mon, make me feel good.

It is slow, as I'm sure you know (as you have a much greater grasp of all things electrical than I). But in my case, ~16 hours to fill the 14.1kwh battery. Slower in the very cold, of course. So, evening into the next morning and I'm good to run errands sans ICE. My car is rated ~24 miles on a full charge.
It's been a while since I've gotten a quote to install a 240v in the garage, but I think it was over $2k. As the Audi comes with a 240v adaptor, I don't necessarily need a charging unit on the wall.

Thanks. I just did a quick internet search of the top 10 rated level 2 charger only prices. It looks like less than $600 is the going price with one outlier going for $900. Didn’t spend the time to see what $900 gets you but that unit was not the top rated one. In any case, if $2000 is the going rate (I’m sure that depends on input wire length) it’s well worth it to me to be a DIYer for this job.

When we were evaluating Grand Cherokee 4xe's we planned to do the same, at least initially.

Exactly, my friend wanted a Chev Equinox but the dealer said it would take months to come in. He went online and for fun built a Tesla. He was surprised he could get one delivered in 2 weeks! So he bought it, not knowing much about it.
He plugged it in and found it took 3 days to charge. So he had to get a Level 1 charger. He is the one who can out of power on the way home and it cost $2000 because he tried to charge it when it had 0 power left.
He's a smart guy and likes cars, he isn't very technologically informed.

When I compare utility usage from the same period one year ago sometimes I used more electricity, sometimes less. It was a similar usage pattern when I had the i3.

How do you figure they missed the mark by that much, incompetence or malice to get more tax money out of you? I bet not 1 person in 10 would even notice the error let alone complain.

When I was in the Navy I was in a transport squadron and I was part of a flight crew as a loader on a C130 and other planes in our squadron.

When the Cuban Crisis hit I remember one time in a C130 we were redirected so many times the pilot said something like, “well, when we left I knew where we were going. It would be nice if someone told me where we’re going already before we run out of gas. I think that was our 4th redirection I just got”.

That got me thinking, how did we win 2 World Wars with that kind of communication?

It took 18 months to get our house taxes posted to the county. We just paid for the lot prior to that.
In the mean time, I looked at other homes with the same floor plan to get an idea of what the taxes could be.
When the assessment was posted, I knew it was off.
Once I saw the sketch of the floor plans on the auditor site, I knew what the problem was and looked at the reported square footage.
I'll put it down to a mix up, numbers were close to what I think the house next door is, which was built around the same time.
The Construction Manager, most likely to have provided the numbers, is no longer around.
He seemed pretty pretty full of himself but unorganized.

For example, it took is a long time to get the basement door we ordered.
When we finally got it, he bought just the door, not a pre hung setup, so had to be modified to fit.
I told him if he had bought a pre hung, they could have just switched doors and had a setup for the basement door in their next house they were building, at almost no cost.
Told him I didn't need the old door and he could take it with him.
He made some excuse that he didn't have room in his truck for it and would come back for it, but never did.
It will be here for the next owners, if they want to use it.

In our state, your initial value for tax purpose on your home will be the purchase price.

Same for Ohio if it hasn't been changed since we bought our house. I assume the value then is adjusted when the county does the triennial reevaluations. All homes in a similar area are adjusted based on sale values of other homes during the 3 years. We just had one and are now paying for the 2023 adjusted prices in 2024 tax bills.

When I was in the Navy I was in a transport squadron and I was part of a flight crew as a loader on a C130 and other planes in our squadron.

When the Cuban Crisis hit I remember one time in a C130 we were redirected so many times the pilot said something like, “well, when we left I knew where we were going. It would be nice if someone told me where we’re going already before we run out of gas. I think that was our 4th redirection I just got”.

That got me thinking, how did we win 2 World Wars with that kind of communication?

The pilot was commenting on a WWII story in an aviation magazine. A B-17 (IIRC) pilot decided to take a shot at flying an A-36 that had made a forced landing at his base. He was used to piloting a heavy bomber with four Wright Cyclone radials and here he was trying out the dive bomber version of the P-51, which was powered by an Allison V-12. He accidentally entered a snap roll and almost tore the vertical and horizontal stabilizers off. Looking back the writer said he was lucky he didn't kill himself and destroy the airplane.
