Congratulations but that kind of mileage is something I never want to see in a car I own. I’m still hung up when 50K miles was the half-life of cars. I know that’s not the case anymore, and far from it, but I’m spoiled.

My ‘15 Genny just cracked 13,100 miles last week. 10K more and it’s gone. Mrs. j’s ‘18 Subie bought in the Spring of 2019 with 7K miles has around 34K now. Still pondering that one and still spoiled.

I took the Acura through a car wash this week to get the salt off. Wife gave me grief for letting the clothes slap at it. I thought about telling her to go out in below freezing weather to hand wash but thought better of it. That car is almost 5 years old now and has plenty of nicks and damage. Pretty sure the car wash Won’t hurt it.

That's how I would describe the end of my professional career. Next month will be two years since I was laid off from my last company.

Since then, unemployement benefits and a series of part-time jobs, along with starting to draw down on my retirement funds and the monthly interest generated from my inheritence, have kept the creditors at bay.

While I am still applying for new positions, I am losing my optimism for securing something, given my age and the state of the job market.

Not that I was looking for a big retirement party and the proverbial gold watch, but I was at least hoping to determine on my own when I would quit work and start retirement.

The good news is that my retirement funds are in reasonable shape, so long as I don't take too much from it on an annual basis - at least, that's what my investment counselors at Fidelity tell me.

I am starting to look at ways to reduce the expense side of the ledger, primarily the size of my mortgage payment. I've got a fair amount of equity in my current home, and if I use that as a down payment to purchase something, somewhere, in the $400K range, my mortgage will be cut by 1/3, even with the higher interest rates.

Just trying to figure out where that might be is the issue - certainly not the Metro Denver area.

You could always move to Kansas. I see all those YT car guys buying houses left and right so they must be pretty cheap.

I prefer touchless washes on cars I care about, but there is a new clothes-slapper wash very close to my house. Also, the clothes-slapper wash at Springhurst is exceptionally nice. Very well lit at night, and free microfiber towels to dry off “problem areas” that the dryer missed.

I was going to say, I’d be miffed if my car was getting whipped by those brushes. For salt removal I use the brushless with the undercarriage wash.

Real estate is inexpensive pretty much anywhere in "flyover" country, outside of the big cities.

Wife has commented on wanting warmer weather, which I'll admit is appealing. I'm currently hung up on St. George, UT (Utah's Dixie).

Oldfarmer, had my yearly review on Friday. All went well, as usual, been on the job at Enterprise for 5 years now. Did 6 at Hertz plus my first year as an independent contractor. So, January will be the start of my 12th year as a rental car transporter. Who ever would've thought I'd end up here? But, must say, do enjoy the job. Got a $.35 pay increase to boot, but hey...ain't here for the money. No plan on quitting any time soon, will just see how things go. Did hear some sad news though. A co-worker who was out for back surgery passed last week from a blood clot. Haven't heard exactly all the details yet but when I found out Friday, I was profoundly sad all day. And the funny thing is, I didn't really know him that well. We just started to work on the same crew Friday's about 6 weeks ago. And he wasn't old either, think in his early 80's but not totally sure. Just shows me how we can't take life for granted and we could be gone at any time!

First week of the kitchen reno complete and I survived. Since the back door is being relocated that meant the deck needed alteration and so the mitaswells resulted in new decking, stairs and rails, which in truth were needed anyway as they were over 20 years old. The other big change was removal of an abandoned chimney in a corner to free up more room, which involved demo of the walls surrounding it before taking it out brick by brick. That also necessitated removal of a large pantry cabinet adjacent which meant everything had to be emptied into a vast assortment of bins. Good opportunity to cull some of the kitchen stuff lurking in the back which hasn’t been used in forever. It’s hard on Lucy the cat though, too much noise and too many strangers. The crew tried their best to minimize dust and cleaned up as well as they could later but it still was pretty messy.

I found a new back door at HD and when it was delivered yesterday the delivery guy asked if I bought a used door. That was driven by the shape it was in when he took it off the truck. Since I had bought a new door you can imagine my surprise. Somehow it had been badly damaged in the 2 days between seeing it and being delivered. He took it back no problem and the store was good about immediately issuing a credit but now the replacement is about 10 days away. Grrr. Meanwhile in an accident of bad timing, 4 new windows are getting installed in the bedrooms by a different bunch on Monday. Poor Lucy will be beside herself. Up next, I need to pick flooring and decide on colors. I’m going to investigate linoleum which now comes not only in sheets but also click panels.

Need to wax the Golf as it's been awhile. Water still beads up and the gloss is a deep blue but after a wash last week, ran my finger down the paint and it felt very dry. One knows that just waxed smooth feeling and it definitely ain't there! It's been a few years since I've had it waxed so I might wash it and use some spray on detailer I have to see ow it looks/feels afterwards. Did check into a full detail at the house but those folks charge anywhere from $100 to $200 to do the whole clay bar to waxing bit. But, just might be worth it after I get the front brakes and coolant change taken care of.

I took my wife’s EQE to the touchless yesterday and quite frankly it did a crap job. Car was still dirty. Waste of money. I ended up spraying the car down and drying it again.

Probably did more damage to the paint than just taking it through a normal wash.

On a lease that I know I'm not buying out at the end, I have no qualms about using a swirl-o-matic. They don't deduct for swirl marks on lease-end inspections.

I just had an update.

If I want to go to Cronic Buyers, for example, I usually click on "Home" then My Bookmarks. Now that makes me sign in again. If I scroll up to the top of this page and click on My Bookmarks, it works OK.
Every few weeks or months the system kicks me out and I have to sign back in but not every time. I began thinking it was jmonroe trying to collect dues.😂

Now things seem to be working OK. Time will tell.

Painting update!

Master bath has been painted and the trim has been painted as well. The laundry room walls and ceiling have also been painted - decided that trim will not be painted in that room

I was told that an electrician is coming to the house on Wednesday to look over and give a quote for some additional hall lighting, and perhaps closet lighting. We shall see.

My eligibility date (which was being vested in the pension and being at least 60 years old) was just shy of 5 years ago. The 1,081 days gets me to the end of the month that I hit 20 years. I can cut that down by 10 months by applying my accrued sick and vacation time.

I really don't want to go back to the private sector, been there, done that. I would lose too much in benefits.

On our current plan (65th birthday), if we make it that far, should be somewhere in the 850 days. Sounds like way too much though. Hopefully that dials back at least 1 year!

The wife is all excited about asking about going to reduced full time next fall, and doing 1 day a week of baby care. Our DILs father plans to do a day also after he retires from FT teaching after this school year. That should help them out and save a lot of money (daycare is expensive!) I think it is a great idea if she can go to 80%, possibly 60%. She actually did that when our kids were little so she would be home when they got back from school. Still gets benefits (medical) which is the main reason to keep working I think.

Congrats on the raise. You’re right, it’s not the money but those little raises sort of acknowledge your worth. That’s why many Enterprise drivers retire feet first. We’ve got quite a few guys in their 80s who do it for the interesting traveling. For example we were at West Point Thursday staging cars for the big wigs attending the Army-Navy game. We had to have background checks done before we could deliver the cars.

A really good automatic car wash with cloth does the best job. “Touchless” washes are generally useless.

If any of you driveway washers do it with no cloth, let me know how that works out. 🙄

Supposedly, the Pilot Flying J in Walton, KY (just south of the I-71/I/75 split) now has EVgo charging. Could be handy for anyone traveling along the corridor from Cincinnati to Louisville. The Pilot in Pendleton, KY (closer to Louisville) also has EVgo charging, but the problem with relying on that one is that there aren't any other fast chargers fairly close. Someone should install one at the Carrolton or Sparta exits, which are about halfway between.

Yes, the brush type car wash does a better job but at what price. As a former car wash “professional operator” I know that dirt and grit can lodge in those big cloth thumpers and scratch the clear coat. Same with the bristles on the spinning brushes. Over time you’ll notice. While not perfect the brushless systems at least washes most of the salt off.

When I hand wash I use a microfiber mitt and drying towels which I run through the washing machine after each use.

I read that charging stations will soon be available at Love travel centers. That would be fantastic! Would make cross country EV driving feasible.

Just make sure it isn’t supposed to be holding one of the wiper arms on. Probably too big, but can’t hurt to check.

I usually just do the touchless for the undercarriage blast. And expect the sides to come out slimy. I generally towel it down to take care of that. I only use a car wash in an emergency in the winter to get salt off the underneath.

Though yesterday we did drive past a 5 bay spray it yourself car wash. Hard to find those up here. I’ll use that next time.

I thought you bought one of those $30 gizmo’s that you attach to your hose and roll it under the car. I’m pretty sure I posted a link of the one grandson #1 bought. He thought it worked pretty good (a good bit of junk in the driveway).

The terminology is difficult. The one attached to the primary/master/main bedroom would/should not be called the main bath because it is only used by those who sleep in that bedroom. Everyone else uses what I would call the main bath in the house wherever it’s located, which wouldn’t be that one.

Yes, the brush type car wash does a better job but at what price. As a former car wash “professional operator” I know that dirt and grit can lodge in those big cloth thumpers and scratch the clear coat. Same with the bristles on the spinning brushes. Over time you’ll notice. While not perfect the brushless systems at least washes most of the salt off.

When I hand wash I use a microfiber mitt and drying towels which I run through the washing machine after each use.

You’re supposed to take it through the big door that’s open. The small door is for the pizza delivery guy. But don’t worry about that, “the guy” at the car wash will direct you.

I'm pretty sure the guy who returned that Subaru not to long ago could get through that small door, or at least make it wider.
