Was supposed to get my Urban Artifact delivery today.
Saw the truck out front of the house.
It was there for a while then drove away.
There was a pkg at the door for my wife and a notice of delivery attempt for my pkg.
The driver never rang the bell or knocked on the door.
Spent about 45 minutes n the UPS site but hopefully I was able to redirect it to a nearby UPS store where I can pick it up.

Got my new washer delivered today, but, having a Homer Simpson moment. My old front loader drained directly into the sump pit, with the hose running flat along the ground. ~~Can't do that with the new top loader, as it just dumps the water out as soon as it works its way through the basin.~~ Correction: the radon fan on the top of the sump is pulling so much of a vacuum that it is sucking the water out of the washer tub. So I have a call out to my plumber to come up with a solution, likely installing a separate drain system for the washer with its own built in pump.

I’ve never owned a front loader but don’t understand the difference in how they drain. Why can’t it be routed the same way as before?

Having said that .. a standpipe with a trap is code. I believe 2” is the pipe size

@tjc78 - I edited my post after you quoted it. The radon fan pulls so much of a vacuum that it is sucking the water out of the washing machine's tub. Time for a dedicated drain setup for the washer, I think.

Would a one way valve solve your issue?

I'm guessing that if there's enough suction to drain the washer, there's also enough to open a one-way valve.

Yes, I need to sign because it's alcohol.
Since the driver didn't actually attempt to deliver it, other than leaving the attempted delivery notice, I paid $8 to have it delivered to a local UPS store.
It's mostly for my son in law and I plan on bringing it on our trip to Ellicottville this weekend.
Picking up my new truck tomorrow, rescheduled from today, so we won't be around for tomorrow's delivery window.

The code around here would not allow a washing machine to drain into a sump that might eventually drain into a storm sewer. Washing machines around here must be connected to the main city sewer system or a septic tank system for the house.

FWIW, I’ve never heard of the suction side of a radon fan being connected to a sump in any way. I always thought the suction side had to be connected directly to the earth, well away from ground water. Being connected to a sump I don’t know how it is efficiently removing radon.

tl;dr: I have two suction points on my basement slab, one below the crawlspace liner, and the fourth is on the top of the sump pit.

That's a whole different story. When I bought this house, the previous owners already had a radon fan installed, so I assumed it was taken care of. Did a free test through the state, on a whim, and the level was 10x the "safe" limit. Did two more tests that I paid for, and got similar results. Called a radon company to fix it, they found some problems with the original installation, but it still wasn't reduced to a safe level. I know they lost money on my contract, because they were out here over twenty times. Everything that could be more difficult ended up being so. Supposedly, the slab at the bottom of my basement is eight inches thick. Anyway, the one thing that was keeping my levels high was ingress through the sump pit (which, unfortunately, due to the age and configuration of my house, also serves as a drain for the washing machine, HVAC condensate, and whole house humidifier). So they replaced it with a plastic pit and lid, and put a suction point on top. I kind of wondered whether the significant negative air pressure would create any side effects, and I guess I now have an answer!

Well, it seems like the easy solution is to just add a vent port to the lid so that it doesn't maintain suction, but ensures that any outgoing airflow is through the radon fan. If it is sealed and you have to worry about overflow (water), then you could use a one-way valve on the vent, like what you'd have on standard wastewater plumbing.

The point isn't to keep the system under negative pressure, it is merely to divert the radon gas out of the house before it joins the interior air space.

Right before Christmas this year a local TV station had a segment that showed a couple UPS drivers putting undelivered packages in the trunk’s of their cars in the employee parking lot. The guys were obviously not too bright and the company response was they were temporary hires for the holidays. Makes me think that the regular drivers would know better than to do that in the employee parking lots that are monitored by a slew of security cameras.

A couple years ago, after seeing something like this on TV, I talked to a UPS driver about security cameras in the employees parking lots and he said the company could care less about employees cars being stolen or broken into. The real reason is to catch employees stealing packages. Sounded plausible to me.

Wow, that’s a lot of radon, do you live over a uranium mine? Your house must be very well sealed for it to build up like that although I’ve read that sandy soils tend to get higher concentrations.

Our home was built with just the pipe in the slab to vent the Radon. When we bought the house the levels were a touch high… previous owner had to put the fan in. Luckily for him the builder already had the electric run in the attic over the garage so it was a simple job.

It must be very dependent on the soil. My old house built in 1956 had no radon issues without any system, yet the new home was over the limit.

Pretty sure this is our first Radon discussion ever … proof that we still have more to talk about

Our taxes are the last ones done as she does all her clients first. We always get a refund and since she pays quarterly, we never see it in our account. But right now is her real busy time, so I tend to keep things real quiet since my office is right next to hers.

OF, we got our profit sharing on the 14th like last year but I've heard a lot of grumbling from some co-workers that they got less then last year...much less. Checked on mine and sure enough, was less also but not something I was angry about. There must be a formula they use to get the amounts we all get...all seem to be different. Thinking the amount of years one has been with the company plays a part in the calculation. Since I've never gotten profit sharing before working for Enterprise, am happy with whatever they give us!

Looks like it'll get down to around 54 tonight as a small cold front went through. Doubt we'll get any more cool weather in the 50's any longer. Watching The Weather Channel and saw many places getting snowed in. Do not miss the snow & cold weather anymore honestly and don't get how our son loves Chicago weather after living in South Florida until he was 16. Finished high school in New Hampshire, college in St. Louis & internship in Milwaukee & Chicago. But they love living in Chicago! Spent my first 14 years living in New York & never much cared for the snow. Love weather in the high 70's to be honest like we're having now.

Anyone have any suggestions for nearby attractions and restaurants? I had planned on taking some time off next month, so i'm taking a few extra days in the area, but doubt the weather will be good enough to go up to Yellowstone.

Lived in New Orleans for my four years of college and anyone who goes, must do two things. One is ride the trolly up and down St. Charles Ave. It goes right by Audubon Park and my university. Two is go to Cafe du Monde while in the Quarter. There really is so much to see and walking around The French Quarter at night is absolute fun. A shame that I haven't been back since I graduated but I guess life got in the way. Hopefully one of these years, we'll go back again.

OF, yes, 75% of last years payment sounds about right. But again, free money. It really is a great job for a retiree who wants something to do a few days a week. Even working four days now, still getting around 29 hours per week, give or take. Unlike you guys up north, we don't travel as far as y'all do which is a shame because I really do miss the long distance part of the job. When I started out in early 2013, we'd be driving most of the state, which I loved. There was many weeks we'd be going to Tampa/Sarasota a half dozen times and working twelve to thirteen days in a row was necessary. But we had no set schedule, something I really wanted. Knowing the days I have to work make the weeks just fly by.
Not sure when I'll stop and that depends if our plans to move in a couple of years really happen. Guessing the only way we'd go sooner if my health goes down real quick & then, won't really care. And if that does happen, our girls will step in & do the heavy lifting.

I spent a weekend in NOLA.
We went out at 11 PM stayed out until 5 or 6 AM.
The bars close for an hour at that point.
I never went back either.

I've been to NOLA five times. It's become my favorite city. I still discover new things every time I go, and I have a list of about 100 restaurants I want to try. Great place, just remember to watch out for the "gutter butter" and wear closed-toe shoes.

I visited Boise 30 (!) years ago to attend a conference. Was there almost a week. I absolutely loved it there. I had never been to that part of the world before and became quite enthralled with the terrain, the crystal clear blue sky, and the general feel of the place. They didn’t seem to have many attractions there back then - I remember they took us to a winery out in the countryside one evening but that was about it. But I really liked the city back then. No idea what it’s like now of course.

I am not all that familiar with the area, other than just driving through many, many times. It is a good long drive from Yellowstone; I'd guess at least four hours just going on memory (just looked, and it is double that). The Snake River gorge is nearby (I'd say in the Ontario, OR, area, less than an hour away), which surely has some good hiking options.

Baker City is two hours west - an Oregon Trail town with a good museum and lots of history. They have a great cafe there, though I can't remember the name of it. Just a little hole in the wall place with really good food the last time we were in there.

That’s the Tug Hill Plateau which because of its geography and lake effect gets more snow than almost anywhere else in the state. We used to deliver a lot of cars near there in Watertown. On route I-81 you could be driving in sunny weather one minute and in a blizzard the next.

Snowmobilers love the area because they can ride until May. Once, coming down rt. 12 on the east side we stopped for lunch and the entire parking lot was filled with snowmobiles.

Quick 12 hour storm last night and this morning dropped about 6" of fresh snow. As I was shoveling the driveway, I had time to think...

I know none of us are big fans of those oddly shaped hatchbacks (Juke, C-HR, etc) - but, I wonder if these are the new incarnation of the "personal luxury coupes" from the 70's and 80's.
