@tjc78 - I've had front loaders for 15+ years now. I just leave the door a little bit open, and the gaskets have been fine.

The Eagles just dominated the first half of the game. They let off the throttle in the second half but by then the KC bunch were pretty much done. Loved to see it, more for the KC beat down because nobody likes them much, but all credit to the Eagles.

As to Washers, at the new house we went with LG. Wife liked them. Actually went back to a front loader (will deal with potential gasket mold issues if they are still a thing) because the wife had issues reaching the bottom of the top loader we had at the last house, plus she wanted to put them on pedestals so it would be higher up for easier access (and storage underneath). I just hope I don't ever have to pull them out!

I bought a LG pair in 2010 and they worked well for about 10 years. The dryer went flaky first but still worked, then the front load washer died a couple of years later. A bit of internet research diagnosed the problem as a circuit board that was NLA from LG, so I replaced them both with new LGs. I love how they work, but the new washer has the drum mounted at a steeper angle so after a cycle you have to go really deep into the back to get everything out, which is painful when they aren’t elevated on pedestals.

If I get 10 trouble free years out of them I will be satisfied. Probably won’t be in this house by then anyway.

We have LG. The washer went after about 8 years. Dryer was fine. Top loader with no agitator.

Now, after about 12 years, the dryer is starting to not do well. (electric). Pretty happy with the longevity, overall.

I watched the game for a bit early on.
Saw an Eagles receiver get hit OOB but no flag. Was upset a bit but then thought, They're going to let them play.
After that, saw the OPI on Eagles receiver called on the 4th down play and didn't watch a down after that.
Did check the score a few times.

I complained about that first non-call, too. Son disagreed with me.
I did agree with OPI just because hand to the face.
They completely made up a penalty to push the eagles 5 yards back on a field goal, but Elliot made it anyway, so no matter.
Refs missed a head shot to Mahomes, which is absolutely shocking.
Other than that, a lot of holding calls missed.
Eagles did what they needed to take it out of the refs hands and just dominate and leave no doubt. It is what I hoped for.
Didn’t win any of my many game bets. I did win my bet from Sept for Eagles to win Super Bowl, however. Was $2.50 to win $40.

Agree with you Q. No one can blame the refs for the outcome of this game.

The Chiefs offensive line should be 100% ashamed… no QB could have made good passing plays when continually being hit and pressured.

Still can’t believe the total dominance. The only thing the Chiefs achieved was shutting down Barkley which in turn just let the rest of the offense do their thing

I’m sure the KC fans are moaning about that non-call to the face mask of Mahomes. Might even think that was the turning point of the game. Sure would like to hear the sports talk shows in KC today.

FWIW, if I was the Eagles defensive backfield coach I’d fine the two DB’s who let Mahomes complete that hail-mary TD throw at the end of the game. I know the game was out of hand by then but there is no excuse for both of those guys to turn into spectators like that.

    Enjoy the win.

There are always going to be close calls that could go either way, or at least be debatable. As ling as both teams are unhappy about them the game was likely called fair. The problem is when every call like that favors one of the teams.

The starters had been pulled by then and those were second/third team subs playing at that point. Blame the coaches for the changes if you’re looking for someone to blame for giving up a meaningless TD.

My truck had some salt on it so stopped today while I was out and ran it through the touchless wash (mostly for undercarriage). The. When I got home I realized the Acura actually was a lot crustier. You just don’t notice it as much on a white car. Guess I will be going back over.

To get back on topic, I ordered a new washer to replace my ten year old Samsung front loader. It has had balance/noise problems for years and now it's sometimes squeaking when it's spinning quickly. There's a possibility it could just be the shock absorbers (an easier fix) and not the main bearing (definitely not worth doing), but I don't think it's worth investigating further on a ten year old appliance.

Ordered a top loading LG that was highly rated by Consumer Reports. Lowe's was running a sale and I got an upgraded model for less than the one I initially looked at. I've used the high efficiency top loaders with impellers before and don't have any issues with them. They were willing to deliver it as soon as tomorrow, but I picked a day next week when I know I will be available all day.

My parents bought a Speed Queen washer/dryer set a couple years ago. That brand has a cultlike following, but there are mixed opinions about their most recent redesigns, although they do still offer a "classic" model that is built like their older models.

I wonder if they make them like they used to?

In 1956 when my parents moved from the Burgh to the suburbs, my Dad bought my Mon a matching pair of Speed Queens. The washer died in the late 80’s but the dryer waited until we moved back to the Burgh from SC in 1997 and stayed in my Mom’s house till we found a house.

I’ll answer my own question and say they probably don’t build them like that anymore.

Yes and no... It's a deep rabbit hole. From what I can tell, they're all mechanically stout, but the newer designs use a different agitation pattern that is more gentle, however, some people complain that their clothes aren't getting clean. The "classic" model uses the older agitation pattern, but may be rougher on fabrics; also, you have to turn it out of normal/eco to get a true rinse cycle. Amazingly, the classic model completes a full wash and rinse in something like 35 minutes. People who have had normal warranty problems with their Speed Queen washers have reported very bad customer service. If I'm going to spend 3x the normal cost of a washer for something that is purported to be higher quality, I need more reassurance than what I've described.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,539
I think a lot of appliances, a washer being a prime example, are like cars. Lots of people pine for the old days when they were reliable and long lasting and needed no repairs (though with old cars, that was not really the case, they were just easier to fix!)

But they also want all the comfort and convenience features, cheap to run, quiet, etc. Not simple and boring! And as noted, clothes not getting beat up.

I-87 north of Saratoga was a total mess and I didn’t realize there was ice underneath the slush. As I attempted to pass a slower vehicle the truck suddenly broke loose and assumed a 90 degree position sideways going down the road. I counter steered like mad and the truck kicked back 90 degrees in the other direction. More frantic counter steering and I just barely recovered before a box truck nearly rammed me. As I continued on there were numerous cars and trucks spun out, crashed into the guardrail or flipped over.

I think most people learned to turn into a skid but I think what catches people who are skidding is overcorrection resulting in a skid in the oppose direction. I was lucky that I remembered that and began an opposite turn in as the truck swung back.

Maybe a good investment on that warranty, though!

Mine are Samsung, and they both had issues within five years of new. I'm happy to say, though, that I've used them another five years with no additional problems, so that's promising! Mine are 2016 models that I brought home in late 2018. I got them from a friend who purchased new about two years prior but had only used them for a little over a year before moving to Anchorage (where they sat unused in his garage). For $400, they were a great buy, but not if I hadn't fixed them both when they failed (washer after about six months, dryer about a year after that). I probably have about $650 into them now.

My next set will NOT be Samsung.

I think the only GE appliance I have anymore is my water heater. I have one of their Geospring models they made for a short time before selling it to Bradford White. Installed December of 2013 and still going strong! I use the heat pump mode almost exclusively.

For anyone looking for an offbeat (and economical) Valentine's Day dinner, I highly recommend making a reservation at White Castle. Yes, you will need a reservation, and you will be directed to a busier-than-usual drive through if you don't have one. Yes, they only do this one day a year.

You'll be treated to a host stand and table service at a fast food purveyor known for selling miniature hamburgers "by the sack." The floors are carpeted with paper "rose petals," there's an area with a background for taking selfies, there are decorations hanging from the ceiling and in the windows... There are plastic tablecloths, a rose-like decoration, a battery powered candle, and chocolates on the tables.

Don't expect "fast food" or an attentive server (remember, they only do this one day a year)... But, it's a fun experience. Some people dress up, and you see families with kids, girls' night out, etc. They print special menus, but you can also order off the regular menu. Unfortunately, our location was out of Sloppy Joe sliders (clearly marked on the menu board when we walked in). They were also out of the Mac n Cheese Nibblers, which our server informed me after I tried to order them. I did get to try the French Toast Slider with bacon and jalapeño cheese, and it was really good, although a bit light on the bacon. The jalepeño cheese had a bit more kick than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. The rest of my order consisted of four regular sliders with brown mustard--those are my go-to (although not all locations will put mustard on the sliders and I'm pretty sure not all locations use brown mustard instead of yellow as standard).

We went with shrimp cocktail and goat cheese with toast, greens salads, filet and mahi mahi, cheese cake and flourless chocolate torte. Washed down with 2 glasses of wine each.

I do know a coworker who always goes to White Castle for Valentines though. I remember trying sliders on a call night at a hospital during residency. That did not play out well.

Similar but not the same as White Castle, when I attended UT in Knoxville, Krystal was the go to place on the ‘strip’ (Kingston Pike) after hours. Last time I was in Knoxville in 2017 for the 50th anniversary of the Beta chapter on campus, the Krystal was shuttered. A plus for better digestion!
