Not retired, but I ditched the landline and cable TV a long time ago. I share my parents' Prime account, so I have Prime Video, and they share my HBO/Max (or whatever they call it now) account. I used to share their Netflix account, but Netflix put a stop to that (pro tip: I downloaded a bunch of content to "watch offline" on my iPad the last time I was at their house--sticking it to "the man"). And a friend shares their Disney+/Hulu account with me and about seven other people, lol.

I had the full meal deal cable package minus the movie channels and Netflix until about 3 years ago. I realized I was no longer watching much of anything on these except for sports and so after a bit of negotiating/bluffing on the phone with the nice cable lady I got a newish offering from them, an IP cable service thru TiVo with a skinnier cable channel package and initially saved myself a bundle. The home phone I had since I moved here in ‘97 went away as part of that as all it got was nuisance/spam calls. Now 3 years in, the price has inched up and I find I barely watch the few channels I get except again for sports. They are due for a call back soon.

One thing I’ve found is that between the TiVo service and my Roku there is plenty to watch. YouTube is surprisingly entertaining and some of the Roku offerings are good too. Last week I had their competitor darken my door and offer me internet plus their version of full cable for $80 the first year and some fairly small annual increase guaranteed by contract in each year thereafter. I don’t trust those guys and my brother has what this guy was offering for his cable and hates it so it was pretty easy to turn him down despite big savings.

pretty sure I get most if not all of those on Hulu

I prefer more cylinders so the engine doesn't work as hard. That was a problem the reviewer found in the video. He said that the car had a complicated way to produce power in the 3 cylinders, and though it was made to save gas, to drive it properly you have to make use of the turbo a lot....so the engine works harder and will probably wear out earlier, it won't save as much gas as they say, and used ones won't be worth much. Also, the CUV will probably hold up, but requires a lot of servicing which adds up. The reviewer said there are cars available that he thinks will hold up better. The Rogue looks good, but based on what he says, it makes sense to me. He'd choose a RAV4 or Subaru over the Rogue.

I just did a quick scroll. get ESPNs, FS1, the networks (golf, MLB, etc.) and an assortment of college conference networks. Not that I watch much of the stuff on them!

We've been using Comcast for 25+ years for our home phone, internet and cable TV. Price creep has made our monthly bill pretty expensive, and we're looking at options to replace it.

We've decided we don't use or need a home phone any further, so that's going away. There are some senior deals (55+) out there that look appealing, but I'm curious how everyone else consumes their viewing content.

Our daughter pays for AppleTV, Netflix, Prime, and one or two other streaming services, so I doubt we'd want to lose those.

We use Roku devices. An Ultra upstairs and a Streaming Stick downstairs. We use DirecTV primaily, but between my son and I we have most every streaming service available-- including F1 TV.

Hulu live TV. not the basic Hulu.

actually, my BIL (who has used streaming) said the same thing. The love Youtube TV and hate Hulu. I just got it because they are the only one that still carries SNY.

FS1(Big East) has some games but most are on SNY.

SNY offers a stand alone streaming option now (I think it is about $10/month). I only talked about it in terms of Mets games, but it may include all broadcasting.

I had a Rogue as a rental for about 10 days last year, and honestly couldn't tell you the difference between the 3-cyl engine it had and 4-cylinders from other makes. Quiet, decent power. Pretty comfortable inside.

The low financing is attracting a lot of attention.

I agree. Until someone here mentioned it I had no idea that the Rogues I drive at work were only 3 cylinders. We used to make fun of the Mitsubishi Mirage because it only had 3 cylinders but now I’m wondering why Mitsu didn’t throw a turbo on it and make a zippy little sports car out of it.

Today I got a “voluntary service campaign” notice from Kia. It seems the salt up here in the rust belt is causing the brake lines to corrode and fail. I have to admire Kia for stepping up since every brand has the same problem around here. It’s so common that when looking at car ads if it says “new brake lines” I know that the entire car is a rust bucket.

Anyway, they say they will inspect and replace the lines if necessary. In addition, they’ll put additional rustproofing on the undercarriage. When I bought the car I squirted WD40 and Fluid Film into the door bottoms and rocker panels but anything extra is welcome. I’ve only seen one Soul with body rust in my travels and that was on the rear panel where the body meets the rear bumper cover.

I researched the heck out of this awhile back.

As everyone stated, the most economical way is to have just internet with the cable provider (my internet actually includes Peacock streaming) and then YoutubeTV, Hulu live or Direct TV streaming. From there you can add Netflix or Max, etc. we actually rotate those out from time to time

If you have Walmart+ you get Paramount+. If you have Disney+ you can bundle Hulu (not live) for a few bucks a month. Sometimes cell phone providers offer discount or include streaming service too

Roku sticks are great too because there is a ton of free content channels. Samsung TV interfaces (as bad as they are) have basically the same free channels.

Oh - and as a litmus test my Mom has no issues navigating Roku and the streaming services

Right now we have
You Tube TV
Prime
Netflix
Paramount
Peacock
Disney w/Hulu

This is shared over five people and typically there is no problem finding something to watch. I love having the local stations and I can watch all the sports even at the shore

My sister's lease is up on her 2022 GLC300 4MATIC at the end of the month. She's picking up a Nissan Rogue Rock Creek today. If you are leasing, the Rogue has a good lease program that couples with a healthy discount. Apples to apples, the monthly payment (given all the same parameters of 15K per year & just 1st payment DAS) for a similarly equipped SUV is MUCH less.

It's not hard to find some clickbait-hungry YouTube artist thirsty for a hot take on something. I follow a lot of car review channels on YT and never heard of this guy so I would question his credibility. The RAV and the Subie are pretty much the two least appealing vehicles in this category to me. The RAV is noisy and doesn't drive great and in lower end trims has an awful interior to boot. The Subie drives a bit better but has its own issues for me. If you can save a lot on a Rogue and that's important to you I wouldn't hesitate to suggest it, especially if you are not someone who keeps a vehicle forever.

my daughter borrowed a Rogue recently on a family visit (in laws) and really liked it, and she was driving Mazdas at the time. If I needed a cheap lease for a mid sized CUV (say, had to get something for the wife) I would have no problem with a Rogue. I just would not buy it to keep long term.

Speaking of rust, when I was at the Acura dealer for service (I just wait, it's easier) I walked the lot. in the back corner they had the older used cars (maybe trades, no prices on them) and there was a pretty nice looking Blue Ford F150. 2014 FX4, with the cab and a half (suicide rear doors). Rockers and running boards looked ok from the outside. But I peeked into the rear wheel well and as inspected, everything I could see on the frame was crusty. Would need to get underneath to figure out how bad it is (invasive vs. surface) but that is pretty much normal for PUs around here even by just 10 years old. Which is quite sad.

A quick comparison of dealer service vs cost at Audi and VW. Both dealerships have provided good service, no complaints. Both provide similar accommodations in the waiting area, water, soda, a variety of crackers, chips, cookies. Service advisors, technicians are polite. I do a 5000 mi oil change instead of the 10000 mi interval. Both provide a similar video of a whole vehicle inspection and identify any thing needing attention. The cars are washed afterwards. About a month ago I took the Q5 to Audi for an oil change. $220.00. Today the Arteon received the same service at VW. $112.00. The Q5 and Arteon share a version of the E888 2.0 turbo engine. I’ve considered taking the Q5 to VW for service but VW can’t reset the maintenance light. Apparently that is proprietary between the two brands.

I used to take my Acura to the Honda dealer. Not sure if it was cheaper (but guess it might have been), but it was more convenient.

the oil change Friday on the RDX was IIRC $85. Maybe $89.99. actually less than Ford charges

@sda, according to someone on Reddit, you can reset the "service due" message via the MMI, but would need Ross-Tech or similar OBD software to reset the "inspection due" message. The cool thing about the specialized software is that you can sometimes unlock features that weren't available on USDM vehicles. I've done that on the Maverick, and it was well worth the price of admission.

HVAC inspection of the three non new systems was excellent.

Had an insulin pump die. Put on an Omnipod 5 which died when it started pumping. Second Omnipod 5 followed suite. Third OP5 came dislodged when I was working on HVAC and my sugar was soon 400+. Awkward.

Interesting week.

Being unable to reset the maintenance light is so underhanded. What if you got your oil changed at Jiffy Lube, would you have to run to the dealer to turn the light off?

Well, based on your review @ab348 if he buys the Rogue I won't comment on it...I hope he likes it. Personally, I wouldn't buy a 3 cylinder car, and I like his reasoning for avoiding it. It was a report by a Canadian guy but I think his points made sense to me. Some reviewers really like the new Mazda models, they might be worth checking out based on your opinion of the RAV4 and Subaru.

We got rid of cable 2 years ago. We have to pay for internet (a monopoly where we are) and we split streaming services with our kids. I think we have Apple+, Hulu, Disney+, Netflix and we just watch a lot of music on the free YouTube channel. We had Fubo for awhile but dropped it, I might pick it up again if that’s the only way to see the Open. We are locked out of so many Dodgers games that MLB isn’t really worth it. I think we get Peacock free too.

I do mine myself…sometimes with a little help from YT. Of course on some of my cars my maintenance reminder is my mechanic.

I guess I need to go to an independent. None are more convenient or close, alas.

I could see the VW mechanic not having the right equipment to do it, if they only work on VWs. But, almost every car has another way to reset it.

now I just need someone to figure out how to reset the auto up/down on my Acura. For some reason, just the driver's side window stopped working for that. The other 3, still just need a flick and go all the way up or down. Have to hold the driver's side now.

yes I know I can google too. Just have not had a chance. Probably though just a sign that I should have asked for that trade in offer on Friday when they offered it.

Press down and hold 5 seconds then press up and hold for 5 seconds. That tutorial made it seem like press down and release then down and hold but both should be press and hold.

Another post says press down and hold five seconds and then disconnect battery and press up and hold 5 seconds then reconnect battery

The auto up/down thing reminds of one minor gripe on my truck. It’s pretty well equipped but only the front windows have the auto up/down.

I only saw press til down then hold for 2 seconds. I guess can try holding longer. So far all the versions (car on or off, hold release and hold again) have been futile. Good thing my wife doesn’t care. She actually doesn’t like the auto down.

We went looking for a new sectional for the basement yesterday; we decided to pay a bit more and buy from a more upscale furniture store. We went in to buy today and saw a couch that had been custom ordered then returned. It was top quality and we ended up getting it for 60% off MSRP- OTD was even less than the sectional we saw at a more mass market dealer.
Now to reinstall the HTS speakers and electronics.

Funny. When I went to google about the window on the RDX & maintenance light on the Q5, it suggested I start shopping for a new car. Maybe AI is smarter than we think.

@sda - that’s annoying. Especially since the VW & Audi share a variation of the same engine.

I did try the 5 second hold. no go. I think there is something screwed up with that one window switch or regulator. the other 3 work fine. And being out of warranty, I am not paying the silly amount the dealer will likely charge to look at and/or fix it. Not really that important. Just treat it like an old beater I guess!
