How about identity theft? I think you were talking about somebody forging checks the other day. Well, I got a taste of that medicine yesterday when someone used my credit card to charge stuff in Florida. They did 8 sub one dollar charges at some sporting goods store and then the big one, a $1024 charge at a Marine supply shop in Tampa. Fortunately, the credit union fraud squad noticed and alerted me. The only problem is my card is frozen and it’ll take 7-10 days to get a new card. I’m guessing that I’m not responsible for any of the charges but I can’t contact the CU because they’re closed for Veterans Day.

First time this has happened in over 50 years of card use.
@oldfarmer50 Sorry to hear about that. I am in Florida but I don't know anything about your credit card, and I don't own a boat, Sea doo, mini boat or any kind of marine equipment.

    btw....that's not me!

Back on topic for this discussion on dishwashers - I have to admit I’m a bit disappointed in my Bosch 300-series after about 6 months of use. Yes, it is quieter than my old GE. It is probably more energy-efficient too. But I really don’t like how it loads. The two cutlery caddys are grey plastic things that had some shape deformation on day one. They have a grid thingy on top with rectangular slots for the handles to go into. The problem is that items move around while being washed and combined with some deformed plastic it is hard to get some of them out. My other gripe is the main rack for plates and bowls. The tines to hold them are angled and very close together. It is hard to figure out the best way to load the thing. Sometimes plates actually touch each other which prevents spray from getting to soiled surfaces. The old GE had a simpler, better design. Wasn’t expecting that from the reviews.

I do think the lower tray for the Bosch seems not that load efficient.

My Win10 and Win 11 computers have free security, Windows Security. It's part of the built-in operating system.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I don't know enough about it but my Computer Guy recommended it and installed it. According to AI;
AVG security provides a Windows 10 computer with real-time protection against viruses, ransomware, spyware, and other malware. It also blocks unsafe links, downloads, and email attachments, and includes features for identifying and addressing PC performance issues. Paid versions offer additional features like advanced Wi-Fi security, password protection, and network monitoring

You will never find the perfect dishwasher. Some have better features and some have worse features. The Bosch back home is quiet and works fine, I think the loading pattern is intelligent. The Maytag in Florida does a great job of cleaning, it is noisier, but my biggest complaint are the tines are really far apart - all of them, so small flat plates take up 2 or 3 times as much space as they have to.

I was telling a friend I can load 3 times as much into a dishwasher as MrsD100. Instead of fitting a bowl into the tines so it stands up she has it lie forward, so it covers 2 or 3 spots. Other things are put in all over the place with no plan.
My friend added, and it is also true in our case, I load it from the back so I can reach toward the back and work forward, both of our wives start loading from the front, making it harder to reach back to add more dishes.

There’s a meme floating around that is roughly that there are 2 kinds of people. Ones that load a DW like a Swedish IKEA designer, one ones that do it like a drunk hyena on meth. And they marry each other.

Once in a while my wife does some dishes while waiting for something to cook. I wait until she leaves the kitchen to reload the DW correctly.

And speaking of dishwashers, the new Kitchen Aid is currently undefeated in washing dishes. Really putting the Covid GE Profile to shame.

I’m sure I mentioned this before.

A little over a year ago we had to replace our 13 year old Samsung dishwasher that just stopped working one day. Off to the 2 big box places I went along with a mom and pop place. The guy at the mom and pop place suggested a specific Maytag model but he couldn’t get it for about a month. Lo and behold Lowe’s had that model so I got it there. About 2 appliances away from the Maytag was a Kitchen Aid. I bopped back and forth between the 2 comparing just about everything, tub, controls, layout, upper and lower racks, you name it, I compared the 2 of them. Turns out they were identical except that the Kitchen Aid was more upscale and had 2 more buttons. I have to believe that the control boards were the same too. Just had an additional connector or two wired out for the additional buttons. The Maytag was at least 500 bucks less. Those 2 dishwashers had to come off the same assembly line. I’m sure the Kitchen Aid commands more money because of the name.

FWIW, I installed our first dishwasher back in the early 70s. It was a Kitchen Aid and I was insistent about getting a Kitchen Aid because back then they were clearly the best. Had to replace the mechanical timer about a year before we moved in 1989. No telling how much longer that thing lasted. Today, there are several dishwasher brands that I’d consider.

    jmonroe
I steered her towards both Maytag and Whirlpool, using such logic (as they are all made by Whirlpool, supposedly KA is the top of the line, followed by Maytag and Whirlpool). They were similar.
    She wanted the KA.
And now you know the rest of the story.

    More from search:

Windows Security is a strong and effective antivirus for basic protection, often rivaling free third-party options in independent tests for core protection, performance, and usability. However, premium, third-party antivirus programs are better if you need advanced features like identity theft protection, comprehensive phishing defense, and more robust firewall capabilities. For most users who only need essential protection, Windows Security is a very capable choice.
    Windows Security strengths
Effective protection: It provides strong, real-time protection against viruses and malware, with independent tests often giving it perfect scores for protection, performance, and usability.
Minimal impact: It is designed to run efficiently, meaning it has a minimal impact on your computer's performance.
Built-in firewall: It includes a firewall that monitors network traffic, adding an extra layer of security.
Good for most users: It is a solid and sufficient choice for the average user who doesn't need specialized or extra security features.
    When third-party antivirus is better
Advanced features: Third-party software often offers more advanced features not included in Windows Security, such as identity theft protection, parental controls, and VPNs.
More comprehensive protection: Some paid programs can offer more robust protection against advanced threats, such as sophisticated exploit attacks, and may have more comprehensive network monitoring.
Cross-platform support: If you have devices other than Windows, like Macs, Android, or iOS, you may need a third-party solution to protect all your devices with a single product.

While I was pondering the post about my Bosch today, I found their online site and d/l’ed the user manual for mine. They have a section describing how to load it. I should take a picture of it and stick it to the wall. It is typically Germanic in that it seems it might only work properly if you load it the way they want it loaded, not the way it looks like it should be loaded according to owner Joe Schlub.

Speaking of stoves, my "dual fuel" Kenmore celebrated its twentieth anniversary last month.

I had to Google why dual fuel ranges exist. I didn't realize an electric oven supposedly gives more consistent temperature control, but what do I know? I've used my propane grill in place of an oven (not for baking bread or pastries), and the food turned out fine.

my wife was always adamant that we needed to have gas cooking. Which we always have. But in the new house, we got double ovens (actually a full sized (jumbo) wall oven, and a normal range instead of the usual cooktop). The range is gas, but the wall oven is electric. And ever since we moved in, that is almost all we use. I think we only really use the range oven at Thanksgiving when we need more capacity. Electric cooks really well.

I know there has been talk about a 'hybrid' range, but I'm not sure what path the girls are taking. I do know they are looking for one of those "split" ovens that allows two things to cook at different temps at the same time.

It's gotten to the point where we don't use the oven to bake, and instead use our combination toaster/oven, which has a much smaller capacity. Wife bought daughter a thick cook book that focuses solely on cookies, and I believe the new range is to support those recipes.

Our house has a gas cooktop but double wall ovens that are electric. At first I thought it odd, but we absolutely love those electric ovens.

Michael, the last house had a split compartment range oven. Cool idea since you can cook 2 things at the same time. Downside, can't cook anything really big (like a large turkey possibly). the top section was pretty short, but good for cookies I guess! Just not a lot of racks of them.

I am superior to Google with regard to that question (lol)! Electric ovens are VASTLY superior to gas, and the opposite is true for the range. Not only is it a matter of temperature consistency, but gas does have an odor to it (in the case of LNG, added for the benefit of detection), and I don't care how much people will claim the opposite, you *can* taste it in bread products, particularly those that are not heavily sweetened or spiced (such as loaf bread for sandwiches, etc., and perhaps even moreso in sourdough). For that reason alone, I would choose electric every time.

For ranges, though, the control, speed, and precision of gas cooking is unsurpassed. I hate cooking on electric elements. Even the induction ones are just not on par with gas.

However, there is very limited selection of dual fuel combo units out there, so my wife has decided that we will have a wall oven and cooktop range when we refinish the Conneaut house. Honestly, we will probably do the same in our main house, given the age of our current combo unit and the fact that we still haven't actually built our kitchen.... :D

I flew Cathay Pacific in a 747 from Kaohsiung in Taiwan to Hong Kong back in '89. It was only a short hop, but that was when the old airport (Kai Tak) was still very much in use; the banking approach over the city within a few hundred feet of buildings was very memorable. Good times.

Supposed to be good, this evening.. even in Cincinnati

Night before (Tuesday) was better. Still saw some last night, just not as pronounced as Tuesday.

Michael, the last house had a split compartment range oven. Cool idea since you can cook 2 things at the same time. Downside, can't cook anything really big (like a large turkey possibly). the top section was pretty short, but good for cookies I guess! Just not a lot of racks of them.

Wow, I’m impressed with the fancy cookware you rich guys have.

I’m just one step up from cooking on burning pallets in the back yard. When I replace my electric stove I got the cheapest I could find.
    What about air fryers?
ooooo...Boy! I probably use my air fryer more than I do my microwave. Most proteins come out really well. Steaks need a brief "broil" to get a crust. But, they still come out Medium Rare....just the way I like them.

    Chicken breasts? Juicy and tender.

    Reheating? Way. better than microwave.

When we look North, the city is in front of us. You can't see the actual skyline, but it makes it hard to see dark contrast.
