    When someone asks when I was born, I tell them When Eisenhower was running for re-election.
    That usually puts an end to that topic. :)

    So you'll be 70 this year?

    My pension started in 2016. It's fixed, no COLA.

    mine started at 60. Same thing. Fixed forever. Good thing the basis was good and I almost maxed out the years. A nice income floor.

    vacation prep underway. The nightmare of getting everything together and packing started yesterday and is thankfully done. If we forgot something may not even figure it out.

    and played rental car roulette this morning (we rent in Albany and will drop at Logan). Did OK at Hertz. An old man gray Altima. But it was brand new, only 519 miles on it. Active XM, and even as what seems base spec, it has BLIS. I assume it has car play but have not checked yet. Seats seemed comfortable. And on the 12 mile drive from the airport to the house, the trip computer says it did 44 MPG. That should make the drive out slightly more reasonable!

    My pension is eligible for a COLA when the stars align a certain way in the state budget, but I'm pretty confident that if that happened another excuse would be found to deny one.

    I know the firm I work for does not like to pay more than the midpoint of the pay range. If you can find another job with the same firm and assuming you like the firm, that’s positive. The risk of jumping firm to firm could jeopardize retirement savings if not vested, and the downside of beginning a new vesting period at the new firm. Other benefits should be considered as well.

    That really irks me... Why have a range if few people are going to make more than the midpoint? My current job has no issues hiring people at the top of the range, if they're qualified.

    I had been at my old job ten years and was fully vested in the 401k. PTO and other benefits were similar. The 401k at my new job had a six year vesting period (and it was worded in a super confusing way), but they did away with vesting in 2026 and everyone's employer match is fully earned, including on previous contributions. No pension at either job.

    My 401k vested after 6 years but just as I vested they switched to 4 years. By the time I retire the amount won’t be life changing but it will make a nice down payment on something.

    @kyfdx,
    It's age related. If you are working doesn't enter into it.
    I'm collecting Social Security only, but I will still have to take RMD's in about 3 years.
    That's a much bigger withdrawl than I want to or need to.

    I’m thinking of that 401K that you are still working for that company, and is still working there, and still contributing for that same 401K.

    You generally do not have to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from your current employer's 401(k) plan if you are still working there after age 73. This "still-working exception" allows you to delay RMDs from your current 401(k) until you retire, provided you do not own more than 5% of the company.

    @kyfdx,
    I found this explanation. Usual government overcomplication.
    When RMDs Begin
    For most 401(k) participants, the first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year after you turn 73. For subsequent years, RMDs are due by December 31 each year. If you are still working past age 73, you may delay RMDs from your current employer’s plan unless you own more than 5% of the business sponsoring the plan. Traditional IRAs, SEP IRAs, and SIMPLE IRAs do not allow this delay; RMDs must begin at age 73 regardless of employment status.

    Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes. Waiting for another test, not sure if it will happen today or tomorrow (hint: don't get sick on the weekend, hospitals have minimal staffing).

    Has anyone actually used Slime to seal a puncture in a tire? Is it worth it to keep a can in the trunk....with an air pump? One friend said he once tried to use it and the stuff shot all over. Some reviews say the gunk they use gets all over your wheel etc and can be a mess to try and clean up. What is the alternative if you get a flat, and your car has no spare? And how will AAA help you, if you have no spare? Questions, questions,....... :/
