I have a long scratch along the driver door of my accord se 2000. Some son of the [non-permissible content removed] keyed it for some reason I will never know when I parked my car in a shopping center.
The scratch is very thin but relatively deep. Thanks god it doesnot touch the metal so it won't cause any corrosion. I have tried G24 but it did not help much. Any body here have experience to deal with this kind of scratch ? Thanks in advance for any info
I had them replaced on my 98 sedan at 30K miles. Was suprised they needed to be done. Someone (Auburn63 I believe) has confirmed before that rear pads are thinner than the fronts and 30K is not uncommon.
Many cars with ABS will make a short 'chuckling' or 'muted clicking' noise after reversing then starting forward. It lasts for just a second or less. It's some kind of 'setting' or 'testing' the ABS system does.
Several of my cars with ABS have made this noise. Ford, Cadillac, etc.
Some people are getting carryed away saying this is a transmission problem.
The V6 transmission problem I've heard about only involved several months production of 2000 Year Model Accords.
My experience with the kind of damage you describe, I'm sorry to say, means you will have to take it to a professional. I tried everything and every product, and in the end, repainting was the only thing that got results that looked like new. [The car was a '92 Sable and the color was a rich blue-gray clearcoat...key damage was about 2 feet long in total, over two panels.]
All claims to the contrary, there is no product that is going to replace paint like paint...if the cut is deep enough to have gone below the color coat [even if it didn't get to the metal], then paint is the only solution that will make it look like new.
I would think any Honda dealer can sell the Honda extendacare warranty, but some may not really want to. Shop all the Honda dealers in your area because they all charge different prices. As a disincentive for the customer to purchase it they may try and charge some outrageous price. And be aware there are different plans within the extendacare line. You should be able to buy it anytime before the original 36mo/36kmi manuafacture warranty expires. And if you get it before 24mo/24k there is no surcharge(which is @ 60.00). It makes sense that Autonation can't sell the Honda warranty, but that doesn't mean you can't get it.
hai_from_va: Although I agree that repainting is the ultimate answer, you might try some touch up paint first. Your dealer can supply the correct color paint. Even though the scratch didn't reach the metal, you will have to clean it out. A few strokes with a women's nail file should do the trick. Then use a tooth pick dipped in the paint to apply the paint to the scratch. Use multiple coats. Don't try to fill the scratch hole on the first coat - just coat the inside of the scratch. Then build up the paint with multiple tiny coats until the new paint fills in the scratch to the level of the original paint. Not totally perfect but not noticable by most folks.
bolivar: The clicking noise is the ABS applying your brakes in small increments so as not to allow your tires to loose traction and start a skid. And that brings up my problem. Although I never gone into a complete "panic" braking situation, I have (in near panic situations) applied a lot of braking pressure - short of a skid by what I consider microscopic amounts. But I didn't get that clicking effect. My dealer says the ABS system checks out correctly. Via their computer no doubt. But I'm still not sure that the ABS system is working. Any ideas?
I've noticed on the 4 cylinder 2001 Accords (2 or 4 door) in the SF Bay area (even brand new!) that if you look underneath from the back of the car that a) the round bar that welds to the back left of the muffler is rusted, and b) if you look further forward (in the middle in line with the back tires) there are two vertically aligned bolts and the bottom one is rusted as is the bar attached to it.
My questions are:
1. Is this only for 2001 4 cylinder Accords in the Bay Area? (Owner's can you take a look and let us all know about your vehicle?) 2. Is this normal? (Doesn't seem like it!) 3. Is it cosmetic?
I have a '99 Accord EX. Has anyone heard of a mfgr defect w/respect to the driver's side door hinge (or anything like that) which might cause a collision-like indentation in the panel immediately in front of the door (over the tire)?
Several months ago, I came down to my car in the garage and was barely able to open the driver's side door. I saw what appeared to be an indentation from somebody hitting me---it hadn't been there when I parked there in the morning. The strange thing was that my car was parked in a location where it did not seem possible that someone could have hit me in that spot.
Just recently, a friend of mine smashed into a pole pulling his car out of a parking spot, causing damage to approximately the same location as my mystery indentation. When I saw his damage, however, something jumped out at me---his spot was banged and bruised with chipped paint, black streaks and the other markings typical of impact. It struck me then for the first time that my indentation was completely smooth--no marks whatsoever.
One final point: Over the last few months, I've noticed a number of Honda Accords (around the same model year as mine) with indentations in the same spot as mine. I assume this was a coincidence (maybe it's a common spot for collisions?), but now I'm not so sure....
Could another car have struck my car without leaving any marks other than a smooth indendation? Has anybody heard of a defect involving the door hinge, or something like that?
What I said was - Several cars I've owned with ABS made a small noise just after being started. ALL THE TIME!!!!
You get in the car. You start it. You back up. You start moving forward. You hear a muted, clicking noise. THIS IS NORMAL. It is the ABS, and is NOT a transmission noise.
And yes, I know what the ABS sounds and feels like through the brake peddle when you actually activate the ABS with heavy braking. I was NOT talking about these noises and/or pulses....
I was recently rear ended and my '95 LX Accord was totalled. The entire trunk area was demolished. Basically, the car now starts with the rear seats. The drivers' seatback and front passengers' seatback both flew into the lying down position - the headrests now touch the back of the backseat. We are trying to find out if this is some kind of safety feature (hard to believe with a rear collision) or rather some sort of defect. Any insight or knowledge about this would be greatly appreciated.
Front and rear crumple zones are designed to absorb impact and minimize energy transfer to the passenger compartment in a collision. If the rear of your car had remained rigid, you probably would have suffered significant whiplash injury.
Getting a slight weird sound (like a helicopter!) when I get my 2001 EX 4cyl. up to say 40 mph. or higher...and then let up off the gas. Service manager changed two front bearings, same thing. Then, he takes me out on his own EX 4 cyl and we both hear the same thing again! He explained that the tire size and its contact with the road produces the sound and that it was normal. He also mentioned that theLX model was quieter because they have 70 series tires (not as wide) vs. the 60 series on the EX. Has anyone else experienced this road noise and if so...is it normal? Is it caused by the "wide tire contact" with the road? All answers appreciated. Many thanks!
I just purchased an '01 Accord V6 Ex. I've noticed a lot of discussion regarding automatic transmission problems. I hate to bring up the subject again but I've looked at all the msg's and can't find anything specific.
I've noticed while backing up, if I get up to approximately 10 mph then release the gas pedal, I hear a metal clanking sound and the car kind of shutters.
This is not normal right? Is this the start of the transmission problem discussed on this board?
I have a 2000 EX V-6 that was affected by the transmission clunk. Your description sounds somewhat similar... the only difference is that I didn't have to release the gas pedal to get the noise to occur... it would happen while I was stepping on the gas pedal to back up.
If the noise you're experiencing doesn't happen *without* releasing the gas pedal, then I think it's a different situation. I can't really speculate as to whether or not it's a problem. To my knowledge, the "clunk" problem affected only a small production run of MY2000 V-6's, and shouldn't be found in any MY2001 Accords.
pvlevine: I thought maybe you lived in Florida or Loisiana or somewhere it never gets cold. You've never tried your ABS on a snow-covered parking lot or deserted street? You should do it just to see what it feels like, so you won't be surprised in a real panic situation.
I recently purchased a 2000 Accord V4, and some jerk bumped it in my company parking lot. Although its 1/2 inch long, the paint has come off and I can see the metal.
How long does it take to rust? Can I fix it myself by just touching up over it or should I take it to a body shop?
I have a 2000 Accord V-6 coupe, and I am getting a usual 21mpg. My driving consists of 30 miles to and from work on mostly highway, and say about 10 miles of back and forth city driving during the day before I go home on the 30 mile trip with about 3 stops. I used to get a non consistent 21-24mpg, but lately I'm getting 21 and it's kinda pissing me off. Could there anything wrong with the car? The specs say I should be getting 20city 28 highway, and my driving is 80% highway. Any similar experiences?
It has been an ongoing problem in a high number of V-6 Accords since 1998. It is not an isolated problem and is the first "warning" regarding transmission failure. Take it into Honda service and tell them of the problem. They know all about it and have a technical service bulletin on the subject. You can also do a search at http://www.Honda-Acura.net
2kaccord: you don't say how many miles are on your car, but maybe it needs a new air filter or the timing adjusted. Is your tire pressure low?
I have a V6 accord and generally get between 23 and 28 mpg; I average probably 26 mpg. I can't remember ever getting under 23. But I've never done much bumper-to-bumper or stoplight to stoplight city driving. Maybe the 10 miles of city driving is enough to bring your average down.
I agree with TimAdams, I pretty much always get over 25 with it pushing toward 28 with my 99 V6 couple. My RL on the other hand is down in the 21 range.
I do drive pretty evenly with very little stop and start.
A friend was told by the honda dealer the AC filter on his 2K Prelude must be changed as part of the regular maintenance.
What kind of a filter is this-does Honda now have a filter for outside air before it goes into the AC/Heating system. News to me-or is this a dealer scam.
I would personally like to have the outside air filtered before it comes into the vehicle.
My 98 Accord EX has 2 AC filters which need to be changed. The trap pollen and dust. I had them done at one dealer at 15K. Another dealer at 30K said, Naw don't bother with those.
My car has about 17,700 miles. I haven't yet changed the air filter, but I inspected it about 5k ago and it appeared as new. I was thinking of installing a K&N filter. I just filled the tires to about 35psi all around and still 21mpg. It makes me sick that you're getting in the mid to high 20's. I'll try the filter, and if not, I guess I'll just swallow the 21mpg?!!! Thanks
I have an 01 Accord EX v6, the owners manual says all Accords need 5W-20 oil. I called the dealer about my first oil change and they said they use 5w-30. When I replied the owners manual says 5w-20, he said they have that and it would be $5 more.
My question, are the really going to put 5W-20 in the car? Is it bad for the engine if they put 5w-30?
Also, the owners manual says you need a special tool to remove the oil filter. Is that true
No special tool is needed. Just get the right oil filter socket at any auto supply shop. Take along a honda filter so you get the right size. Turn the wheel all the way to the right and there's the filter. Save 10.00 doing it your self. Keep an eye out for all the other problems tht may surface...ie. hard starting, fuel gauge problems, cosmetic defects, etc. Hope you have a good service dept.
isellhondas sells Hondas for a living and is in constant denial regarding the V-6 transmission problems. They happen, you can read about them right here or go to the NHSTA and look at all the complaints. There has been an alarming number of V-6 transmission failures from 1998-2001. It is not an isolated problem. Honda has worked feverishly to correct the problem but without the results they would like. A "Clunk" from a new transmission is not normal especially when it leads to future problems or possible failure. isellhondas, I would suggest you take your "rose colored glasses" off and find out what is happening in the real world regarding the V-6 transmission.
Does anybody else have a noisy accord? Purchased a 2001 exv-6 in Jan.
Following things have developed.
1. Tire went flat- Hole in aluminium wheel, dealer fixed , no problem
2. Wind noise/whistle from drivers outside mirror. Dealer wasn't able to fix. I fixed it by placing electrical tape over the front part of mirror housing seam.
3. Squeak from drivers seat from the back lumbar area.(very bothersome)
4. Vibration from the rear passenger area. I think the door panel is a little loose.
5. Starting to get a intermentent creak from the dashboard.
I think the accordv6 ex is a very fine car. Drives like a dream. But all these darn little problems are taking the joy out owning it. I plan on getting these things fixed on my 6 month oil change. Anybody else have these types of troubles.
marayanan: About that scratch, cover it with wax to prevent any rust. When next at your dealer, buy some touch-up paint of the same color, remove the wax, and touch up the scratch.
robr: When you say 2 AC filters, do you mean 2 filters for the A/C in addition to the primary air filter for the engine? Or do you mean a total of 2 filters?
2kaccardv6: Something ain't right! I've got the '98 EX V6 Coupe and I'm getting about 27mpg on my daily 30 miles in each direction commute. My mileage improved over time, but still, my commute include primarily highway driving but with a significant amount of stop and go traffic jams. It could be the air filter or any of a number of other causes: Timing, belts, too much A/C drag, bad spark plug, tranny linkage, etc. The dealership "should" have a method for tracing this problem.
Regarding Post#1233, I have same wind nose problem about 40 to 60 miles drive on My Accord V6-ex. Please inform me more detail what part of mirror housing did you put on electrical tape to solve Nose Problem?
It is a pain to change the A/C filters. In the 2001 Civics, it's a DIY job but I would leave the Accords to the dealer. It's not necessary to cut anything but it's not easy.
On my '98 Accord, I had them changed at 35,000 miles. They were just FILTHY! Guess they must work pretty well!
The side mirrors can make a wind noise. Honda solved the problem in 98 by making the mirrors non breakaway. People complained and breakaway mirrors came back the next year.
The wind noise isn't THAT bad but I know some people are sensitive to every little noise.
I only do a modest amount of maintenance (myself), but I went ahead and changed the A/C filters on '99 Accord. It wasn't that hard although I wish it was designed to change easier. I will probably continue to change from here on out. I had about 32 C and like sell says - mine were ready to change too. I used the Haynes manual - it was pretty good in identifying the needed steps. No cuts' needed but do need to pull glove box and also lower dash panel. I did not disable SIRS - does anyone know if this is important to do? Or just something the maintenance manuals include to cover their liability? Anyway, I think it must of took 30 minutes. Not too bad! No special tools needed! For what my dealer charges I think this is a job I'll continue every 30K miles.
I put the tape on the front part of the mirror casing, over the seam where you can colapse it. So if you colapse it, the tape peals off some. It took care of the wind nosie. Funny thing is there isn't any wind noise/whistle from the passenger side mirror. My noise starts out about 25-30 m.p.h.
I have a 2001 Accord LX V6 I got last month. I already have 2000 miles on it and I noticed the wind noise driving home from the dealership. It only occurs on the driver side when going over 30 mph. The only other complaint I have about the car is there are several bubbles in the paint (maybe 4 or 5) in various locations. They are extremely small and not very noticeable unless you are a perfectionist like me. Wouldn't these be covered under the rust/perforation warranty?
Regarding the post#1239, Thanks to Extell for more detail information however, Still I did not fully understand the electrical tape over the mirror edege between housing and mirror?. Can You post a picture for the tape installation? Your prompt response will be highly appreciated.
My '98 Accord Coupe also has some wind noise even with the 'breakaway' mirrors. I think most of it is from the tires; MXNoisy. Also, the air hitting the lower open wheel compartment and rubber splash guards must make some additional noise.
I recently bought a 96 Accord EX, automatic with 57K miles on it and in near perfect condition. After doing the 60K mile servicing, I went on a 1K trip, and soon after that I noticed that the engine was running not as quite and smooth as it was before the trip. Also, when accelerating from the 3rd to the 4th gear, I get a ‘hollow’ or an ‘echoiee’ sound rather than the ‘crisp’ pickup feel I used to get. It doesn’t seem to be anything major, but I do love my Accord and want to keep it in a great condition. Can anyone have a educated guess as to what might be wrong, so that I can go to a service center with some informed background on the problem. Thx in advance.

I recently bought a 2001 Honda Accord EX sedan. This car has had nothing but problems since I bought it. I have replaced the ABS control module and now there is a rattle eminating from the dash during acceleration and deceleration. I have taken it into the dealership several times, and they believe it is a transmission problem. The transmission shifts fine though, being a 5 speed manual. This car has less than 3000 miles on it. Has anyone had this problem with a previous Honda and if so, what was it? Thanks.
Hi guys: I had a used Mazda 626 and I am finally selling it off and buying a new Accord Ex V6. Are there are dealers in Northern Virginia who can sell me this car below invoice price of 22,375 And what are the other costs involved and how much are they ??? for eg, tax, tags, title, processing, destination ??? How can I save some money...Also is it good to get Extended warranty ??? How much out of the door price am I a looking at ??
I have an appointment with the FairFax Honda on Friday. Please advise. Harry
Transmissions don't generally "rattle". Have they checked all the heat shields and the exhaust system? From your description of it being during accel and decel that is where I would start.
I also have an Accord 2001 EX V.6 that I bought 3 months ago and now the paint is chipping up in several places. They are also extremely small zit-like bubbles(as #1240 pointed out). Could it be a poor paint job some sort of erotion below the paint? The car is still under the 1YR dealer warranty.
Hope someone here can help me identify the problem. I drive a 99 Accord and since that time I've been hearing a strange clicking sound under the hood near the Auto Tarns. The sound goes all the way to the driver side muffler where the airflow is in multiple spurts. I check under the car near the catalytic converter and the sound seems to come from there as well. Still I'm not sure because the sound is louver near the Auto Tarns. Every time I go to the dealer the sound amazingly disappears and I end up paying an inspection fee for a complete check up that does not resolve the problem.

Listen to Auburn63..He is a Honda TECHNICIAN !!
This is yesterday's news.
Now...will EVERY Honda transmission last 200,000 miles?? Of course not! There will always be some kind of failure rate for anything mechanical.
Just compare that failure rate to most other cars.
