With regards to the "Headlight Dimming Issue", is it possible, that the original equipment battery, does not have the "reserve power" to handle HIGH ELECTRICAL DEMANDS, and this is seen as a headlight dimming problem at night? With the engine running, the battery acts as a stabilizer in the electrical circuits. If this is the problem, a "Heavy Duty Battery" could be the solution! A "Heavy Duty Battery" would have more capacity under load, and as such, there would be less load on the alternator!
I posted few message my car sometime ago. The car now has run 23K miles. I still have the engine knocking problem. I talked to dealer technician, he did a test drive and admitted there was a problem, and said he needed to talk to Honda about it. But he never called me back. The problem occurs when car acclerates to 20-50 mph, engin knocks. Any one has similar experience, please post. I said I would write to Honda about this last time, I think this time I really need to write to them complaining about the problem.
The car also has the transmission recall done. One thing I am not sure that the dealer did not change the tranny oil -- How can they inspect the 2nd gear without opening the tranny?!.
The car also does not very stable when it is hit my sidewind, any experience on this, also pelase post. Thank you all.
Hi! I have a little problem with my Accord 99 EX 4 cyl A/C Panel. Sometimes all the A/C Panel lights turns off and the compressor stop working, but the blower still running. The defroster doesnt work when it happens. May be someone can help me out. Thanks!
The engine knock could be anything but it can be isolated and detected. The problem may be the service at the dealer that you are using. It is worth the time to look for a dealer service elsewhere to have your problem corrected.
In reference to your transmission question, this is the information from the recall notice: ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MAY 12, 2004. OWNER NOTIFICATION FOR THE ACCORD AND ACURA MODELS WILL BEGIN ON JULY 26, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
The sidewind issue is dependent on too many things to answer. Hope the other information was helpful
They're 2 different symptoms, with knocking indicating worn internal parts typical of high-mileage/marginally maintained engines and pinging suggesting bad gas, computer malfunction or both.
Since you're just at 23k miles, the second, less serious condition is more likely. Either case, it'll be free warranty work for you.
Re your tranny, if I remember correctly they snake an optic-fiber device through a second, non-drain hole to inspect the 2nd gear; they then replace the plug with the oil jet kit. This procedure does not entail a tranny disassembly or a fluid change.
I have a 2003 Honda Accord V6 with about 31,000 miles on it. I keep it outside; as opposed to in a garage or car port. The car has dual climate controls inside. Lately, whenever we turn the temperature down we get a weird smell coming from the vents. It's not foul-smelling (at least not yet) but it is an odd, plastic smell. It only lasts for about 2 minutes or so then we no longer smell anything. I've heard stories of mold growing inside the vents whenever running the A/C but we live in the Northeast and we've probably only ran the A/C a dozen or so times in the last year. If anything, we run the heat on high then cut it back whenever it gets too hot. It's then when we cut it back that we smell the odd smell.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this odor? Is there any way I can clean my car's vents (I'm not very automotive-inclined) or check out the problem? Is this something I can take to the garage and have them solve/fix? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Can you describe the engine knocking sound? My car makes a clicking sound when I accelerate slowly and step on the gas a little harder once in 2nd gear and stay there.
My 2002 Accord LX has just over 36,000 miles, the automatic transmission is leaking and needs to be replaced by the dealer. They say they will do it under warranty but I don't think this will give me confidence about having a remanufactured transmission in my car ( I doubt if they will give me a new one). I am stunned by having a Honda crap out on me this soon but I see I am not the only one with this problem for the past 7 year models. I traded my 2001 Civic for this car because the Civic had so many problems with the suspension and interior fit & finish and I wanted a car that had the bugs worked out of it. I avoided the 2003 Accord which turned out to be a good idea! Now the car I planned to keep for 100,000 plus miles apparently has a genetic flaw that the engineers at Honda haven't cured after four years (1998 to 2002) of making this version. I don't think I will keep this car but hate to lose money like I did when I traded the Civic. I think Honda needs to do some soul searching because an automobile is a very expensive piece of landscape in the front yard if the transmission doesn't reliably transmit the motion.
The remanufactured would likely be better anyway. Think about it. If they have new, it's the same as in your car already. From experience I know that some two year old cars are better than the new ones. The first owner has suffered through fixing all the problems.
It seems that when some people hear that they're getting a remanufactured transmission, they think "rebuilt". There's a big difference between remanufactured and rebuilt. A rebuilt transmission is a failed transmission that has the failed parts replaced, retaining any original parts that didn't fail. A remanufactured transmission uses all new parts for the mechanicals, reusing ONLY the transmission housing. They do this because the housing is a very expensive piece and isn't involved in the failure of the original transmission.
So mechanically, a remanufactured transmission is every bit as good as a new transmission.
I was making no editorial comment regarding the need to replace the transmission. I was just trying to clear up the confusion between "rebuilt" and "remanufactured" transmissions.
FYI, I have had engine pinging in my 2004 Odyssey since it was new (12K miles). I can only stop it by using at least mid-grade fuel. I asked the dealer to check it. The checked the timing & said it was okay. Since I had mid-grade fuel in it, they couldn't hear the pinging & didn't seem to believe it. If I remember correctly, the Odyssey V6 has a 10:1 compression ratio, which I consider high for regular unleaded fuel. Since the Odyssey V6 is similar to your Accord, I thought you might be interested.
I don't know it it's "ridiculous" but I agree, it shouldn't happen. Still.." stuff happens" even to the very best of cars. Once it's replaced it's doubtful there will be further troubles.
There's a TSB for Accord V6 models for 2003 and 2004 regarding pinging:
Service Bulletin 04-050
Engine Spark Knock on Acceleration
SYMPTOM The engine has a spark knock (ping) during acceleration.
PROBABLE CAUSE The programmed ignition timing is too advanced during specific engine operating conditions.
CORRECTIVE ACTION Update the PCM software using the Honda Interface Module (HIM).
I don't have access to Odyssey TSBs, but perhaps there's a similar TSB for them. The fact that it has happened with Accords despite the knock sensors shows that they have to be properly programmed to prevent knock.
I have a 2K Accord V6. I have noticed even after alignments that the tires on one side(driver side) wear faster than the other side. If the alignment is fine on the car, what else could be the problem?
This may be a long shot, but since it does not cost anything, is easy to do and it can't hurt you may want to give it a shot.
If you disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and wait five to ten minutes the electronic control unit should lose its memory. Once the battery cable is reattached and you run the car for a while the ECU will learn the new settings. This may resolve the pinging issue. One caution, have the anti-theft radio code available because you will have to enter it in order to your radio to work again.
I have 04 ex accord with leather and navi. Bought it six months ago and now having problems with the sunroof. Squeaky Noise. Took it to dealer for service but noise is still there. Any suggestions? Thought of trading it with 04 TL but the difference is 10K+.
Who or where can I go to get the radio code that belongs to my car. I have a '95 Honda Accord EX. I bought it in '97. Dealer is an idiot. He could not provide a manual, extra keys, and did not know how to operate the keyless entry/security system. I called dealer in Waco, TX. He did not know there even was a radio code. Please give me some direction. jburgezz@cox.net Thanks in advance. Jerry Burgess
I agree, the rattles are the only problem that has kept me from enjoying my 2003 LX Accord. I too have considered trading it, which is a very big decision for me. I finally got the dealer to keep it overnight as the rattles are more apparent with the first drive of the morning. I had told them the biggest rattle was under the right portion of the passenger front airbag. They took that area apart & insulated it. It’s much better now, so I’ll ask them to look in the front passenger door at my next visit. It sounds like the window frame is touching something near the top of the door panel. If I crack the window, the rattle is reduced, sometimes completely. Good luck to all!
I had serious paint defects on my 2004 accord EX which American Honda replaced with a 2005 EX, same color. Now 2005 is starting to show the same kind of defects. Large, dark circles under the white paint and clear coat. On 2004 it took 3 months before thew were noticeable, but turned up all over the car's exterior. So far, have had the 05 one month, now see three different areas where the dark circles are appearing on this car. Any paint problems similar to this one out there.

Of course, you and others will think exactly that. I am extremely careful with my car, it is parked in my home garage when not in use. And, no there is nothing dripping in my garage!! Other new cars have been parked there and never a problem like this. I believe Honda has a paint problem that they are not yet aware of -- I also am sure there are other white cars out there with the same defect. If you are not a car fanatic, one who keeps the car clean -- you might not even notice until the blemishes become extremely apparent.
Of course, you and others will think exactly that.
Actually, no. But I've know of incidents on Long Island where new cars (because the paint hasn't sufficiently hardened) parked in certain areas have been suceptable to environmental paint damage.
Parking new cars near dieseal RR trains, salt or asphalt plants (among other things) have come up with paint damage.
My car is parked in a school parking lot, there are no environmental problems in this area. If there were, I would not be the only car with this problem. Also, I think American Honda would have suggested some wrong doing on my part rather than replacing the car for me. I think it would have been wise if they investigated the problem with the 04' instead of just putting it up for auction after I turned it in to them. THey knew it was something really wierd and unexplainable.
I am writing here to see if I can find anyone else who has had the same problem. There has to be others out there, maybe only shows up on the Tafetta White.
There is a code number on the back of the radio that your Honda dealer will need. That number can be called in for your code.
Be sure you write that code number down and keep it in a safe place. As far as I'm concerned the codes are almost more trouble sometimes than they are worth. I know they have dramatically reduced the theft of these since the thief knows the radio will be useless.
In addition to writing down and saving the radio code, you can enter it on your page at the Honda "Owner Link" web site. You can also keep your service record there.....Richard
Yes, It was recomended that I call my dealer. He doesnt have a clue and was surprised to hear there was a code. He recomended I look on the bottom of the ash tray.... I found nothing there.
My wife drives a 2002 CRV-EX that is Taffeta White and it looks wonderful. I am a fanatic about a clean car. This car has been washed at least weekly for over two years and I use Klasse AIO and Klasse Sealant Glaze to protect the paint.
Your problem seems very strange. I agree that if Honda replaced your vehicle that there is indeed a real problem. Since you have had two vehicles with the same problem I wonder if the dealer is somehow ruining the paint with some sort of prep work on the cars. Personally I have never seen this on any Honda.
I would take it to a reputable body shop or a good detailer (the kind of professional that knows how to use a rotary buffer to repair swirls, scratches, and other paint defects - not one that just slaps on a coat of wax) and get their opinion.
I took the 2004 to a extremely reputable body repair shop who I know, before I went back to Honda. He had never seen anything like this before and could not explain it. THe discolorations are actually underneath the paint. If you look at the areas straight on--you see nothing. You have to look at an angle, in direct sunlight or darkness while under a streetlight, which is how I noticed the two areas on the new 05'. On the 04' it took 3 months before you actually saw anything, which leads me to believe this problem will become more apparent in the next few months. After the 3 months, the areas got larger, darker and increased in number. I think there is a problem with the undercoating or primer used before the car is painted.
Thanks for the info! Good to hear from someone who doesn't think it's something I am doing!!
I am trying to locate detailed TSB info about a fix on rattles/clicking sound orignated from center console and passenger side (front&back) armrest/handle. For the center console, I do recall someone posted the TSB detail on this board years ago (probably from auburn)...about a screw needed to be tighten behind the console. Unfortunately, I can no longer find the post (probably has something to with Edmunds being redesigned)... Tried searching various sites but no luck... If someone recall the post or the fix, please let me know. My apology for the intrusion and thank you.
I got my engine code from Auto Zone today. P 0420, something about the catalytic converter. What's the deal with this? I've got an appointment with the dealer next week. Sounds like something that needs to be taken care of soon? Thanks, Greg
I bought a new 2004 lx accord one month ago from the honda dealer. The mileage info on the car sticker said 24 city miles/gal and 34 highway. I am driving both in a mix of city and highway roads. The car has performed at 16.9 miles/gal on the first two tanks of fuel. I am higly disapointed. I would like to get my money back. The airbag lights also turns on on the dashboard indicating an airbag problem. I can't believe i bought this car.
What's your driving style? If you're going a couple of miles in the city and shutting the engine off following many short trips, any car will run inefficiently and use more fuel while warming up multiple times.
A new 4 cyl. Accord with AT should get about 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Many Accord owners do better than that.
Are you being exact in calculating mileage and not just estimating from the gauge needle?.....Richard
I have no idea what you are talking about. Two different cars? I'm around a LOT of Hondas new and used and we have a 2003 white CRV and the paint is flawless.
isellhondas: What's your point? Just because your car's paint is "flawless" doesn't mean that a paint problem in one or two cars deserves to be disregarded.
Since the poster has not one, but TWO cars affected by this it almost seems like "something" is causing this to happen. I don't mean something the owner is doing but, perhaps some kind of chemical fallout or something?
My point was/is...from my vantage point I see a lot of cars and I hear about it when there are problems. This is the first I've heard of this and I have no explaination as to what's causing it. Nothing that's widespread so far as I know.
My wife's 2004 Accord EX V6 has a slight clattering/clanging sound whenever the car goes over bumps or road imperfections. It's much more audible from the back seat, and seems to be coming from under the car toward the rear. Any idea what it is? Anyone else with the same problem?
"My wife's 2004 Accord EX V6 has a slight clattering/clanging sound whenever the car goes over bumps or road imperfections. It's much more audible from the back seat"
My 2002 Accord V6 EX at 25,500 miles got the same sound in the back of driver seat when I went over bump or sharped turn. I am going to take it to the dealer this Tuesday. Also, at 15,500 miles the oil leaked underneath the engine. But that oil leak problem has been fixed under warranty. I hope the problem with the driver seat is going to be fixed under warranty too even though the car was bought a little bit over 3 years old, but it is only 26,500 miles.
I just bought new accord. Car is a nice drive...though gas mileage could be better. I expect that will improve some after a few miles. However dash creeks or clicks from drivers side dash when goes over bumps. Very annoying... anybody else have this problem? If so, what was the solution?
I know i am an efficient driver when it comes to mileage. I had better than standard mileage with my previous car. I am driving on fairly large roads and highways, no downtown stop/start driving. I calculated the mileage by filling the tank to maximum and driving until the tank is empty. ok i have not read the fuel volume on the pump so i am not exact but with 16.9 miles/gal, instead of 24 (printed on the car MSRP sticker, and not 22!) you have to question Honda's advertised mileage. I went to the dealer saturday they could not care less, told me they would look at the car on monday while they were working on other cars. You can guess what i think of Honda, this is the first (and last) car i buy from them.
