The Super Charger would really help the GT-S(auto) in low end power, which the Celica lacks(besides another gear). I recently met a guy at my school who has a GT-S automatic. It's slow getting to 60, but it can come out of corners ALMOST as fast my six speed.

RMM's intake is already out and their exhaust system may be out. I hear the exhaust system is pretty pricey though. RMM is quoting some pretty impressive HP gains but I'm not sure how much I trust their ratings.

I've also heard some rumors of a S/C system being developed but I don't know how the high compression issue with the GTS will be resolved. I also don't know if the rumors are for a roots-type blower or centrifugal. As far as a turbo goes - I think the underhood plumbing for this type of install would be a nightmare. Just my .02 8^)

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try get the intake this weekend. I studied the engine bay of my car and you're right the plumbing from a turbo and a intercooler would be all over place, but I'm sure some people will still try. Since I have a six speed, do you think torque steer is going to be a problem with the S/C. Because my friend has a '98 Prelude non-SH with the Jackson S/C and he has a problem with torque steer. Could it be the larger displacement of his engine?

what kind of tires and rim are you getting for the snow ..did you have the 15 or the 16.

I bought a 95 celica GT with 60,000 miles, besides the radio antenna going out no problem. The warrenty on the car is about up - I'm wondering how long do celica's last? Do they require a lot of repairs? should I try to get rid of it and get something newer or do these cars last a while? One more question how do they do on long road trips?
    my email is acriss@lsumc.edu thanks.

As far as Toyota, their reliability is supposedly bulletproof. They last for 200K easily from what I hear. My friend and I share a 2000 Celica GT (our first Toyota), so I can not personally verify the lasting thing yet. Consumer Reports does say that Toyota and Honda are the two most reliable cars on the market.

Well, I've been shopping around for an SUV, armed with all my research from Edmunds, Consumer Reports, etc. Had it logically narrowed down to a few reliable, trusty SUV's...when the 2000 Toyota Celica GTS caught my breath, & I succumbed to new car fever! I know absolutely nothing about the Celicas, but know the excellent history of Toyotas. I can't find safety info on these cars & am wondering if anyone can shed any light on it? I also (like #113) live in a snowy area (Colorado) & am wondering how well they do in snowy/icy conditions (which is why I was looking for an SUV in the 1st place). I'm an almost 40 year old grand mother & am amazed at how I feel about this car! Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! :-)

I don't know about the new celicas but I have owned a '91 celica for 7 years now and have had hardly any problems with it. I have 94,000+ miles on it and the only thing to go wrong are minor problems (broken antenna, dead battery, toe wear on front tires (alignment problem), and broken trunk hinge spring). I live in Indiana and the car is a little problem in snow. There is little clearance under the car so I think if the new celica sits as low as mine, you'd have problems there in CO. Lucky for me we don't get a whole lot of snow and the roads are usually paved when I drive. One thing I love about my car though is the gas mileage. I drive 80 miles round trip for work and my car gets between 32 to 35 miles to the gallon mostly highway driving. As for safety, my car has a driver's side airbag but other than that I think that if I got into an accident, well...I don't want to think about that in my car. I love the new celicas also (which is the reason why I'm here) and am thinking about buying one soon. I'm not as concerned about the speed and acceleration as others are, just like the looks (and I'm sure the cops will notice too). Gas mileage is very important to me with the miles I drive as well as safety (hope the new car is safer than my '91 is). Well, hope this helps.

We have a 2000 GT here in Maryland, where 22" of snow fell this past January. The Celica is not for snow. It does have good traction, but not enough ground clearance. It is not good for the snow to hit the bottom of the car like that.
Also, as far as being 43 and wanting a Celica, don't sweat it. Believe it or not, that is about the median age of a Celica purchaser. I have seen only one man (besides myself and my friend who I share the car with) driving Celicas. It seems like a lot of women have them.
    YOU GO GIRLS!! :)

Good choice. I have an '81 Celica Supra and love it! I notice you are from Parker, I just moved from there about a year ago. Which dealerships have you looked at? I used to sell Toyota's at John Elway. And when I was there we would make every attempt to treat our customers fairly and with respect, I sure hope they haven't changed.

Keep us posted on what you end up getting. I'm envious, I WANT A NEW CELICA!!!

I just placed an order for a 2000 Celica GTS 5-speed with every option except the anti-theft alarm. I expect to receive it in 2-4 months. I'll let you know as soon as I take delivery
  • fyaegerfyaeger Member Posts: 2
Hi. Actually, John Elway (on Arapahoe) is where I found it! (small world) Looked at some of the other dealers around here & their MSRP marked prices were way above Edmund's MSRP quotes--Elway's was right on target. I've also heard good things from friends who have bought cars at Elway stores, so thanks for the additional insight. Is a Celica a hot car, or one that can be negotiated? (I really do know nothing about them, so this list has been quite helpful!) But in reading #122's, I was bummed. I don't want to wait 2-4 months! :-( I want it NOW. I think I'm actually gonna go for it...you only live once, right?! Thanks all for the tips!!

Hi Guys, This is partly in response to #116...
When I was 26 years old, I was in love with this girl I worked with. I wanted a new car to impress her with. Was at Goodman Toyota in Raleigh,N.C. and a truck pulled up with Celicas.I saw this brown hatchback with the new body style (1982). Bought it that day, I loved it. Well the girl moved on after three years (and others since then)., but I still have the car. I have 262,000+ miles on it, it's been one of the most consistant things in my life. I have replaced many tires and batteries and spark plugs. The clutch finally went out at 180,000 miles.Someone stole the hatchback sunshade. The radio quit working, (sometimes peace and quiet is good). The oil sensor guage is not working (I don't need it now because I check the oil weekly due to the front oil seal leaking). This car has gotten me thru a lot. I can't believe I've been driving it for 18 years (neither can the guys I work with). It still runs good, although the last couple of weeks the idle has been a little irregular. I'm writing this also in memory of this car...tonight and possibly a few more days will be it's last. It hit me tonight as I was driving around how much I would miss this car. I've ordered a silver GTS 2000, and it will be in tomorrow. Wish you guys all the best with your Celica's....Gary.

I was looking at the options for the 2000 GTS. Why do the southeastern states have additional packages to choose from?
  • scimitarscimitar Member Posts: 1
I will order a GT-S this week. (of course a six speed) Point being that I am very curious about the sound system. The GTS has "8 speakers in 6 locations". 8? 6 locations? I hope to replace the stock speakers and tweeters with 6 1/2 and 5 1/4 Polks. Anybody with some info, or hints on the Celicas sound system?
  • saurav1saurav1 Member Posts: 3
Two of them (the mid-ranges in the front doors) are 2-way speakers.

Hey people, i'm fairly new here so i'm just sayin' my hellos...i'm 23 from Toronto Canada and i wuz one of the first people here to have the GTS... however, due to an extremely long vacation that i took, I didn't really break the car in, until about a month ago, and i'm havin' a blast!

Anyhow, im' just wondering if there are any aftermarket stuff available yet?

Just have a quick question (if this is in a FAQ somewhere, please let me know where to look):

I have a friend interested in buying one of the new 2000 Toyota Celica GT-S's. We've noticed that it's listed to require Premium Unleaded fuel (it says that both on the gascap and here on Edmunds.com).

What we're curious to know is if any harm or damage can happen if my friend only used Regular Unleaded and not Premium?

We realize that the lower octane would drop overall performance a little bit (is there's *that* much difference between 87 and 93 octane from that perspective), but are more concerned about whether using the lower octane fuel could
    actually damage anything?

As far as I'm aware, the engine is a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder, DOHC all-aluminum engine, and is *not* supercharged from what I can tell (it is 180hp however)...

Any information you can tell me about how the fuel grades can impact this vehicle would be greatly appreciated. Please reply here or to me at rja@www.serve.com.

    Thanks!

    rob
  • roadroachroadroach Member Posts: 131
No, the GT-S is not supercharged, however, it does have a pretty high compression ratio for a production motor (11.5:1 I think). A lower octane fuel will probably lead to problems with detonation (fuel-air mixture igniting due to the compression in the cylinder before the spark plug fires) which could be damaging if it is severe. You could probably get away with running a lower grade of fuel (if the onboard computer adjusts the timing correctly) but you will definitly notice a loss of power and a tendency for the motor to "ping" under a load.
    Hope this helps.

What do you think of $22.4K (before tax/license) for a silver 2000 GTS? This price includes the following options: Sport Shift, ABS, Spoiler/Fog Lights, 16" Alloy w/ Locks, alarm, side air bags, sunroof and floor mats. Good deal or have you seen better? (I'm in Southern California)...
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
In Souther California, a price of $22,400 is about right for the GT-S with all the options you listed. CarsDirect.com says it would be $22,481 and they have really good prices. Take the plunge and JUST DO IT!!! :)

Since you live in CO and you are considering a small car like the Celica instead of a wasteful SUV, maybe you should look at the AWD Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS. I will be getting a GT-S, but if I were living in a snowy region, I would've gotten the 2.5 RS. You probably don't know anything about the Subaru because they don't advertise it at all, but you should take a look at it; it even comes in a sedan.
  • navy4navy4 Member Posts: 44
Cool, who did you talk to? Elway doesn't negotiate on the price since they became part of Autonation. So, the everyday low price is clearly marked on the car. (I remember that after a year of being away, dang.) Let me know what you end up getting.

I've been reading for awhile and wanted to post my purchase price experience for an Absolutely Red 2000 GT-S. I just bought it from Will at Longo Toyota in El Monte, California (LA). My car is the 6 speed and has the following options: AB Antilock Brakes, AW Alloy Wheels, SR Moonroof, RF Rear Spoiler, CD Floor Mats, and LA Leather Seats. The MSRP is $24,241 and Will was able to discount it down $2,353 and price it at $21,188. I just picked up the car yeterday and drive it home to San Diego and am very pleased with the car and also with the treatment at Longo. The place is huge and during a golf-cart tour I saw about 12(!) MR2 Spyders on the lot and whole boat load of Celicas, some in various stages of preparation for sale.

Anyway, Will is a good guy and was easy to work with. You can access their website at www.longotoyota.com or email him directly at longois1@aol.com. From a very satisfied customer, Randy Schimka (rschimka@aol.com)

I'm considering buying either the celica or eclipse but there is one thing that troubles me about both cars. The air intake for the radiator on both cars does not have a grill, it is open. My concern is that rocks could damage the radiator. The skirt on the front end of my camry is loaded with chips from rock hits. I've looked for aftermarket grill inserts but I can't find any. Is this a legitimate concern or not? Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

Picked up a red GTS 2 weeks ago and I'm quite happy. It doesn't have the go of my 1985 Supra, but when the revs are high -- it goes. In South Florida I paid $23,400 with 50 series tire upgrade, leather, moonroof w/deflector, spoiler, carpets, carbon fiber dash accent, remote alarm system, auto w/sportshift, (there is always the rip-off TOYOgaurd). I get 26 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the highway - not bad, just wish I didn't have to go premium fuel.

I believe the dealer put regular in it for delivery, cause it's peppier now that I've been putting in premium. I wouldn't try regular, 11.5 compression ratio is way too high for 87 octane. If my wife would learn manual shift, I'd have bought that. I could not afford a divorce so I got the auto. Definitely recommend the 6 speed.

Only problem is the view out the rear is VERY BAD. Be very cautious when backing up or changing lanes, the blind spot is nearly everything behind your ears.

I have a 1990 Toyota Celica GT and it has 180,000 miles on it. It still rides great and I haven't put any money into it, excpet for batteries, tires, etc. Anyone who is thinking of buying a Celica...go for it. It is definately worth your money. Only wish I could afford a new one for my next car!
  • mrspeedmrspeed Member Posts: 21
I've also owned a '90 Celica GT. Great car, super reliable, I sold it when it had 101K miles and it still looked and drove like new! The quality of the Celica's materials was actually better then than today.
  • bunnylustbunnylust Member Posts: 1
Hey all, after doing a ton of research and reading all 142 posts here, I am left with the question: Which should I get a GT or GTS? I was originally thinking about getting a GT which is essentially fully loaded (everything minus the 6CD changer and most likely minus the 'all weather package') and after talking to a dealer they were edging me to the GTS since a lot of what I want comes standard. However, I'm not a person who likes to push my car into the high revs so I'm not sure If the GTS would even be any benefit to me. Shopping online the price between my loaded GT and GTS (which of course I had to add leather) comes out to a $4,000 price difference. Is it worth it to me?

Also, could someone email me a scan of the hp/torque curves so I can figure out if I would ever use the extra HP of a GTS the way I drive? lmaar@au-ins.com

    Thanks,
    L
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The only reason to go for the GT-S is the standard equipment and bigger engine. My friend and I share a GT with automatic, and it is fine on power. The GT-S is only more powerful at higher revs. Also, the GT-S requires premium fuel. Something to think about these days.

Does anyone else have a problem with the CD player skipping? They swapped mine out twice, and both replacements have the problem; the dealer says that Toyota is still looking at it...
  • navy4navy4 Member Posts: 44
Why not get the All Weather package? It is a package that Toyota puts on ALL cars and has some nice convinience type of features. Also, in the long run it is cheap.
  • rschimkarschimka Member Posts: 7
I've had my GT-S for one week and the CD player skips. Store-bought regular CDs skip occasionally, not too bad (maybe 1 to 4 times per one 45 minute CD). But I've recorded CD-R compilation CDs on my computer and they skip a ll-l-l-l-ot (5-10 skips per song). The funny thing is that my wife plays the CD-R discs in her Honda CD player with no problem and the ride in that car isn't as smooth as the Celica.

I've been exchanging emails with my salesman, and he encouraged me to take it in and have it replaced under warranty. I'm not crazy about devoting the time to it if the problem hasn't been addressed by Toyota. Anyone else have comments? Thanks, Randy

    Hi All,
Here's a question that's been burning up my Celica-induced foggy mind! I got the 16" wheels as an option on my GT-S recently. So thinking back when you thought that geometry and math were not going to be important in your life, does this extra 1" mean that my speedometer (and odometer) are now incorrectly calibrated? Maybe I'll have my wife drive alongside of me at 70mph or something and check it out....Pi* r* r, Randy
  • kwrohrerkwrohrer Member Posts: 11
The problem has been in Toyota's hands since at least early to mid March. Fujitsu (the radio maker) hadn't been able to find anything wrong with the two units that didn't work in my GT-S. I call every so often, but the person at the dealer says she hasn't heard back from Toyota yet.

In your shoes, I would not accept multiple radio replacements, and I would make sure your dealer is aware that Toyota is aware of the problem, though they apparently don't have a fix yet. I haven't even heard that Toyota has figured out what's wrong.

The tire diameter will does affect the speed. The formula is Pi * Diameter for the circumference (you had the area of the circle). But what counts is the outside diameter, I'm not sure if there is a difference in the outside diameter, the 16" tires have a smaller wall profile. If there is a large difference they would have to compensate with a different speedometer pick-up. I suspect that the outside diameters are not significantly different, my Solara's 15" tires have a larger outside diameter than the Celica-GTS' 16" tires.

    Kinezo,
Rod Millen makes an intake and soon an exhaust will be coming. You should also check TRD for suspension upgrades. I picked up the lasted Turbo mag. and there is a Celica that was tuned by a company named Blitz which featured an intake and roots-type blower(supercharger).

I just got a Ninja ZX-6R, but my Celica GT-S is still fun, when it's raining. If you thought the Celica's redline was high, try 14,000 RPMs.

I also have that problem with the cd player. Is Toyota going to have a recall?

Did you guys know that the storage bin above radio
is a where the navagation system is located on the japan model and they also get an extra 5 horsepower, I wish I lived Japan... Never mind...
They have to recycle thier cars every 4 to 5 years and thier economy sucks.
  • kwrohrerkwrohrer Member Posts: 11
Monday night they replaced my GT-S's CD player with one that came "direct" from Toyota (the others had come directly from Fujitsu, who actually makes the unit). They said they'd had better luck with those. My luck was not improved. I haven't heard back from them yet, despite their promise Monday night to call me back in the morning, and my call into their voice mail Wednesday afternoon.

Does anyone with a GT or an Avalon with this same radio/CD/tape unit experience skipping, especially if it always happens in certain spots on any given CD, double especially if it doesn't skip with the car stopped or the engine turned off?

5 different units--one in a new GT-S they took off the back lot that still had the plastic on the seats--have exhibited this skipping problem for me, so it's either the model of radio or an interaction between that model and some feature of the GT-S trim. So far it hasn't even occurred to them to try a different model CD player; I will suggest that when next I get in touch with them.

Question - after looking for a boring, 4 door, pratical compact car, I took a 2000 celica GT for a test drive. I am now hooked! I must have one! Problem...my husband and I are planning on having kids in a couple of years. This is a two door car with a small backseat. Is there anyone out there with any experience with childseats in the celica? Is it just a little bit of an inconvenience or a big problem? I am 29 and fairly flexible, so I don't mind a little bit of acrobatics to get a kid back there (assuming we leave the child seat in there all the time. Can you even fit a childseat back there?

I've had my GT-S for a month now and am already experiencing problems:
    1) If your are closing the sunroof and forget you already have your windows up but still lift both window buttons at the same time the sunroof will start to open back up.
    2) Just the other day I noticed my driver-side fog light jittering upon inspection I realized the entire housing had somehow become loose.
    3) The antenna sucks, if you accidentally touch so that it vibrates it works itself loose.
    4) When putting on the bra I hear squeeks, like the bumper is about to fall off, and have noticed the driver front side light marker moves back and forth like the cut-out is a tad larger than the marker.

key3 - my wife and I had our 1st child in September and I've had a GTS since November. Some thoughts on car seats:

Yes, a car seat fits in the back. We have one of the Century models (the removable base is secured with the seat belt, the seat snaps in place and doubles as an infant carrier). I put the infant seat behind the passenger seat. Its not as easy as loading up the 4runner (wifes car) but its not too bad. It may actually get easier when we can go to a forward facing toddler seat which stays in the car. Guess we'll find out soon enough....

ufo - strange problems you're having. I haven't noticed the sunroof deal....can't see how they're related since the sunroof switch is overhead and the window switches are on the console. Only glitch I've had is the CD player seems to skip excessively. Let us hear what you find out from the shop regarding the 4th gear grind.

I purchased a replacement Alpine MD/CD stereo for my 2000 Celica GT-S. Before I waste a lot of time trying to figure it out, does anyone have any advice to offer on the installation process? Location of screws that need to come out, etc.? Any information will certainly be appreciated...

    Thank you, Randy

I just spoke price with a salesman on a 2000 celica gt. He is claiming that in the southeast, the dealers have to pay an extra cost of $425 on invoice, which of course gets passed on to the customers, and also an advertising cost of $140 - $170. Sounds like a load of #$@*&! to me....anyone know anything about this? (This was in Goldsboro, North Carolina).
  • ufoufo Member Posts: 2
From what I've heard there is no adapter for the stereo to be connected. It can be wired into the toyota clip by splicing. To remove stereo: remove dash area around gear shift and unclip ashtray light(squeeze one side to remove clip). With that out of the way, you should just have A/C area and up attached still. Next remove fresh/recirculate slide knob and all three dials(Fan, temp and selector dials. Leave screws behind dials.). With those gone all you have to do is lift carefully from the bottom and everything up comes out as you lift, storage compartment as well. Now the radio should be showing and there are four screw at each corner of the bracket holding the radio in. Remove and radio will come out.------UFO

I AM LOOKING FOR ANYONE WHO HAS TEST DROVE THE NEW CELICAS AND THE NEW MERCURY COUGAR V6'S. PLEASE TELL ME YOUR HONEST OPINION ON WHICH ONE HAS BETTER PERFORMANCE AND WHICH ONE IS JUST A BETTER BUY. AND IF YOU HAVE NOT TEST DROVE BOTH, WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE CELICA GT IF YOU BOUGHT ONE AND WHAT IS A GOOD TARGET PRICE TO LOOK FOR?
